chapter 27
"dad? is that you?" sally
"sally?! are you OK? where's your brother? open this door!" the twins father
"were safe, although i cant say the same for the vast majority of the other students" jacobe
while he's saying that i go open the door for his father.
"officer George" jack
"jack, here i was hoping you had died" George
"no, instead i was keeping your kids alive. show some gratitude to the one who has not only saved your life but your children's as well" jack
after i say that i notice a woman standing behind George.
"good to see you again, Cathrin" jack
to this she smiles and bows.
"how do you know our parents" Jacobe
"i saved your fathers life" jack
"he killed the man who was stalking your mom" George
"oh, i remember you saying something about that, it happened last year right?" sally
"but why do you hate him, dad?" Jacobe
"he, he's so infuriating" George
"his pointless sense of justice makes him hate me and his morals makes it so he can't do anything against me, after all he owes me a debt" jack
"my sense of justice is not pointless!!" George
"your right, it's pointlessly stupid" jack
"so, whats up with your mom?" joe
"she's mute" sally bluntly
"why don't you two join us for breakfast" uncle
we all go back to the table and finish off the Delicious pancakes.
"so, where is war and smith" jack
"your talking about that devil, right? he's still asleep, used a little two much poison" uncle
"and war was caught trying to dodge working and was forcefully brought back" aunty
"sounds like something he would do" jack
"master! I'm sorry i took so long, but mr smith wouldn't wake up" ghost
"it's fine" jack
"now you two come over here and eat breakfast" aunty
"yes mam" mr smith
"I'm curious, how did you know i was Asmodeus, my human disguise was perfect" mr smith
"a combination of intuition and your sent" jack
Advertisement
"well, there's nothing like a marshal artists intuition, i know from experience" mr smith
we finish eating with out any other meaningful conversations happening except for the twins catching their parents up on recent events.
"i want to get another evolution before we go home" Johanna
"so do i" jack
"well you can use the dungeon out back to train" aunty
"don't the dungeons close once they are cleared?" Selena
"this is a different dungeon, a repeatable dungeon. it's the only reason i built this house here" aunty
"I've been wondering, whats the difference between a creature in a dungeon and other creatures?" Joe
"creatures from a dungeon are existences known as damned souls, or souls our bound to a place. in this instance they are 'damned' to the dungeon, forever being reborn in the same form only to be a slave. their are also damned souls that are bound to the abyss, like Lucy here, who are summoned to be a slave to their summoner, usually becoming undead. usually these creatures end up going insane knowing nothing other than killing." Johanna
"why the fuck did i ever sign that contract 2,000 years ago" Lucy
"what contract?" jack
"some damned soul offer me power in exchange for replacing him, at least it let me stall the rise of the church by about 100 years" Lucy
"enough talking, i want to clear the dungeon at least once today" jack
"clear? don't the creature just reappear?" Selena
"if you kill the leader then their is a period of time where no creatures are reborn" Johanna
we spent the entire day inside the dungeon, which was undead centered. Lucy really had a field day with it, apparently liches have a racial ability that allows them to dominate weaker undead, this was the reason the church feared them so much, as undead were easily created in bulk. the last room contained one non-half lich, with about 9 highly ranked undead. i was kindly asked to stay out of this fight as i had already gotten to the point where i can evolve. Lucy tried to dominate the 9 undead, but couldn't due to the tight grip the other lich had on them. after killing about 4 of them the boss reanimated them, much to the glee of everyone as the minions provided a huge amount of xp. after killing them a total of about 30 times they stopped being reanimated, probably due to the lich controlling them running out of mp. they had a little bit of trouble with the boss lich as lich'es, like most undead, have great physical prowess. this one duel-wielded bastard swords. in short, while he was strong enough to wield them, his footwork was slopy and he had no coordination. he would alwase focus on one weapon while completely ignoring the other one. come on man, if you're going to do that just use one weapon. i trained for years to use two weapons simultaneously properly. ghost organized everyone in a rather simple, but effective, strategy. she turned into her wolf-furry form to tank and had everyone else hit the boss, hard. it was down to half health after 30 seconds, but they were all tiered after the consecutive fighting. fortunately Johanna had managed to cut of a limb or two, specifically his right arm and leg. making the rest of the fight easy as all he could do was cast a ball of energy every 30 seconds, which i assume is the amount of time it takes for him to recharge his mana. the fight ended with a longsword between the eye, oh yeah i forgot to mention that Johanna specializes in all types of swords, and i specialize in duel wielding, even weapons that were not intended to duel wield. although i refuse to wield two weapons that aren't of similar quality, it feels unbalanced and awkward.

