《I Reincarnated as the Queen, Now What?》Chapter 18B

After breakfast, Rufina sat at the desk getting out charcoal sticks and paper, soon starting to sketch. First a simple bar scale, a smallish one, with a capacity of five kilos, then a large one with a capacity of 150 kilos, with a resolution of ten grams.

The plan for the bowls is easy, it was a ball shape, with a lid for the top and a flattened bottom.

The grain sizer, though a simple design, was more detailed so took longer. It is a box holding three grids of decreasing size set above a bucket. As the berries descended the stack of grids the smallest would continue to pass though, the three largest sizes would be diverted via chutes to buckets. It should sort all the different grains raised on the island, wheat, barley, oats and rye.

Next is the food dryer, a cabinet with mesh shelves a few cm apart. One side has a raised channel, painted black with a black cloth covering it. The bottom of the this channel is open to the outside. The top opens to the cabinet. There is another channel on the opposite side, the bottom open to the cabinet, the top open to the outside through a hole in the roof. When in use the black channel will be facing the sun, heating the air inside which will rise to the top of the cabinet. As the warm air drys the moist food in the cabinet, it will cool, sinking to the bottom. Once it reaches the bottom it will flow up the other channel exiting the cabinet, taking the moisture with it.

Rufina is finished in a little more than an hour. She places the sketches in a document case which she places in the basket, with some blank sheets of paper and a few charcoal sticks. Leaving the basket on the desk, she goes out to the atrium. She spotted Eliza busy at the small table, drawing card faces. Watching her until she pauses before beginning a new card, "How is it going, Eliza?"

"Good, your majesty. I have through the eights done, I'm about to start on the nines."

"Very good. How are you feeling today? I didn't get to ask yesterday, is why I'm asking."

"I'm very happy, I'm in love and he loves me."

"I'm glad for you. Have you seen, Sophia or Emi lately?"

"No, when I draw, the house could fall down and I wouldn't notice, sorry."

"That's alright, I'll look around for them."

As Eliza pickup her charcoal stick Rufina walked to the kitchen, intending to ask Tilly if she had seen Sophia or Emi. When she got there Emi was there talking to Tilly. Giving her a hug from behind while whispering in her ear, "Hello love, you ready to go to town?"

"Yes, I am. Where are we going today?"

"I need to check on the cleaner, order some bowls, a grain sorter and a couple of scales. Also need to check on the inlet as I believe Alton promised to have the poles delivered today. And I would like see how the threshing is going."

"Just the two of us?"

"No, I think Sophia wanted to come also and Kalvin of course. Where is Sophia, by the way?"

"She and Helen went up stairs right after breakfast with a pitcher of hot water," put in Tilly.

"Alright, Emi if you go alert Kalvin we are almost ready to go and will need a total of four horses today, I will find Sophia. Tilly, we may be late for dinner but will attempt to get here in time." As I started out the door, I thought loudly, 'Sophia, are you ready to go?'. As I climbed the stairs heading to her rooms I went slowly, because if they were doing what I think they are, I want to give them time to dress. When I get to her door, I knock loudly. Then wait. And wait. I was about to knock again when the door opened revealing both Helen and Sophia.

"Are you ready to go to town?" I inquired.

"When you are, your majesty. Will we be swimming today?"

"I don't think we will have time, I need to start writing the instructions for Go today. We probably won't go swimming for a few days, sadly."

"Too bad, I enjoy doing that."

"I do, too," Helen puts in.

"When we get the instructions done, we can take an afternoon off at the beach. Though it wouldn't be all fun and games, because the ponds need to be filled."

"Maybe we can have another mud fight." Helen says with a grin.

"That was fun wasn't it." We had walk down stairs to wait for Emi but she is waiting for us by the study door, basket in hand.

"Kalvin will have the horses ready in a few more minutes, he had three ready, he needed to get one more. Or should he get one more?"

"No, we can drop Helen off at her shop first thing, then visit Clara, who should have a few anklets done for us by now. Then go to the craftsmen." We were changing to our boots in the garden now. "How many coin do we have Emi?"

"One moment, your majesty." Emi dug the coin purse out of the basket, then opened it, pouring the coins in her hand. I see several gold coins, some silver but mostly copper. I hold the purse while she counts the coins as she replaces them. "Three gold, 5 silver, 33 copper, your majesty."

"Thank you Emi. That should be enough for today. Everyone ready?" They all nod. We head out the gate to where Kalvin is waiting with the horses.

"Good morning Kalvin." I greet him.

