《Einherjar》B2 Chapter 16- Triumphant return

“I suppose I should say welcome back, but I don’t want you here.” Arthur said with narrowed eyes as he looked at the suited man seated across from him.
“And I suppose I should say it’s good to be back, but with you around, it really isn’t.” Shaun Fife, Guild Master of America, responded with nary a break in the conversation flow, taking a swig of his drink of choice on the table.
Drink of choice for the day was apparently vodka instead of the whiskey the man normally drank, the man downing his shot before taking a deep breath.
“Doesn’t that burn?” Arthur asked, quite liking the drink himself and knowing what breathing after a shot felt like.
“I like it, that’s why I do it. Feels like I’m breathing clean air after all the shit that went down.” Shaun said with a sigh, feeling like he had aged a few years in the past four months.
“I can’t even guess, but from what I know to be very likely… you met the Adventurer Killer while you were in Columbia, didn’t you?” Arthur asked with a pointed look, the Guild Master suddenly snapping his gaze from his next shot to Arthur, a glare in his eyes.
“How did you… no, Dante mentioned that one of the Demon Lords had an unexplained killer, and that you were guessing it to be that person.” Shaun said, taking his next shot before reaching for Arthur’s untouched glass and downing it too.
Arthur could appreciate alcohol, but time, place, occasion said that he shouldn’t drink, and that Shaun needed it unlike Arthur.
“I don’t know how you came to the conclusion that guy was in Columbia, but yes, he was, and yes, we encountered one another. It was a dangerous fight, I nearly died, he was better off than me, but had to escape.” Shaun said with a frown, annoyed at his loss…
It was understandable though, Shaun might have had a level of one hundred and one when the fight was fought, but the Adventurer Killer was level one hundred and twelve, and that was about a month ago.
Now Shaun was level one hundred and six, and Arthur sitting in front of him had a level of one hundred and ten himself… Shaun doubted that Mourn slowed down in his levelling, meaning that Mourn was likely an even higher level by now.
Just great…
“I see. And you won’t tell me the details because of… what was it again, operational security, right?” Arthur pointed out, giving Shaun an excuse to not talk about his harrowing experience in Columbia.
“Yeah. It was a shit show, it was horrible, and it made me really question a few things that I didn’t want to, but it’s over, for now. Columbia is stabilized to some extent…” Shaun’s frown let Arthur know exactly what the man was thinking, frowning along with the Guild Master.
“But you couldn’t capture Mourn, who was the most dangerous person in the country at the time, and that bothers you.” Arthur pointed out with a frown of his own while Shaun poured drinks.
His bottle was almost done by the way, and Shaun was apparently barely feeling it.
“Of course it bothers me! Mourn was right there and I couldn’t finish the job because… because…” Arthur watched as Shaun went quickly from rage to confusion and a bit of sadness, wondering how that felt.
Arthur always considered himself a bit dull emotionally, and swapping from extremes on the emotional spectrum was a bit too much for him, at best it took a lot to get him to feel strongly about anything except his interests.

Most of the time he was stuck in apathy, even if he knew what he should be feeling and what was morally right, it didn’t mean that he aligned with such things in his mind… just that he was a good actor most of the time.
“…I’ll leave you alone for now. The eleventh Demon Lord has been claimed by Sheikh, so Valhalla is going to be fighting on the ninth floor of Area eleven.” Arthur informed Shaun, standing up and leaving the Guild Master with his thoughts, slumped back into his chair as he was.
It was a few minutes of looking up at the ceiling in thought, before Shaun opened his mouth.
“…Mourn escaped because I didn’t understand my prey. I assumed he was a playful, charismatic monster, and just let that be the sole thing I thought of him.” Shaun confirmed to himself, no one else in the room to hear his epiphany as he sat up properly in his seat.
“…I’m a bit compromised in regards to wanting to fight Mourn, aren’t I?” No one answered, but Shaun knew exactly what a certain person would tell him.
“’No shit monster’… surprised to say I might actually miss that crazy Seer after those months.” Shaun said, standing up from his seat, looking at the bottle of vodka, empty as he held it, and then tossed it into a nearby bin.
