《Just For Fun》Chapter 41: Rolling rock and Detachable Nails

Mitchell looked around the room for a few minutes after sighing at the ridicules path she had walked through the darkness.
The room was completely circular and had just one entrance, the walls were covered in carvings and the roof was made up of two domes stacked on top of each other in a kind of snowman style.
Rising up in a circle around the center of the room were pillars that held the bottom edge of the second dome. The columns themselves were rope styled, the helixes that composed it were carved to look like snakes and at the bottom of each column the carvings stretched out away towards the walls where they ended with a snake head.
The middle dome had a hole in it that most likely lead to the surface but that wasn’t where Mitchell had entered the room, where Mitchell had entered was a quite a bit lower than that and was one of a few small holes that had come to exist in the flat space between where the first dome ended and the second one began.
The floor was, by itself a magnificent piece of architecture, using the grain of the marble from which it was made; lines were formed pointing inwards towards the raised dais. The golden color of the lines made it appear as if the very light was being pulled inwards ever inwards and a second set of lines, these made of darker lines made it seem as if all the darkness was rushing out the entrance and towards the corners.
The way this was possible was thanks to the width and amount of lines that were made, closer to the center the golden lines were more plentiful and barely had any space between them while at the walls it was like oil had been streaked over the ground...
Walking over to the walls Mitchell scans the carvings interested in what they could be, she was disappointed to find that they didn’t suggest what the reason for the room was, instead all they showed was scenes of people doing things... obviously it was a record of some sort... totally not Mitchell’s scene.
“I guess I’ll show Nebel this place later, he should be interested...” Mitchell returns to the control room and looks over the scores of buttons scattered across the panel. Finding one labelled map, she presses it and the screens switch to a three dimensional wire frame map of the area.
The map was incredibly detailed for such a map and even had the hole she had fallen through marked in red. Outside the domed chamber, at the end of the pathway, there was an intersection with ten tunnels leading in various directions.
Most of them were marked in red at one point along their paths and the word impassable was marked in blinking red, but there were four ones that led up to the surface that appeared to be fine.
Tracing along them, Mitchell noticed that one of them actually went all the way to the city and was marked as locked. Looking over the panel she eventually found a button that was labelled “Main Entrance Lock” and she pressed it but when the screens read “Scan thumb for authorization confirmation!” she gave up and went back to the map.
The other three paths weren’t blocked or locked but they each had their own problem, near the end of each, the surfaces of the walls, ceilings and floors became rough and she could see that they were natural caves. That wasn’t a problem, the problem was the blue dots inside the caves, that the legend labelled as “Unknown Life Forms”.

She wasn’t completely sure what that referred to but she had a guess and she was fairly certain it was right.
Leaving the lights on but setting the rest of the functions of the ruin? To stand by, Mitchell leaves the control room and heads off to check out the caves.

Alna had sent out the message only three hours before they reached him in a large crate marked “Don’t you dare drop this!” Scanning his thumb for the package, Alan asks the soldier handing it to him the obvious question “Whatever happened to “Dangerous Contains Explosives!”?”
The soldier closes his display after Alan’s thumb was verified and responds with a grin “Some general in the past thought it was funny and after the fourth or fifth idiot was blown up, package services got nearly perfect.”
Alan just stares at the man with his usual expression “So I guess they don’t drop anything anymore?”
The soldier scratches the back of his neck in embarrassment “yeah... pretty much... well bye!” he leaves rather quickly and Alan turns to Chris who was watching the exchange with a complicated expression.
“Take the explosives and line them up as per the plan.” Alan orders him.
“Sir yes sir.” Chris says and carries the explosives out of the tent towards the army engineers they had gathered a little while ago.
“Have the hole’s been dug?” he asks them.
One engineer, a young woman, answers him and takes the explosives too “Yeah their done, can I go ahead and set them up now? I don’t have much time before I leave for my next assignment...”
“Yeah sure...” Chris says and leaves the tent.
The girl straps the box to her back and runs out of the tent and towards the mountain... only idiots believed that old story about the delivery men, in reality explosives had been practically save since the creation of dynamite. These days explosives, were dangerous left out in the elements or upon receiving serious trauma, but a sealed container bouncing about a bit, wasn’t an issue.
Reaching the top of the pass in only an hour thanks to a elevator the engineers had rigged up on the largest cliff, the young woman reached the site of the first holes and laid the box on the ground so the explosives experts could do their thing.
Alan’s flunkies had gathered together most of the army engineers in his army but most of those as was the case with the young woman, had nothing to do with explosives... the only reason she brought the explosives personally was her boredom and her orders holding her there until the job was done.
The demolitionist went to work placing the explosives in rows all the way down half of the pile of debris, set the timers and wired the whole thing up to a button at the top of a hill beside the road in front of Alan’s tent.
Already knowing Alan’s personality pretty well, the engineers cleared everyone and thing out of the way before informing him that the job was done.
Which was a good job on their part, since the first thing the maniac did when they told him, was walk out of his tent, flick off the cover on the button for detonating the explosives and firmly press it in...

