Chapter 20: Blue fire and void blood beast
Fang looking up at the cloud of blood knew that his mother was facing whoever had ordered his brother’s kidnaping, however with his level of strength he would be able to do nothing.
But he still needed to tell his mother that Mathias was safe now after all if the one who challenged her had that much confidence then she might be at a disadvantage, with everything that had happened he would not be as easygoing as he was before instead he would make sure he and his family could survive anything.
While he couldn’t do much now he could at least find a way to make sure his mother could fight without burden. But to do so would be quite difficult and the only thing he could think of was to go himself.“East do you have any ideas on how to get a message across to my mother?”* * *Luna was furiously sending endless amounts of blood she had collected at Lesser but he was to quick and his strength was nothing to scoff at. Even as an old man in his later years he could still fight off almost anyone. Bet none of this deterred her as her only thought was to kill him. By expending more mana into her domain spell she began to turn the drops of rain that fell into small swords. This however wasn’t her final plan as the floor began to be dyed red in blood.
“This crazy old man if I don’t kill him today I’ll hunt him down.”
Luna at this point wasn’t in her right mind thinking of nothing but killing Lesser. Their battle could be called flashy but at the same time dull one side was using a domain smell to attack while the other was doing his best not to be pierced and killed with a big smile on his face.
“Ahhh it seems I have to try a bit harder to get her to use more spells.”
With that a blazing fire surrounded like armor it protected him but it wasn’t enough to stop the mana infused blood. With the ever present smile on his face Lesser let out a deviating roar. “Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!” along with the roar the fire around him began to change color going from red to light orange and finally setting on a dark blue color. Luna looked at him with some worry, if her children were near hen going all out could harm them. But if Lesser was going to give it his all then there was nothing to do but respond in kind.
“Old man I was letting you off easily, just planning to kill you a little but now that you’vegotten serious… Die.”
The blood in the area was no longer going to be used to surprise Lesser from the ground and quickly traveled to Luna. While looking at Lesser who had gotten serious she took out a knife and made a cut across her palm. When she added her blood to the rest of the collected blood it immediately began to turn black and give off an ominous aura.

The black blood then began to collect around her and formed a sphere around her with a diameter of four meters. Seeing this Lesser had a peaceful smile on his face and no longer looked like a mad war monger.
“Ah finally she’s going all out, with some luck I’ll be able to play for a while.” As if someone had given a start signal the two attacked Luna’s black blood turned unto tens of whips while Lesser struck them with his sword, neither giving an inch to the other. Inside the sphere Luna began to chant.
“Blood of the ancients head my call. Let your blood flow through to the world and devastate the land. Those of carnage and destruction follow my lead and destroy this world once more. Ancient Titian’s Blood Rise!” With the completion of her spell practically all her mental strength and mana was drained in a moment. Lesser began to strike harder and faster against the black blood whips and began to gain ground when he looked at the floor between himself and Luna. Blood began spewing from the ground some red and some a dreadful silver color.
“Ohhh this is bad. When did she learn that?” The blood began to take the form of a red giant dragon with silver linings that outlined where it’s scales and other parts should have been had it been a real dragon. Looking at the dragon it had a very familiar appearance.
“Void Dragon. I thought she said that it would be impossible to use without reaching the saint level? Wait did she reach it? No, so it should be a weakened version. This is good.”
Without minding the black blood any longer Lesser raised his flames once more and they went from a dark blue to a lighter shade. With this the black blood would not damage him fatally although it would cause great pain every time he was struck. While enduring the strikes from the black blood whips he ran towards the dragon whose roar was deafening.
No longer speaking words of joy but rather fully immersing himself in combat Lesser was slashing his sword parrying the claws of the dragon and striking whenever he could. But his strikes were all but useless as this was not a living creature but a construct of blood.
Regardless he struck continuously and fought will all the power that could be displayed by someone yet to reach the saint level. But slowly he was beginning to show signs of slowing down. From a small distance Luna could see all that was going on and thought that this was a good chance to finish the old man.
“Void Dragon finish him!”
Just as she said that a large flame erupted into the sky a couple of miles away. Strangely enough the flame didn’t just dissipate into the air, it began to form three words.
“MOTHER HE’S SAFE”
Because Mathias called her mama she knew that there was only one person who her second con could be with giving her an instant relief. Lesser also looked back somewhat startled.
All he could think of was, did she have another older child? Was this older child able to defeat his seven trained warriors? Despite them only being with him for a short amount of time he gave them a sense of unity and some had even advanced to the ki transforming stage.

