Chapter 04 - Elemental Affinity

The wall dividing the Academy and the aristocracy had a simple iron fence like gate. Behind this gate was a simple stone path which led into a plain looking building.

Inside this building was a big space where many children at the age of 6 were waiting in a row. Because I knew that this queue was for the elemental affinity test I walked to the end of the queue and waited until it was my turn.

Because this may be interesting let me explain how this test is held. It begins with you filling out your application for this Academy, after this is done you proceed into another room there will be measured what kind of mana capacity you are having. To be clear whether you are at the beginning of Rank 1 or at the bottleneck of Rank 1.

Afterwards the last and probably the most important part for your time in the Academy and maybe for the rest of your life. The test for the affinity. You have to go into a magic circle which is carved into the floor. Last step putting your hand onto the crystal shaped object which then will show the color of your element.

The color for the different elements are Death is black, Life is greenish-yellow, Darkness is blackish- purple, Light is white, Earth is brown, Water is blue, Wind is green, Fire is red and Blood is dark red.

While I am at it why don't I explain how school works?

School is rather simple there are twelve classes numbered from 1-12, the school year starts every year in summer. The next school year starts in 2 weeks which is why currently so many people are here to get into the Academy. There is no possibility of skipping school because every child at age of six or seven has to visit school.

You can skip a school year if you show them your current rank as Mage or Warrior. If you want to graduate you can choose between an exam after twelve years of being in the Academy or showing that you surpassed Rank 6. In the complete history of this Academy only five people were able to surpass Rank 6 before their eighteenth's birthday.

Every year there is a tournament being held which will determine who is the strongest of each year. But the fight's between the 11's and 12's class is every year the best because them being always the people with the highest ranks. Class 1-4 normally is having rank 1-2 as pupils class 4-7 is usually having rank 2-3, class 7-10 consist mostly out of rank 3-4 and class 11-12 is having rank 4-6.

Every year before the new school year begins there are six weeks of holiday for the pupils and most of them will stay inside the Academy because of the long distance to their homes. But the rest whose home is within a day of travel will obviously go home during that time.

That should be everything, and now back to the waiting queue.

In front of me a girl with pink hair is staring at me.... I try to ignore her......she still looks at me. I give up and look at her only to see her blush and then rashly looking away. I start to grin and think 'the next twelve years just got interesting'.

I look how long the queue is until I need to fill out my application only to see that the girl is looking at me again. This time I immediately look at her and she opens her mouth to say something. But there is only a "...ah" sound and she is turning away again.

I try to remain my calm and not to be a complete ***hole. So I touch her at the shoulder and ask her " do you want something from me?" she is completely shocked by my sudden move and turns her head and I see that her face is having a bright red color.

'Jackpot' is my first thought. This cute little girl actually fell in love with me at first sight. I take a closer look to her face only to think that I actually found a goddess. Her brown eyes are giving of a feeling of kindness, her little nose fits perfectly to her cute mouth which just now is wryly smiling. Her body isn't bad either, a rather athletic body with slender legs.

Of course at age of six or seven you want see any differences in her upper body.

It took her about five minutes before she spoke to me.... I thought I would die before she opens her mouth.

" I am Nina Bloodhaven and I thought you might now how this Academy application works" she was rather shy but I thought I would make this angel mine. "I am Alex Peregontias nice to meet you and yes I accidently now how the application works". So I took my time and explained her everything I knew.

After I finished the explanation she looked at me like I am a god. Luckily the next person to fill out the application is Nina and I can after her proceed into the next room. The application itself is not complicated you write your name, age and what you want to learn. In my case I wrote Dual which should be sufficient.

The amount of people inside the next room was much lower than in the room before. It took not even ten minutes until Nina and me were the next ones to test the mana capacity.

Nina placed her hand on the Orb for the test and a dim light appeared inside the Orb. Clearly she is at the beginning of the first Rank. Now my turn 'I will show them that I will be the genius of the next year' and with that I placed my hand on the Orb.

A bright and dazzling light appeared inside the orb. The teacher who was supervising the test looked with a shocked expression at me and announced "First Rank bottleneck" and with that the room went quiet and everybody stared at me.

My first impression to the others was 'perfect'. Now they will see me as the genius and won't bother me. With that in mind I walked towards the last test. I had to call Nina because she was still shocked. "Won't you know my element Nina" was enough to get her back to reality.

The room for the Affinity test was the same as the test for the mana capacity. Only there was a magic formation carved into the ground and a transparent crystal floating in the middle.

I walked towards the teacher and he told me to wait because the person in front of me still needs to finish. Because I was curious about what my new classmates look like and which element they are I patiently waited.

Suddenly inside of the crystal fog was seen, this fog became more until the inside of the crystal was filled. Then the fog changed color from white to blue to green and so on, until the fog abruptly changed color. The color inside the crystal was..... red.

They guy was a Fire Mage or Warrior and happily walked out of the magic formation and towards the exit. Now was my turn.

I slowly walked inside the formation and with a knife a made a little cut inside my hand. My hand was now over the crystal and one drop of blood dripped on the crystal. The blood was absorbed and like already seen fog started to build up inside the crystal.

The color changed much more than by the guy before. It also took way longer until the fog abruptly changed color. But the result was even more shocking.

A black and dark red fog was inside the crystal. Like my mana capacity wasn't shocking enough I'am also a double element. Death and Blood Magic.
