《Just For Fun》Chapter 21: Three professors of a strange school

Nebel appears with a lightning strike! No seriously when Nebel reaches out and touches the rock sitting in the CAIFELIT corner of his virtual space, his vision turns into streaks and he appears high in the air above the forest.
His vision once more turns into streaks and the next he knows he’s kneeling on his left knee with burn marks surrounding him and the soldiers that had been assigned to watch the passes entrance staring in shock.
After a moment, one of the soldiers walks over to him, obviously still nervous. “Sir Nebel, I was told to give you this.” The soldier hands him a letter and then quickly retreats.
Nebel hadn’t really noticed the soldiers before but other than them looking really scared of him at the moment, they looked really cool. They had hard shelled chest armor covering their torsos and under that he could see that they were wearing long coat like, body armor. They had long gloves reaching halfway up their upper arms and the gap between the two had cloth covering their skin.
Their legs were covered by bullet proof pants and their feet had black metal plated across them. Finally their heads had motorcycle helmets on them that covered their whole heads.
Nebel shrugs off his oversight and looks down at the letter in his hands. The envelope was just paper but he took note of the twenty swords pointed inwards inlayed on the emblem before breaking it and pulling out the letter contained within.
To the Hero of the Northern Pass the Alien Hero Nebel,
The Council bestows upon you and your party, at the time of the mission,
Three free beginner classes,
Two free intermediate classes,
One free advanced Class
Each
The order to bring your trap, to your academy for study has been issued.
The Council has also deemed it to inform you that the fire created by one pyro of the plains, alien hero Synthia has been calculated to last five more days due to the nature of goblin skin.
Please visit the adventurer’s office for more orders after you visit the academy.
Inform your party of the classes.
Nebel smiles at the unexpected reward, deactivates and stores the trap in his backpack before he says good bye to the soldiers before heading down the path towards the plains, in the forest he sees no signs of any goblins at all, he doesn’t even hear any of the usual goblin shouts as he runs down the path.
“They must have already been wiped out.” He thinks as he quickly makes his way to the other side of the forest and the beginning of the plains.
He turns around after leaving the forest and briefly looks at the rising column of smoke coming from the mountains before turning and starting on the moon run to the academy due south of his position.
Along the way he notices much more human occupation than ever before, trucks floating across the ground carrying supplies and soldiers are no longer the only sight to see, now he could see travelling salesmen, whores and other groups of people regularly found around armies accompanying them.
He could also see some people with logging equipment setting up a work site and some people building some houses, It seemed the humans of this world fear of imminent death was no longer as large and they were slowly returning to a normal life.
As he arrives at the academy he sees a lot more people entering then the last time he had come, it seemed most players were coming for their next lesson.

Nebel walks through the arch and continues down the path before realizing he had no idea where he should bring the trap to… Luckily he knew someone that worked there.
“Hi Rosa, it’s Nebel are you at work?”
A happy, bubbly feminine voice comes through the intangible line “Oh high Nebel! I heard about your exploits! Ya I’m at work, why?”
“I was told to drop something off but I have no idea where to leave it, any ideas?”
She stays silent for a moment before answering “Well there’s the director’s office but I heard she’s at the laboratory with the head researcher right now. So why don’t you go there? It’s where you first appeared, I can’t leave my post right now or I would go with you, call me if you need anything” she pauses for a moment more “…anything…”
“Ok, thanks Rosa, I will see you a bit later. Bye!” Nebel finishes the call and starts moon running to the laboratory, he wanted to finish this job as soon as possible so he could start learning somemore.
At the strange labyrinthine he wanders around for a bit before just deciding to jump the walls straight to the center, odd he could have sworn the main path went straight to the center before…
Well he gets to the center and there he finds the eccentric guy from when he appeared talking to the old sorceress from the council. The man turns when Nebel lands softly on the wall surround the area.
“Oh there you are! We been waiting here for you since the soldiers reported your appearance.” The man chuckles a bit before continuing “Appearing as lightning, pretty slick, someone else formed from water a while ago but yours is certainly flashier!”
“Oh stop being an idiot Steven and get moving.” The woman says kicking the eccentric man apparently named Steven in the butt. “Sorry about that Nebel, he’s a super genius but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t act like a fool.” She bows her head towards Nebel. “I wasn’t introduced to you before, I’m the Marcella the wise, head of the academies, director of this one and the only one crazy enough to give this guy a job…”
“Ahh nice to make your acquaintance and don’t worry about it, I already know a bunch of people like him.” Nebel replies to her greeting while shrugging and handing over his backpack to the afore mentioned fool.
“Let’s see what’s going on here!” Steven yells out loud after placing the stones still in their deactivated positions into the machine at the center of the laboratory. He flicks a switch and the light from the sun streaming into the open air laboratory actually dims. Symbols appear above each of the stones and lines trace between two groups of them.
“Ohhhh!” the mad man yells when the lights appear and Marcella looks at the stones in wonder before explaining the lights to Nebel “The Symbols above each rock is the effect of the rock and that’s normally all she wrote but it seems you have made a type of enchantment we have never seen before.”
Nebel looks closer at the symbols and sees that there are actually three different symbols above his rocks, the largest amount is an arrow pointing towards the west, there is also a large group pointing down at itself but the one they were interested in were just two stones without arrows.
These two have a funnel shape hovering over them and the lines connecting them to the others are actually arrows. The funnel itself was a really flat one and all of the arrows attached to the bottom of it.

