《Sins of the Father》Chapter 4: Quiet Doubt

“There’s the horse.” One said.
Daxton spit on the ground and rubbed it smoothly on the dirt, he eyes the speckled horse like an enemy flying in from the backside, his partner gave a low grin and unbuckled his six-shooter…it was time to find what they were looking for. Jade managed to keep out of sight until the two men came out of the dress shop and then back into space between two stores…they saw here straight on.
“Where are you going, miss?” Daxton asked with a chuckle.
Jade backed up slowly her feet turning inward, she tried to straighten them out, but it was of no use, they knew.
“Leave me alone.” Jade practically screamed inside her head, but it came out in a cool whisper that could soon be denied.
“Kitten trying to be a tiger.” Garvin gave an evil smile that showed his partly brown and yellow teeth, Jade choked in disgust.
She was back to the wooden fence that kept her in like a rabbit about to be torn about by two rabid wolves. She put her brown boot up against the fence fingering the knife that had given her hope, but the hope was drained from the bucket and the bucket could not find a well.
Jade ran past both men, if she could just get to the opening and in the dirt road of the sheriff and other men she could find freedom…her mother…and the truth. “How long does this last?” Jade mocked herself for thinking she could make it. Just as two horses rode by and Jade was at the opening a rough hand jerked her back and the two horses came in the alley.
Her heart screamed, freedom, those men were to save her.
“How is she?” The older one asked.

“What? They work…for…them.” She grasped the dagger thinking of killing herself but thought better of it, “a fool’s move…”
“Ah, just a little excited.” Garvin patted her on the shoulder roughly and grabbed onto it until she fell to the ground under his bitter command once again. She heaved. They grinned. They had won the race.
“We will take her to the base, where she can be watched carefully.” The younger one of the two new riders finally spoke over the other three. She looked at him as he looked at her, he patted his gun and looked at her with his crystal blue eyes, she returned the favor and looked with him in disgust, there was no color it seemed in her eyes…just hate. He pushed her hair back on his haunches.
He leaned in so much the smell of a day’s ride went to Jade’s nose like blood to a mountain lion… “Don’t run anymore, it is no use to you.” He whispered in her ear and pulled back, the others waited for her to say something, and she did not fail them.
“Why would I do anything you say? You have my body in your grasp, but you will never have my heart.” She waited.
“Unless we cut it out.” He smiled, and she pulled back in fear, would he do that? No, surely…yes, he would.
“Here is what you are going to do, you are going to get on that horse and ride at my side, if anyone says hello say hello back happily and be on your way, I will do the talking besides that…let’s go.” The older man of the two new riders suggested.
“Are you sure it will work, Will?” Garvin asked.
“Yes, I am.” Will replied.
“Johnny, get the horses.” Daxton commanded.
“Yes sir.”
They rode out.

Dear Spellbook (Rewrite)
Live. Study. Repeat. Tal never saw himself as an adventurer, but the call to adventure never much cared for his opinion. Despite his best efforts, his search for answers on the murder of his parents ever draws him into danger. Accompanied by a group of seasoned warriors, thus far Tal has gotten by on his own meager magical talents, but when one day he wakes up to find himself back in his bed of the night before, he is faced with a challenge he must conquer alone. What to expect: This story was born of an attempt to create in world lore reasons for many of the mechanics and tropes of D&D, but you do not need to know of them to enjoy the story. It's a single POV time loop story with slow paced progression fantasy elements. The story is not one of fast-paced power ups and non-stop action, but as it progresses, the action picks up. There is a lot of magic system exploration on a system built to unify the diverse magic of D&D into one cohesive magic system. The setting is an original world with familiar races and monsters but with new unique origins and motivations. The average chapter will be 2-5k words long, most being around 3k but there are a few less than 1k, due to the nature of the story telling device I used. Book 1 is complete. Posting is on hold until I finish book 2. Book 2 progress: The rough draft is done at 141656 words as of 7/9/2022. I need to reread and edit it but Im aiming for resuming chapters in September.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
