《The Downward Spiral》Chapter 1. Rock the House Down
....I can tell that she's green with envy
Everytime you talk or think of me,
Why you even left, no one knows
but hell, that's the path that you chose~
"But hell...that's the path you chose!"
The audience sang the last of the lyrics with us in harmony before erupting into cheers and applause.
"That's right bitches! We are Black Ink! Who out here wants an encore!?" Lily, our lead singer shouted into the microphone.
The crowd screamed and cried back for more and I couldn't help but to be irritated at Lily for asking. I stepped back towards the barstool that had my used cigarette and took a quick hit from it. There goes Princess again, always trying to milk it at every concert we perform at. I thought dryly and rolled my eyes while blowing the smoke up into the crisp night air.
I aligned my hands back along the strings of my bass, my fingers idly plucking the notes to start up our next hit song, "Unzip Me." Before we started, I felt my phone vibrate in my jean pocket. "Shit that's right, I completely forgot that I was supposed to pick up my stupid brother from the library today."
My fingers danced on their own to the memorized beat and the sound of the drums behind me was quickly picking up towards my part. I closed my eyes and zoned out to the music as it grew louder around us and smirked to myself. "Punk's gonna have to wait."
****************************
"Thank you Memphis! You were such a great audience!"
A woman let out an unnecessary louder scream than the rest of the crowd and I laughed. Lily has been known for having not only male fans but women would also chase after and fall head over heels for her. I guess I couldn't blame them.
I pulled the guitar strap up over my head and I glanced over to Lily standing in the spotlight, where she was waving at everyone in the small auditorium. Even though she was sporting a black lolita dress, upside crosses for earrings, and lips stained in a dark black lipstick, she was grinning wide in an enchanting smile. Despite her gothic appearance, she acted anything but goth. Her personality was always eccentric and welcoming, like a Kpop fan fell into a goth's closet and couldn't find her way out.
Things finally started to cool down and as security was letting everyone out through the exits, I walked backstage behind the curtains. At first I was eager to grab my things and go, but decided against it and felt like I could relax for a little while. After placing my guitar in its case, I placed it up against the concrete wall and went over to the staff table to sit down in one of the white plastic chairs.
Kicking my feet up on the table, I reclined back and drained the rest of my cigarette before stabbing it underneath the table and flicking it away on the floor.
Shaun, our drummer came in a few minutes later and took the chair in front of me but flipped it around so he could slouch over the back of it. I smiled when I noticed that his entire face except for his black shades was covered in sweat.
"You know Shaun, seeing you out there with those lights on you, I could have easily mistaken you for one of those bright bulbs on stage." I stood up and rubbed his bald head. I regretted it instantly when my hand came back covered in sweat.
"Ha ha very funny." He replied sarcastically. "How 'bout you try playing that hard under that kind of heat." He removed the sunglasses from his eyes. "That's what you get by the way."
I wiped my hand on my jeans while grinning at him. "Whatever. So hey, don't tell Princess, but I'm running out of here in a few minutes to pick up Raymond. Lily always gets pissed when I don't stay behind to help you guys pack up." I teased.
"Need to get who? Oh your brother." Shaun trailed off distractedly while checking the area around him. He stood up once he noticed the cooler behind us and grabbed a bottle of water. He took a swig of it and then shrugged at me. "Why don't you just bail like you always do. I don't know why you even bothered telling me this."
I was ready to say something back but he tossed me a bag of chips and a water bottle as well.
"Here, try one of these chips. Some vendor outside was passing them out for free and he had all kinds of flavors. I had a few earlier but the dude was still there after the performance. I went ahead and grabbed another handful of them for us."
I looked over the small plastic green bag in my hand. The weird black and white text read, "Krispy Krackers." It looked like it was an off brand but when I saw the flavor I practically drooled. "Barbecue Buffalo Chicken? Woah score dude!" I gushed and tore it open. "You know what would go great with these?" I leaned backwards in my chair to grab my dusty brown backpack from next to my guitar. I started digging inside for what I knew could enhance these babies even more.
When I pulled out my small container of jalapeño cheese dipping sauce, I heard Shaun groan. "Sick, I can't believe you still carry that around with you everywhere. They're good without them, you know."
"Hey, cheese is good in all forms, hot and cold. Don't even get me started on those cheese spray cans. But, there is one that tops them all. Jalapeno. Cheddar. Cheese." I explained and poured the gooey goodness into the bag.
I started to tell him all about my love of cheese and how I started making my own dip but was interrupted by Lily stomping into the room. "Oh. Well, I'm surprised you're still here, Sasha Michael Jones."
