《Programming in Another World》Chapter 5 - Saving the Day!

"Crap..."

I have done it now... Three of the orcs are faced at me, preparing themself to attack me. It seems they finally recognize me as an enemy, which makes me slightly happy but also dreadful.

What to do...

While thinking about my next plan of action, I hear a mechanical voice inside my head.

Level up!

"Huh?"

The voice distracted me for a second. When it does, all three of the orcs charge at me.

"Ah, shit!"

Not having any time to decipher that voice's meaning, I try my best to dodge the orcs' attacks. Thankfully, I successfully escape them with only minor injuries from rolling on the ground. Better than getting wicked by one of the orc's fists or weapons.

Continuing to dodge their attacks, I decided to open the editor to see if I can understand what the voice meant by level up.

Well, I know what it means, but I want to see if it did something to my status. After having to dodge and search, I find the help section's status page and saw that nothing has changed. Well, apart from my level. I'm now level 2!

This is wonderful! Too bad I'm going to die before I can use this level to improve my programs. I mean, this makes my WP 2, but I won't be able to see the new changes!

While slightly panicking, I unconsciously glance at the top right to see that my mana has increased. For some reason, it has increased by a high number. It's now 80! That's a huge difference. I mean, it was 34 earlier. Wait...

The corners of my mouse started moving upwards, making a smile appear on my face. With this amount of mana, I should win this fight if I use them correctly. Thankfully, my mana supply increased to full when I leveled up.

Plus, my WP is now two. This means that instead of mana being consumed every minute, it consumes every twenty minutes.

What I need is strength. I can win if I increase it.

I continue to smile as I dodge and mess with the editor. My endurance is slowly decreasing, so I have to hurry and make my advance. I edit the program I used earlier to increase my strength to eleven instead of four. From my debug program, it seems that I'll have some to spare, so I increased my mental strength by one.

After making the changes and applying them to me, I immediately felt a change and abid a slight one. I can feel through my entire body that my strength has been increased. I have confidence that I can lift that sword now. Too bad, I never had any kendo lessons.

Feeling somewhat refreshed, I plan and rush towards the sword I stabbed into the first orc. Upon reaching the orc, I easily pull the sword out and charge at one of the orcs. Carefully dodging their and the others' attacks, I go behind it and slice it from the back. Thank the heavens that orcs are slow! (And for the fact of watching them, discovering that they are slow!)

I successfully slice the orc. After making a couple of more slices, I killed my next orc. Orc blood sprays all across my sword and onto me. I'm somewhat disturbed by this blood, but not too much that I would stop mid-battle since I would get killed.

The other two orcs roar from seeing their ally fall. Then, the remaining orcs start to rush at me again. I dodge their advancements, slicing them in any openings they give that is also safe for me. After what feels like hours, the orcs are successfully defeated. Wait, that last orc!

I turn towards the last standing guard to see what happened to her. Thankfully, it appears that she won her battle with the orc, though her body is scattered with bruises and mixed blood.

I rush over to her to see if I can help in some way. While I do, I hear the same mechanical voice as before.

Level up!

My eyebrows lift as I hear the voice. Not only did my mana supply is restored, but my WP is now 3. Man, what luck! Well, I did almost die, but shh...

As I continue to think and approach the guard, I take a peek at my mana count. My thought process instantly stops working once I see the number, though I continue walking.

Mana: 322.

How did three orcs increase my mana to this?! I'm not complaining, but curious is all... Well, let's focus on the girls first, but once I finish helping them, I'm going to go ham on experimenting!

I finally reach the guard.

"Miss! Are you okay?"

"H-huh? Oh, you are still here? I thought you would be dead meat by now, especially after you shouted non-sense at them."

The guard falls to her knees while holding onto her sword. She uses some of her energy to look around.

"Wait! What happens to the other orcs? You need to hurry before..."

"T-they are defeated, somehow..."

"Somehow?! There is no way a child like yourself could defeat orcs! Especially those! They were a higher level than normal."

She takes a full look at me.

"You do look like you were in a fight..."

I nod and point to the body of the orcs I killed. Her eyes look shocked, but her eyes widen as if she remembered something before she questions me.

"Princess!!!"

She pushes herself up, shoves me out of the way, and rush into the cart. I fell due to her shove, but once I got up and approached the cart's interior, I could hear the sound of fallen tears. Once I make it to the guard, I can see that she is crying while holding a little girl's body.

"No!! P-princess... Please don't die on me now!"

I noticed the little girl earlier but to think that she was a princess... This cart looks a bit nice on closer inspection, and the guards did have somewhat good armor. That sword I used was sharp too. Plus, the little kid, who looks to be similar in age to me, has princess-like attire.

She has curly-long white hair with a full white dress. Honestly, she is gorgeous for being a kid... That said, she isn't in the best of states. First, her dress has holes on it, revealing parts of her palish skin. There are some cuts on her skin, too, showing that she was attacked at one point. That said, I think when the cart got knocked off, that is when she fell unconscious. So I don't think she is going to die... Not yet, anyway.

Is there something I can do? No... All I can do is affect myself. I do have a way to heal, but it only works on... WAIT! That's right; I have WP of three now. Maybe I can affect others. If so, I can heal the princess and the knight...

I open up the editor and search the help pages. Right here!