At the top of the pass the top line of explosives blew with a roar that was even audible all the way down at the bottom of the pass where the soldiers stood and watched, the stone fragments, dirt and debris from the pile was set flying and sliding down the mountain.
Slowly it gained speed until it was pulling boulders, buried cars, planes, trains and every other thing the humans of that world had buried in it along for the ride.
When the avalanche the engineers had been ordered to make stopped, the grade of the pile had visibly lowered and the next five lines only helped lower it even more until the pass had more of a wedge shaped pile in it instead of the tower of trash from before.
Seeing that the mission was a success, Alan orders men to bulldoze it to compact it so it wouldn’t shift and others to start making a barricade at the top, so the succubae roaming on the other side would be able to freely walk on through.
No longer needed, the engineers that had new orders left in a small caravan of military cars along with some soldiers that had similar orders...

Bo heard the explosions from waaaayyyy behind her and turned to see what had happened, the Latino giant did the same and they were awarded with the sight of the north side also slowly rolling down.
They were interested for a bit and even sat down to watch but Bö quickly grew bored once the explosions had finished and the avalanche had lost most of its speed.
Once more back to how they were, the duo moves towards the first of the mining sites and spots some figures in the distance. Knowing that there were creatures here that no one had seen before, bo was eager to be the first one to study them so while sitting with her legs on both sides of his neck she said “Giddy up” and lightly kicked her heels into his chest.
Laughing a little, “Bubbles” walks closer to the figures and throws a small stone towards the first one he noticed that was alone. The rock hit it on the head and the figure, that had been walking spread black wings and flew swiftly their way.
Readying her fake staff as if it was a real one, Bö flicks it dramatically and frost starts appearing in a line towards, what was in fact an incubus as she could now see. Instead of being hit by the pocket of cold air and receiving a heart attack from the immediate temperature change as she had expected.
The incubus raised its hand and a pocket of air started flying to intercept hers, the air pocket had small optical distortions in it that bo figure was signs of heat. The pockets clashed together, dispersed and the incubus reached them in the time it took for “Bubbles” to say “huh...”
Bo started using walls of earth to try and obstruct it, while the giant tried swatting it out of the air but the incubus dodged it all and flicked its claws towards them.
Bo felt something strange and looked down at her body to see a claw stuck into a reddish mosaic on her left shoulder; attempting to raise her arm she noticed that she couldn’t move it... “...Am I hurt...?” she asks out loud, because she felt no pain but “Bubbles” doesn’t hear her as he’s a little occupied, pulling the wings off of the incubus as if he was a bad little boy killing a fly. And all she can do is pull it out with her other hand.
Tossing it away Bö starts thinking about Nebel, a boy in her class and a few other people... “Ehhh...Why am I thinking about them? I should be treating my wound!” she thinks but then her thoughts return to the previous ones...
Her body starts to feel warm and her thoughts get feverish, her chest starts to ache with hunger? And she feels something bothering her... down there... grabbing her flat chest with her hands she moans and trembles with thoughts of co-ed swim class, her hands start to move downwards and start caressing her stomach, she leans backwards and starts to fall off of “Bubbles” back making him finally notice what was happening on his neck...
Grabbing her hands, he slaps a pair of hand cuffs on her he always had on him, before tying her up with some rope and while dragging the incubus with him, runs towards the pass.
Upon reaching the pass, “Bubbles” sees some soldiers he recognizes and dashes over to them “HEY I NEED SOME HELP!” he says surprising them since they had never heard him talk.
Leading him to a medical tent that had been set up at the other side of the pass, he places Bö on a bed inside and shows the barely living, horribly mutilated incubus to one of the field doctors.
The doctor flinches at the sight of a live monstrous demi-human but soon gets over his fright when he notices the stumps where it’s wings used to be and the bruising covering it’s whole body expect for the arm that “Bubbles” had dragged it by...
Nodding to himself the doctor picks up a bottle of medicine and after informing Bö’s friend that it was just a tranquilizer, injects some into her. She soon passes out and they untie her so she can rest comfortably.
“Succubae poisoning.” The doctor tells “Bubbles” “It should pass out of her system in a few hours but until then she would have been like a dog in heat.”
The doctor points at the incubus “Can you go lock that thing in a cage for me? It would make a great test subject...”
The giant obliges and locks it up before sitting down beside Bö’s bed and pulling out a book to read.
well here's what Alan does with the explosives, pretty basic stuff.
mitchell doesnt do much this chap, its just descriptions of a ruin and alan does his thing.
I think bo's first incubus hunt will be the part most reflect on positive or negative but maybe the ruin will also perk peoples interest or.. even the demolition is pretty interesting i guess
tell me what you think! it helps me improve!
thanks for the thanks, thanks for the follows, favorites and reviews!

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
