《Einherjar》B2 Chapter 10- Flowing TIme

“Well, I suppose I should be surprised, but I’m actually not.” Arthur admitted, looking at the Guild Master sitting across from him.

“Yeah, I mean, we did let you know he’d be leaving for a while… you see the baby pictures?” Dante Vasquez, acting Guild Master of America, asked, showing a picture on his phone to Arthur, leaving the head of Valhalla/Einherjar looking at the baby…

Shaun Fife’s child, the Guild Master was only to remain in America until the birth of his child before being shipped off somewhere… Columbia, if Arthur remembered correctly.

Granted, Arthur was told this information a week or two after killing the Rusted King, and it had been two months since then.

Far, far away in the land of Columbia, George cursed the heavenly potato for giving him wrong information on timing, before he got cuffed upside the head by Shaun for giving away their location.

But that’s to be explained another time.

It was now early August, and Einherjar had moved on to Area eight, Jotun currently working their way through Area seven, and Einherjar was still in the lead of the Chosen luckily.

After the media craze about Einherjar ‘opening their borders’ and allowing another team to join them, many hopefuls tried to put themselves forward, only to be refused, Einherjar would find those who they wanted to work with…

This only added onto the ‘elitist’ outlook that seemed tagged onto Einherjar’s image with the media.

Hearing a soft meow, Arthur barely reacted beyond scratching the chin of Sidhe who had magically appeared on his shoulder…

As normal.

Really, Arthur wondered about this cat of his, vanishing and reappearing when it suited it…

Though he saw her every day, there were days where he only saw Sidhe in the morning and then before sleeping.

“His child is cute. Clearly they look nothing alike.” Arthur admitted as Dante laughed in agreement.

Little Caleb didn’t really look like his father.

“So… am I supposed to help with the bank robberies now? I was told that I was free to ignore everything until he left and well…” Arthur was still against fighting his fellow humans, but a deal was a deal, and he stood by them.

“…I’m well aware you don’t want to. Shaun might force you, but I won’t. I’d really appreciate the help, but fighting is not for everyone.” Arthur clenched a fist, barely registering Sidhe licking his cheek before Arthur sighed.

“I’ll talk with the other members of Einherjar first. We’re going Dungeon diving, we’ll talk about this while in there.” Arthur let the doorman-turned Guild Master know what was going on while walking out.

“So, boss man is away yeah? Any idea when he’s coming back?” Michael asked, waiting for Arthur outside the door and falling into step alongside his best friend.

“No clue, from what it looks like, it’s dangerous… so knowing how scary Shaun is, I’d give it three months and then some.” Arthur admitted, not knowing the depth of how bad things were in Columbia.

“Hey he’s not that- okay, I can’t say it without laughing, Shaun is scary.” Michael’s laughter drew a chuckle from Arthur.

“Yeah. Also, saw the baby pictures, his kid looks nothing like him. So his son actually looks good.” Arthur’s words drew a laugh from Michael as they approached their team.

Greeting Ellie, Einherjar walked into the Entrance room, everyone checking stats, finally Arthur walked to the podium… only for Sidhe to place her paw on the podium screen.

Arthur nodded in satisfaction for a moment, also a bit annoyed at not having gained another Skill at level eighty…

But then again, what would he get? He’d really like a stat boosting Skill, but you couldn’t exactly pick the Skill you’d get, it wasn’t up to him.

How his next Skill was decided was something Arthur really, really didn’t know, but given his knowledge of the Soul, he figured it was probably something about ‘what he knew, what he did, and what he wanted to do’ all coming together to create a Skill.

On the other hand, wanting more was nice, but Arthur was also aware that he really shouldn’t be looking for more Skills when he already had so many.

From time to time he’d forget he had the Blink ability, and the ability to absorb enemy magic and send it back (based on magic used and his own magic ability) was something Arthur also forgot on occasion due to never really fighting Lightning or Darkness using enemies… he only got the ability a while after fighting Despair after all.

“So, after you’re done admiring your numbers, get the gate open.” Alice rushed Arthur who sighed before opening the options for teleportation, selecting the seventh Area.

“Ah, the Sky Lands… it’s still scary.” Arthur said as they walked through the glowing door, exiting to a floating island ringed with red runes around its edge, winds fiercely blowing around Einherjar.

It was quite beautiful actually… and scary.

The Sky Lands were truly terrifying to Arthur, who wasn’t really afraid of heights but… well, anyone would feel scared if your only way to move from point to point was hopping across floating islands.

The Floating islands were floating so high in the sky that when Einherjar looked down off the edge of an island once they just saw a huge expanse of blue.

