《Just For Fun》Chapter 17: Don't give a pyro what she wants.

Dusk fell and the world slowly changed the colors lost their vibrancy as the sky gained its own special coloring for a few fleeting minutes. The colors receded and the world grew still… night had fallen.
But Nebel and his group had already disabled his trap by that time and were already more than half the way to their destination… the smallest point of the pass.
They had been walking for a few minutes already but so far they hadn’t encountered any goblins. Which was good since Nebel was pretty sure they would be able to handle too many groups of them before getting into position.
“Argg, I thought to soon...” Nebel thinks “Well at least I didn’t speak too soon…”
Waiting just about a minutes’ walk away, right where they were heading to, the passes choke point, was a group of goblins that only a moment ago had been heading this way. They were now stationary; obviously they were forming up in preparation for the fight to come.
“Ok everyone; let’s do this just as we planned!” Nebel shouts so everyone hears him when they are nearly within striking range.
The goblins hadn’t moved from their location but they had readied their shields and lifted their spears. Nebel runs forwards together with Luke and three others including the war hammer user.
“Let’s do this!” Nebel smacks away a spear and jumps to one side and the others copy his feat, the goblins from the back row spill backwards from the force and take their time getting back into the formation. “Now!”
Luke and the war hammer user shoulder their weapons and get ready to swing, a few meters away, Synthia, Bö and Maria casts their magic’s all at once. A fire ball flies from Maria’s hands and hits one of the goblins shields head on, while two other shields quickly heat up on their own.
As per his instructions the two ice mage’s release frigid blasts of cold towards the goblins and Bö switches to cooling. Luke and the war hammer user swing their weapons.
CLANG! The shield vibrate and then Crrrkkk! They shatter. Rapid heating and cooling of metal is used to harden it but a certain fact is usual forgotten, the harder the metal gets the less flexability it has and the brittle it gets. The group is small and the goblins quickly lose all of their shields and Nebel switches to part two of his battle plan.
Maria sits down with the other mages to recover from the effects of mental strain, while the rest of them charge the now shield less goblins. Nebel runs over to the goblin closest to the drop off and slashes it across its left shoulder. The straps holding its armor on are severed, which then folds off of its body to its right.

Nebel watches the surprise flash onto its cruel features just as its armor drags it off of the cliff. He then turns to the shivering goblins that had finally gotten up from his last attack, he swiftly disembowels the two goblins before running behind the goblins lines and with a single running stroke he cuts five goblins Achilles heel bringing them to their knees and taking the remaining spears out of the fight.
The others bring the rest of the armored goblins to heel as Nebel cuts the throat of two goblins with a horizontal slash. Nebel grabs the scruffs of two of the last three goblins he was fighting, spins on his heel and tosses them off the cliff, spinning back towards the last goblin he grabs his spear that he had thrown into the air and slashes straight down the last goblin. It reels back bloody and defeated and Nebel turns away from it to kill the ones he had crippled before.
After they stab the last few goblins to death the group, cuts their ears off, strips their gear and drops them off of the cliff. Nebel then grabs the bags of goblin weapons they had collected from the trap slaughtered goblins and starts standing them up against the last goblins armor. Ten minutes later, with a bit of physical labor and fire magic, the spike wall is ready and the team drops to the ground behind it, readying themselves for the next group.
“Well that went pretty well, didn’t it?” Nebel says smiling to the rest of the group, Maria just glares through her headache at him.
“That was pushing it quite close Nebel, if we had even slightly less power we would have run out.” Synthia says messaging her temples “What was the plan if the shields didn’t break?”
“Oh I was going to have Bö start an avalanche.” Nebel tells her.
Maximus starts laughing “Man and you call me crazy, you do realize we all would be caught in it right?”
Maya pops up from behind a rock a few meters away from everyone “I support Nebel.” Everyone turns and looks at her… she hides once more.
Bö jumps forwards to defend her brother “Don’t worry everyone! I would have covered us with a rock wall first!”
Synthia still with her fingers on her temples look at the two siblings “Why didn’t we just have Bö make a moving wall and push the goblins off?” She takes her right hand off of her head and makes a swatting motion.
“It doesn’t work that way! Bö show them.” Nebel replies before standing up, while Bö gestures towards him. A wall forms beside him and with a second gesture flies at him… and melts around as if it wasn’t there…
“Earth manipulation magic turns it into a liquid like form while it moves so it can only cause damage when it stops.” Nebel explains to them. “Even an avalanche would only cause damage if the rocks once falling, were no longer being manipulated.”

