Chapter 36 :
Swallowing the last bits of the disgusting taste from the collars, Will tried not to puke it out as he figured it's those things that doesn't taste good, that's good for you!
Yep, yep, it DEFINITELY can’t possibly blow up or anything, it’s only supposed to taste bad, not hurt him.
(Will) “Well, I guess that’s the last of it.”
Looking at the Beastkin girls, who all were holding what's left of their slave collars in their hands and staring hard at it. Some liked Ruby looked happy, and others had strange expressions on their faces like Aqua.
She looked more angry then happy as she was looking at the collar.
(Well...at least that was that...now then…)
Suddenly, there was another surge of emotions that swept over Will.
HUNGER!
Looking around, Will found the spike-bowl he made and saw how all of the leaves he put in it was completely eaten by Blacky.
(Wow...apparently it eats a lot. Well good thing I can feed it whenever I want. I wouldn’t know what to do if it didn’t eat plants…I don’t even have the slightest clue on how to hunt for food!)
Happy that his new pet probably wasn’t hard to keep, Will thought about his other...pet.
(Will) [Hey, Greeny! You guys alright?]
After waiting for a while, there wasn’t any kind of reply from his other tamed monster.
(Weird… did something happen to Greeny and his mates?)
Opening his Tamer job screen.
---------------
DING!
The tamed creature : Greeny has successfully evolved!
Due to his evolution, Greeny’s forced bond has been broken!
Current bonds :
1/2
---------------------
(.....so, my pet got away? I literally just caught him!)
Then the appearance of the next screen surprised Will even more.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The galloping of hoofbeats thundered through a tiny village.
The villagers, hard at work on growing and harvesting looked up to the sound.
A whole group of cavalry soldiers were riding their way past the village, all of them were armed as if they were going to war.
(Captain) “Is this the place?”
One of the leading rider asked the soldier next to him.
(Soldier A) “Yes Captain! This route goes straight to the Hell’s Forest, and the path through it as well.”
Pulling a map out of the bag on the horse’s side, he unfurled it and showed it to the Captain.
(Captain) “HALT! All units, we’re taking a short break to rest! Afterwards, we’re going straight through to the enemies’ territory!”
Shouting loudly in support, the soldiers quickly dismounted and pulled out food and water as they formed groups to rest and talk.
(Soldier B) “Man, who would have known there really was a group that had the guts to travel through the forest and find a path through it! They must be filthy rich now!”
(Soldier C) “You think that was a group of courageous people? From what I heard they just took a bunch of those lowly demi-humans and forced them all into the forest at once. Then with a bunch of mages that were tracking them, they were able to find a route through the forest. Of course, from what rumors I heard, there isn’t a single survivor from that group.”
(Soldier D) “Well, at least they were useful for once in their entire existence.”
The other soldiers nearby agreed with his comment.
Meanwhile, as the soldiers were resting, in a hastily pitched tent the Captain was sitting on a fur rug as he looked through a pile of documents.
(Captain) “So these are all of our numbers and supplies?”
(Soldier A) “Yes, we have about 500 soldiers and their horses as well as 300 wagons filled with food and other supplies, each pulled by two horses and a driver. Then of these 800 people as well as including you, Captain, we have a average job level of 60 with several who are on their 2nd or 3rd tier. And lastly, we have about 200 magic users that are riding with the supplies and are in charge of supporting the soldiers.”
(Captain) “How about the map we received? Has it been verified that it really is a working path we can take? I don’t want to walk into a death trap.”
(Soldier A) “There shouldn’t be any problems, after all we got this straight from the higher ups, and they wouldn’t send all of this manpower to their death. Our job is just to make sure the path widen enough so that the main army can pass through and strike straight to the heart of the demons’ camp!”
Nodding, the Captain agreed with his aid.
(Captain) “Well then, we should get going after we take care of the rest of the preparation...and these paperwork….”
Seeing his expression as the Captain looked at the stack of papers on the ground, his aid smiled.
--------------------------
The afternoon sun was rising above the horizon when the camp started moving again and begun taking down and putting all their items back to their bags.
Quickly the soldiers were ready and on their horses, ready to start their journey again.
Settling himself on his own horse, the Captain started to address him men.
(Captain) “Alright men! Get ready! We’ll be arriving in only a few hours from now! Mages! Prepare yourselves, and don’t start wasting your mana pointlessly! Warriors! Make sure that your weapons are ready and sharp! Let’s set off!”
After speaking, the Captain turned his horse around and started galloping towards the direction of the Hell’s Forest.
