《My Travels Through Another World: A Dragon's Tail》Chapter 19: Adventurer’s Guild

After spending a few weeks with playing with Lilly since talking with Aoi. I decide it’s time to take a look at the city. I’m especially curious about that large building, not that I’m bored since Lilly’s studying and Aoi is napping with Lila… and Lila doesn’t remember me today.

*Smack*

Slapping my face in order to clear my thoughts and head towards the mysterious building. It looks to be only a few stories high, but the amount of land it takes up is more than most buildings here. Hmm I think our house is still bigger… just a little.

I find out the building was the Adventurer's guild. The Guild was full of armed men and women of all sorts, with a few magicians here and there. It was a very impressive sight, they even had a tavern in the building! As I wander around there was a wall of posters with various jobs and a reception area, probably to accept these jobs. Something like an Adventurer's Guild exist here huh… I wonder if I should join it after Lilly grows a little older.

It could be fun traveling the world taking jobs that kind of life isn’t bad. The poster on the board seem to have different letters on the top right hand corner varying from D to SSS. I wonder if that’s the requirement to take the job? How do they even know that you killed a monster? I turn to a nearby pretty receptionist lady and ask her my questions. Not because she was cute mind you, I just had...questions.

(Receptionist Girl) “Yes? You seem a little young to be an Adventurer, are you perhaps wondering what we do here?”

Well she certainly is sharp, and here I thought she was just a poster girl.

“Yes, I was interested on how the guild operates.”

The Receptionist gives me her best business smile and starts to explain.

(Receptionist Girl) “The Guild operates by taking various jobs from the local populace or the Kingdom itself varying from finding lost children... such as yourself, to slaying monsters. Depending on the rank of the Adventurer they can take quests of the same level or lower. In the case of a group with sufficient numbers may be allowed to take on a job of a higher rank depending on the nature of the quest. Adventurer ranks start at lowest D up to the highest rank of S. There are only a few S rank adventurer’s active, one of which is this branch’s Guild Master.”

Oh? There’s a capable person here, that’s reassuring. I wonder who this Guild Master is… he must be strong. Of course I’ll ignore the joke about there being a job to return me home and continue my inquires.

“Thank you for the information. How does the Guild confirm a job is complete?”

Maybe they have some kind of magic guild card that can record the kills or job completions. That would be awesome and make my life that much easier. Or maybe they have some kind of magical gem that can record data.

(Receptionist Girl) “The submitter of the quest will confirm completion with the guild, in the case of monster subjugation a part of it’s body will suffice.”

Well that was anti climatic… why can’t this world be more convenient? I thank the girl and continue meandering about the guild. Most of the people here spare me none of their attention, which is good for me. I’d rather not cause a commotion if I can help it.

My attention moves towards an object in the corner of my eye. There was a poor unattended mug sitting on the bar all by its lonesome. I had to check on it and make sure it wasn't feeling neglected. As I got closer I could smell it, the smell reminding me of my favorite stout beer in my previous life time.

Unable to resist I took a quick look around and grabbed the mug and attempted to drink from it. Probably not my smartest idea, but I haven't had anything but water. And honestly with everything happening lately, I think the Universe owes me a beer, right? Just as I was about to take a sip, someone suddenly picks me up by my collar and pulls me away from my beer.

"Just a sip! That's all I really want!"

I protest as I watch a man clad in armor chug the beer in one gulp.

(Man who stole my beer) "This stuff here isn't for whelps like you boy. How'd you get in here."

I start flailing about, since being suspended in air, is not exactly my favorite pass time

"You could have at least enjoyed it! Drinking it like that is disrespectful to the brewer! You guys left the door unlocked. So I came in through the front door, or have you never heard of it?"

I jeer at the man. He begins to laugh like one of those cheap mid boss villains on a kids show so I couldn't resist giving him a swift kick to the shins. As soon as he received my, maybe slightly bitter about the beer, kick he dropped me to the ground and was pretty pissed off at me.

