"What time is it? I want to sleep. I don't want to go to work..."
Telfer stirred and groggily opened his eyes. Instead of finding his alarm clock that was placed at his bedside, he felt an odd vibration on his wrist. Right, he was now living on the Great Archipelago, not Earth. His smartwatch- he had set an alarm for 7.00 am before he went to sleep. Telfer turned off the alarm in annoyance when a notification popped up. It came from an "Unknown" sender. Telfer clicked on it and found a new set of instructions. The instructions said,
"Hello, assassin 150, in case you haven't thought about a backstory yet as Keven Firman, we have drawn one up for you. As to why we did not send you one with the last set of instructions, your application into the school was just accepted. Your identity as Kevin Firman would be like so. Kevin Firman, born in Blackmaw Stronghold, where Fruinga has fought countless battles against demons. Both parents have fallen in battles, allowing him to inherit a massive amount of money. While attending Blackmaw Magic School, Kevin displayed high potential after awakening the Poison Element. Thus, Kevin was transferred to Vestak Magic School on a recommendation letter. Your assigned class will be class 1D. You will be handed a student handbook when you officially enter class. Here's some information on Vestak Magic School and how to get there as well. One of the best schools in Fruinga but disappointing results in recent years have threatened its position as one of the best. Hence, Vestak Magic School is now scrambling to attract geniuses to keep itself afloat, a reason why your application was accepted. To get there, just click on the attached file and follow the directions. Lastly, our associate Bryan has removed the speech restriction on you. With that, we wish you the best of luck. Regards, the People's Blade."
Are they that desperate to accept any random application that comes through? So I'm an orphan huh? Guess it was easier for admministration. Oh well, time to go to school. Who will I run into today? Maybe they will be psychopaths...
Telfer grimaced as he recounted the first 2 conversations he had in this world. Shaking his head, Telfer stood up and started making his way to Vestak Magic School with the help of the directions.
This should be it.
A majestic marble statue of an old bearded man clad in robes stood over Telfer. Behind the statue was a fountain complete with a garden filled with orchids and marigolds. Telfer took in the beautiful scenery and strolled into the school compound, completely oblivious to the students streaming into the school. However, a quick glance at his smartwatch which displayed 7.25am sent him scrambling.
I can admire the scenery later. I need to find my class first. 1D was it? Aha, there's a sign. Let's see...Magic Training Practical Area, Cultivation Rooms, Library, Arena...why is this campus so big? Found it, classrooms somewhere to the right.
Telfer's eyes lit up upon seeing "Classrooms" and ran off in the direction of the classrooms. Telfer found his classroom in the nick of time. The polished metal door slid open and a blast of cold air hit Telfer, forcing his eyes to shut.
"Good morning everyone, today we have a transfer student who will be joining our class. Why don't you introduce yourself?"

A shrill female voice rang out.
Telfer opened his eyes and stepped into the classroom. Turning to face the students, Telfer said, "Hi everyone. I'm uh... Kevin Firman from...Blackmaw Stronghold. I use poison magic."
Hushed whispers came from around the classroom. Blackmaw Stronghold? Isn't that a warfront? Why is he all the way over here?
"Please keep quiet everyone. Here's your student handbook. Where should I place you? How about over there, beside Nicholas?"
Telfer turned and faced the teacher. Years of experience as an office worker told him that the smile and tone used was that of a command and not a question. No matter how much Telfer wanted to sit at the empty seat in the corner there was no other option besides sitting beside Nicholas.
"Ok." Telfer said grudgingly and moved towards his seat. Short blonde hair with bright eyes. Freckles and a smile with pearly white teeth.
He's either an extremely nice guy or a huge blabbermouth. I should be grateful that he isn't a psychopath.
Telfer sat down and looked at his neighbour.
"Now that everyone is formally here, I shall introduce myself. I am Bernice Altham, you can call me Miss Altham. Let's take attendance." Miss Altham's voice seemed piercing to Telfer now.
