《The Best General's Escape Plan》Chapter 12 - Being a good soldier

In a certain mountain in the Kingdom of Numero. A group of Humans can be seen fighting a group of Ogres.

Just looking at the numbers, it's quite obvious that the Humans outnumbered the Ogres, 6 to 1 in favor of the humans.

Just basing on that, the situation might be misunderstood and conclude that the humans are obviously gonna win with the numbers and all though the reality, is actually quite different.

What many people don't know is that Ogres unlike humans are naturally born strong that even a young ogre could easily beat an adult human.

With their height and strength to their advantage. Crushing a single human is just an easy task for them.

Humans on the other hand are also naturally scared of what's stronger than them, thus even just seeing Ogres on a battlefield is quite demoralizing.

Opposite of what most people might imagine. The fight is actually more in favor of the Ogres.

All to more that they are actually fighting Ogres that are actually on the class of Warriors.

It is said that an Ogre Warrior is equal to 5 human fighters. With their clubs as a weapon, they could even kill a human with just a single bash.

Going by this comparison alone, the fight now looks more equal considering that the humans do actually outnumber the ogres by even more than one per ogre that they are fighting.

But the fact is, only 10 of the humans are actually trained fighters, which means that the advantage now goes back again in the favor of the Ogres.

Though that is not to say that Humans don't stand a chance.

In the millennia of Humans living together with Ogres, the history of Humans defeating Ogres cannot also be ignored.

An example of such a feat is in the case of Ogres attacking Human settlements.

Although it's more common for Ogres to destroy a village of Humans than the latter, the cases of Humans winning and repelling their attacks are more numerous.

White chose to fight for this exact reason. He knows that the possibility of them winning is not low and that they could win with just a right and good strategy.

This group of humans that are fighting the Ogres are amongst the people of the caravan that White joined, which was assembled to fight the Ogres.

"Don't throw the stones at random. Throw it simultaneously. Archers, target the eyes if they removed their hands."

The people who hold the rocks heed the order of White and continued throwing rocks in a simultaneous way.

Although weren't trained, they were able to adapt easily when other people started throwing rocks after they saw others finished throwing theirs.

The people who weren't able to get it at first just copied those who were successful and all of them are now doing it almost perfectly.

The Archers, on the other hand, didn't even use much of their arrows and only used theirs once they saw the ogres remove their hands from their eyes.

They aren't part of the guards but are part of the merchants who are somehow experienced in using bows due to their life traveling throughout the Kingdom.

The ogres on the other hand who only have their one-piece clothing can only protect so much of their body that they have no choice but to cover themselves with their hands.

The arrows aren't exactly hitting their head perfectly but the Ogres being wary kept their eyes covered in fear of getting shot that might blind them.

As they weren't able to see their enemies clearly as they have to cover their eyes from the archers, they decided to use a tactic which is known to be effective against other creatures they know all to more humans who likes to group up in defense.

With these tactics in mind. They didn't even need to look as their enemy are all just on their front. Even if the humans dodge, they would still be inside of their perimeter so it will be easy for them now to destroy the group of White.

"They are charging!"

""Oooooohhhhh!""

Suddenly, the Ogres started running in their direction, looking like they are trying to ram them and crush them once they get in contact.

"Spears! Ready the spears!"

When Black saw the Ogres charged, he reacted immediately by instructing the soldiers with him on the front to ready up their spears.

As the guard was readying up their spears. The Ogres continued to close in on the group of Black, ready to clash their body onto them.

This charge normally kills every living creatures on their path. Animals or Humans, no one can defend from a charge of Ogres normally.

But when the ogres felt their first contact towards their enemy. Instead of feeling the flesh of their enemies, they were instead stabbed by the wooden spears that are held by the humans.

'Charge, idiots! Let's see if you can win when the world is on our side.'

Normally, a charge from an ogre could destroy any defensive formation there is. Even the wall of spears that are made to counter a cavalry charge wouldn't stand a chance against them.

So instead, they decided to use the power of the ground. A power, not even the Ogres could overpower.

With this tactic, even a charge from an ogre has no use as they would be fighting the force of the ground instead.

They just need to hold and guide their spears toward the direction of their enemy and all their work is done. And because the ogres weren't able to see who or what they are charging against, they didn't even know that they were just doing the job for their enemy.

