《When Death walked the world》Chapter 38

Deep inside the Great Tomb of Nazarick, on the 8th floor stood a magnificent sanctuary. The Cherry blossom sanctuary truly did justice to its name, as the flowers blooming there never withered away.

This specific area was tightly guarded, so much so that the leader of the Pleiades, Aureole Omega herself watched over the place. There was a good reason for this, as this area normally housed the guild weapon, the staff of Ainz Ooal Gown.

Although, it hadn't been returned to its designated place, but Aureole didn't mind that. It was a weapon meant to be wielded by the guild master, so it was only right that he carries it. Still, she couldn't help but sigh, as she missed the sight of the magnificent golden instrument, floating gently above the pacific lake and the many cherry blossom petals.

Her eyes were drawn to the elf before her, "Ellee, was it?" She was a guest of the Supreme One, though if the rumors were to be believed then she was much more than that, Aureole would get to the bottom of this.

"Right."

"So, tell me, how did you meet Ainz Ooal Gown?"

Evileye garbed in a crimson cloth and a white mask obscuring her vampiric features hurried through the streets of E-Rantel. But she wasn't alone. There was terror written on the faces of commonfolk as everyone either froze in place, ran, or hid in hopes of escaping what was coming.

The skies have been chaotic for as long as most could remember, but today something unprecedented occurred. The battered skies finally gave out under the pressure, and shattered into brilliant specks of light, leaving only darkness above, darkness that continued to close in on the ground below.

People feared the darkness, they feared the unknown. For they knew the darkness was crawling with terrible entities, they just didn't know how many, or how strong. What they knew was that in the coming days most would perish, a fate worse than death would befall them. To escape such an end there were numerous suicides, those who couldn't bear to face the horror that was to come, they ended their lives.

Evileye was on her way to her comrades of Blue rose, when suddenly she came to an abrupt halt. It wasn't intentional however, as she felt her feet rooted into the ground. She could feel her cold body frozen in place, refusing to move, as if to play dead. Such a sigh greeted her that her body had decided instead of her what the only way of survival was… and that was to play dead.

Before her very eyes something moved within the darkness… a long body coiled around and about as it became thicker and thicker. Its scales roared as they scraped against each other. Then, a lighting spread out in the darkness, illuminating the beast within.

A giant snake. One whose size was unimaginable, with its absurd body proportions it blotted out even the darkness, as its huge form coiled around, ready to launch and devour the world.

Evileye staggered as she willed herself to move, she had to… she had to get the others and escape. There was no hope left for mankind. Not in this damned country anyways.

Jircniv, ruler of the United Holy Empire waited impatiently inside his royal carriage.

They were at the last check up before going inside the capital city, and even though he had sent a message detailing his business with the elven ruler, it seemed as though he were treated as simple commonfolk. Certainly not in a way royalty should be handled.

"Incompetent elves, what the hell is taking so long?!" Jircniv finally had enough and got off his carriage only to feel an ominous chill. He had an enchanted coat that should've negated such alignments, but… — his eyes strayed to the sky, and then, he understood.

Rachel rushed down the bright corridors of the elven palace. She has woken from her slumber not long before, the marks of the previous battle still showing on her tanned skin as she moved with a clear goal in mind.

When she awoke, she instantly recognized the place as the palace's infirmary and knew that she had been rescued. She questioned her caretakers, where were the others? Thankfully, soon Gabriel showed up and it didn't take long for the others to arrive either. But as she was briefed about the events her throat dried.

Ellee was nowhere to be found. If what the others had said were true, then she had ordered for their retreat as she took on the abomination head on. Their clash sending out waves of power that was felt all the way to the elven cities.

Rachel felt pride overwhelm her regarding her foster mother's actions, nevertheless she couldn't help but worry. Was she alright? In the end she had no doubt in her mind that she was victorious, however did she suffer any injuries? If so, how severe? Don't tell me… she thought as she stared deep within the eyes of Gabriel. She hasn't returned yet, has she?