The soldiers immediately lead their horses to follow after their Captain.
Running a few hours on horseback, the towering trees of the forest could be seen from their location.
Yelling over the sounds of their galloping, the Captain turned around to look at the soldiers behind him.
(Captain) “Alright men! We’re heading straight in! Remember, we’re aiming to try to go straight through in one shot! Only engage in battle if we can’t avoid it! Mages, move into the center! Try using spells that can repel enemies and stop their movements!”
Acknowledging their leader, the soldiers nodded as the wagons were moved into the center of the riding soldiers. The mages riding the wagons started their magics. Colorful lights flashed as several of the mages summoned their minions. Floating Elementals, magical monsters, and even stranger creations started moving alongside the riders.

(Soldier Z) “Hey, did you just summon what I think you did?”
One of the soldiers commented to a rather irritated mage next to him as he was riding beside the mage’s wagon.
(Mage A) “Oh, shut up! It’s not like I can choose what I summon!”
Both of them were looking at the small tiny fluffy kitten sitting on the mage’s lap.
(Soldier Z) “Really? How does that work? I just saw one of those other guys create a giant earth golem from the ground, can’t you do something similar? Like, I don’t know, summon something that could actually fight?”
(Mage A) “Look, I’m a freakin level 48 Summoner, and I still have absolutely NO control over my summons! Literally! It takes the same amount of mana to summon a fire-breathing dragon as it does a kitten! And no! I DON’T KNOW WHY!”
(Soldier Z) “Alright, alright! Dude, calm down! I just didn’t know! I thought you just liked kitties or something….Man…”
Leading his horse away from the somewhat unstable mage, he continued to follow the rest of the group along with their mismatched group of monsters and minions.
Within minutes the group plunged right into the forest without any hesitation.
Carefully maneuvering his horse through the twisted paths and animal trails that were sprinkled throughout the forest, the Captain led his men in the most direct route to the other side as he could.
However, just a few minutes after entering the forest, yelling and screaming came from the back of the group.
(Captain) “What the hell is happening? Man, we’re haven’t even barely gotten into the actual dangerous parts of the forest and we’re getting casualties?”
Reining in his horse, he made a wide circle before facing the direction he came from.
(Captain) “What the hell?”
Currently, the soldiers furthest from the Captain were being attacked by what looked like a group of monsters. From his view, all he could see was that they were being attacked by a lot of monsters, and that the monsters were gray colored.
The monsters were for some reason covering the soldier's’ head with their entire body. Making them unable to be fully seen.
Quickly commanding the rest of his soldiers, he yelled out orders.
(Captain) “Warriors! Get over there and take them out! Mages! Why the hell are you not hitting them with spells?”
The words were like an adrenaline rush to them and quickly the group went into formation with the warriors and other melee classes in the front and the magic classes in the back.
Charging forwards, the warriors pulled out their weapons from...where did they pull those from?
(Mage G) “Hey...did one of those guys just pull out a giant ass sword from his back? He literally just reached behind him, stuck his hand inside his armor and pull out that thing! It’s like TWICE his height! Where did he find room to put it? Hell, he even riding a horse! At least the horse should have showed some sort of reaction!”
(Mage H) “Dude, WE fire out giant balls of death from our hands. Why are you questioning these things?”
(Mage G) “Good point…”
As he was speaking, the mage stuck his hand into thin air and somehow a massive metal ball appeared floating above him.
(Mage H) “Um...what’s that?”
Mage G looked at the other mage with a confused looked.
(Mage G) “You feeling alright? I know it’s really stressful with the mission and all, but come on! You just said it! This clearly is my giant ball of death, duh!”
Mage G was looking as if he was speaking to a mentally retarded person, which kinda pissed off Mage H.
(Mage H) “Did you just call me stupid? I was talking about THIS!”
Stretching his hand forward at the backs of the rushing soldiers, he opened his hand with his palm facing them. The next second, a blazing ball of fire, the size of their wagon was shot out.
(Soldier Z) “That’s it! I QUIT! Who the hell let these psychos into our mission? And why am I always the one getting the brunt of their anger?”
Sadly for him, he was at the rear of the charging group, so he was almost directly in the line of fire.
Wielding his giant sword, he turned around and took a swing at the ball of flames.
Right before the two impacted, the soldier’s sword was covered in a veil of blue light. Then as if it was cutting nothing but air, the sword effortlessly split the fireball in two halves.
That then...kinda hit the guys beside him.
(Soldier E) “WHAT THE F*CK!”
Turning to Soldier Z, he took his steel mace and tried to smash his head off.
