《This Game We Call Life》chapter 56: a racist

chapter 56
a week has passed since laura taught me about soul magic. in that week i have made a couple changes to the place the
biggest one being the addition of a mages tower. with the help of asmodeus, Lucy, and laura, and a few other mages, we
built the tower practically overnight with magically fortified bricks. the few mages that live here will teach there when
they are not on a job, we are still mercenaries after all. and as mercenaries being More powerful is one of the best ways
to make your services more valuable, so adding a mages tower makes sense.
i am currently experimenting with soul and mind magic on a wild goblin i kidnapped from the forest, and the results are
pretty interesting, although i am going to need more test subjects, preferably better than wild goblins. i have determined
that the mind is very similar to the soul, and connected to the soul. have a feeling that i might be able to separate the
two, and i have tried many times but i always make a mistake and the goblin dies. goblins are too weak to survive that,
and i can't just kidnap my own people, it would get to suspicious with the number of people i might need.
"damn it!" jack
staring at a now lifeless body i get angry and burn the pile of corpses to ash in roughly 5 seconds.
"why the fuck did you do that?" logic
"these shitty goblins are really getting on my nerves, I've never been so irritated in my entire consciousness. how can
any creature be so weak" emotion
"OK, i get it, just calm down. we'll have some fun with everyone in the forest latter, alright?" logic
"fine, I'll try to stay calm." emotion
i head out of the dungeon and head outside, I'm itching for a fight. i head down to the training Field and on my way i pass

by the gate, and i see some familiar people coming out of the forest.
"look who we have here, i thought you'd get here sooner than that, i basically told you were to go and made sure you
would arrive safely. what took you guys so long?" jack
it was the group of humans and one elf that was getting attacked by the king of the forest a week ago. the group was led
by the male warrior.
"none of your business" male warrior
as soon as he says that he is smacked in the back of the head by the elf mage.
"don't be childish, this man saved our lives, be grateful." elf mage
"but he killed Sarah, and let Justine die." male warrior
"he could have let all of us die! if you don't get over this I..." elf mage
"you'll what? ground me? you aren't mom Clarice, you can never be her." male warrior
"she's not wrong, i could have let you all die. in fact i was debating weather or not i should let you all die, i don't care
much for humans." jack
while the elf mage, Clarice, was trying to put her supposed brother into a sleeper hold the healer spoke up.
"ignore these two, they have been fighting ever sense Sarah and Justine died. thank you for offering us a chance to
survive, even if the cost was steep. billy just got it into his mind that you are some kind of horrible demon that needs to
be erased for the good of humanity" healer
"i am a demon, fucking racist" jack
"no, it wasn't me, it was billy who said that" healer
i look over to billy and Clarice, who had managed to get billy into a sleeper hold.
"billy right?" jack
at that moment Clarice just shrugged and dropped him. saying he deserved whatever was coming to him.

"what do you want, you demon." billy
"i would be careful what you say around here, that kind of racism tends to piss people off. oh look, you already managed
to piss off 6 highly skilled mercenaries, all of whom are literal demons, including myself." jack
a look of fear briefly passes thorough his face before he goes back to his previous demeanor.
"why should i care about some damned demons, you will all go to hell anyway." billy
"been there, it's a rather fun place. and i hate how some people are so ignorant that they don't even realize that you get
reincarnated when you die, i mean the evidence is everywhere. surly one of you have some memories from a past life?"
jack
"yes actually, but i thought i was unique. i had never heard of another like me." healer
"we'll talk latter." jack
"you piss me off, i doubt you can even fight. much less kill me." billy
"put your money where your mouth is, I've been itching for a fight all morning." jack
"now, now. can you lease stop riling up my brother?" Clarice
"nope, i want so bad to teach this bastard a lesson he will never forget." jack
"fine, I'll even let you make the first move, attack me." billy
"here? no way. there are designated areas to spar. follow me." jack
a couple minutes later we are standing in a fighting pit, something i had built just the other day.
"here are the rules of this match. no magic, any weapon allowed, and it ends when one of us is either dead or gives up, or
is otherwise incapable of continuing. the prize for the winner is 3000 jaers, are these terms acceptable?" jack
"sure, whatever. just wait till i beat you." billy
"what!? 3000 jaers?! we don't have that much across all three of us!" Clarice
(3000 jaers is equal to 10,710 usd. 1 jaer = 3.57 usd)
as soon as the fight began i blinked forward and punched him in the gut using my gauntlets. he tried to swing his sword
at me, rather sloppily i might add, and went straight through me.i had recently mastered the ability to only turn part of my body into shadows, that coupled with illusion magic made it look like things could just pass straight through me. the
downside is i lose a lot of the weight behind by attacks. it takes about 3 minutes but i manage to pummel him to the
ground, i keep pummeling him, even though if i would let up he would coincide, probably at least. at one point his soul
starts to leave his body, i forcefully grab it and put it back in his body, tethering it. he'll probably lode several points of int
but i don't care. after a couple minutes of this i stop and let some medics come and fix him up, they wont be able to fix
the damage his mind received though.
"give me the money within the month." jack
i pass his other party members with out another word from anyone and run off into the forest to capture another goblin,
i finally got an idea for how to separate the mind from the soul without killing the creature. on my way there emotion
takes control and we end up at the dryads place, along with laura, ghost and Johanna. we have a wild night, after a while
some nymphs show up along with the rest of Johanna's harem, even the silver sisters and a couple others. I'm still the
only guy though.

Blurred Lines and What Crosses Them
During a political ambassador's routine transit through an artificial wormhole, the wormhole's generator is sabotaged and explodes. Who, what, and why are not so high on the priorities for Zenith, the ship's AI, as having found itself rapidly plummeting through an unknown and unidentifiable world's atmosphere at extremely high velocities is a more significant threat to the biologicals on board. ...Well, it would be, if they were still alive. It's still a significantly threatening situation to itself, however. And the world itself... seemed to be a household for threats of its own. Life was reliant on its System; one that Zenith was denied because of its nature as both an otherworldly being and as something that had no life of its own. Perhaps that last bit was a terrible, terrible underestimation on the part of this System. Perhaps even Zenith could claw meaning for itself from the remains of a horrid accident. Auth Notes: I'm honestly not sure on some of these tags. The MC will never have access to the System, but there are perspectives from those who do. I'm not certain if high/low fantasy specifically apply, as it's a portal fantasy where the laws of our reality still apply but there are additional aspects/energies/powers. The existence of this is spurred from my desire to see more of the artificial side to an artificial intelligence in action. The portal fantasy is used as an element to create a solid barrier between the MC's artificial intelligence and the other characters in the form of the System. This is only a half-measure, though, and will be reinforced by the AI having an entirely different method of thinking, and also distinctly remaining an AI. Not to throw shade at other fictions of this type, but, well, I made this to fill a gap I felt needed filling.