She plummeted to the ground but was on her feet fast, so fast in fact that her earlier blunder could all but be ignored. She left the room, leaving the confused guards and the remaining sacred flames in dust while she made her way out of the palace. She had to see their mother for herself… as she made her way to the sight of the battle she could only pray.

That was when it happened. The skies darkened to a degree where even the stars could not be seen, and a thunderous noise shook the heavens.

She came to an abrupt halt as her vertically split pupils took in the scene above her.

A giant snake curling itself threateningly high above the horizon, ready to burst into an unrelenting assault. Hunger reflected in its reptile eyes as it eyed its prey — the world, the planet.

The guardians were notified of their master's plan thanks to Demiurge, and upon learning it they have reached a consensus. They could not allow their merciful master to get hurt.

Feeling at their inner selves they resolved themselves. If they had to betray their master in order to protect him, even if it meant weathering his unruly wrath, then they would do it. They would do it; they would defy him in order to shield him from harm and they would have no remorse. And they would do it as many times as necessary, consequences be damned.

The guardians moved under Demiurge's plan as it was earlier decided that Albedo wasn't in a state of mind to lead, while Demiurge also instructed a Demon Lord to contact the girl Ainz had introduced them in the morning. The elven ruler could help, after all her knowledge of the world is superior to his own in every respect, at least for now. She could also help appease the Supreme one when his wrath would shower upon them… it was a great idea.

If his hunch was correct then she would support them in what was to come, and even if she didn't, it's not like she can warn Ainz. The Evil Lord of Wrath should be more than capable of containing, imprisoning her until all went down.

High above the blackened clouds of the raging storm a purple gown billowed ominously in the winds of destruction. Hellish fires burnt with soul devouring intensity as they stared up at the void of the night, fixated on a looming dragon.

Ouroboros, the World Serpent.

Neither a snake, nor a dragon, yet both. Its scaly body coiled around, circled the skies while its own maw was filled with its very own body, seemingly devouring itself.

As it circled the skies unimpeded, unbothered by the terrible storm that raged around it Ainz couldn't help but look at the beast with apprehension. A World Class Enemy. Not only that, but a high tier, an end game one at that. The one who devours worlds. Truly, a flying catastrophe.

He looked down at his robes, 8 wooden sticks adorned his belt, cash items sealed within God-tier weapons, the treasure of his comrades, his long-gone friends. They would be a last resort.

His crimson orbs strayed to the unremarkable watch hidden underneath his gown, "Haaah," he let out a sigh, "I just hope I can time this right.", he said as his crimson orbs slowly turned towards the looming threat, ready to face a challenge once more. He could swear that a horribly voice laughed at him, as it seemingly echoed from all directions. He didn't need to guess who that was. He knew her well enough.

"That bitch!" He exclaimed in frustration. "Just you wait, I'll pay you back 10 times, 20 times, no, 41 times for what you've put me through! You hear me?! I am coming for you!" He shouted to the heavens, yet no answer came.

Silence was his only answer while his perception picked up a change in the atmosphere, not a moment later the world serpent shifted dangerously as it spit out its own tail and elevated its reptile eyes, sizing him up. No, that wasn't right. Its eyes yearned for not his death, but for the world's.

Its split pupils gleamed in the terrible thunderstorm as its body moved, shifted into position, preparing to indulge in the spoils that was the new world.

Ainz looked on impassively at the foe, the one which clearly didn't consider him a worthy opponent, but inside Ainz could feel his nerves strain and bulge on his forehead, even though it's been many centuries since he walked as one of the living.

Although, he preferred if he were underestimated, but still… in the past centuries he had built up a certain pride, a pride that he could not let go of so easily. He was prideful, he was proud. He was proud of his guild of Ainz Ooal Gown, and throughout the years he had become one with said legacy.

If one looked down on him, then they disrespected Ainz Ooal Gown, and if someone would try and drag the name of his beloved guild through the dirt, — he would not allow it. Still, he wasn't arrogant, there was a fine line between being prideful and arrogant, and Ainz exercised his wisdom to stay in the positive side.