Maybe he should quit that.
Shaun left his room, looking to see Valhalla entering the Dungeon room, Grey appearing easily by his side as soon as no member of Valhalla could see him.
Right, he had forgotten that, Grey really didn’t want the members of Valhalla to know he worked for Shaun because of some asinine reason involving his old friendship with half of Einherjar.
Thinking of Einherjar as part of Valhalla was easy for the mythology buff that Shaun was.
“Boss, something wrong?” Shaun looked to Grey and just staring at the agent for a few moments before sighing.
“Hey, what did I do?” Grey shouted in offence, leaving Shaun to shake his head as he walked away, hiding his smirk at getting under Grey’s skin with just a look and sigh.
“You exist.” The way Shaun said it was enough for Grey to know it was a joke even if he was just giving a stale stare at Shaun’s head for his words, following Shaun out of the building.
“Okay, in all seriousness, what’s going on?” Grey asked, getting into the passenger seat of Shaun’s Ford GT after seeing Shaun gesture for him to get in.
“Nothing, I just feel like eating some fast food and relaxing for a bit. I’ve been stressed out for a while and I realize that isn’t exactly healthy.” Hey, Shaun had wanted to help rehabilitate veterans suffering from PTSD, whether they knew they had the problem or not…
Shaun went to quite a few of those meetings, eventually stopping because they reminded him of alcoholics anonymous meetings, and he didn’t want to go to anything like that.
Regardless of his problems, Shaun knew enough to know that he really needed to calm down, so taking the least missed Guild worker, and leaving the Guild to Ellie and Dante, Shaun decided to take a day off.
So, pulling up to a fast food chain with a certain colonel on the face of it, and ordering quite a bit of chicken, Shaun and Grey just sat, relaxing as they watched people walk by on the sidewalk, eating.
“…I wish I could have helped in Columbia.” Grey finally said after wiping his mouth with one of the napkins, getting Shaun to pause in his eating.

“…You helped us more going around looking for spies. Thanks for that by the way, I know going overseas wasn’t exactly part of the job description.” Shaun said, sighing as he leaned back in his seat, knowing that eating while this conversation was going would be a bit wrong.
“Eh, someone needed to do it, and I suppose I was the guy you picked… but you better be alright. Sera would be sad if you weren’t.” Grey pointed out and Shaun chuckled.
“That she would… I’m glad she found you back then. If she hadn’t, well…” Shaun didn’t need to continue the sentence, Grey knew exactly how his life would have ended up had Sera not tore into him about his bad habits and dumped Oliver with him.
Grey would have probably been in the wrong crowd, and fighting against Shaun, a terrifying prospect, if Grey wouldn’t be dead already.
“I’d be living a very different life. Actually thinking about it… What happened to him?” Grey thought about something for a moment, getting a raised eyebrow from Shaun who was unaware of whom Grey was talking about.
“Who is ‘him’?” Asked Shaun, wondering who got such a confused look from Grey who looked to Shaun after a moment.
“Arthur’s older brother, Eddie.” Shaun blinked at that, slowly turning to Grey, staring at the confused Guild worker.
“…Did you just say that he has an older brother?”
Meanwhile, in a warehouse towards the south of Manhattan, Eddie sneezed, shaking his head in confusion wondering why he’d be sneezing.
“Hey Eddie, you alright?” Eddie sniffled for a moment, making sure that it wasn’t one of those disgusting wet sneezes before he nodded at Kyle, their teleporter.
“Yeah I’m fine… maybe it’s that old superstition of someone talking about you?” Eddie guessed with a shrug, the teleporter narrowing his eyes at Eddie before shaking his head and walking away, leaving Eddie confused about why… until he felt a sharp point digging into his spine.
“Oh, who’d be talking about you exactly? Anyone I need to know about?” the feminine voice sent shivers down Eddie’s spine that he did not need right now, stepping away from the knife and turning to face Laura, the woman who tried to kill Mourn back in Columbia.
“No, I don’t know who would be talking about me.” Eddie said, carefully raising his hands defensively, getting a glare from the woman before she twirled her knife, the weapon vanishing as she poked him in the chest.