I felt my face flush with embarrassment and Shaun, who did a spit take, started laughing hysterically. "Your middle name is Michael? What the hell? Why do you have a boy's middle name?"
"You!" I shouted, standing from my chair out of rage and pointed at Shaun. "Shut up and mind your business! And you!" I turned my attention to Lily. "What the hell did I say about using my real name? You're supposed to stick to my stage name like we all agreed on!"
Lily simply looked down at her painted black nails right in front of me like I was boring her. "Why? It's not like you ever stick to my stage name either and you keep calling me "Princess."
"That's because you act like a spoiled princess." I rolled my eyes, challenging her. I never meant it but I do enjoy pushing her buttons and seeing how she reacts.
"What?!" She scoffed and actually stomped one of her ridiculously huge purple wedges on the ground. I held back my laughter and waited for her to continue.
"You know what? No." She took a breath and then fluffed down the skirt of her black dress. "I will be the bigger woman here, there is no need for me to stoop down to your level, Sapphire." She said using air quotation marks for my name and one of my giggles managed to escape.
"What are you guys doing in here anyway?" She asked dryly while shooting me a dirty look. "We need to hurry up and go help my mom start packing the equipment."
"We were just about to chow down on some of these bad boys." I responded while shaking my cheese sauce inside the bag.
She made a heaving sound in disgust. "You and that damn cheese."
"I got a bag of chips for you too if you wanted one Lily." Shaun offered.
"Ugh, no thanks. Don't tell me you got it from that creepy guy outside did you?"
"Uh yeah, why?" He asked, raising a brow.
"It's just...I don't know, that guy seemed so sketchy. My mom said he's been there all day giving out hundreds of those chips. Did anyone even check to see if the guy has a permit to sell? Or if the food is even safe?"
"There's nothing wrong with them Lily, they're delicious. I already had four of them." Shaun laughed as he opened up his fifth. "You're just exaggerating."
Lily made a face. "Whatever, you guys just hurry up so you can help me finish putting everything away and then we can go home."
"About that..." I chimed in.
She closed her eyes and rubbed her temples. "What do you want now Sasha?"
"So, hear me out. I forgot my little brother stayed behind after school today for tutoring, and if it wasn't for your little "encore" that you made us do, we all could have been packed up and going home by now. But now I'm running late to get him. Thanks to you." I finished and smirked at her.
"Wha-?!" She exclaimed, her eyes going wide but then she waved me off. "Oh whatever. What else is new? Go then."
Trying hard to suppress myself from laughing, I pretended to curtsey. "Oh thank you my Princess. You're too kind."
Shaun appreciated my joke by letting out another chuckle but I received a hard kick in the ass from Lily.
******
"Alright you guys, I'm heading out."
I ended up staying behind an extra 30 minutes after all to help them out with the equipment. It turns out that Lily's mom, who was also our manager, never showed up after the concert like she usually does so we could load all the instruments into her huge SUV.
So with the help of the owner of the place, we were able to work something out and they allowed us to store all of our stuff here for the night. My guitar, however, always stayed with me.
I threw my brown backpack over my shoulder and picked up my guitar case, ready to leave.
My band members started to wave goodbye but we all jumped when the auditorium was suddenly filled with terrified blood curdling screams.
We all rushed out to the middle of the stage in panic to see what was going on.
A handful of our fans from the concert had lingered but were suddenly fighting each other like they were out for blood. Others were either running away outside by people chasing them or bent over on the floor vomiting uncontrollably.
"What the hell is wrong with them?!" I asked. This was ridiculous! I hated seeing people fight each other like senseless apes in public. And I bet it was over something stupid too, like knocking over someone's beer or stepping on someone's new shoes.
Lily shook her head frantically and took a step back on the stage, her eyes were wide and still glued to the scene in front of her. "I-I don't know but this seems a lot more violent than how it was in Nashville!"
"Hey! HEY! Calm the hell down!" I screamed while cupping my hands around my mouth to project my voice.
No one stopped or even gave me a single glance. I rolled my eyes before dashing backstage to find a microphone to use.
"Where is security? They should have been out here taking care of this by now." Lily asked, coming up behind me.
"Actually," I looked up and spun around to face her. "Where the fuck is our sound techs, the owners or hell, even our manager?"
"I don't know about the staff, but my mom said she was doing overtime at her other job today but this is even later than usual."Lily trailed off.
"Have you tried calling her?" I asked?
She blushed. "No...I accidentally left my phone at home tonight before the concert."
"Great." I replied sarcastically.