"Good morning, your majesty. Where are we off to today?"

"First to drop Helen off at her shop, then the shop of Clara, then Daniel and the other wood crafters and the blacksmith. Finally we will make a trip out to the inlet to see if Alton has delivered the posts for the water lift. Helen, you can ride with Sophia." We mounted, with Kalvin assisting Helen to mount behind Sophia. We then slowly ride to town, chatting and laughing.

When we drop Helen off I ask her, "Will you be at dinner?"

"No, I'll stay here until just before supper. I have so much to do."

"Alright, would you like for Kalvin to come get you? You would do that wouldn't you Kalvin?"

"Yes, your majesty, I could do that for Mistress Helen."

"Thank you, Kalvin." both Helen and I say. Then we grin at each other.

"Alright, to Clara's shop. See you this evening, Helen."

When we arrive at Clara's shop Kalvin stays with the horses while Emi, Sophia and I go in. After the bell dings our arrival, Clara cames out of the back with a hearty "Hello, welcome to the shop, how may I ... Oh, your majesty."

"Good morning, Clara, how has business been?"

"Very good your majesty. I took your suggestion about displaying the stockings and have so many orders I had to hire another knitter to help. If you are you here to pickup your order, I only have it half finished."

"I will take what are done and add another eight pair, please. Also four pair of calf high. I assume the calf high have a higher price than the anklets."

"Yes, six copper a pair for the calf high stockings. And I have the calf high in stock so no wait on those. That will be three silver four, please."

"Very good." She handed me the stockings which I handed to Emi, who handed me the purse, to put in the basket. "Clara, this is a new companion of mine, Sophia. Sophia this is Clara." I dug out three silver pieces and four copper pieces then handed them to her.

"Good morning lady Sophia." Clara bowed her head to Sophia.

"And good morning to you Clara, it's my pleasure to meet you."

We bid Clara farewell then stepped outside, "Daniel the carvers shop is our next stop," I informed Kalvin. We remount and ride the short distance to his shop. Again leaving Kalvin with the horses, we go inside. "Daniel, are you here?" I call as we entered.

"In the back, your majesty. How may I help you today?" Daniel appeared in a good mood for once.

"We have come to check on progress of the grain cleaner. Are you having any problems?"

"No problems with the my part of the cleaner, your majesty. The grills are done, I'm working on the hopper and chutes, now." He got a worried look on his face, "You aren't changing any thing are you?"

"No, no changes, just more work for you, sorry. Emi the plans, please." He has a dejected look on his face now. "Hey, you get extra work because you are the best one for the job. This is a just more of the same parts you have already made, arranged differently." I show him the grain sorter plan. "This is to sort grain by size, by planting the largest seed the resulting plant should produce larger seed but first I need to find the largest seed. But first have you started on the Go boards?"

"Yes, I have the material for the boards glued together, just waiting for them to dry completely before planing them. Why?"

"How long would it take to finish four of them?"

"Eight days or so."

"Darn, would you be willing to let someone else finish a couple of them, I would like to sell them to one of the merchants and they leave in six days?"

"If I could borrow a senor apprentice from Steven I could have four of them done by then and still finish my parts for the cleaner. I'll go ask him as soon as you leave."

"No, you stay and keep working. I requested the changed scheduling so I'll ask Steven for an apprentice for you and will pay his wage also. If Steven can't or won't let an apprentice go, would one from Jason be aright?"

"One of Jason's apprentices would work also."

"Alright, one apprentice coming right up. You finish the cleaner then work on the boards, then the grain sorter. I will check in with you in couple of days, if that is alright."

"That is fine, your majesty."

"See you in a couple of days then." I headed to the door, "Oh, before I go, these are my companions, Emi," I indicate the correct person, " and Sophia. I may send them on business if I get to busy with other things. Ladies, this is Daniel, journeyman furniture maker and carver." Daniel bow his head to us as we left. Once outside I said to Kalvin, "Steven the furniture maker is next."

Steven was busy when we arrived so I talked to his senior journeyman, Samuel, I explained the problem and asked if I could hire one of their apprentices to work under Daniel for a week, saying I would be pay his wages for the week. Samuel thought about it for a bit then yelled, "Jose', come here." A young man, maybe thirteen or so, came swiftly from the back. Samuel said to him, "Her majesty has hired you assist a follow furniture maker for a week. She will show you where to go and what to do. I will see you here in a week. Your majesty, this is Jose, he is a good worker, he should be able to help Daniel with what he needs done."