“I’ll believe you. Come on, the boss wants to talk with you.” Eddie winced at Laura’s words, following her with trepidation…
After Columbia, Mourn was… different. Rather, Mourn reminded Eddie of how Mourn talked and acted before realizing that being open would get Eddie’s trust easier.
Basically-
“Ah, there you are! Come on, come in to my humble abode!” Mourn said, gesturing grandly to his meeting room…
The unsaid words rattled around in Eddie’s head even as he stepped inside…
‘So said the spider to the fly’
Walking inside with Laura, it didn’t even surprise Eddie to see Kyle sitting there even though he had walked away from Eddie earlier…
The teleporter notably stayed away from Laura, afraid of the femme fatale though, well aware that he was the weakest person in the room.
Other than Kyle, Eddie, Laura and Mourn, there were also two other people, making up the group Mourn went dungeon diving with.
The first, surprisingly, was ‘Doc Cheshire’ as he was called by Mourn, the psychiatrist having been brought along to Columbia to Eddie’s surprise, the man was extremely useful there, once they found out he was a Contractor like the rest of them, even if he was low level.
While the man had originally been kidnapped by Mourn and their group, the man eventually began to express interest in Mourn himself, and following the serial killer…
By now, the Doc was loyal to Mourn, and Mourn alone, looking very disturbed and creepy when he thought no one was watching… honestly, the doctor seemed a bit mentally unstable himself…
Maybe it was a result of Stockholm Syndrome and Mourn’s questionable actions to justify himself to their followers…
The sixth person in the group was recruited in Columbia much like Laura was, the man didn’t say his name, nor did he talk much, only carrying around a common woodcutting axe, which was actually his Anima, and wearing a medical mask.
Said medical mask was black instead of the common white/blue though, and the man always began to chuckle quite loudly whenever he killed something, admiring Mourn’s skill at killing, he searched for Mourn only to work for him.
So the man, dubbed ‘Axe’ by Mourn, was the muscle of their group, even if unfortunately…
Well, with his inclusion, their group of six was complete, and Eddie wasn’t really much of a gamer, but he was aware that a healer and a blocker were usually required for a group?
The Doc had a healing Skill, so he was a healer, but the man certainly didn’t act like one, and this Axe guy had the Endurance and Strength to be a blocker even though he attacked more than he took blows.
All six members of the team, dubbed ‘Wonderland’ by Mourn, were attackers, violent people, who worked separately in the Dungeon despite moving together.
Eddie was well aware it was a messed up group, but damn if Mourn didn’t make it work.
So, after the five members of the team sat, leaving Mourn to sit astride his chair, leaning his chin on the back of his chair as he looked at all of them, the Saw-Blade appearing in his hand as he spun it along his hand.
There was silence, no one daring to talk without being spoken to, the fear of Mourn present in everyone in the room, even the Axe guy who seemed to fear nothing else.
“So… let’s talk. We’ve been back in America for the last two weeks, let’s talk.” Mourn said, the calm tone in his voice a warning… he was angry.
“…” No one dared to speak, whoever spoke would draw the attention of the violent being that Mourn currently was, and Mourn looked at all of them, dropping and vanishing his weapon as he laced his fingers behind his head, pressing his head down as the sound of Mourn taking a deep breath was heard.
“So no one? No one wants to talk about what a fuck up Columbia was!” Mourn roared, standing and kicking his chair sailing through the air, it only having missed Kyle by a few centimetres as it crashed against the wall, definitely broken after the impact.
No one moved, no one dared flinch at Mourn’s anger, not wanting it directed at them.
“We were so close! We had everything! If it weren’t for that bastard Shaun Fife, we would have had an entire country to work from!” Mourn roared, and Eddie finally moved, looking down at the table for a moment before turning his chair to look at Mourn.
“Boss. That would have been a bad thing.” Eddie said, a blade resting a centimetre from his eyeball, drawing a cold sweat from the second-in-command.
“Eddie, Eddie, Eddie… please, explain how holding control of an entire fucking country would have been a bad thing?” Mourn asked, his anger palpable as the blade shook slightly, luckily not hitting Eddie…
He doubted he could regenerate an eyeball… maybe Laura could, but not him.