“The funnel shape must mean the gathering of something.” Marcella says and Steven tells them the rest. “This is why your trap worked! Those two stones are bending sunlight with small vectors, making the light of a twenty meter area collect on your stones, this is utterly amazing.”
Steven runs over to Nebel and grabs his hand and starts shaking them. “You have just revolutionized magic! Tell me what did you image while making the stones?”
“Well, I was imagining light being gathered and a force being sent out to the west when I was making the first group and with the second group I imagined the same but with a force going down.”
Steven let’s go of his hands and signs “That won’t help me…” Steven is one moment in front of them and the next he’s sulking in the corner to their left.
Marcella shakes her head and tells Nebel “That’s the basic image for a solar powered force stone, it shouldn’t have that kind of effect.”
They sit in silence for a moment before Steven is once more in front of them, holding a light bulb over his own head. The light bulb turns on… “Tell me, did you just say “group?”.”
“Yes I made them in a group; I kept the image in my head as I made the whole group by staring at them all.”
“There! That’s why it worked! Hmm this will be hard to use on a large scale…” Steven rushes away after his yureka moment before running to a board and writing calculation for… nothing it was all gibberish, seriously it had pie as 4.20 and the whole thing apparently equaled explosion...
“It seems that he means that because you imagined it as a group the permanent spell was actually specialized for each of those stones permanent spell to work together. They won’t work apart, this is the first time a permanent spell like this one has been made.” Marcella smiles at Nebel and congratulates him “Keep up the good work, arch magus Nebel. I look forward to your next creation I hope this time it’s on purpose.” She stands still for a moment “Man you just keep getting more titles, how about a bet?”
Nebel thinks about it for a moment, he decided he was sure she wasn’t going to make him do anything crazy. “Ok, sure.”
“Make another unique permanent spell and I’ll give you some special glasses of my own design.” She grins “If you can’t I’ll make you go through a week as Steven’s assistant.”
Nebel smiles and shakes her hand “Deal.”
The smile fades from her face “Willow, his last assistant, just had a mental breakdown and is currently on anti depressants.”
Nebel smiles wider “I’ve already got an idea, so don’t worry.”
Nebel leaves the trap in their care, since they told him they wanted to run some tests before running off to sign himself up for his first class of the day: Heat magic.
He returns to the entrance of the academy and there he notices that the display has a scanner in the shape of a whole. The only reason he realized it was because it was labeled scanner. He decides to throw caution to the wind and sticks his right hand in the hole… nothing happens… he switches hands and this time it works, when his display module enters the hole the screen changes to a new welcome screen and offers him only three choices.

Nebel chooses the Beginner choice, the heat magic one and sees a name he didn’t expect on the list, he decides to choose that professor and finalizes the arrangement before heading off to the library.
At the library he walks up to the counter. “Hi Rosa, how are you?”
Rosa who had already been looking towards the door with a smile when he came in says to him “Hi Nebel, I’m good! How are you?”
Nebel smiles at her “Pretty good, I just survived a pretty hairy skirmish and I have a little while before I go back to the front lines.”
She smiles to Nebel and leans on the desk towards him. “I heard about that very impressive! I would love to pick your brain about it over a cup of coffee, do you have time?”
Nebel notices her fairly deep cleavage down the neck of her shirt, which was unbuttoned pretty far down and quickly looks back up at her face to see a wide smile “Ya a bit after my class, how about then?”
Rosa lifts her hand off of the counter and touches her lip after a few seconds she lets her hand drop back down onto her chest just above her breasts and answers in the affirmative “Ok, that sounds good…so should we get started?”
“Yeah I’m ready.” Nebel says and smirks “Where is my class going to be?”
“Right here!” Rosa says while putting on a pair of glasses and pulling out a book.
Nebel lays his bag and spear down on the ground beside him and leans towards Rosa to make sure he hears every word.
“I’m sure you know the basic way to use magic so I’ll skip that.” Rosa says and lays her hand on Nebel’s.
“If you know the true form of fire magic I’m sure you’ll be able to use it better than anyone else. Fire Magic is actually a mixture of gas manipulation magic and heat creation or manipulation magic, today I’m only permitted to teach you one type of magic so I’m going to teach you Heat magic.”
She opens the book and turns a few pages before stopping and started to pretend to read from it, nebel could see from two pieces of evidence that she wasn’t really reading. Her eyes weren’t moving from his face and the book, which was labeled “fire and ice magic in modern times”, had the author labeled as “Rosa Thistle”.
“Heat is known to be energy but most people wouldn’t be able to tell you what form of energy it is. Heat is produced when energy is released in an undirected fashion from a material. The molecules of the material vibrate creating radiation that is then known as heat, this consumes the material. If another material comes into contact with a material producing or containing heat, the heat starts to equalize by passing over to the material with less heat. Heated materials, if they reach a certain level of heat start to be consumed and produce heat.”
She closes the book and places a piece of blank paper on the table. “That should be enough to work by! Why don’t you try it out on this piece of paper?”
Nebel using the mental tricks he had learned with vectors stares at the piece of paper… it bursts into flame and Rosa points at it, the flame goes out. “Oh! so great! Your making me so hot!”
Nebel who was thinking about a trap he could make with this was a bit confused by the last comment “What, did I accidentally direct it at you?” Seeing her expression which says “Really!” he figures out what she meant. “Oh whoops…really?”
She nods relieved “Yeah, I love smart guys… I was worried you were like Steven for a moment there…”
“Don’t worry; I’m not like him, how about we go for that coffee now?” Nebel putts his hand on hers now. “We can go to that one close to the adventurer’s office.”
She smiles “Ok, I’ll just go get one of our interns to watch the counter.” Rosa pulls away from the counter and walks through a door behind the counter.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above.