That, and a massive dark blue mass swimming within that blue… it was so huge that Arthur had first thought it to simply be a deeper section of the ocean until it moved.

Whatever that thing was, Arthur was not dealing with it, ever… once more Arthur felt thankful that Chronos, evil warmongering devil that he was, had the state of mind to know that it was necessary to keep that thing from Adventurers.

So with death guaranteed if one was to fall off the islands, it was kind of obvious that Arthur was terrified, up until they noted that physically falling off of the islands was an impossibility…

Sure, crossing the islands by jumping was a necessity, but those gaps had winds blowing harshly to the point where an Adventurer, if they had the balance and centre of gravity for it, could walk across the nearly solid wind.

“Alright, let’s go, we’re two floors from the Demon Lord, and I want to be away from this place.” Arthur said easily, John nodding his head in agreement as he also disagreed with the heights.

“Whatever, I kind of like the breeze…” Alice added, which was understandable given that her second magical Element was Wind.

Darkness was the element of suspicion, of caution, whereas Wind was the Element of free thinking, of precision. It sounds like a strange combination, but Arthur could see how it suited someone like Alice.

With another Element to use, especially a ‘basic’ Element like Wind, Alice’s ability with magic jumped by a huge amount, using Darkness, Light or Mind magic took the most Mana, whereas the basic four Elements took the least.

So now she could use more magic, having the option of less, but powerful, or more but weaker.

“Let’s go.” Arthur focused, his Dagger of Hunger appearing in his hand along with Black Remorse, and instantly his friends noted the change in the air.

“Yes.” They answered as one as they moved through the gate to the sixty first floor.

For the past month or so, when Arthur entered the Dungeon, he had seemed to… change, kind of. It was the face of someone determined, though Arthur went through his highs and lows when it came to mood, this was a long period of… focus.

“Michael, three to the left, you should be able to get rid of two of them. Alice, handle the last one. When they’re hit, it should lure over another enemy that Emilia and I can handle.” Arthur commanded the moment he saw three (ironically flightless) birds.

The Zephyr Birds, capable of Wind magic, the birds were quite dangerous when Arthur and the others first arrived as they were faster than the enemies they were used to…

The birds focused their magic around their bodies, boosting their speeds, and using their actions of flapping their wings or kicking out to send out bursts of wind…

So while the rest of Einherjar was figuring it out, Arthur responded in kind, activating Spark Step, the greater variation, and mimicking their fighting styles.

Alice and Emilia figured out their own imitations, Alice getting it first what with an example right in front of her, and Emilia having very precise control over her magic.

Matt, Michael and John felt no need to speed up, for Matt, he didn’t need to get faster, he just needed to read the enemies better.

Much like how some athletes know what their opponents are doing before it happens, and move to intercept, Matt just had to figure out which movements resulted in what attacks.

Matt was damn good at doing that, and the only person in Einherjar as good as him at reading enemies was Arthur himself.

Michael, hearing the order, had his bow out and two arrows notched at once, his Archery Skill giving the ability to do something which was typically viewed as a non-combative skill.

Firing two arrows wasn’t normal understandably, but so were many of the things Adventurers were capable of.

At this point Einherjar barely batted an eye when one of their number did something ‘impossible’.

And as for why John didn’t need to move faster, if he ever had to run, something was wrong, especially when most of the time enemies didn’t know he existed.

The two arrows were released, John’s presence fading as Matt slid forward, shield aimed at the birds, waiting for the assault as the sneak attack hit.

One of the birds found an arrow through the eye, killing it instantly, and another instead raised its wing, blowing the second arrow off course, drawing a click of the tongue from Michael in annoyance.

“Don’t mind, continue.” Arthur ordered, raising a sparking hand as his Dagger vanished for a moment, waving his arm and sending jolts of electricity at the two birds dashing at them at extreme speeds.

No one expected the electricity to do anything beyond maybe stunning the birds, and they were right, for all that he was actually closer to a wizard than a swordsman, Arthur’s magic wasn’t that strong.

Instead it was nigh unending with his understanding of his own regeneration rates and control over how much Mana he’d use.

So being pelted by the bits of electricity, the birds were running at them at high speeds while dodging from side to side, allowing the bolts to go past them, leading up to a kick sent at Arthur.

Instead of hitting Arthur, the first bird found its kick intercepted by Matt, whose vicious grin alongside the bird’s squawk of pain, let them know he probably hit the bird’s foot with one of the spikes on his shield.

The second bird had jumped over Matt, recognizing that Matt would be dangerous to attack, and aiming for Arthur, only to be kicked in the side of the head by Emilia.

