Laying upon his bed in the mausoleum, the emperor doesn't see how everything he loved is burning after his death.
He gave life to the empire and with his death nothing remained to keep it alive.
Neither his sons nor daughters were capable to keep his legacy. All that remained from the once powerful empire were the trials of ascendence, which when completed would give the person unimaginable powers that could slay gods.
There were many ascendent over the years under the rule of the emperor, yet not one managed to finish the last trial which would have given him the right to compete for the throne or be announced as the successor. This was also the reason why the empire fell in the end.
Sitting upon the eternal throne of a forgotten empire, the emperor, more dead than alive, waits for his successor.
Sitting in a dark cell, the successor awaits for his chance to change his fate.
Two stories not connected will meet and change into one.
The successor will ascend, the predcessor will fade.
Nothing shall remain wihtout change.

TLDR - RWBY esque modern xianxia (everything is original to the best of my knowledge, but you can probably see where I drew my inspiration) 20 years ago, monsters manifested from negative emotions emerged and brought the world to its knees.
