《A virtual reality game according to a martial artist otaku》Chapter 21

Finally it was Krillin's turn to take guard. His watch was thankfully uneventful. "Wake up sleepyhead. It's your turn to stand guard." He shook Krillin who was muttering something about Goku? He got up, sleepy eyed. "Get up, I wanna sleep."
After Krillin finally got up, Kira got his two bear cloaks and used them to make a makeshift sleeping bag. Gabumon lay beside him. "Night." He said out to his pet, closing his eyes.
Logging off, he ate his dinner before logging back on and sleeping ingame.
Kira was woken at the crack of dawn by an NPC guard. "Get up." With a sigh of resignation, he quickly got ready to leave. He put his 'sleeping bag' into his inventory. He checked Gabumon, who was now awake.
"Let's go everyone!" Rin shouted. They all trudged down the road, the silence broken by the squeaking of the cart.
They had gotten less than 100 meters from where they had made camp when suddenly arrows started flying. "BANDITS!" Rin shouted. 'You don't say.' They all huddled round the cart, facing enemy. They were in a large clearing, about 200 meters in diameter.
Kira blocked arrows with his sword, ignoring the screams of pain that happened whenever someone got hit. Just as soon as they started, the arrows stopped flying. Tension hung in the air. He quickly glanced at his team and winced. Two guards were injured; one had arrows in his knees whilst one had his shoulder pierced. Three looked like hedgehogs... 'Too late for them.'
"CHARGE!" A deep, male voice shouted and the bandits rushed into view; there were about 70 of them. 'Well shit.' Kira thought. He looked at Krillin and Akamaru. They were firmly looking straight at the approaching bandits. He looked at the NPCs. Only Rin, Obito and one more stood, ready to defend. He sighed. 'Desperate times call for desperate measures.' He sheathed his katana, brought his hands up and unleashed a spell. "BRILLIANT FLAME OF THE FIRE DRAGON!" Bringing his hands down, a two meter fireball headed straight for the rushing bandits. Startled, not all of them dodged. The flames were hot enough to burn human flesh.
The bandits that were unlucky to be caught in the flames were burnt alive, their screams of pain and anguish scaring their comrades. They stopped, unsure of what to do. "What are you waiting for, ya idiots?" A large man with a greataxe stepped out onto the clearing. "GET HIM!" He shouted, ordering his men. They looked at each other.

They charged. '65 left. I took out less than I wanted.' He looked at his mana bar. 'Good enough for several spears.' He went into a javelin thrower position. Activating his lightning spear skill, he threw the first spear, hitting a surprised bandit, it went though him and hit another guy behind him. They were both fried.
He threw another one. And another one, taking out at least 20 unfortunate bandits. The other 40 were still running, including their apparent leader.
None of the other members of the escort team had done anything, they were staring at Kira in shock and awe.
'They are getting close.' Kira noted. The bandits were now less than twenty meters away and approaching rapidly. He drew his sword. "Prepare to engage!" He shouted. "YEAH!" Krillin and Gabumon shouted in response. Akamaru howled. Krillin, Gabumon and Akamaru stayed behind, protecting Rin and Obito.
The 40 bandits slowed down, opting to circle around the cart. Kira gripped his weapon, glaring at the bandits. They grinned. He was preparing to rush them when suddenly
*Ding* Your pet has been killed. You can revive it in the next town.
"What the fuck?!" Turning round, the sight that greeted his eyes enraged him: It was Rin and Obito. Obito was pulling a sword from Krillin's lifeless body whilst holding Akamaru's head. The NPC guard lay dead, blood spurting from his throat. Rin pulled out a blood-stained dagger from Gabumon... She looked at Kira and smiled.
'They have betrayed us!' Kira realised what was happening. 'This bitch is in league with the bandits!' He looked at Gabumon. He was already dead. 'I'll grieve him later. First comes my revenge!' He held his sword vertically.
"Reap, heaven's wheel."
The bandits stopped five meters away from Kira, trying to see whether or not Kira's bladed staff was handled with enough skill to endanger them.
It was.
Kira ran straight into their group, ignoring Rin and Obito. 'They will be the last.' He sliced through the arm of the closest bandit, ignoring his screams. There were many of them. Too many, in fact, to face Kira effectively; their own numbers blocking each other. He ran in-between two bandits. Spinning his weapon in a circle, he sliced the two of them in half; one with a downwards stroke with his top blade, another with his bottom blade, swinging upwards. The men didn't have time to scream, instead, their blood coated an infuriated Kira.