The group rest for a while before standing watch at their barricade, for a while nothing happens but then the group sees goblins in the distance, it was a group similar to the ones before but this time it neither attacked them nor formed up. Instead it retreated back down the path and thirty minutes later they heard the loud crashing of tons of small feet walking towards them. Everyone grabs a spear and they all wait for the enemy…
A few hours later the goblins finally retreat and the group sinks to the ground to rest. The goblins had mostly just run at them like mindless animals but a few of them had thrown knives or rocks. The real problem had been the sheer numbers, the goblins had attacked in an immense wave that the group had barely been able to hold back they had stabbed and stabbed until their spears were buried deep in goblins completely stuck and weighed down, luckily they each had three extra spears already laid out for them… they last for two hours more… they were forced to pull their individual weapons out and fight in close combat. Bö made small walls which forced the goblins to follow specific paths, taking away any possibility of them ganging up on Nebel and the rest of them. It she hadn’t thought so far along they would have surely been overwhelmed, as it was it took an hour more before the bodies had piled so high that it was now difficult to even get to the barricade from the goblins side without falling from the path and the goblins finally retreated.
When everyone had gotten some rest, Nebel set a watch and waited for dawn. When it was just around the corner Nebel gave the order to retreat to the forest. “Synthia light them up! It should give us some time to set the trap up.”
Synthia grinning ear to ear runs past everyone, as they move out on the retreat, to go make the biggest bon fire she had made in her life so far! The rest of them shoulder their equipment and start the jog back to the forest.
A few dozen meters after the first turn on the Cliffside Nbel looks back and sees the light of flames lighting up the path at the turn and he hears maniacal laugher accompany it.
AHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAHHAAAA!!!!! (Synthia)
When they reach the beginning of the path Nebel once more places the activation rocks into the ready position and the spears in their holes and then they wait for Synthia. Who arrives, ten minutes later with only a bikini and a few scraps of her clothes remaining, the rest of it was burnt away and she even had first degree burns with a few second degree one covering her body… but she had a large grin on her face so no one said anything about the fire until after Mitchell had done some basic healing.
“How’s the fire doing?” Nebel asks her.
“Great, awesome, beautiful.” she yells
Nebel chuckles a bit but still slightly annoyed “Actually I was referring to it still being lit or not…”
“Oh it’s lit, just look!” Synthia points at the sky and everyone looks up at the predawn sky to see a huge column of smoke reaching up from the center of the pass.
“Hmm, I guess that was a little overkill, huh?” Nebel mutters
“That’s going to burn for a while.” Maria says with her mouth hanging open.
Bö looks around at everyone “Hey should everyone be doing something?” everyone looks over at Bö. “you guys have to go back to your posts.” She points at Synthia and Maximus. “Nebel has to go report in and then go to university along with Mitchell and Luke and Bö have to go to school!”
Everyone finally realized what she meant and looked at their clocks, real and game. She was right… Synthia… who was unemployed but held up by the state just stood there and salivated over her handiwork but everyone else started hurrying about. Nebel called the council and got his next orders which he would have to leave hanging for a few hours, Mitchell and Luke finished storing the loot in the crack and got Bö to seal it and nearly everyone either ran off or yelled THIAF.
Maximus waved said “Adios” and left towards the east and one of the two soldiers that had been guarding the paths entrance left to bring their reliefs from the forest’s entrance.
“Come one guys.” Time to go. “THIAF” Mitchell, Luke, Nebel and Bö say all together.
After they vanish, the forgotten Maya comes out from behind a log and Maria starts laughing...
“Where did everyone go?” Maya asks
“Hey sis, that very amateur stalker of you they said it pretty clearly they went to school, now get your cute butt in gear and stalker them in reality.” Maria says jokingly to her sister.
“THIAF.” They both say.
