《Programming in Another World》Chapter 1 - Life before the Reborn...

I had always dreamed of becoming a programmer when I grew up. One reason was due to my father. He was an application programmer for a moderate company. He showed me his work and the programming languages he uses for his work on the days that he could bring me.
He only brought me to his work twice, but the first visit started my passion for programming. At that time, I was six years old, but I knew that I wanted to be a programmer in the future. Heh... I bet the old me would have never guessed that his dream would come real 32 years in the future. Nor the fact that he would become the most significant programmer in the world's history...
I have created programs that have helped us develop this lonely planet, Earth. I made artificial intelligence (AI) with a brain similar to humans, allowing us to have humanoids. I have even made some custom programming languages. One of which helps newcomers to get into programming with ease.
I didn't stop at application programming either. Six years ago, I started to join game companies and create a variety of games. Then, three years ago, I left and created my own game company. There, I made games that rival big companies. One was a survival sandbox game called Beginning Anew. The game replicated the real world in every aspect. I also developed a new console: Real-World Virtual Reality (RWVR).
This new technology allowed players to experience the game with their bodies. Everyone was ecstatic and wanted one. It has now become the norm to play games using this device.
I am living the dream. I have graduated from college in computer science, joined many companies, created programs that helped society evolve, and evolve gaming to the point where people can go into the games. I have no limit on money and have become a famous figure in the world.
Even with all this, I have many problems in this life. The biggest is a simple ice breaker question that people use every time I meet with them for the first time: What power would you like to have if you were a superhero?
Yes, it is a dumb childish question; however, I get asked this all the time. Every time I answer the question, I get mocked and laughed at because my answer is different than others' responses. That said, I think they are in the wrong. My power would replicate their and others' abilities and allow the world to take new heights... The capability of programming the world to my liking.
Once I thought about this power and first shared it, life wasn't the best... I got bullied throughout school because of it. Even my parents started to distance themselves from me. I withstand abuse from them too. After graduating from college, I haven't seen them since...
Nowadays, no one mocks me, but they always comment on this power. Still, they never agree with it. They don't understand the power it holds. I could make a program that allows flight in the world or gives the power of flight. I could heal any wound and teleport anywhere to my heart content. It could solve world hunger and much more! It's a godly power, but no one seems to understand. Well, it not like this matters...
It's just a supernatural power, impossible to replicate in the real world. Well, we do have something like it but not to the point of what I have dreamed of. Anyway...
Currently, I have left my company and joined a company called IT. There, I am working on a project about multi-dimensional perspectives. The code I'm working on should allow us to teleport an object through space. Actually, I have completed the code for it. All that needs to be done is the design and technical aspects. Theoretically, we should be done by the end of the day tomorrow.
"Yawn!"
Ah... It seems like I'm too tired for today. Well, I did stay up for about 41 hours with some ten minutes naps, but it was worth it.
"I better go home and have some good night's sleep."
I'm currently inside the company building. My house isn't that far away, so I can walk back and forth without any hassle. Since I'm the only one working this hour, I turn this floor's lights out and leave the building.