Sadly...or maybe luckily? The other soldier hit by the fireball was K.Oed by it.
So the poor dude and his horse all fell down. And was trampled by the wagons and other soldiers behind him. Poor guy, and all the king’s men couldn’t put him together...or his horse.
Parrying another wide swing by Soldier E with his sword, Soldier Z yelled at him.
(Soldier Z) “Dude! I didn’t do it! It was those guys!”
Pointing to the mages calmly sitting on their wagons behind his with his free hand, he continued to swing his sword to block off the death mace that kept persistently aiming for his head.
(Captain) “What the hell are you fools doing! Go attack the enemies!”
His words ended their “dispute” and the two quickly kicked their horses and run towards the battle.
After reaching the rear from his leading position, the Captain shows up to see his men trying to backstab each other, behind him was his aid riding along with him.
(Captain) “I thought I had those retards separated! Hey! Why didn’t you separate the messed up ones away from each other?”
Turning to his aid, the Captain asked with a rather annoyed look.
His aid returned his own look of helplessness.
(Soldier A) “Captain, I really tried! But there really were too many guys that had their own problems, and there were only so many normal people...so in the end I kinda just combined a few normal guys with a few unstable guys. It kinda worked...except I ran out of normal people to put with those two and yeah...if they had levels for messed-upness then they would be far higher than the other guys.”
(Captain) “So you just threw those two together?”
(Soldier A) “Well, what would you have done? Asked for another wagon to just have one person sit in it? It was already bad enough that they were the only ones sitting on one, some of the other wagons had 4 or 5 guys on it at once! So I thought if I placed them in a area where they can’t get into too much trouble then we wouldn’t really have to worry, which was behind that dude.”
Pointing towards Soldier Z, Soldier A continued.
(Soldier A) “That guy has the job, “Heavy Magical Warrior” a 3rd tier job. Apparently he went from a normal warrior to heavy warrior and then gained more mana than others and received this job. From what I know, he is able to cut magic itself.”
(Captain) “...You know, you might had made the best choice in this situation.”
As they conversed, they too were riding towards the battlefield. From what the Captain could tell it really...wasn’t looking too good.
(Captain) “So...any idea why one of those things with half of it’s body is still moving?”
The warriors were currently being massacred by the white monster. One warrior took his sword and ran it right through the body of one monster that was grabbing onto a soldier’s head. However the monster didn’t even seemed to feel a thing and with the sounds of bones cracking it tore the head right off the soldier’s body. Turning around, the monster directed it’s empty eyes at the person who had stuck a sword into it. Before lunging at his neck with it’s jaws while its body was still pierced through.
In another area, after violently struggling, one of the soldiers was able to force off the monster from his head, breathing heavily he watched as another soldier split the monster in half with his axe right through the middle of its head. As the axe wielder rode his horse towards him, the soldier watched as the he had his throat ripped apart by one of the sides of the split monster.
The chaos of the battlefield where the monsters didn’t care whether or not they were harmed and the soldiers who were being killed by them continued. Soon it was apparent that even when they slashed and smashed it into pieces. If a single bit can move, it’ll still try attacking the soldiers.
It had only been a few minutes since the attack and the group had lost a few dozen soldiers. Luckily since the mages weren’t attacking head on and were only throwing support spells at them, they didn’t have a single death.
However, their summons were a different story. Only the ones with elemental bodies or inanimate creatures like golems that were pretty much immune to physical attacks were unharmed. The ones possessing a real body had heavy wounds even though none have died yet. One of the summons, a Flame Wolf had one of it’s front legs torn off and was bleeding profusely, its scarlet blood painting a red color over the green and brown ground.
At first the Captain didn’t seem to care much, after all if they were going to die from a few weak looking monsters then they would be useless when they entered the real danger zones.
He had already identified the monsters attacking them, they were mainly Death Hounds, around Rank B level monsters. There were also a few random monsters in the mix, he could have sworn he saw a white goblin. With their strength they should have been able to wipe them out this group of monsters no matter what size they were as long as they were not ten times their numbers.
However as he watched the battle with more and more people dying from monsters that should by any means be dead, he started to become serious.
(Captain) “RETREAT! All forces fall back! Anyone that still haven’t left the area in the next few seconds will be blown up along with the monster! Mages! Prepare your strongest spells and fire it out as soon as it is ready! We have to destroy them!”
Pulling his sword from god knows where, the Captain also readies his magic. His job was “Holy Warrior” a 3rd tier job. However unlike Soldier Z, he was focused on healing and treatments as well as buffing allies in battle. Something that any army would need, but this time he was using “treatments” towards the monsters not his men.
