《The Cakeboss Chronicles》Hall of Bao

The chomp awoke with the amount of sand in his eyes one only gets after a long duration of restful sleep. He rubbed his bleary eyes to clear his field of vision and examined his surroundings.
He was in a large circular hall, and his bed was arranged radially alongside several other similar empty beds. A concentric fountain occupied the center of the hall, and its mechanism spouted jets of chocolate that reached up to a ceiling that was... open, he realized as he looked up. There was a small circular skylight in the center of the dome shaped roof. Tiny birds flitted in from this opening to drink from the chocolate pool - they looked like they were made from chocolate themselves.
The chomp whistled to one of the birds, and it came hopping towards him, shy and cautious. He would wait till the small avian was close enough before it was time to chomp. Yes, closer now little bird. Just a little bit closer...
"It would be rude to eat the very creatures that saved your jiggles."
The voice rang clear and loud through the hall. It was a strong voice, feminine and husky, and had the kind of authority to it that could silence classrooms without being raised.
The bird flew way abruptly, alarmed by the sudden sound. The chomp turned to face the widest chomp he had ever seen in his short life. She occupied one full half of the area of the entire hall floor. The chomp wondered how she had managed to get through the very small door that functioned as the only apparent entrance. She was soft, not just in body but also in facial expression, despite her stentorian voice.
"Well don't just sit there staring young chomp. Introduce yourself! I'm Mistress Bao."

False Reality
Wildbridge was a sleepy town. Nothing much happened there. Well, not since... Martin. And that suited Serina just fine. But everything was about to change. Or had it already started changing, and all that was about to happen was that people were going to start noticing? Well, it's difficult not to notice when people start turning up dead. Murdered. Especially when you're a senior member of the Serious Crime Investigation team. Meanwhile, many light years away on the non-aligned planet of Jahanna, changes were already afoot, and there were whispers of rebellion and revolution on the streets. But death is not far away here, either. As the well-oiled machinery of the bureaucracy begins to stutter and creak under the weight of murder and betrayal, just how far will the Council go to maintain the status quo? How could the events in Wildbridge possibly have any bearing on Jahanna? And what exactly happened on Bershevah?