He definitely felt that kick, that'll show him not to take my beer from me. He took a swing at me with his fist, so I move underneath his swing and grab his hand and simply pull him in the same direction and throw him by adding my own force to his momentum. I initially didn't want to cause a ruckus here I have no idea what I was thinking...

It's my story and I'm sticking to it, but after that throw I've caught everyone's attention now. To my surprise they were nice enough to give us some room.

(Beer Thief)"I don't know how you did it whelp, but you've pissed me off. I'm gonna teach you what happens when you piss of an Adult"

Not very convincing of a statement, while you're trying to dust off yourself after getting schooled by a kid.

(Man who thinks he knows how to drink beer) "Follow me whelp, I'll show you how a real man fights"

I just shrug and follow as the room is full of chatter now.

(Adventurer A) "Picking a fight with a child now, does he have no shame.”

(Adventurer B) “We should call the Guild master before this gets out of hand."

There were even a few who wanted to see the fight and started betting. We ended up moving to the testing/training area. Leading them there, I felt like we were ducklings following our mother... just bigger and more shiny.

As soon as we reach our destination the crowd started to gather and look. We’ve got quite a lot of people for some guy fighting a kid... The Beer Thief turns around to me and points the a weapon rack nearby.

(Pompous Beer Thief) "Pick whatever you weapon you want whelp. I'll fight you bare handed to make this fair"

As he lets out his cheap laugh. His laugh annoys me like no other and at this point, I really wouldn't mind shutting him up.

"If we were to be fair, you'd have to choose a weapon and tie both my arms behind my back! I wouldn't want anyone thinking I'm picking on you."

Looks like I hit a nerve his face looks like he's about to blow his top, which was totally worth it. I see him then grab a spear nearby and twirl it about like a circus act. He even does a little Kabuki like gesture at the end.

(Beer Thief with a stick) "I'll make you regret those words whelp!"

At this point I'm not sure if he knows the irony of him calling me a whelp, because I really am a dragon whelp. I reach into my bag and pull out my equipment, my bracers, sword and dagger and put them on as the man impatiently waits for me.

"It'd be best for your sake if you took this seriously and not think of me as just some regular old kid, or you'll be in a world of pain."

I figured I should at least give the poor sap good warning before I curb stomp his face but he seems to pay no heed, I sigh and draw my weapons and dash at him. As expected from a seasoned adventurer he was caught by surprise at the speed I came at him but quickly recovered and swung his spear at my legs intending to deprive me of movement.

Having learned my lesson from last time I jumped into the air and bounced off the spear with my dagger. Clashing with the spear I pushed myself forward and spun towards him slashing my sword towards his shoulder. His reaction speed wasn't half bad he saw me coming and pushed himself back with his spear. This caused me to only graze his shoulder with my attack, I wasn't going to let up on him yet though.

As soon as I landed I did a jumping back kick to his chest knocking him back a few steps to catch his breath. Furious he grips tightly and looks like he's ready to kill me. I can feel his killing intent from here, I have no choice. I'm going to have to go for the throat here or else this will be more trouble than it’s worth.

Just before we were to attack, another man yells at us to stop…? That voice sounds kinda familiar to me…? Reflexively I turn to look at who it was. As soon as our eyes met, I knew this wasn't going to end well. Please let me be wrong.

(Man) "You... what are... never mind this you two will stop this nonsense NOW, and you kid... MY OFFICE NOW!"

Oh no… I am definitely not wrong…Looking over at the Beer Bandit I had been fighting, he suddenly became all coy, I even heard several people gasp and heard some of them talk.

(Gawking Adventurer) "Oh that kids in for it the Guild Masters furious."

A small group had to chime in too.

(Chatty Adventurer) "Didn't the Guild Master call you last week, how'd it go?"

The adventurer shivered and replied to his friend

(Frightened Adventurer) "I thought we agreed to NEVER bring that up again, you couldn't pay me enough to go back in there.“

I slowly follow the Guild Master into his office.

"Uh, I'll explain everything... so you don't look so angry Harvey."

Slowly I close the door behind me.
