《Programming in Another World》Chapter 4 - The Programmer's Denied Entry

That said, how am I supposed to kill these slimes? I mean, I have no weapons, and I doubt me punching them will do anything... Besides, don't you have to stab a slime's core to get rid of them?

I stare at the bouncing blobs as I try to come up with an idea. As I continue pondering, I notice a sharpish looking rock next to my feet. I pick it up slowly and then look at the defenseless, harmful slimes. I let a small chuckle.

I then rush towards the slime that attempted to kill me and thrust the rock into its body. Thankfully the rock was sharp enough to go through the slime's skin. After pulling it out, I thrust the rock at the slime again but aimed for its core.

The core was also squishy as the rock penetrated it, and both went out of the slime's body. Without the core being in the body, the slime deflates like a balloon. All of its slimes sink into the ground, and after a minute, the body is nowhere to be found.

"Wow, this rock is effective against slimes..."

I smile and turn to the other slimes. They all jump at once as if they know their demise is coming. They attempt to flee, but I made my way towards them faster and slabbed their core, effectively killing them all.

After ten minutes of stabbing and eliminating all of the slimes, I fall to the ground, exhausted. I guess having low endurance is no joke...

Nevertheless, I smile.

"Hehe... It was all worth it. World's Programming!"

I called open my power and opened the help tab. In it, I find the tab that has my current status and opens it up. That said, I only look at the section that contains my MP.

MP: 11

"Nice!"

Although it's not much, it's a start... True, I still can't do anything with this amount, but this is only the beginning.

I look around the grassland and notice other slimes bouncing around.

"Hehe..."

So, if I murder each of these slimes, I could raise my MP to the fifties or maybe even to 100, right? Yes! That's what I'll do.

With my plan devised, I grab ahold of the sharpish rock and rush over to all the slimes along the way to the gate. Whenever I encounter a slime, I thrust the rock at its core and murder it. I continued doing this for every slime that was near the gate.

"Woos! I'm exhausted, but that was fun."

I'm now at the gate that was to the north-western side of the wall. From my initial location, it took more than 40 minutes to travel there. Truthfully, it would have only taken around 30 minutes, but since there were about 50 slimes that I encountered, it took a tad bit longer.

Speaking about those slimes, my MP has risen from 11 to 39! Still, this isn't the greatest, and I have yet leveled up, but it's slowly getting there... Maybe, I don't know how much MP I'll need. It could be in the millions or billions...

Anyway, I walk up to the gate's front, where two guards in full metal armor stop and greets me.

"Halt child! We will need to see your identification papers before you can enter."

"Jim, I doubt he'll understand what you are saying. Besides, why is there a child running rapidly out here? Did the morning crew think it was a good idea to let him out? Also, he looks like he played with the slimes. Look! He's filthy, and there's slime all over his hands and clothes..."

"I understand, but we have to be equal to everyone, even to a kid. I'll try to speak in a way he can understand..."

"Oh, don't worry. I can understand you two."

I spoke while thinking over the words that the 2nd guard said. Geez, I haven't noticed that I was filthy... I better get to a bath before I go to any store or inn...

"Huh?! Oh, you can, huh..."

"And you can speak so clearly... This might be the first for a child that's about your age."

"(Ahem) If you can understand, then I'll repeat. We will need to see your identification papers before we can let you through. True, if you don't have any, we will have to fee you with a silver coin."

"I see... Well, that's a shame. You see, I was on a journey from a different town with my parents. Sadly, we encountered some monsters. They tore our wagon apart and killed both my parents. That's why my clothes are like this. I safely and luckily got away from them but I some encounters with some slimes. I managed to kill them, but it took most of my energy away. Those monsters ate our identification papers and money, so I'm sad to say that I don't have any of them. Forgive me for wasting your time..."

I bow to them as I slowly depart. As I do, I overhear their conversation.

"M-man, what a sad story..."

"You got that right! It's a shame that we have to follow those damn rules. Even though he's now homeless, we can't allow him to enter without the fee or paperwork."

"I know... Even if we try to convince the higher-ups to let people like that boy in, that boy will probably be dead..."

"Indeed... Still, his manner of speech is impressive. I wonder who he is..."

Both of the guards look downward, depressed. I didn't mean to cause them trouble, but I sadly neither had any money nor papers that identify me. I guess I'm going to have to travel to a different town, but that will be somewhat of a problem.