"get anything good?" jack
"nah, just this crappy rusted sword that we dozens of already" Johanna
"shame, i was hoping for one of the rarer drops" jack
when we take a peaceful walk out of the dungeon, as we had already re killed all but one of the undead inside it, we are greeted by a setting sun and a barbeque. it was right then that the adrenaline wore off and everyone realized just how hungry they were, with a large growl coming from 5 stomachs. Johanna and i can go for 24 hours without eating without side effects and undead don't need to eat, they just like the sensation of eating.
"about time you got back" aunty
"they wouldn't let me help with litty" jack
"litty?" sally
"our pet name for that lich" uncle
"who wants a burger?" mr smith
"Where'd you get the meat. when i checked this morning we didn't have any, and i highly doubt any of the super markets are open" jack
"i went to hell and butchered a couple demon boars" mr smith
"oh yeah, that's right. high level demons can go to hell with minimal preparation" Johanna
"and I'm one of the highest" mr smith
"now, who wants some burgers?" George
as soon as he said this his wife Cathrin holds out her plate with a shy smile on her face.
after we ate the stakes from hell, everyone went through the showers, which were single person. then we all retired for the night, unfortunately everyone was exhausted and fell asleep almost immediately.
congratulations! you can evolve! chose one: wraith, shade
'if i remember correctly a wraith is insubstantial, a spiritual type demon. and a shade can go between physical and spiritual.' jack
'you are correct' Johanna
'shade' jack
congratulation! your pet/slave Lucy can evolve! chose one: greater half-lich
'well that doesn't leave much of a choice, greater half-lich' jack
congratulations! your pet/slave ghost can evolve! chose one: werewolf, lycan
'werewolves lack self control in their beast form, but lycans don't' Johanna
'i would probably just end up assaulting master every time i go into beast form then' ghost
'lycan' jack
congratulations! your pet/slave Johanna can evolve! chose one: wind nymph, air elemental
'i don't want to be an elemental' Johanna
'wind nymph it is then' jack
and then we drift off to sleep.

The Sun's Remnant
Two people are transported to a world with magic, but it is no Wonderland. When the god of light died, he decided to take the world with him. At least, that’s what many believe in the Kingdom of Rhine, a once vast kingdom of which only a small corner remains — and even that is threatened. On one side, by the Twisted Forest, a corruption spreading from the deathplace of the gods that has already swallowed up most of Rhine. On the other, by the resurgent Kagrathan Empire, resurrected by the infallible God-Emperor Karlatz. A holy order of knights carry out their mission despite the death of their god. A band of talented misfits prepare for a heist out of their league — by stealing. Mages hunt for secrets even as the world ends. A ruler does what must be done to save the living, no matter the cost. Into this world of magic and murder, two adrift souls are inexplicably dragged: a mother estranged from her young daughter due to her own mistakes, and a young man with a love of fantasy who has gradually drifted away from his friends and family. As they each struggle to find their place in this world, they must also answer the question: do they want one?***Content Warning: I've drafted about 100,000 words (most of the first volume), and there is no sexual content so far, though I may add it in the future. There is occasionally gore and traumatising content as the story demands. I commit to keeping all of the above non-voyeuristic. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

An age of death, destruction, and slaughtering of the innocent. In such a world, a cry of anguish can lead to a small hope, a cry of desperation can lead to a warm and loving embrace , and a cry of helplessness can lead to freedom. Will one man rise above all, or will he fail to stand up from the dirt from whence he came? We can only find out in the future, can't we? PS: This is my first fiction, so I would really appreciate some feedback, since I don't know if it is any good at all. Also, the creator of the cover is winRoot. If you want a good cover or something illustrated, he is a very good artist and will take commisions. I highly recommend him.

The Ratter
By gnawing through a dike, even a rat may drown a nation.-Edmund Burke There are three kinds of monsters that every rookie adventurer can be expected to face. The first is the goblin, the small green humanoids that often cause problems out on the frontier. The second is the slime, the sneaky ambush predator that likes to drop down from the ceiling and seems to be just about everywhere. And then, there's the giant rat, the plague of the sewer and the tavern cellar. But they're nothing but a petty annoyance, right? Right? Wrong. Giant rats multiply like wildfire and mature very quickly. Unlike rats, they can very quickly exceed their available food supply and start hunting for human flesh the moment that nothing else is available. A hungry swarm, unchecked, can eat a city alive. But not if The Ratter has anything to say about it.