"Samuel, how is the cleaner coming along? Any problems?"

"No problems, your majesty. The cleaner is progressing, the materials are being prepared now, lay out and fabrication will start in a few days."

"Very good, I will be checking again in a few days, if any problems crop up let me know right away, please. Until then, farewell."

When we are outside I give Jose' his instructions, where to go and what I believe he will be doing for Daniel. I ask what he is paid a day. He gets a copper a day plus his room and board. I return to the shop where I again talk to Samuel, asking how he wishes to handle the boy's expenses. He says the shop pays the apprentices at the end of month and Daniel can board the boy, so I give him seven copper for the wages. I ask Sophia to escort Jose to Daniel's shop and introduce him to Daniel, handing her ten copper to give to Daniel for his board. "We will be at Jason's or John's, so meet us there." Kalvin boosts Jose up behind Sophia and they ride off to Daniel's.

The three of us ride to Jason the carpenter's shop, where Emi and I go in. Like with Steven , Jason is busy so I talk to Albert, who lets me know the cleaner is coming a long, the auger is done, the power train is coming together also, the only part giving them problems is the rubbing wheel. They had problems get the leather to not compress the sponge to a hard mass. He figured two days until their parts were done. I thank him and we depart.

As we are mounting, Sophia returns, so the four of us ride to blacksmith John's shop. Kalvin goes in to bring John out, his shop is so noisy. Emi gets out the plans for the scales, which I discuss with John, explaining that the weights won't be made at this time as I have to get the master weights made first. I ask how the rulers are coming, he is almost done with the master blank, a couple of more days. I let him know that the scales will be much easier to calibrate when the rulers are finished.

The last stop in town is Harry the potter's, as I figure it will take less time to make ceramic pots than wooden ones. When I have shown him the plans and ask if he could have six pair finished in six days, he said maybe, it would depend on how fast the clay would dry. I then asked if he had a stock size that would work. He did, though without lids. That could be remedied easily, if he would loan me one of the stock pots I could get the carpenter to turn some lids. In the mean time if he would make the pots as per the plan I still want them and these would be ordered at the same time as Go stones were.

So back to Jason's we went, to again talk to Albert. I showed him the lidless pot, asking for a simple flat lid to be made to fit, twelve of them in six days. That was doable, the price for the twelve would be one silver four. I told him unless he could change a gold piece I would have to owe him, as I only had were gold pieces and a few coppers left. I could have Kalvin bring it to him later that evening. That was fine. I left the pot with him and returned to Harry's.

"What would I owe you for the twelve stock pots, Harry?"

"Three copper each your majesty. So one silver sixteen."

"Kalvin will be in town later today, he can pay you and pickup eleven of the pots, if that is alright?"

"That's fine, your majesty. Thank you for your business." He gave a small bow.

"It's a pleasure doing business with you. I will send Kalvin later then. Goodbye."

We mounted up and rode to the inlet, which looked the same as it did the last time she was there.

"Rufina, could we go wading in the sea?" Emi asks.

"Yes, Rufina, could we?" Sophia chimes in.

"If Kalvin will stand watch out of sight we can skinny dip if you wish or wear our underwear." I reply. "Will you stand watch over the hill, Kalvin, while we swim a bit?"

"Of course, Your majesty. Don't be long though, it's nearly 1000." He then turns and rides back up the hill, soon going out of sight.

We dismounted and started undressing, when I was down to my panties and bra, which aren't that much different than my swimsuit just thinner, I walked over to check the liner test hole. which was half filled with water yet, with a good crust of salt around the top of the hole. I take up the bucket and refill the hole. As I put the second bucket full in I heard giggling and splashing behind me. When I went to refill the bucket one last time I caught sight of two water nymphs, playing in the water. When I had finished filling the hole, I made my way to where our clothes were and removed my underwear, joining my friends in their nudity.

We splash about for a few minutes, then swim the width of the inlet four times. Then we redress, mounted up and ride over the hill to join Kalvin. When we got there he was talking to Alton, who has a pair of oxen yoked to a strange looking wagon, there are two wheels in front with a cradle holding up the fronts of three logs, which go back to another cradle supported by two more wheels. Come to think about it I remember seeing pictures of something familiar on the net.

"Good afternoon, Alton. I see you found what I needed. If you stop by the palace I will arrange payment."

"Very good, your majesty. Where did you want these placed? Near the center pathway?"

"That is correct, near the center pathway. We will see you later then. Good bye." He drove over the hill as we head back to the palace and dinner.