“Boss, your end goal is the death of America’s upper echelon and possibly the destruction of the government as well, right?” Eddie asked, the blade being removed when Mourn spun, raising his hands to the air, blade in hand.
“Of course it is! I hate this damn country! I want it to burn…” Mourn said, staring at Eddie with his silver eyes flashing slightly.
“But if you were in Columbia, controlling the whole country, you would have become too big to fight the way you best know how.” Eddie pointed out, watching Mourn’s frown swap into a neutral look, Mourn almost looking like a walking corpse as he spoke.
“…Go on…” Mourn allowed Eddie to continue, even though Eddie knew that everything he was saying was not what Mourn wanted to hear…
But it was what he needed to hear.
“Boss, we’re not exactly military, nor do we know how to run a country between us. We know how to stay undetected, and fight, sell drugs, move it around, but we can’t wage war as a country, it makes us too big of a target to America.” Eddie pointed out…
He recalled his younger brother discussing this with him long ago.
Even if his younger brother scared him, Eddie also cared for Arthur.
“And then they’d be able to get rid of us with things like nukes and whatever other missiles they want to send… but by being in the country, in populated areas…” Mourn realized what Eddie was saying, letting Eddie relax marginally.
“They can’t target us without targeting civilians too, plus they don’t actually know where we are.” Eddie added on, getting Mourn to relax as he looked to the broken remains of his chair before shrugging, deciding to just stay standing.
“Okay, okay, point in favour of what happened, still, we ended up needing to flee the country, and while our recruits mostly escaped, it’s annoying.” That was putting it lightly, Eddie was well aware that Mourn wasn’t actually mad about ‘losing a country’…
No, Mourn was mad about what happened in conjunction with losing the country.
“Or it could be a good thing?” Laura spoke out, drawing Mourn’s eyes as he looked to the woman with a raised brow, wondering what she had to contribute to the discussion.
“We all had to flee, but we haven’t exactly fled to the same locations did we? Our followers are all around now, maybe some would turn traitor, but a large amount are loyal to you for what you did for us.” Laura included, even if she was first against Mourn, by now she followed him out of her own will… even if she was a bit sceptical of his ‘newfound’ anger.
“And when we fled, you made sure that a chef would be with every group that fled, and we can grow the materials required here, with a bit of help from Axe here.” Doc Cheshire pointed out, gesturing to the Axe wielder who grunted.
Surprisingly the killer had a Wood Element, the Element of perfectionism… no wonder he admired Mourn if his focus was on murdering, he probably aspired to be as good as Mourn.
“We can go global… heck, we are global boss… just give the orders, and we can start building up resources.” Kyle stated, the one member of the group who wasn’t in Columbia, staying in America to keep minor operations running.
The sixth member of the Columbian team, that dog, was dead thanks to the final battle, something Mourn was apparently glad for.
“Wait… we’re global?” Mourn asked, looking across the group, everyone but Axe nodding, and that was only because he didn’t actually care for anything but fighting and killing.
“Uh, yeah, we can now start selling abroad, generating money and orchestrating crime on a major scale, not to mention the other Pennhurst Patients.” Eddie pointed out, reminding Mourn that he did have some really special people who left the country to different places…
“…We really are dangerous huh, not just me, we are, this organization is?” Mourn asked, specifically looking at Eddie, the only one who was aware of everything in the organization except for Mourn, and even Mourn didn’t quite pay attention, just doing as he pleased.
He was smart enough to understand, he just didn’t care most times.
“Yes Boss, we, are dangerous. We can cause a lot of problems.” Eddie could at least admit this… even if he worried about how deep he was in this hole he dug…
Mourn, Laura, no one in this room knew of Eddie’s relation to their most dangerous enemy, the Chosen of America, and Eddie would keep it that way.
He was helping Mourn get ready to kill his younger brother…
But Eddie was in too deep to just leave Mourn, even without Mourn threatening to kill him for deserting, Eddie just couldn’t leave…
Curse him for being too nice.