"Uh Guys?" Shaun called out. "I think you should get out here."
We both ran out to him and looked over at the crowd.
"Oh God!" Lily cried, covering her mouth.
I couldn't tear my eyes away from what I was seeing.
The fighting had turned into a bloodbath.
In one corner of the room a woman in a green dress was screaming as someone sank her teeth into her shoulder and blood spilled out from the bite. More people grabbed onto her and they didn't stop biting, even though she was kicking and thrashing her body around to fend them off. I wanted to faint when I saw the people attacking her pull back with chunks of her skin inside their mouths with dark red blood dripping down their chins. They kept chewing and biting whatever exposed flesh they managed to get their teeth on until her whole body was covered in bite marks..
"What the fuck?! Are they on some kind of drugs?!" I cried out and covered my mouth to stop myself from puking.
When I didn't receive a response from my peers, I tore my eyes away to find that they were just as stunned as I was.
When I turned back at the crowd again, I saw a security guard running for his life towards the exit only to be forced down to the ground by five of our fans from outside the door. They began feasting on his body, almost fighting over him like a pack of starving wolves. I felt bile rise up to my stomach and I finally turned away.
"I think I'm going to be sick...we need to get the hell out of here now!"
I tried to run back to the staff area but I slid to a stop when I heard a low ominous growl coming from over there.
The owner of the auditorium came crawling out of his office with one of his legs gnawed off. He raised his hand up and reached out for us. I couldn't move. I was frozen. I saw that the skin of his entire arm was practically gnawed to the bone.
"P-Please...you gotta help...me..." He managed to get out. His voice was hoarse and he was barely clinging to life before his body suddenly started spasming awkwardly. He started gurgling, grasping onto his throat for air. The white of his eye turned a shade of yellow before he dropped like a sack of potatoes on the stage. A pool of blood formed around his head and his body went still.
"Lily, Shaun! Get off the stage now! Get our cars!" I screamed and ran back the other way towards the emergency exit.
Shaun got the memo, the bastard even sped past me to the door and shoved it open, setting off the alarm in the entire building.
I slowed down to catch my breath at the doorway and glanced around the dimly lit room to see if Lily caught up. But I couldn't spot her anywhere.
"Lily?" I called out.
I pressed open the door and looked around the dirty alley to find Shaun sprinting through, heading towards the parking lot.
"Shaun! Wait! What about Lily?!" I called out to him.
"I don't care!" He yelled back. "You guys are on your own!" He rounded the corner, almost slipping on his own sneakers before he disappeared into the night.
"Oh why don't you grow a pair Shaun?!" I screamed after him then turned back inside to search for Lily.
I found her still on the stage and she dropped to her knees on the wooden floorboards, frozen in fear.
"Damn it Lily!" I dropped my bag and used my guitar case to hold open the door and then ran back towards the stage, shoving people out of the way that tried to grab me. When I went to hop up onto the stairs, I was suddenly yanked back by a fan who managed to grab the back of my tank top.
"What the hell man! Back off!"
I reacted impatiently and kicked the guy as hard as I could in his chest. He released me and toppled back into a mosh pit of those freaks.
"Lily! COME ON! HURRY! WE HAVE TO GO!" I yelled as I hopped up the small flight of stairs to the stage.
She didn't respond. Her eyes were wide as dinner plates and glued to the corpse in front of her. I reached under her arm to yank her up but she wouldn't budge at all.
"She's not gonna like this, but she's not giving me any other choice." Retracting my hand back as far as I could, I landed a hard bitch slap to Lily's face, knocking her curls back and even stinging my own hand.
She blinked several times before cupping her cheek and then her eyes turned dark and glared at me. "What the fuck was that for?!" She hissed.
"Get. The. Fuck. Up. Now!" I growled through my teeth. I grabbed her by the arm and forced her up on her feet.
I led her over to the exit with me, keeping her close but stopped for a moment to quickly grab my things before bolting out the door.
"Wait where's Shaun?" Lily asked.
"The bastard abandoned us. We need to get to my truck, get my brother and then find out what's going on here. Or at least get the police involved in this shit."
As on cue, my ringtone went off inside my pocket and I pulled it out to answer it. "Ray? Yeah. Shit! What?! Really?! Yeah, no it's happening over here too. Just whatever you do, don't go outside and find a safe hiding place for now. I'll get to you as soon as I can."