Meanwhile, Nicholas had started talking, "Hi, I'm Nicholas. You know I was sooo bored until you came. Let me tell you about myself..." After that, Telfer heard nothing else. He stared at the female teacher. A nicely proportioned body with ample curves which was further brought out by her tight fitting clothes. However, the slitty eyes and shrill voice made Telfer think of a snake.
This teacher is gonna be a pain to deal with. What a waste of a nice body...
"Hello? Are you awake?"
A hand passed by Telfer's face and he turned to face Nicholas.
"I thought you had fallen asleep. I mean some people do sleep with their eyes open right?" Nicholas blinked at Telfer. Telfer looked at Nicholas innocent appearance and thought, Was this how I looked like back then? Why do i feel sorry for him?
Nicholas continued to introduce himself and gave Telfer some information on studying in school. There were 3 things he had gleamed from the conversation. Number 1, everything you needed to know was recorded in your student handbook. Since it was digital, it was much easier to work with. Number 2, the students used a form of currency called mana crystals. As long as you had enough mana crystals, you could exchange for anything within the school. Lastly, students were encouraged to go on missions posted by the school. Mission rewards were usually in the form of mana crystals, which could be found in demons or magical beasts. Basically, it was possible for Telfer to bring out the Eternal Harmony but he needed an exorbitant amount of mana crystals.
"Maybe you should tell me about yourself since I'm done."
Nicholas beamed at him. Just as Telfer was about to speak, homeroom period had ended and class was starting. The class immediately quietened down. Telfer looked around the class. Everyone, including Nicholas had opened up their digital textbooks. It was oddly stifling for a class of 30 to be so quiet. An old bald man dressed in robes walked into class.
"Morning everyone. I see there is a new face. My name is Adam Dawson and I am currently a 7th circle mage. You can call me Mr. Dawson for short. Today, we will be discussing how mages cast spells and how spells can grow along with the mage. Mages cast spells by drawing spell matrixes within their sea of consciousness. These spell matrixes are essentially channels which mana can flow through. When mana flows through these spell matrixes, the mage is able to cast the specific spell. The higher the level the spell, the more complicated the spell matrix is. Mages can either draw spell matrixes on their own or use external help such as memory scrolls to implement a complete spell matrix. However, a single memory scroll is extremely expensive and hard to come by. As everyone knows, mages rank from 1st circle to 9th circle. Let's take fire mages for example. It would make sense that a 9th circle mage can cast let's say Fireball at a much greater speed and power compared to a 1st circle mage. Why is that so? A 9th circle mage would be more familiar with the matrix compared to a 1st circle mage. Furthermore, their level of control and amount of mana far surpass that of 1st circle mage. Although it is impossible for a 1st circle mage to ever catch up to a 9th circle mage in terms of power, it is theoretically possible to cast it with the same arount of time. This is because, the greater the familiarity in a particular spell matrix would mean a shorter time required to cast the spell. New student, please tell me your name and the type of magic you use."

Mr. Dawson grinned at Telfer.
"My name is Kevin and I use poison magic." Telfer hastily replied.
"Poison magic? That's a rare one. The spell for the 1st circle should be Poison Hand. So in this case, let's say Kevin has practiced Poison Hand to such a high degree of familiarity that he can cast it instantly. However, that is not all. When a mage practices a spell to such a high level, it is possible for the spell to mutate in a manner specific to the mage. So Kevin's Poison Hand spell could let's say, instead of just enveloping his hand, it can extend its reach as well. There are a multitude of possibilities as mutations are unique to each mage. Now, each spell is also split into 3 different levels, namely low, medium and high depending on the mage's power output of the spell. Mutation of a spell at any level can affect the rest of the levels. A clearer example of how mutations can occur is in magical beasts. Magical beasts are born with innate spell matrixes. For example, 2 Frost Wolfs have the Frost Claw spell. However, one of them uses Frost Claw can use Frost Claw at a distance to render enemies immobile while the other gives up the range for increased damage. As such, there are endless possibilities in the world of magic..."