Because of the momentum of the charge, the spears pierced their legs and stomachs easily.

Out of all 5 ogres who charged, 2 of them fell to the ground while three of them managed to stay up and continue fighting while spears are stuck on their legs and stomach.

One of the spearmen though was caught up with one of the Ogres who fell. He wasn't exactly dead, but as he was being crushed by the ogre's weight, and from the fall. He fell unconscious and is out of the fight.

"What are you doing just standing there. Continue throwing stones."

Because of the sudden charge, the people who were throwing rocks stopped on their tracks, weak on their knees. But because they were able to easily repel that said charge, White was easily able to bring them also back again to the fight.

Black on the other hand immediately ran towards one of the downed ogres and stabbed it in the head.

"Stab the other ogre!"

And so Black ordered.

Copying what Black did, the other people also run towards the other ogres and stab them in the head.

The two ogres are already not moving so many thought they are already dead. Black though not wanting to have the risk secured the kill.

From the initial 5 ogres that they are fighting, only three now are left alive.

Although the Ogres saw their comrades being killed by the humans.

They were still shocked by the sudden happening and the fact that the archers are continuing to shoot at them. They were left on their tracks and weren't able to do anything.

With just 1 casualty to the side of Humans. It could be said that this is going well for them.

The stone-throwers continued to pepper the Ogres and were able to make them keep backing up and are now back to their initial position.

Some of the people on the front though suddenly got confident and have thought of attacking the enemy.

"Back up, you stupid kids!"

Though Black warned them, it seems that he was already late. As they were already focused on attacking that although they heard him, they didn't exactly understand what he said.

They continued to close in on the ogres and as they do, the stone-throwers immediately stopped throwing their rocks to not hit them.

"Wahhh!!!"

The Ogres noticing both the screams and sudden stop of the stone-throwing, they look at what's happening saw that the humans are charging at them.

The archers, on the other hand, seeing how the ogres tried to look at them fired their arrows at their heads causing the ogres to again, cover their heads. Because of the height of the Ogres, they can target their head without worrying about their allies, unlike the stone-throwers who isn't even trained at it.

Ogres blinded again on the other hand though, already gained the knowledge and information they need and was able to react immediately.

The three of them swing their weapons. Swinging wildly hoping that their weapons connect to their attacking enemy.

"Look out!"

One of the attacking humans wasn't able to react and through that, his arms were hit by the club of the ogre.

"Aaaahhh!"

He screamed at his now bashed arms as he fall on the ground looking at the Ogres that is randomly swinging their clubs.

"You idiots, get back here now!"

As shouted by Black, they were now able to clearly hear him and run back toward their initial position even pulling the guy who was hit.

The initial confidence that they gain when they repelled their charge is now gone and back to how it's used to be when the first time they met the ogre.

It was low, barely enough to make them fight.

"Go back to the caravan! You're useless here."

As the injured guy hears what Black has said to him. He depressingly heeds his order and goes back to the caravan while still holding onto his arms that are still screaming in pain.

The other soldiers on the other hand that stayed looking at Black from time to time, waiting for his orders to finally defeat the Ogres.

They learned their lesson the hard way which is to not attack just because they thought they could win even without the order coming from their leader.

But instead of ordering them though, Black just ignored them and asked White instead.

"Hoy White Kid! What do we do now?"

This sudden action confused them as it seemed to them that Black have enough knowledge to defeat the Ogres on his own.

But from the looks of it, it looks like Black is asking White because he doesn't know what to do next.

Contrary to what they thought though, if Black wanted to, he can really think of a way to win the battle.

Why he asked White instead is because White is the real leader leading the fight against the Ogres and not him. So who they need to ask is White.

Although White was indeed able to increase their trust earlier in the village, the amount of trust given to Black is more than what they thought of White.

With Black winning the fight between the two of them and the fact that he was the reason why they were able to repel the Ogres. The thought in their minds that Black is the superior leader is starting to form.

Although White is the reason why Black is even there in the first place, soldiers in battle won't even be able to notice that as they were more likely to focus on who led them to glory rather than the person who guided them to victory.

In the first place. They met Black and White at the same time when they join the caravan.

So Black asking White is to create the image that it's not him who they should be looking at but White who is on their back.

As he is the real leader of them, while Black is only just an adjutant.