As the sword in his hand became more and more bright with a golden radiance, a roar came from behind the monsters. Then as if they were the red sea before Moses, they parted and out came -
A large white winged tiger whose empty eyes seemed as if it has no will of its own. A monster from the dark ages. A - zombie.
---------------------------------------------
Now then let's go back a bit.
Remember how Will made that Catgon? Then remember how BEFORE he had that Catgon he made a nice number of purrfectly nice zombies and a skeleton? Then remember how he now had more than the number he could control? Ever wondered about where that extra he couldn't control went to?
Well, when Will had to...use a tactical retreat (AKA run for mew wife!!!), he err….forgot that little thing about going over the limit. So he created a new zombie.
Well...luckily it was only a zombie...had it been a skeleton then there would had been FIVE times more danger in that forest then before.
Anyways, there was a cute little kitty zombie that suddenly gained its...nothing. It had no commands to follow and thus only followed it’s instincts. So it wandered around for almost a hour in the forest. Where it found a weak monster - that goblin that the Captain saw. Like any RPG goblin, it was green skinned, a short 4 foot tall, weak enough to be killed by...really anything monster or in other words a pretty much SUPER weakling.
At that point, it was slowly heading towards the state of disappearing due to Will not providing any more mana to it. So it had only 2 hours after all...is what Will thought.
Seeing its prey, the cat zombie rushed towards it and before the goblin could do anything there was a lot of extra room for his blood to move around his neck. Or in other words, there were a lot of nice holes that were bitten by the cat zombie and they were pouring out blood.
After a while of struggling, the goblin died of bloodloss. Though cat zombie didn’t notice anything, all the mana that was once inside the goblin flew out and entered its body.
So unknowingly, it had extended its lifespan by the amount of mana it got from the goblin. From then on it continued to hunt and hunt and hunt some more!
At first it was only strong enough to kill goblins that were wandering alone. Then it moved to larger groups with 2 goblins and so on. In some battles, it lost and had various parts of itself destroyed or broken. But miraculously, the broken parts mended and it healed within minutes. It would then go back to attack the same group until it killed them all, before dragging the goblin’s dead bodies into a pile. This was a more of a instinctive thing to do, since it's...you know a ZOMBIE.
A tireless and unfeeling body allowed it to continue hunting, and the mana it gained allowed it to live longer. Of course it also was the source of it’s healing ability.
When the bodies became a small hill with several dozen goblins piled on top of each other, a light descended from above and shone on the cat zombie. Inside the light, it’s body swelled up as longer and thicker white fur covered its body. It grew from a small cat to a 6 meter long tiger, it’s wings also grew with it and reached almost a 13 meter long wingspan.
During this process, it started to gain a intelligence similar to the skeletons. Able to somewhat understand things with its low intelligence.
When the light disappeared, it found that the bodies of the goblins it was piling up had became a feast for a group of Death Hounds that was attached by the light.
Enraged, the newly evolved tiger zombie killed everyone of them. Then still mainly following its instincts, a flash of black light came from its eyes and the dead bodies of the Death Hounds stood up. Their bodies lost color until they turned white and the wounds that the tiger zombie inflicted on them knitted themselves up and repaired itself. The remaining goblin that wasn’t eaten by the hounds also stood up as it turned from its normal green skin color to pure white.
Standing before the tiger zombie was a group of 13 hounds and a lone goblin. Each looking at it with their undead eyes.
Not really caring about anything, it just wanted to continuously hunt for...something….the tiger zombie led its new minions into a new battle.
Which them bring us back to -
--------------------------------------------------------------
------------------
DING!
The host can now return the command of the zombie(1) back to him.
YES/NO?
-------------------
(Huh? What does it mean return back the command? Well...whatever, I guess I’ll go with - )

Heart of Cultivation
Book one is now available for purchase or download through Kindle Unlimited! Jian was a prodigy, at least until he discovered that his path of cultivation had hit a dead end almost as soon as it began. That was all years ago, though. He has long since resigned himself to his fate and prepared himself for a dull, ordinary, but happy life. Stunted cultivation or no, he's clever enough to carve out his own comfortable niche. Unfortunately, not all of the matters from his past have been settled. When a reckless mistake threatens to cost him everything, Jian will have to prove that he's desperate enough to rise to the occasion. Or that he's capable of avoiding the consequences. This is an affectionate reconstruction of the xianxia genre. I will be deploying the tropes from the genre that I enjoy in a framework that I think makes sense. The story updates on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and sometimes other days.