After skimming and reading some portions, I learn what WP of two and three do. A WP of two gets me the ability to affect myself at a better level or whatever that means. On the other hand, a WP of thee gives the ability to affect others, though I must be touching them. It is limited to what the WP of one could do, but it can be increased by one level with more physical contact.

What all that means is that I can heal both of them! I need to make the program, but I should be able to do it. The guard, at least... I might need the effects of WP of two since the cost is a bit less. Well, if I want to heal her with more power, that is.

More contact, huh... I can increase the effects to one higher level, which I need, but I have to have more contact. What's more contact than touching the target? Holding them? Maybe hugging...

No, k-kissing would be the answer...

Sigh... Well, maybe my program can heal her without the need for that. Okay, time to get to work!

...

Some time passes as I program. Comparing the time it is now, I have been working for only five minutes. The program I created uses a method to get the person I'm touching and alters their health by increasing their max health. I also added a feature that, if I wanted, can create their blood and insert it back into their body using mana. Sadly, this feature uses lots of mana... Based on my debug program, I won't heal their wounds and create back their blood...

Luckily, blood regenerates on its own. Now, let's hope this works...

I randomly touch the knight on her shoulder. When I do, she becomes wary but relaxes since I'm four-years-old.

"Heh... Thanks for trying to comfort me, but this is a big deal. The princess..."

Tears begin falling from her eyes again. Hoping that this would cure her of her sadness, I activate the program.

Waiting... Waiting... Waiting...

Hmm, I think I made the program a bit too simple. I mean, I can't tell if it's working or not. Her wounds are repairing themselves either. Well, I made the program to increase her health, not to fix her wounds. Let's fix this.

I take my hand off her and redo the program. After another five minutes, I replace my hand on her and reactivate the program.

This time, her wounds slowly close-ups. Since she has many of them, my mana drains extremely fast. Now, I have only half of my mana left. I hope this can at least heal the princess to normal...

When the knight notices that her wounds are healed, she looks at me, puzzled. Then, her eyes sparkle.

"You can use healing magic?! Please, our savior! Heal the princess! Please..."

"Y-yes..."

Well, I was planning to heal her from the start, even without you telling me. Though, if I want to heal her wounds with effectiveness and efficiency, I'm going to have to... Well, I don't need to, but she'll stay unconscious, so I don't know if the program works or not. Honestly, her wounds are not as nasty as the knight's, but I think the knight feels like she's dying if she stays unconscious. Though, I'm not a doctor, so she might...

"Umm... To heal her effectively and with all my power, I have to..."

"Do anything! Please, just save the princess's life!"

Anything? I think you need to think more about that answer. I mean, what if I said I needed to have... Eh, I'll leave it for now. I move closer to the princess, up to her face.

Once I'm close enough, I gulp. This is technically my first kiss in both worlds. I mean, we're kids, so it doesn't mean that much, but I'm a forty-year-old mentally. AH! Let's get this over with already!

I bend down and take the lips of the princess. It's... sweet. I can hear the guard screaming within my ear, but I ignore her and activate the program. After some time, the princess slowly regains her consciousness with her wounds healed. Umm... Our lips are still attached, so it made some weird tensions between us, though the knight finally drags me off the princess with her sword in hand.

"Y-you... rapist! Who cares if you're a kid! You stole the princess's lips. For that, you must die!"

"I had to heal her! You said anything too! If I was a real rapist, I could have done something way worst."

"Fiend! Die!!"

"Ack!"

"S-stop!"

" "!" " (Knight + Protagonist)

"Princess! Are you okay?! I'm sorry to spoil your eyes to such a dirty sight. I'll get rid of that fiend when you are not around, so worry not!"

"Hey!"

The princess, who is touching her lips, slowly shakes her head.

"When... k-kissing... me, I coud feel me body rejuvenate."

The princess speaks oddly but still uses large words. Some of her speech is mispronounced as if misspelled. I guess this is how children speak?

"I s-see... But the King would agree that the death penalty is the only way!"

"It wasn't... unconformable. Plus... didn't save us?"

"Umm... He did, but... (Sigh) Okay, princess..."

The knight stops speaking to the princess and faces me with a disgusted expression on her face.

"W-we thank you, savior. Although it is unspeakable that you would k... touch the princess like that, we are grateful for healing both of us. If I may ask, why did you heal her like that instead of the way you did for me?"

"I could have, but the healing wouldn't have been as effective. She would have remained unconscious, though her wounds would heal up. I don't have enough mana to regenerate her or your blood, but that can regenerate independently. I also thought you would fear that my healing didn't work and think she would have died while she remains unconscious. I-I'm sorry."

I bowed to show my sincerity. While I do, the knight looks a bit taken back. Either from me speaking, unlike a four-year-old or that my answer was good enough and showed that I wasn't aiming for the princess's lips, both help me either way.

"Under these circumstances, I forgive you this once, but please reframe from doing this in the future to anybody! Anyway, Savior, introductions are in order. I'm the personal guardian for the 1st princess of the Alfred Kingdom. My name is Mary. This is..."

The princess interrupts Mary and gives her introduction.

"I'm the..."

She immediately stops and ponders how to introduce herself. After a bit, she resumes while picking up her dress and bowing.

"I'm the first princess of the Alfred Kingdom, Emiko von Alfred. You have my thanks, Savior. Nice to meet-cha!"

Her words are both childish and like a princess. A little surprised, I give my reply.