"Black, slow charge!"

"Eh? Yes!"

With the sudden order coming from White. Black was taken aback by it. He didn't think that they would actually charge up the Ogres again as he is thinking that White is going to just make the Ogres retreat after the fact they just lost 1 soldier because of the same tactic.

On his head, they were even lucky enough to down 2 ogres. Charging them again is already unneeded as it was quite obvious that Ogres will retreat if they keep pressuring them.

Though thinking about it again, it might have been his tactic in the first place that made the Ogres attack them knowing exactly what his reaction would be.

But no matter the case, as a man of the military and a person who knows White. He didn't question White's order and follow it like how a soldier would follow his commander's orders.

"Are you serious?"

"We're charging those ogres again?!"

"Just follow orders you fools!"

When White shouted at them, they immediately look at Black who wasn't even looking at White anymore and is already looking at the Ogres.

"You idiots, we're not charging."

When he saw his fellow soldiers on the front, scared to follow White's order. He can't help but feel disappointed.

'They aren't exactly trained like me but this is really giving me a headache. Did they just forget how we just killed two of those? Did they not know how great of a feat that is?"

Though as a past General of one of the greatest military in the world. He does know how to command, even hooligans.

"We're just walking."

As he says that. He started walking towards their enemy with the tip of his wooden spear pointed at the enemy.

It's to lead them by the front.

He walks slow but vigilant. Although he said they were just going to walk. His speed is even slower than that of a normal walk.

He slowly marches towards the enemy.

The guards who saw him, although scared, followed his order and walked towards their enemy the same way as he did.

"Archers, fire on the hand holding their weapons."

As White ordered, the archers started targeting the three ogre's hands.

One arrow hit the hands of one of the ogres, released his weapon instinctively.

The others thought didn't as they were afraid of hitting their comrades who are already closing on their enemy.

As some Ogres notice the change of the target of the archers, they look at their opponent again.

What they saw is humans, walking towards them slowly but organized. Spears pointed at them, faces that say they are there to kill

Seeing as how the humans started to charge again, they were left wondering if they forgot how what happened earlier.

Through this sudden question in their mind though, they were suddenly struck by an unknown fear.

'Could we even defeat these Humans?'

It might be normal for other people to think that doing the same tactic as what they did earlier should have done the trick and repel their attack but seeing the humans attacking them once again seemingly completely unfazed about what happened earlier just made them think otherwise.

They also remembered at the same time how they easily lost two of their mates which made them really wary of the humans who are renewing their attack.

'Would they even attack again if they don't know how to counter us?'

One Ogre thinking this, step back one step at a time before he saw another Ogre who was already on his back ready to retreat.

"Sorry, but you can't retreat here after what you've done!"

'Well, it's not like I care about them anyway but it helps so it's all good!'

"Archers, drop down from your wagons!"

As he ordered, the archers started to leave the wagons. Once they got outside they saw people waiting on the backside, readying to push the wagons they just left.

"Push!"

Exactly three wagons were pushed toward the direction of the Ogres.

"Dodge you idiots!"

White as he continued to ride the wagons, shouted at the people at the front who were shocked by what's happening.

They immediately tried to fit through the gaps of the caravans and some even go to the side of the mountain where the wagons can't go just to not be hit by the wagons.

Black and the people on the front though last to see this was able to easily react. Some drop down to go under the wagons and some just stayed on the gaps of the wagons.

One ogre who didn't turn back saw this and immediately turned back to run towards the corner where he could be safe from the wagons.

"Wooohhh!"

White on the other hand seeing how near the wagons are towards their target immediately ready up his wooden spear.

He pointed the tip of it on the Ogres, ready to pierce them when the wagons made contact with the Ogres.

As the three wagons hit the three ogres near a cliff. One of them fall off while two Ogres who were late to turn back just fall on the ground when their legs were hit by the wagons and the spear of White which pierced one of them in the neck.

White seeing how one other Ogre didn't fall, immediately draw his sword, jumped from the wagon to the fallen ogre, and stabbed it at its heart.

"Sorry, but I can't have you running back to your village."

With the battle over, White climbed up to the wagon again and raised his sword full of the Ogres' blood.

"Waaahhhhh!!!!"

When he shouted the cry of victory, every single one of the people who saw him including Black and Isa also shouted their cry without worry.
