《The Inventor of Magic》3: Borrowed Transport

Currently I'm hovering a lot higher in the sky than silver wings are able to go... Why? Well it turns out that with Silyan being so popular with the rich and successful, a lot of the kids and parents here have already bought themselves the highly expensive [Flight] array which in itself costs a small fortune but to top it off many of the kids here have custom made wings that increase speed, stability etc... These cost at least 5X the original ones.
Anyway, I don't want to just go flying down there with my golden wings, of which only 2 have been made (1 for my myself and 1 for Richard) when the rest of the world only knows about Richard's pair of golden wings. It will just bring me unnecessary attention. Which I don't want.
Fortunately, these rich snobs are not just going to school via flight, it looks as if there is a whole load in chauffeur driven cars as well (Whoopie doo).
Anyway, I glide a bit further away from the campus and land in an alley off the side of the street. Deactivating my wings, I walk out onto the pavement and start walking towards Silyan.
I look at my watch.
"*sigh* five minutes to get there and I'm easily over ten minutes away after that glide... Oh well, it's the first day, I can afford to be slightly late.",
I wonder how the everything works? I haven't been to school since I was five, and after that I was self taught. If it weren't for Richard's proposal I would have never gone to an education facility.
As I was walking along, for the first few minutes, I kept glancing up only to see families of people flying to Silyan to send their precious children off, really I will never understand why the parents need to go with the kids. I guess it's just needless worry.
After sighing for what seems the umpteenth time today I stop walking and turn to my right.

"Well, I haven't seen one of those in a few years. I thought they were all closed down.",
In front of me was what used to be called a 'bike shop'. They sold bicycles, which as of late with all the technological advancements have gotten increasingly unpopular, but as someone who lives by myself in the countryside I own a few to get to the local shops.
Walking up to the front door I push open the door and walk inside. The interior looks well cared for- if not a tad dated- and in the middle of the shop were various bicycles of all shapes and sizes.
An old man walked out from one of the back rooms after hearing the front door open. Although frail, his old age didn't conceal his intelligent eyes and calloused hands, obviously from repairing bikes.
"Hello, welcome to my little shop here. Did you come to the wrong place?",
"Er, no. You do sell these bikes right?",
"Yes! Yes of course! What type of bike are you after?",
"I don't really know, I'm in a hurry and I need to get to somewhere quickly. Do you have road bikes?",
The old man stared at me with curious eyes.
"Wait... Is that the Silyan logo?! What would a child going to the famous 'magic' school need a bike for.? Wait, now that I look at you-you don't look very well off... Hmm, road bikes is it?",
"Yes?",
"Well since you're in a hurry I'll lend you a bike, you seem trustworthy enough. But I need you to do something for me.",
"What?",
"Ha, ha. Well on your way back to here to return the bike could you get this old man the daily newspaper. You see my legs are not the same as they used to be and I can't go walk to the shop anymore. Do this and I'll lend you a bike.",
What a weird old man. Why would he just lend me a bike and then tell me to get a newspaper for him...? Well anyway I won't be late so this seems like a fair deal.

"Okay, deal.",
"Great, follow me kid",
I followed the old man out from the front into one of the back rooms, and by the state of the bike in here I guess this is where his better ones are kept.
The old man pointed at a black road bike that was next to the wall.
"You can borrow that one, just return it by the end of the day and bring me a newspaper.",
"Thanks. I'll be back later then."
The old man hobbled back off into a different room leaving me by myself. I walked over to the bike and wheeled it out of the room to the front room and then out of the store.
"Right. I've got three minutes. Here we go!",
And with that, I rode directly onto the road and started pedaling as fast as I could.
---
Five minutes later
---
Okay, I'm late...
I arrived at the gate slightly late due to my bad sense of direction. I went the wrong way at an intersection and needed to double back on my self. Then I decided to take a shortcut that left me careening into a dumpster. Anyway, I arrived at last and almost all the parents have left. All the students are already inside.
Standing just behind the large gates leading onto the Silyan campus is a strict looking woman with her arms folded in front of her. It seems she was told to look for late people. Oh well, I might as well just carry on.
Just as I was about to ride my bicycle through the gates the woman spoke.
"Stop!",
I stopped.
"Only students and members of staff are allowed to enter. If you want to make an appointment come back at the end of the day.",
What? That's quite rude! Oh, it may be the way I'm dressed. Every other kid going to Silyan I've seen so far has been in suits or dresses or other fancy/stylish clothes. Compared to them of course I'd not look like a student.
"Erm, actually I am a student.",
"What?!", obviously my appearance was worse than I thought.
"Why should I believe you.", the woman asked accusingly.
"I have a letter for the headmaster.", I said whilst pulling out the letter from one of my pockets.
The woman seemed surprised for a moment before the stern look re-appeared on her face.
"Okay follow me. You can leave the bike there, you can get it in a while.",
I quickly got off the bike and propped it against the wall and started to follow the woman.
"You do know you're late.",
"Yes.",
"Why are you late.",
"I took a wrong turn.",
"I see...",
After that I just followed the woman in silence.
"The rest of the new students are already in the auditorium for the headmasters speech. You're lucky you weren't any later otherwise you wouldn't be able to give him your 'message'.",
Before I knew it we were in front of what I assumed to be the auditorium. Walking through a large set of double doors we found ourselves in a corridor with a door right in front which lead to the auditorium itself and and door to the left.
A lot of chatter was heard coming from the auditorium, obviously from the 800 odd new first-year students.
Weirdly though the woman went down to the door on the left and I followed.
*Knock* *Knock*
"Come in.", a male voice responded from the other side of the door.
"Excuse us", the woman replayed as she opened the door and led me through to an office. As I walked through I saw the headmaster and oddly enough I recognized him.

Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★

Sanguis
In a world inhabited by vampires, various factions are vying for dominance, whether through wars or grueling tournaments. In the midst of the conflict, two unsuspecting humans become caught in the battle. Note: My first story on here, I wanted to try writing a story with battles and leveling up, the kind of story where a character starts at the bottom and world their way up. I hope this story is a good chance to see what works and try out a few different ideas I’ve had.

The End
There are five days left. The End is a miracle 10,000 years in the making that will free all from the confines of the world. The gods will soon be born. There is nothing that can be done about this. Not a webnovel, but a screenplay, submitted as my dissertation for my screenwriting degree. Sort of experimental. I have learned that I dislike writing screenplays, but all the same, I thought I'd post it anyway so it's at least worth something that way.