Ainz smiled cruelly, but his skeletal visage didn't change. Nevertheless, the world serpent surely felt something as its hungry eyes turned on the levitating skeleton in front of it.

Ainz didn't hesitate any longer and attacked. In due time, long before the battle he had exhausted many perishable items, as well as went through his repertoire of buffing spells. He wouldn't trust anything on chance. He was Ainz Ooal Gown, and Ainz Ooal Gown does not know defeat!

The beast rushed towards him, but just before it could reach him, Ainz lifted his arm.

{Hundredfold Maximize Enchanted Boosted Eldritch Reality Slash} It was a mouthful, so Ainz was glad that he didn't actually need to spell it out. An old spell, empowered to the very limit.

Reality was distorted as dozens of slashes cut through time and space, his skeletal hand intertwined with dark green vines of eldritch origin, all the while burning in black flames, the flames which burnt the very soul, the flames of Hell.

The attack had an immediate effect, as the world devourer halted, however Ainz could not celebrate yet as the attack only seemed to aggravate the monstrosity. It gave up on catching him as suddenly an unprecedented amount of power swirled inside of its terrible maw, ready to burst and target Ainz.

For a moment, Ainz considered dodging the attack with {Greater teleport}, however should he do so the ground would be vaporized. He couldn't rule out the possibility that the attack would straight up shoot a hole through the planet and that would be unfortunate.

As Ainz saw the rapidly enclosing beam of darkness he didn't hesitate and stood his ground.

Many would think he was crazy for doing such a thing, but he had a plan. Abruptly, his mana pool drained as a swirling mass of darkness blocked the way of the beam. A reworked {Gate} spell, although it was risky, it was the only way to negate the attack. He would transfer the attack into space, hoping he didn't destroy some random planet with intelligent life on it, but even if he did, he could not allow himself to worry about that at times like this.

As the attack after a grueling 20 seconds came to an end Ainz stopped feeding his mana into the gigantic gate that took up several dozen if not hundred miles in diameter, he hoped to use such a spell sparingly as it consumed up an enormous amount of mana.

He could probably cast it twice with the mana reserves he had as an Yggdrasil player, now that his mana had grown exponentially, he could probably cast it indefinitely, but it wasn't the only spell he had to channel his power and a stalemate wasn't exactly his ideal outcome.

He had also cast a few trap spells, not many but enough. It would be a good distraction.

If he detonated them all at once, then he was confident that he could win a moment or two to think of the next action. It was a dirty play, but… it was stupid to die in battle just because you were too proud to use every opportunity for your greatest benefit.

He was also ready to flee if need be. If he could not win today, then he could always just escape and come back another day and be victorious. After all, information was vital if the opponent was on the same or a higher level than oneself. Today's skirmish was also to that end, to gather information.

Although, the beast before him was intent on devouring the world, so he may not get another chance to face the fierce being. As such he had to stop it here and now.

Ainz counterattacked after the gate closed with his favorite spell. {Grasp heart} Needless to say, he had also enthusiastically empowered this spell, however the world bosses' absolute immunity to instant death was palpable as the creature simply shrugged it off. Still, the stun effect of {Grasp heart} was all the time he needed as he followed up with another torrent of boosted reality slashes.

The skies around him howled in pain as the wounds in space and time closed ever so slowly. The eldritch energies resisted reality's pull to order, but Ainz couldn't get distracted now.

The serpent was getting more and more agitated as it lashed out with its terrible breath attack in all direction, forcing Ainz to burn abysmal amounts of mana while shielding the planet and himself from the impact of such corrosive matter.

Ainz seeing that this was going nowhere decided to summon his trump card. But just before he could, something impossible happened. Suddenly his surroundings blurred, and he felt his power surpassed, limited.

He recognized the frozen chains surrounding him. This shouldn't be possible.

He was in the most secure prison of the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick, the one where even high-level beings could be restrained. Still, he didn't understand what was going on as a disheveled girl, — Nigredo was eyeing him with crazy eyes.