Shrike
He wants to play the latest and greatest VRMMORPG game, but he can't muster up the cash for the fancy new proprietary hardware and membership license. After months of saving up cash and arduous work, he has built a behemoth of a machine relying almost entirely on seedy old technology and a DIY guide by some dude named "Jimmy Bob." This is the story of his entry into the game. This is also a story of intrigue, exploration, introspection, batshit crazy game design, and unintended but entirely predictable consequences. This is G.C.O. Undergoing a total re-write, mostly because I think things were too rushed rather than any content or direction changes. If you are one of the few who tried Shrike when it was briefly updating, consider giving it another shot. Of no relation to either The Great Crusade or the recent (in 2017 lol) Shrike book for Warhammer by Games Workshop. All similarities in these cases are superficial; please don't sue me. War, Honor and Vengeance
In a world where there is no right or wrong, justice and injustice, good or evil, it is the world where only the strong persists while the weak slaves. A world filled with lies, treachery and betrayal. There is no two way. Only one way. One way to either Hell or Heavens. Some call it Destiny, some call it Providence, others call it The God’s Will. But I call it Fate. My arch-nemesis. Something so invisible, out-of-reach and strong, that no matter how much you fight, there seems no end. But tell me, will you succumb to your fate, as others rise on it. Tell me, will you let your family, your children, your wives be slaughtered and slaved on this so-called Fate. No. War. In a world where lives are nothing more than livestock, either you rise up and rule in passion or go down in flames. Will you stay mum and accept this so-called Fate and be slaughtered by your enemies, or will you rise up. Wealth, fame, fortune, desires are not ever-lasting. Only War is eternal. Vengeance. In a world where with no rights and wrong, the weak would be preyed upon while the strong will wreak havoc. But, will you accept your fate of being weak…. No. You rise up and exact revenge for all the wrongs done to you. You rise for Vengeance. Honor. Honor… something which runs deep within our blood, but yet forgotten in dust. Something, so intangible, so frail, yet so over-powering. Villains justify it as useless, Lords deem it as unnecessary and Kings mock it as worthless, but yet, it flows ever so deeply within. Deeply… like our thirst of wealth and power. Without this so-called useless, worthless and unnecessary piece of intangible force, we, as Knights are nothing but mere foot soldiers. So, rise up! Rise Up! RISE UP, my Knights. For War! For Vengeance! For Honor!!!! ………………………………………………………… The release rates are going to be a bit sloppy with my college entrance exams upcoming, so please don’t be angry, my avid readers. I also want to inform you that my college entrance exams are coming up and so, I wont be making regular updates like Im doing now and the chapters will generally be around 1.5-1.7k. Second Wind, legend of Pandemonium (Finished/Incomplete)
The developers of the worlds leading VRMMORPG Edge Online have decided to shut down its servers after over a decade. Shugireth Darkstar, the leader of Pandemonium, Edge Online's top guild, suffers from a deadly disease and his end is near. He hasn't left his VR pod for 5 years, as the medical nanodroids at the hospital takes care of him. Without Edge, he will die, because his physical body has already been all but destroyed by the sickness. Seeing no light at the end of the tunnel, Shugireth Darkstar, the Master of Pandemonium, stubbornly stays behind as the servers shut down... If that was all, we could end this story right here. However, that was only the beginning of the legend of pandemonium. The prelude to the movement, if you will. Shall we see what happens next? -------------- Some notes from Me (The author, gasp surprise): I first wrote this (100k) as an experiment. I saw the advice about having foils for overpowered MCs, and I watched quite a few lectures on writing. I wanted to test things out for myself and see if I could carry a story through other ways than only relying on physical conflict like some thrillers do. Thus this might lean a bit towards slice of life with a romance subplot, but I don't want to give my story away so read it if u want to know more. This was basically never intended for anyone else's eyes but my own, and written to explore writing as a process. This wasn't my attempt at writing a good book, but it turned into something that I think might interest some people, so I decided to pop it up here. It is slightly old so my style and writing skills have advanced considerably since I first started this thing. Having said that, I think it's pretty readable, but I am very interested in how other people will receive this. Please feel free to criticize it and just in general shoot me some feedback on what you think. It contains light Litrpg elements, not heavy table spam, it's just the basis of the world. Although I like that sort of thing, this was written before I even knew of Royalroad and hadn't considered litrpg much. Some of you may recognize that it was slightly inspired by Overlord. Also, the Tags for sexual content and traumatizing content are there as a precaution on all of my stories pretty much, even if my story does not contain any of that at the moment. I can't really know what the future will bring, but in the case of this story I do know a little bit, since I wrote 100k words before posting it here. And I just posted it on a whim because I figured some readers on Royalroad might enjoy this story.