With seven of them there it should be difficult for a child to obtain victory. And from the look of it the child was a magician otherwise how would he be able to send so much fire into the sky. This meant that it was also likely that he had a strong companion or several companions. Having his plan ruined Lesser jumped back and let out a small sigh.
“Luna you small one was asleep the whole time. My fun is over and I have nothing more to do here. I’ll just go find my disciple and be on my way… although I might not find him quickly because I doubt he stayed where I left him. So I’ll be staying with you for some days.”
With nothing more to say Lesser disappeared from where he stood leaving only a flame dissipating into the air. Luna looked at the flame that lesser had left behind in shock and disbelief, in the past they were part of the same group and only now had she remembered something he had told her constantly.
“We should have a fight without restraints where if one of us slips up death would come, one day little elf one day.”
He had also said similar thing to the others of their group but none except Liz had fallen to his provocations. But now she had done the same and fallen to the old man’s provocation. And his words were true during their fight if one of them had slipped death would come to them and fast. Shaking her head at such thoughts she began to focus on her sons.
* * *
Fang had sent up a signal using all the control and mana that he and East could muster up. Luckily it was rather large and using their most compatible element Fang believed that it couldn’t be missed by his mother. With this she could fight without having any worry and Fang could focus on his now sleeping brother. But because he had thoroughly exhausted himself and East plus with his little brother sleeping they had no means of continuing towards the city. Instead Fang chose to recuperate and then head out. His mother would also soon come and find him.
Earlier he had heard the roar of a beast and felt the presence of fire ki even from where he was standing meaning that the battle was likely coming to its climax. After a while no large clash happened and both the fire ki and the roaring beast simply dissipated. This began to worry him as he could not determine the victor and would need to go and find out if his mother was alive or not.
This began new worries in his heart, from what his mother told him she wouldn’t lose to could do so, if one person was capable of something then how could others not be? With this in mind Fang forced himself up then with his brother on his back and East on his shoulders he began to head to the location we’re he last felt the powers of his mother and her opponent clash.
* * *
Lesser could be considered insane by most but he still had a good amount of sense in his old age. First he made his way to the Dwarven Kingdom’s royal palace. Although he was a common household name that many feared, that was only the criminals whose deeds could warrant execution. Most good nobles or those in a position that lead them to oppose criminals would welcome his arrival with open arms.
And from what he knew of the Dwarven king he seemed to be a warrior who had a good heart and would avoid war at close to any cost. So Lesser chose to reveal himself and give any bandits or criminals that plagued the kingdom’s capital a good scare by meeting with the King.
Of course he knew that just going around killing criminals wouldn’t be okay with any kingdom, most upper nobles and even kings sometimes had criminals who worked for them and became the dominate criminal force to deter others from actions that could be considered too heavy.
Without any prior audience arrangements Lesser simply strolled by the guards who seemed to not have noticed him. While looking around the castle he was able to determine where the audience chamber would be and headed in that direction. Lesser had been welcomed into countless castles and could tell how they were built fairly easily.
After reaching the audience chamber he found the king surrounded by many upper nobles shouting about a commotion that was most likely caused by the blood elf. While he walked Lesser’s presence grew stronger and his steps reverberated throughout the hall. Everyone looked back towards him.
“What? Who are you? How did you get in here?”
“Guards intruder!!”
Seeing some panic while other kept their composure Lesser could tell who the competent ones were right away.
“No need for that let me introduce myself then answer your questions about the situation outside.”
Lesser began to speak in a clam elderly voice that would never match his previous actions, from his voice all one could tell was that he was a kind old man.
“Speak.”
With the king’s permission Lesser began to speak once more.
“My name is long forgotten but I have been given the title of Lesser War Fiend, as for what’s going on outside well I had a bit of fun with an old friend…”
After taking some time to explain what had happened and promising to reduce any unwanted criminal activity in the city and surrounding cities Lesser left the palace and began to head to Luna’s home.
(author's note: so this one is a little shorter but ill make up for that by doing another 4000 word one next week. also from now on i will be uploading one on monday, tuesday, and friday. thank you for reading)

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
