《In My Head》Chapter 7 Matters of Law

I sat in front of the ancient old man, looking him dead in the eye. "What exactly do you know?"
"Well, I know that you're a lesser vampire, I know that you're only a few hours old, and I know that you've no name. Ah, I also know that you were not born here."
"That's... a good bit. You're not going to attack me?"
"No, being an undead isn't in and of itself a crime, and it would appear that you haven't gone on any sort of spree just yet, so I've no reason to."
"So I'm safe in this city then?"
"No. While being an undead isn't a crime one cannot kill that which isn't alive can they?"
That statement made my whole body clench. While he might not elect to harm me, he also wouldn't act to protect me, and any and all could just kill me without any major legal issues. Staying hidden would remain paramount.
"What do you want to keep what you know to yourself?" It wasn't a theoretical question, he really could do just about whatever he pleased here.
"I do not generally share the private details of victims with others. There is nothing more required than that. Now, I do wish to know how you came to be in this place and what has happened since."
So I told him my story. Well, most of it. I did leave out the voices talking to me and giving me advice in my head, I also left out the little fact that I wanted to eat Kale at the nearest possible junction. No real need to give him those little tidbits. Finally I helpfully forgot to mention messing around with his spell circle.
"That's most of it then, any specifics you would like more on?"

"Hmm. It does seem that you were summoned here without consent of permission. Do you have any magical capabilities?"
"I've got a few minor spells."
He nodded, but didn't ask me to go any further on that. "I see. Then you should know that under our laws you are entitled to recompense for the accident in which you were involved. While your unlife may not have much value due to precedent, all sapient beings are entitled to recompense for wrongs made against them."
"So somebody could kill me if they felt like, but if they just beat me up I can what... sue them?"
"Yes."
"That's incredibly stupid. It doesn't even make logical sense."
"Ah my dear, you see my job isn't to enforce sense, it is to enforce the law. Sadly the two do not always meet. I could go into details about poorly written statutes and seemingly conflicting legal precedent, but do you really care?"
"Mmm, no, not as such. I am entitled to something for being brought here though?"
"You are, if the story you told me matches up with those I get from the others. Particularly you may seek recompense from young mister Kale, as he cast the spell which brought you here, and the Magical Institute of Evonia. The latter because they've been given guardianship over him, and therefore are 'supposed' to keep him from doing things like this. Unsupervised casting is exceptionally dangerous to those not trained in proper methods."
"What will I receive?"
"Most likely money. Though if the Magus knows of your spellcasting abilities he may offer you a place at the school under their standard tuition. It is far cheaper to take on a new student than it is to pay a large sum of cash."

"I see."
"If you've no other questions then miss, then please step out and send in mister Kale. Ah, and if it's not too much trouble, do try to think of a name for yourself, it will make filling out the necessary paperwork quite a bit easier for myself."
I nodded and made my way out to the hall. Kale still looked like he'd fallen down a flight of stairs and by the look the other two were giving him I guessed that he wouldn't be offered any kind of special healing.
"The Lawspeaker said he would see Kale next." I told them as I came out. There were a number of nice seats in the hall and I tiredly flopped down on one with a 'Ooof' closing my eyes and trying to think of what I wanted next.

Tim the Engineer
Summoned against his will to a world of swords and magic, an engineering student struggles to find a way home under the shadow of a world devouring threat. ***************************** Updates: 5/13/19: Revisions to several chapters for clarity, grammar, and style. 4/29/19: A short side story and artwork has been added to the blog. 4/8/19: A Side Story has been updated on my new blog (every writer is required to have one). https://talesfromliahar.wordpress.com/ ***************************** “The summoning scenarios are broken down into groups of ten.” Emi Ito stated. “Don’t, don’t you dare say another word.” Muttered Genzo Uchida. His eyes had turned bloodshot and his hands shook with rage. “The first thirty…” “Shut up!” Genzo bellowed “How dare you help these disrespectful gaijin?” Flecks of spit and madness flew from his face, his fist raised ready to strike. But Emi did not flinch, instead she was about ready to continue when Yuma Takeuchi interrupted her. “Uchida, please,” her sweet sounding words could melt ice. “I think we will have a better chance of getting home if we all work together.” When she glanced up with her sleepy looking eyes at Genzo Uchida he deflated visibly. “Were not getting home.” Uchida said coolly. “Group summoning, large, that puts us in the 60 series. No one came to greet us after five minutes of arrival. That leaves scenarios 68 and 69. In scenario 68 there is something that binds the large group together; they are all classmates or a single family. But thanks to the gaijin” he spit out the word “I think we are scenario 69 with no way home.” Ikko Inoue’s eyes went wide, while Katsukno and Hayata started muttering to themselves. Tim took on a serious look and rubbed his scruffy chin. Emi maintained her stoic expression while trying to find something to refute. McKenzie glanced at Randall and giggled. Randall took the prompting of his teammate and followed up by approaching Genzo. “Uh, so we are in a sixty-nine?” “Yes.” Replied Genzo with the seriousness of someone who’s life was about to end. McKenzie covered her mouth and snickered. “You and me, were stuck in a sixty-nine situation?” Randall pushed with a grin. “Yes, we are all stuck in a sixty-nine scenario together!” Genzo retorted in anger. McKenzie fell on her butt laughing. “What the hell is so funny?” Demanded Genzo, whose face had turned red. “It’s a problem with the automatic translation.” Retorted Tim. Randall, who seemed unable to quit started in again “So, about this sixty-ni…” Genzo interrupted Randall with a swift punch to the face. But, because of their height difference it was a bit of an uppercut that left Randall rattled. Tim and Ikko moved to step in between the two, but Genzo showed no further hostility. Instead he just stared at his clenched fist with such intensity it grabbed the attention of the room. “I unlocked a skill.” He said bluntly. ***************************** This is not a light novel, but people who like light novels should enjoy the themes of this book. ***************************** A Map of the Region

Crucible - A Lost Dungeons Tale
All stories must begin somewhere, this one starts with the creation of the universe. What follows is a tale of chaos and order, of gods and monsters, of creation and destruction. The birth of a universe is a tumultuous journey, different entities working with opposing ideals, cooperation giving way to frustration and jealousy. It is in that dangerous concoction of emotions that the god of monsters created the first dungeon core. Forged in a crucible of dedication and desire, the first core held potential, the likes of which could surpass even the civilised mortal races. Unfortunately it was not meant to be, the core was lost in a tragic accident and its creator thought it to have been destroyed. Over one-thousand years later, the core reformed inside an extinct volcano. In time it would grow enough to learn and learn enough to grow. This is the story of the first dungeon core. Crucible, the lost dungeon core. Note: Story updates every hiatus*. *I appologise for the delay.