“…Alright then, I have an idea, a way to announce our existence to the world, showing that we are a threat, and making sure that the governments can’t hide our existence anymore.” Mourn said after a moment of thought, snapping his fingers and pointing to Doc Cheshire.
“Doc, I want you to get the chef’s that came with us to start cooking meth, mixing cocaine, I don’t care, get some products made.” Mourn then pointed at Kyle.
“Kyle, you collaborate with the Doc, all product goes to you to be counted and sorted before being shipped to other cities where our people are, start dealing it out, make some revenue.” Kyle nodded, looking to the large grin on the doctor’s face.
“Laura, I’m going to need you to handle communications, I’ll give you a phone with a bunch of numbers saved, message everyone on that list of contacts and tell them to prepare for orders.” Laura looked a bit annoyed at being ordered around, but did not dare complain, just nodding with a frown.
“Axe, you’re going to need to wait until this plan starts for your part, but suffice to say you can kill as many as you want for this part. Just no women, or children.” A grunt was the reply.
That guy really hated talking.
“Eddie, you’re working with me, isn’t that fun?” Mourn’s grin was predatory, getting a nod from Eddie even as he felt worry, wondering what Mourn was about to do.
“Meeting dismissed, everyone head out. Laura, here, catch.” Mourn threw the phone softly at the woman, she caught it without much worry, walking out of the room with Doc Cheshire, Axe, and Kyle.
Now in the room with just Mourn and Eddie, the sound of the door clicking closed rang out, leaving Mourn to drop into a chair like a puppet with its strings cut.
“Fuck.” That was all Mourn said, leaving Eddie looking at the man with sympathy.
“Things went horribly wrong boss… it didn’t have to be that way, but it happened.” Eddie pointed out, getting a look from Mourn as he palmed his face, looking out from between his fingers at the second-in-command.
“Of course it went wrong, at the worst possible time? I never should have even tried.” Eddie looked at Mourn, wanting to argue, wanting to say that Mourn’s efforts weren’t in vain…
But he really couldn’t. Eddie couldn’t say those efforts weren’t in vain, when right at the finish line, the appearance of the Guild Masters tripped up everything.
“I was finally, finally going against everything I’ve been taught my entire life, wanting to see if I could have been something other than what I am… and I was immediately punished for even trying.” Eddie winced, looking at the dead stare of Mourn.
“Eddie. I’m never going to try again. I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been doing until now, and hurt, hurt more and more people, lashing out. Heck, I’ll even act worse.” Mourn said, leaving no room for argument, Eddie sighing deeply at those words.
“For what it’s worth, I’m sorry. Circumstance made you like this, and now you’re stuck like this huh?” Eddie asked, Mourn nodding simply, and leaving Eddie to shake his head as he stood from his seat.
“…Eddie.” Mourn said, getting Eddie’s attention before he left the room, the second-in-command standing at the door, looking back to Mourn’s slumped form.
“Thank you. For trying.” Mourn added after seeing Eddie’s confusion, getting a small, sad smile from Eddie.
“You’re welcome. You have a guy who tried to muscle in on our territory down in the basement by the way. Have fun.” Eddie added, not seeing the frown on Mourn’s face before Mourn sighed and then smiled…
Such a hollow smile.
In England, far away from Mourn and Shaun, the greatest Hokage ever, George effing Clements-
“The narrative always gets a bit whacky when I’m involved.” George complained aloud, cutting off the words flowing into his mind, and drawing odd looks from those in the room.
“Dear, not everyone can understand you like I do.” George looked to Felicity who was giving him a raised brow, reminding him that yes, he was in the presence of mere mortals.
“Right, sorry dear, where was I… oh yes, I wanted to talk about some issues involving the great story.” George’s confusing words aside, no one dismissed him as crazy, because crazy as he was, his words made sense in hindsight usually…
It was the Cassandra effect, something every Seer and Oracle underwent unwillingly, they couldn’t reveal the future unless doing so would do nothing, and even if they said exactly what would happen, no one around would believe it but other Seers or Oracles.
They could speak about things they shouldn’t by sounding crazy, as George revealed, but that was also unlikely to be understood…
Though George and most Seers and Oracles really did become a bit crazy by seeing the future.