After walking for some time, I reach the train station. My house is on the other side of the station. Sadly, the train causes some noise, but it is so close to the company that I had to buy it. Plus, it is the cheapest house I have own due to it being near a noisy station.
There is a large crowd waiting for the train. Although it is ten at night, it seems like the train is busy even at night...
I begin pushing my way to the front of the line. Although I'm not waiting for the train, I'll instead cross it before the train comes. Once I finally got in front, something overcomes me. My vision starts fading in and out. My body is weakening too. I'm trembling and could fall at the slightest touch.
Beep Beep!
The train is coming. I need to hurry and cross. I tried to move, but I couldn't. Then, something touched my back, and I heard some soft words.
"Sorry..."
~ Push!
The thing that touched my back was a hand, and it pushed me onto the tracks. I lift my head to see who did it, but before then, the train hits me.
~ Boom!
I don't remember after this point, but it is clear to say that I died. Now, I'm in some dark void. I can still feel the pain of death, but it wasn't all that uncomfortable due to my past. Now what?
As I sat in the void, a white figure appeared before my eyes. He was human-like, but there was some divinity coming off of him. He also wore a kimono. Is he some God?
"Welcome, Emon, to the pit of darkness."
"Pit of darkness?"
"Yes, this place is neither heaven nor hell but a midway. Before you head into one of the realms, you'll be judged based on how you lived your life thus far. Let me see..."
The being pulled out a scroll within his kimono and started to read from it. He spoke as he read.
"It says here you had a decent life. Bad from the start, but it got better due to your hard work. What's this? It appears you have been murdered. Getting pushed into a train, huh. That is a cruel death. Okay!"
He puts the scroll up and stares at me.
"Dewa Emon, I have made my judgment! You will go to neither Hell nor Heaven but continue to live! I can not send you back to your old world, even as a newborn baby, but I can reborn you into another world! Since you were murdered, I'll grant you one wish. If I recall, this wish is like a cheat ability that your world seems to know. Now, what would you like to have in this new world?"
Wait, wait! Please hold on a second! I haven't fully processed this all yet... A new world? A cheat-like ability? A wish? Isn't this a neverending famous plot that is used in a lot of anime? I'm not a fan, but I have heard of it. Still, what do I wish for? A power like flight or teleportation? No... A small grin form on my face.
It's obvious. What power would I like to have if I were a superhero? This is the same question, just in a different form.
"I wish for the power to program within the world as some medium or what I like to call World's Programming!."
There was no reaction in the being. All he did was nod his head.
"Granted. Please think about this power more in-depth. I will use that and create the power that you wished for. I will have to tweak it a bit due to my power restrain and the world's rules that you'll be sent to, but it will be relatively similar to your picture. Now then, I will begin the transfer and the creation of your power. Goodbye for now..."
"Bye..."
With that, the dark void changed to pure whiteness. Too white that I got blinded and went unconscious...

The Laptop Hero (Portal/Isekai LitRPG)
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - April 2022 Silas got summoned to another world—by a group of kids attending magic school who seemed rather unhappy with the results of their ritual. After a brief glimpse of his summoners Silas woke in the town dump. Unable to speak the local language, a misunderstanding escalated and before long Silas wound up in a jail cell, the locals having confiscated all his worldly possessions aside from his laptop, which had formed some strange bond with him. Now he can summon his laptop at will, and he can view his Status, level up, and gain powerful skills and magic as if he were some character in a video game, which is great and everything, but all Silas really wants to do is sit in a dark room and play games on his laptop. Only, life isn't a game, and Silas needs to get his act together because everyone else is playing for keeps. Or does he? Maybe for Silas life is just one big game now, with everyone else stuck playing by his rules. Assorted Disclaimers, in no particular order: I am only posting this on RoyalRoad.com, so if you find my story elsewhere it was not posted by me. Please do let me know! While I do consider this a progression fantasy, and have tagged it as such, Silas's Status improvements will not necessarily proceed in a linear fashion. His RPG stats will have ups and downs, exploits and nerfs, periods of growth and stagnation. Such is the life of a gamer, to be held under the thumb of the all powerful devs, or in this case a certain goddess devoted to the idea of Balance. SIlas himself should learn and grow, improving and progressing in areas where he struggles, or rather, to show such is my goal. The story is told from multiple points of view. While other PoVs will come and go, Silas shall remain the only lead character. The world Silas finds himself on is not a nice place. Expect him to encounter gore and traumatizing content and bad people who do bad things for selfish (or possibly noble) reasons from time to time. Some characters will use profanity, however due to cultural differences the curse words used will differ from those used in our corner of reality, so I'm not including the profanity content warning. Silas himself isn't one for foul language. No explicit sexual content here. This novel is intended for mature readers, however, and will include mature topics, including, but not limited to, sex, violence, death, and taxes. No harem. Might be an eventual romantic interest, possibly even some competitive jealousy, yet as his story begins Silas is too overwhelmed with other concerns to consider long term plans. Musophobics might want to steer clear of this story. Same goes for turophobics. You have been warned. Keep in mind, however, if my other disclaimers didn't make this clear, I only have the faintest of outlines at the moment. This story will take me where it will. My goal with this story is to write it to the end, something of a long-term writing exercise, with the hope others might take an interest in my work and encourage me to keep at it. I've started a number of works before, even finished a few, but this is the first time I've shared any work in a public forum. My temporary cover was made by me, in GIMP using public domain images. If you can do better I'll happily accept your submission and give credit for your work here!
