《Library Magic》Chapter Five: Growing Up - Part 2
Advertisement
Four years have passed. I'm almost 5 years old, the age at which magic practice can be started. The reason being it's dangerous to practice magic as an infant and not because it cannot be done. I heard some gossips from my mom and the maids, that a person tried to circulate mana inside the body of their child and the child exploded... Well, can't have that can we? Such are my thoughts on the matter.
It's finally time for my fifth birthday. My father gave me a magic stone necklace for my birthday, it improves the absorption of mana from the surrounding. My mom gave me fancy looking clothes, while Meria-san gave me a Storage ring, it can store small items inside it in limited quantities. The stored items could be as big as a sword and as many as 50 of it. It's pretty useful in many ways.
Now it's time to test my magic. Father said that you need to will the power of mana around you and inside of you to combine and create the desired magic you need. I tried to think of summoning a book, but no matter how many times I did it, I always fail. I also tried the Dark attribute spell of our family 【Black Ball】, which throws a sphere of black smoke towards the enemies to momentarily take away their eyesight. I imagined a ball of black smoke gathering in my hands and it worked! There is now a 【Black Ball】 in my hands. I throw it at a nearby tree, and the whole tree got completely shrouded with black colored mist-like smoke.
Now to think of a way to activate my magic. Now that I think about it, that God said 'POWER' and not 'MAGIC', so maybe I should forego mana usage and instead just focus on summoning a book. I closed my eyes, held out my right hand and thought about summoning a book, but again nothing appears. I opened my eyes and what I see isn't my backyard, but a dark room with a candle in a candle holder on the table beside me as it's only light source. It's a scene where you would think that there is something in the room besides you, in short a creepy goosebumps inducing scene. There are other things placed on the table too, such as, a big sealed book, a bookmark, an hourglass, a small golden bell and a pair glasses.

"Wait, isn't this my glasses from my past life? How is it here?"
Meh, whatever. That God must be playing some sort of prank on me. I need to explore the room manually because I can't see very far into the room with the limited light source. I tried to grab the candle holder, but my vision suddenly blacked out. What I see around me when my vision is restored, is not the room I was in previously but scenery of my backyard. And by the looks of the falling leaves, it seems that the power stops time significantly when I activate it or at the very least it slows down time, as I remember the leaves in a similar position before I closed my eyes.
But, why did I return here? Suddenly I feel light headed for some reason. Ah, my mana must have depleted. That must be the reason. And when I think hard about that power, a certain word surfaces in my mind, 【Library Magic】. Looks like I only need to think about it for the power to activate. But first, I need to train my overall mana capacity, because it seems like the mana it consumes is only from my body, unlike magic, that consumes both the mana of the body as well as the mana of the world. It looks like it will be a while before I could utilize it.
"Well, no need to think about that. It is almost time for lunch!"
I wiped the sweat off my face when suddenly I hit "that". Now that I think about it, why am I suddenly wearing glasses? I take it off and it is exactly same as the ones in the library. I don't remember wearing it, though? Oh well, I guess it's a bonus for me since I didn't know whether I could take it out of that dimension or not. My head is full of such thoughts as I went back to the house to eat lunch with my family.

The Way Ahead
What do you do when you don't fit in? Edwin never really felt many connections to other people, but as a physics student, that was fine. He didn't really need it, anyway. He was content to peel back the mysteries of the universe... not that there were many left to find. Modern-day research was just too well-established, too well-trodden for any single enthusiast to make any significant headway. But that doesn't apply to other worlds. Not ones where magic and Skills run rampant, where well-defined roles and Classes dominate much of society with little room for novel experimentation from its residents. That kind of world would be perfect for an overeager, newly-minted Alchemist to make his mark. Things are never that easy, though. The Way Ahead is a very slice-of-life story following the story of someone trying to find his place in a world that doesn't know what to do with him. Expect lots of science, lots of alchemy, a few sarcastic quips by the System, and lots of exploration involving the world, self-discovery, and above all, science. After all, further research is always required. Updates every other day at 9 AM PST. Congratulations! For writing a story during the month of November, you have unlocked the Royal Road Writathon Participant path!