Based on the report from my help tab, this is the demon continent, meaning monsters and demons are scattered everywhere. I managed to face off against a slime, but I doubt I could win if my opponent had any attacking power...

"I guess I'll go back to where I started."

I made my way back to the center of the plains, which is where I spawned. As I do, I murder all the slimes that I come across, which was another fifty. My MP has improved again and is now at 79. With this much, I should be able to withstand at least one attack if I had to.

In that case, I guess I can work on a program that will improve my strength. That way, if I need ever to use it, I'll be prepared and don't have to waste time or be caught off guard...

I take a seat on the grass and open up my editor. The program I want to make is simple as it only needs a couple of lines.

First, I want to have an activator. Currently, I have activated and deactivate programs as I see fit, which is helpful. Now, I want to try to make always activate one using the main method.

With my power, I can create full and separated programs. Programs do not require any mana to be created, but I have some feeling that they take up space within me. Right now, I can't see that space, but I might eventually feel it. I think I can make about 3 full-length programs or 20 short programs. If I can increase my WP, I imagine that the number of programs that I can make will increase.

Also, the separated programs mean that they all act on their own. They each can have their own main method, but they won't interact with each other, as in pull data or variables. I should be able to activate or call the program to start within another program.

Anyway, I have only one program created called Test. Right now, I've been only experimenting on some things.

For instance, I can use any programming language that I see fit that was created on Earth. Also, there seem to be some custom-made functions, like a void method called start(). With it, it calls whatever is in the method whenever I activate the program.

I have been using it for the entire time I have been here, but now I'll test with the main method. It should be exactly similar to the start() method but allows me to be a bit flexible.

public static void main(String[] args) { ... }

Nice! Now, to have an activator that will always be called. I guess I'll use a while statement for this. I'll even go simple. I'll create a boolean, and when it's true, my stats will be set to a certain value. I'll switch between them by using another function that I found out...

me.getVoice();

This method allows me to get my voice and puts it in a string. I need to put how long it needs to track my voice, but other than that, it doesn't need anything else.

"Alright, the rest is stuff I have already learned. Time to start!"

I spend the next thirty minutes finalizing my program. Now, whenever I say 'switch X,' I can enable and disable my strength powerup. There are more effective ways, and I could use the built-in feature, but having voice commands is cool!

Oh, and my strength powerup is just me setting my strength attribute to a numerical value that I saw out loud. That said, I did some testing and discovered that the current highest I can set it to and last an entire minute is 25.

Sadly, 25 strength isn't that much different than what I had before. Lucky for me, I came up with a rough and probably inaccurate equation that should give me the highest value that I can use for a minute by using my current MP (me.getMP()).

If your curious, I got the equation from testing out different strength values and watching the rate at which my MP decreases. Let's say it took twenty minutes to figure it all out, which is why it took a long time to finalize...

"Now what..."

Truthfully, not really good happened to me. At least I have a foundation, but I'm going to need more mana if I want to use it effectively.

"That means... I only have one thing I can do. I'm just going to have to farm slimes."

It's my only way to increase MP. If I attempt to kill any other type of monster, I'm surely going to die. I have zero combat experience in my past life so sending me out here without letting me use my power to the best of its ability is hell!

"Ugh... Better get started."

I hesitantly get up off of the ground and scan my surroundings in search of slimes. Although slimes are the most common monster in games, they are hard to find in the real world. Well, this isn't a game where they respawn, so it makes sense. If I want more monsters, I'm going to have to move to a different area.

I drag my body in a random direction. The direction that I got was the south, where the forest is. Although I'm reluctant to go in there, skimming, its surface wouldn't do that much. I mean, why would slimes hang out inside the forest? If they are close by, they would be on the outskirts and not inside...

I nod and continue walking towards the forest. After yet another 30 minutes, I reach the forest's edge. There is no slimes insight. I continue walking on the outskirts when I hear the rustling of leaves.

"!"

I turn around and face the direction of the rustling. As I do, a figure jumps out of a bush, revealing himself.

"Uh oh..."

"Gawr!"

The figure shouts at me and begins stomping towards me, one step at a time. As he stomps, he swings the weapon in his right hand, a club, up and down, slamming it into the ground. The ground makes small imprints of the club, meaning that this creature is somewhat strong.

"Why do I have to encounter someone like you?!"

Great... I'm exhausted, don't have enough MP, still at level 1, got denied entrance to a town, and now going to have to face my 2nd monster...

A goblin.