Mr. Dawson continued talking for a whole hour. Meanwhile, Telfer was completely absorbed within the lesson. There was so much to the world of magic! Unbeknownst to him, there was a constant stream of system notifications.
"Host's wisdom has increased by 0.01"
"Host's wisdom has increased by 0.01"
It was only until when lesson ended that Telfer woke up from his trance-like state. The constant stream of notifications caused Telfer to open his status window in a hurry.

My wisdom increased my a whole fucking point! My mana regen increased as well. Shit this guy is a god at teaching! 2 weeks of his lessons means a possible increase of 10 points? No wonder everyone went quiet...
Telfer glanced around the classroom. Everyone was still in stupor. Wait...they were sleeping!? How could they miss out on this chance?
Telfer looked at his student handbook. Next period was mana cultivation for 3 hours. A young man in his early thirties walked in with his chin held high. "Everyone please assume your most comfortable position, we will start cultivating mana. Close your eyes, take a deep breath in, and out, in, and out. Sense the mana around you and draw it in. Carry on." Telfer immediately faceplanted.
How the fuck is he a qualified teacher? Deep breath in, deep breath out? Just sense the mana?
Telfer followed the instructions and found that it was true. There were some light blue specks floating around which he could draw towards himself. When he absorbed them, Telfer could feel them move towards the centre of the body where they would stop.
Is that the legendary mana organ?
The rate of absorption of mana around Telfer increased significantly once he got the hang of it. However, at the end of the lesson, the feeling of emptiness left Telfer greatly disappointed. His face downcast, he thought, is this because of my low intelligence stat?
The next period was about magical beasts and demons. Although Telfer was greatly interested, the drone of the teacher left him too bored. He searched up on his smartwatch how to increase rate of absorption of mana. There were many different answers such as simply cultivating for a long time, or using pills and other treasures. However, the most cost effective answer was a glyph, much like the control glyph inside him. The glyph was called the mana absorption glyph and was the most requested glyph among the masses. However, glyphs were extremely hard to produce. First, you had to find a glyph inscripting master. Second, you were at the mercy of the glyph inscripting master, meaning you had to fork out any sum of money the glyph inscripting master requested. Third, there was a great deal of pain involved and pausing to take a break from the pain would increase the chances of failure. However, people still hired glyph inscripting masters for the long term investment. By the time Telfer was done with his research, school had already ended.
Telfer let out a long sigh and lamented, Why was the path to getting stronger so hard?
*Ding*
There was a notification in his handbook. It read, "Student Kevin Firman, you have been assigned to Dorm 324."
Time to rest and recollect what I learnt. Phew. At least I am able to get a proper roof over my head. That shack of a house wouldn't cut it.I wonder how my dormmate will be like...
With his head held high, Telfer headed to his dormitory.

Magikind [Original]
The third millennia, a time of change and evolution. An era, where people, through countless generations, have evolved strange powers and abilities. Through several centuries of selective breeding, these beings, known as mages, have become part of the very foundations of society. However, some refused to change or adapt. They believed in purity and refused to interbreed with magikind. Known as the manush, they were a rarity among society. Now, in the fifth millennia, the manush are thought extinct. With magikind ruling the world, a three-way war grips society. In these uncertain times, a manush called Gin, will herald a new era for all Magikind. A story of how man could realistically evolve while still pushing boundaries. Disclaimer: Chapters will be edited once the first volume is done. Bear the beginning for the time being, and hopefully you can see my writing improving over time (I've learnt a lot on how to write because of this (though I'm still not perfect :P)) Proud Member of Writers to the End, WriTE The link to the pledged fictions PS. If you find the 'notes' too boring or too info-dumpy, feel free to skip them and just read the main chapters. They're there for the reader to understand Gin's world (written in the perspective of Gin). But later on, we can see some interactions between the main characters and the occasional references to his past in the notes, so it has its purpose.