Arthur felt a frown on his face as Matt and Emilia fought the two birds, killing them as quickly as possible as three more Zephyr birds ran over from a nearby floating island.

“Alice, you got one? I’ll get the other two.” Arthur asked, getting a confused nod from Alice as the two of them moved towards where the birds would land on their little island.

Alice intercepted one of the birds easily, using two swords against the bird while the other two rushed Arthur.

“I’m getting a bit tired of being protected like that…” Arthur mumbled to himself, knowing that none of the other members of Einherjar would be able to hear his statement.

Every member of Einherjar had a role they had to play, yes, and so Matt guarded everyone, that was fine.

Arthur always felt a bit babied when his other teammates did something to protect him though…

He knew it was wrong to get mad about being helped, so he kept quiet, but it didn’t change how he felt about being unable to simply cut loose without one of his teammates attacking his enemies.

Arthur was beginning to consider going into the Dungeon alone, but then recalled that he’d probably look back to his thoughts in this moment and call himself dumb.

He knew he’d probably be regretting by the time they left the Dungeon today.

One of the birds slashed out with a wing, and instead of meeting the surprisingly tough wing with his blade, Arthur slid, his boot impacting the birds foot and causing it to flip forward with an indignant squawk of pain.

The second bird attempted to attack Arthur as he slid, leaving Arthur to smirk as he flipped his Dagger in his hand, stabbing into the ground and arresting his movement.

The attack would have still hit Arthur’s leg if Arthur hadn’t rolled his legs into the air before spinning his legs, wind-milling and hitting the bird’s leg, much like the first this bird was forced to flip, this one sideways as Arthur spun into a standing position, lashing out with his sword and lopping its head off with a spark of Lightning.

The first bird was standing by now, angrily rushing at Arthur while flapping it’s wings, sending blades of wind which Arthur couldn’t see…

But even if he couldn’t see the actual blades, he could see the beginning of the attacks.

Just from that, it was enough to know where the blade would be going after that point, if one saw the start of a strike, the ending should be obvious.

So weaving through the lines which should hold the air blades, Arthur dashed forward, the Dagger of Hunger, reappearing in his left hand, throwing it at the bird, interrupting its next attack, forcing it to deflect the Dagger or be hit in the head.

Arthur smirked at the reaction, as with his extreme speed he was already in front of the bird, stabbing into its throat violently as he summoned his Dagger into his hand once more.

So after ending the life of the bird with the Dagger of Hunger, Arthur looked at his comrades, noticing each of them ending or having already ended their own enemies, meaning they could keep moving.

“Alright, gather the stones, let’s continue, we’ll be taking the path with the least encounters on average until the eighth floor.” Arthur added, no one arguing against the order…

Why would they, fighting more when they had quite a few floors to go through was dumb if they wanted to conserve energy.

The fights through the Sky Islands weren’t truly difficult, just different in that the group was used to fighting balanced opponents, average in speed, average in strength, average in durability.

Once in a while they’d find something like the old Lantern Brutes, high durability and strength, but extremely slow…

Most of the creatures in the Sky Islands were on the opposite extreme, their durability and strength were overall low but their speed was top tier, and with the use of magic their attack ability was high.

In other words they were fighting a whole lot of bird type monsters who fought similarly to a mix between Arthur (the magic) and Emilia (the speed).

Except the birds were much weaker than either member of the couple, any of the members of Einherjar bar John could kill two of those birds in a straight up fight…

On the other end, the birds were also dangerous, at floor seventy five Alice got hit by one of the birds and the gash that appeared on her arm probably wouldn’t have looked out of place in a car crash.

Used to gore as the group was, seeing one of their own injured was nerve wracking every single time, even if John had her healed up with a single word, it showed that the birds died easily, and they’d probably kill just as easy.

“Try that shit again!” Matt roared at a bird as it struck his leg with one of those wind blades, the injury being an extremely thin cut, reminding the group that Matt was difficult to even injure in the first place.

That particular bird died in a horrific manner.

Other than the Zephyr birds who were the staple enemies of the Sky Islands, there was also large hummingbird like enemies who shot bullets of wind at the group from a distance, pestering them in the middle of their fight with the Zephyr birds.

And the ‘heavy’ hitter of the Sky Islands was a baby wyvern.

A ‘wyvern’ was a dragon without forearms, essentially having wings instead of arms, so Arthur explained the terminology.

Wyverns were ‘lesser’ dragons, not as intelligent, not as powerful be that magically or physically, though in common fantasy books wyverns were typically a mount for aerial militaries.

When Michael asked why dragons weren’t used instead, Arthur just laughed at his face and asked Michael why ants didn’t just tame elephants.