“Okay, the narrative just finished explaining why I talk the way I do, by the way, nice choice of underwear Mike.” The mentioned person just shook his head with a sigh, knowing he was the butt of many of George’s jokes.
“He does make a good donkey, but enough of that, I need to be a bit serious… war is coming.” George finally stated, getting gasps from around the room, even as there was a knock of a cane against tiled floor.
“Enough. George, given that you just spoke straight, I presume we can’t do anything about this?” the Prime Minister asked, getting a nod from George.
“Exactly that, titled person without a name or description bar possessing a cane. Exactly that. Even with prior knowledge, you won’t be able to do anything about this because it is part of the three paths prophesy.” That drew glances around the room, those in the know understanding what George was speaking about.
“Uh, what is that exactly? The three path’s prophesy I mean.” Jade asked, a member of the conversation but very confused on what everyone else was talking about, even if she had heard the phrase from her sister a time or two.
“Ah, it doesn’t really concern you much beyond you being a romantic interest of one of the three paths.” George waved off her concerns, and her blush because who cared if she was embarrassed?
“Dear, I care if she’s embarrassed, she is my sister after all. Jade, don’t worry about it, things will happen as they should.” Felicity pointed out and Jade just nodded with her blush still on her face.
Poor, innocent twenty year old girl… George could afford to think that of her considering his mental age was jumping by leaps simply existing with his power.
“Okay, fine, I’ll explain a bit, the ‘three path’s prophesy’ is something all Seers and Oracles can see, regardless of the focus of their visions and powers, the reason is because it’s a focal point of reality.” George said, looking to Felicity.
“Yes, though George is considered the leader of all Seers and Oracles by virtue of being able to see the majority of the three paths prophesy, including the possible endings to it.” Felicity added on, looking back to the cardinal wearing Guild Master to finish the explanation.
“That’s mostly because the focal point of my Anima is one of the three, but that’s irrelevant. Point is, the ‘three paths’ refer to three people, who will shape the world based on their actions, their actions send ripples out that affect the entire world.” George added, making the Prime Minister hum in thought.
“The three people… would one of them not be that American Chosen, Arthur Clive? I hate to admit it, but he and his team hold the monopoly on the Dungeon at this stage, having killed more than half of the Demon Lords.” The Prime Minister asked, getting an odd ‘so-so’ gesture from George.
“Uh, actually not, surprisingly. Oh you were very close, but no cigar, Arthur is not one of the three… and the one he is related to isn’t even a thing yet.” George admitted, recalling that he had warned Shaun Fife of the same fact in the previous book.
“As for the other two, I doubt you two could admit to who those were, even other Seers and Oracles wouldn’t…” Jade pointed out, smart enough to catch onto what George and Felicity weren’t saying.
“Yeah, we can’t say anything about the other two, but one of them is going to act soon, and we won’t be able to stop him, only minimize the damage.” George admitted with a frown at his own limitations.
Even if he saw the future, George was limited, it was a horrible feeling, leaving the walking wrecking ball aimed at the fourth wall feeling annoyed.
“So that’s why you could warn us, because regardless of what you reveal he is still going to cause damage… for the sake of Jade, can you reveal the endings of the three paths?” George sighed, looking to his step-sister after the Prime Minister finished talking.
Even if they weren’t legally married, yet, it was a matter of time before Felicity and George got married… though it would probably happen off-screen, George was sure.
“The first, and unfortunately most likely path, is the one in which Chronos succeeds in conquering Earth, only to be killed by Shaun Fife when he arrives. This is the ‘Shaun Fife path’.” That drew some wide eyes, knowing who that person was.
“The second path, the next most dangerous path, is that the war-bringer kills Chronos and continues Chronos’ mission, destroying Earth unless he gets killed by a certain person. The ‘Faceless Path’.” George couldn’t exactly outright say the name of the person here…
“As for the third, the third person appears, killing Chronos, and works to further the advance of humanity on a dimensional level. Good luck sleeping with that information.” George said, grabbing Felicity and jumping out of a strategically placed open window.
Everyone in the room just stared in horror knowing that such a person was the only person they could rely on for information to such things… they were screwed.