He jumped over a blade. He landed and stabbed the perpetrator. He pulled out, impaling another one behind him. His massive weapon's tip emerging from the other side.
He spun his weapon horizontally, slicing one man in half. He then swung it diagonally and found it unexpectedly blocked. "I got yu now!" The bandit has some skill. However "You are too naive." He released his right hand and splayed his fingers out wards. "Fireball." He muttered. The man had a surprised look on his face as he was engulfed in flames.
"Trash." Is all that Kira said. He faced the rest of the bandits, ignoring the screams of the dying man. He spun his bladed staff, keeping them at distance. They looked back at Kira, circling nervously.
He checked his mana capacity. '200 mana left. I can take 20 out with fireballs and cut down the remaining.' He looked at Obito and Rin. They were standing with grins on their faces, sure of their victory. He pointed a finger at the two of them before downing 5 mana potions. They looked at Kira in confusion. "You're dessert. Don't run."
"DON'T IGNORE US!" A bandit screamed and rushed Kira, sword held high. Kira didn't even look at him as he cast a fireball, burning him alive. The bandits recoiled in shock and fear, thinking about their next move.
Unfortunately, Kira didn't waste any time and rushed straight into them, cutting people apart left and right. He slashed a young man, barely 20, in half. 'Wrong profession amateur.' He moved onto another, slightly older man. Fear ran across that man's face. Kira disemboweled him nonetheless.
These bandits were only level 9, completely outmatched when faced with a level 19 Kira. He mercilessly slashing left and right, ignoring the shouts and thumps when a dead body hit the floor. He looked as though he was dancing. A deadly dance of death.
He suddenly stopped. He was covered in blood and looked around; people were running away. "Don't run away!" He cackled like a demented child. "LET'S PLAY!" With that, he spied the back of the nearest bandit.
"Lightning bolt." He threw it, hitting the man in the back. Convulsing in pain, he screamed and collapsed. He threw another one, and soon the only bandits that were standing were Obito, Rin and the large bandit carrying a great axe. Each and every other bandit was dead; fried burnt or in pieces.
Kira had throw lightning bolts in their direction, but they had either blocked it or dodged.
Level 18. It said above the unidentified man's head. The trio approached Kira, surrounding him. Kira, on the other hand, nervously gripping his weapon. 'These people are trained and outnumber me.' He desperately searched a way out of this situation. 'Think. Think. THINK!'
He remembered one of his training days. His father was the instructor and he remembered the moves clearly. The great axe was 9 meters away from him.
'First you must have two weapons. This is essential for this move to work.'
Kira sheathed his sword and pulled out a throwing knife out of his inventory. He approached the great axe. His enemy reached for his weapon, albeit nervously.
'For this move to work, your opponent needs to feel fear.' Check.
He held his throwing knife up. The bandit's eyes moved from Kira to the knife. His father's words rang in his head.
'Drop it.'
He dropped the knife, confusing the man. The man's eyes were still glued to the knife. 'Perfect.'
Kira clapped his hands. A loud bang made the man lose focus. Kira took advantage of that; he went into the Iai stance and ran straight at him, cleaving the man in two; his body hitting the ground with two thuds.
Rin and Obito stood in shock. Once again, his father's words resounded.
'Do you realise why it works John? The reason why this move works is because it forces your opponent's mind to blank out. They are slow to react for a second or two.' Kira looked at the two remaining. 'Once their mind blank out, kill them."
Rin pulled out two short kunai out. Obito reached for a small sphere and a kunai. Kira drew his sword.
This was the final round.

Recruit - An Infinite Labyrinth prequel
A prequel to The Infinite Labyrinth. The year is 1816. The British Empire is in full swing, under the auspices of King George III. The Infinite Labyrinth has been pouring out its product from beyond our reality and fostered a new industrial revolution. Times are changing, and the people of London are feeling the winds of the revolution while British Professionals push into the Labyrinth. The newly formed Artefact Hunting Company is looking for recruits, and they have new technology to help them. From the slums of London, they aim to recruit a new wave of Professionals. And make Zacharias and the Earl of Carnavon lots of money. So, for Rowan Rivers and a handful of lucky ones, it's time to head into the Labyrinth, and discover what makes it different from England. And what makes THEM different? Recruit is a bunch of chapters I wrote to create to the setting, mood, and game systems of the Infinite Labyrinth. It is NOT a complete story in the classic sense. It's more of a slice of life view of early days of a normal Professional from the Infinite Labyrinth, and it's heavy on info-dump. It's 90% canon - there's probably a bit of a difference between how some characters and common behaviour are portrayed here and how they'll come out in the main story. Set two years before the events that kick-start the main series, it features some of the secondary/peripheral characters of the Infinite Labyrinth and will tell you all about the basic mechanics of the Labyrinth's RPG system. It can be considered a spoiler, as the characters in the Infinite Labyrinth are going to need to figure out all that, on their own. But if you like a much deeper exposition in the mechanics, here it is. The entire prequel is about 80 pages long.