Analogy complete, the group fought through wyverns easily…

Baby wyverns, that was an important note, as these wyverns couldn’t fly, instead using their wings as massive clubs, using their long, flexible necks to turn their heads into flails and to bite from unpredictable angles, along with their tails, even baby wyverns were quite dangerous…

Michael now understood that yes, dragons were even scarier.

A baby wyvern was already the size of a small house ignoring its wing span, at about three metres tall, and about five, six metres wide with its wings expanded, both wings being two or so metres long each.

Covered in natural armour, scales, and faster than its body expected, wyverns were dangerous…

“So knowing that, it’s likely a fully grown wyvern would be the boss… I think.” Arthur guessed with a shrug, knowing that knowing what the boss would be was an impossibility.

No one would have expected the Demon Lord of the Ruined Kingdom to be a golem as there was no hint to that being a possibility.

“A full grown wyvern… and these are babies? Plus the adult ones can fly… shit.” John complained, kicking the dead body of the wyvern even as it vanished into nothingness, leaving behind a scale and its soul stone.

“Eh… balance dictates that an enemy that can fly, should fly forever instead of landing where it can be attacked… so it might be that it can’t fly forever, or that it takes more damage in the sky, who knows… but at the same time…” Arthur didn’t need to finish that part of his sentence.

They all knew that he was going to mention how this was reality, even if the Dungeon was game-like, even if they had levels, stats, skills, this was still reality.

It didn’t matter if Arthur was level nine thousand, if his head blew off he’d probably be dead.

So they’d have to see what would happen when they got to the Demon Lord.

Finally finding the way to the seventy ninth floor, and entering it, Arthur asked John to check his watch.

“It’s about three… the maps are getting bigger so we spend more time moving even when taking the shortest route huh?” John frowned realizing they still had to go back, with their enemies all ‘re-spawned’.

“Yep. I don’t know when, but at some point we’re probably going to need to stay overnight inside the Dungeon… that’s going to be annoying.” Arthur sighed, and the group agreed, that would be horrible.

With safe-zones they could actually take naps, but safe-zones were not on every floor, and they weren’t always on the path to the next floor, one time in the seventh Area they found a safe-zone in the opposite end of the map from the exit of the floor.

The safe-zone was further than the stairs to the next floor, and they only found it first because they had gone the wrong way while mapping the floor.

If a safe-zone could be found, they could, in fact, stay overnight…

For other Adventurers it might be a problem, as Adventurers who enter from the same entrance can encounter each other within the Dungeon.

Arthur was actually mildly surprised that no one had committed a crime in the Dungeon yet.

Or no one has noticed…

Arthur paused for a moment before turning back to the stairs and climbing back up.

“Come on, tomorrow we rush here. We need to fight the Demon Lord in the next three days at max.” Arthur ordered, shuddering at the reminder of his odd mind.

Ooh, ‘reminder’, that’s a new one…

The group knew something was wrong with Arthur, and he wasn’t surprised they noticed, he wasn’t exactly subtle with his flinches once the voice started up again.

You really should stop flinching… it looks weak, it makes you look… delicious.

Arthur had the feeling that it wouldn’t go over well with his friends if they knew he had started to hear a voice in his mind talking about ‘being in charge’ and so on.

Though Arthur was reasonably certain that the voice was just messing with him when it spoke about eating him.

Sure… let’s go with that.

The journey back was punctuated with occasions where Arthur would be slow on the draw, still killing his enemies, and yet his eyes looked like they were looking beyond what was there…

Arthur could only let his friends know that it wouldn’t prevent him from fighting, and that he was working through it.

You know, I was pretty surprised myself when I found this… I haven’t had a conversation partner in a while.

Arthur had originally thought that the voice was… well, something internal. He still thought it was actually some of his violent thoughts made vocal…

I mean, a conversation partner I hadn’t eaten… or defeated… but I’ll beat you eventually too… or will you kill me?

Then there were things like that. He had never resorted to cannibalism, and unless his violent thoughts had delusions of being extremely powerful, this wasn’t actually him.

This was something else.

You’re finally accepting that I’m not what you think I am? Well, you’d be really surprised if you found out what was going on… your emotions will be delicious once you do.

And like that, Arthur suddenly felt drained, falling underneath a shot from one of those hummingbird enemies, named Boom birds for the booming noise when their attacks hit.

Recovering easily, Arthur’s dagger blurred into the air, hitting the bird in the skull and killing it instantly as Arthur’s group kept moving, still confused by why Arthur looked like he had lost consciousness for a while.

Ha, if you had died from that then this talk would have been worthless… I can’t devour it all, surprisingly, but suddenly having a lot of your emotions missing must be weird.

Arthur begrudgingly agreed to the words of the voice…

Having his annoyance, fear, anger, and determination vanish on him left off key, feeling like he was undergoing a panic attack of some sorts before he started to breathe heavily, recovering from the odd occurrence.

I wouldn’t really know though, I don’t have emotions other than the want for more… the need to devour more. And I suppose envy… I’ve never felt envy before now.

Arthur couldn’t muster up sympathy for the voice, somehow draining his emotions like it was, whatever it was, it was debilitating…

And why was it in his head?

Is it really me in your head? Or did you consider it was vice-versa?

That sounded like some mind-trip that surprisingly had Arthur rolling his eyes.

I’ll be back again, and we’ll talk again… I like these talks. Also, when you complete the First Fold… well, you’ll know it when it happens.

Arthur felt the presence vanish, and breathed a sigh in relief, noticing Michael’s hand on his shoulder.

“You alright again?” Michael asked, concern in his eyes as Arthur nodded with a sigh.

“Yeah… I don’t know what it is but… I don’t think it’s going to go away anytime soon.” Arthur admitted with a frown, and everyone looked worried…

But they also knew, sad as it was, Arthur wouldn’t tell them what it was.

Arthur was one of those guys, he didn’t exactly look strong, but emotionally he was… but in that same sense, when he was disturbed by something, he tried to handle it by himself.

Arthur was still learning to be open with his emotions, keeping his problems away from his friends to deal with it alone, saying that it was his problem to sort through.

Emilia was helping, reaffirming certain things Arthur was uncertain about himself, and helping him figure other things out…

But he wasn’t yet at that point.

“Whenever you’re ready. Come on, I think we levelled up.” Michael said, getting a smile from Arthur as they used the fast travel to exit the Dungeon once more…

Levels had a way of making Arthur happy anyway, though the only reason he was levelling up was because he had levelled up two days ago.

No major change, and yet Arthur was really hoping that his Quick Reflexes Skill would rank up by the next Dungeon dive…

Though it would probably only be ranking up in two days or so.

“What about Jotun, we got any updates from them?” Arthur asked, Michael checking his phone as they exited the podium room, looking for any messages.

“Nothing yet, they stay in the Dungeon even longer than we do, they’re busy catching up after all… but they should be close to level sixty five?” a jump of about seventeen levels since their meeting, a month to level up seventeen times was respectable.

It wasn’t as crazy as Einherjar, let alone Arthur who levelled up faster than his comrades, but it was considered high class.

“That’s good, once they equalize with us we can have two teams searching for the stairs to the next floor instead of just one.” Arthur’s smirk made some of the nearby Adventurers scared…

Most images of Arthur on social media had him looking serious, rare was he laughing or smirking, but his smirk was… predatory, in some way.

Leaving the Dungeon after all was said and done, Einherjar split up, along with splitting their earnings from the Dungeon, Arthur looking at his motorbike for a bit before shrugging and walking away.

As if anyone would steal his bike even if he left it there. Firstly, the Guild would viciously harm anyone who tried. Then any ‘patriotic’ person would defend Arthur’s property as he was the face of the American Adventurer scene, he wasn’t quite at that level but he was incredibly important to ‘America-centric’ people.

And finally, Arthur himself would hurt anyone who did something that dumb.

“Hey, aren’t you going to be using your bike today?” Arthur blinked in confusion before looking at the guy sitting on a wall.

“Don’t feel like it. I need the walk to clear my head.” Arthur said, not recognizing the voice of this person…

“I see. Well, I hope you have a nice walk man.” The guy stood, walking away while keeping his hands in his hoodie pockets…

Arthur hadn’t actually seen the man’s face… suspicious was a heavy word on his mind, and Arthur was tempted to chase him down, instead leaving the man as he walked away.

The man walked away from the Guild, walking into an alley and pulling out a phone, using the quick dial option.

“So… how was he?” the man in the alley shuddered at the voice, looking to make sure no one saw him as he teleported to the roof of the building next to him.

“He’s getting stronger… Boss, I know your plan but… are you sure?” the teleporter asked, hearing Mourn chuckling on the other side of the phone.

“Of course I’m sure… no kid, I’m just talking to a friend.” The teleporter blinked at the unexpected segue, then realized that Mourn was probably talking to someone else.

“I’m certain. If I achieve my goals here, then we’ll have the leeway for our plans… and if we have that strength, he’ll probably be our biggest obstacle. Watch him.” The teleporter grunted in affirmation, the phone disconnecting… Mourn was scary, even when he was in a different country…

The teleporter wondered how Columbia would be afterwards…
