Chapter 15: Makkapitew

Suddenly, shattering the previous silence of the cave, a series of loud roars came from one of the tunnels. It was a monstrous sound unlike that of the wendigos' cruel screeching. The roar was like a clap of thunder echoing through the cave. The air vibrated and the rock formations violently trembled under the intangible force carried by the roar.
A ruthless aura of hate and anger exploded out from one of the tunnels, drawing Judge's attention. It made him feel a sense of danger far surpassing any he had experienced in Until Dawn. He immediately dropped to his knees and struggled against his genetic constraint which surged violently inside him, trying to respond to the danger.
"Lucky! Get the weapons!" Judge cried out through clenched teeth. The moment he took to give Lucky that command caused him to lighten his focus and that small lax in concentration allowed it to push even more forward. Bringing him to the edge of his limits in resisting it. Still, he had to give the order. Whomever the roar belonged to it’s aura to was coming closer. Judge could feel the pressure, it was increasing with each second that passed, and they would need every piece of equipment they had if they wanted to survive.
Judge heard movement as Lucky ran to wherever he had hidden the weapons. He didn't bother to look at the child. All of his attention was focused on fighting back against the genetic constraint, but, as fate would have it, the tunnel where the brutal aura came from was directly within his line of sight.
The moment the aura's owner would enter his line of sight Judge knew that no matter how hard he fought the genetic constraint would smash through it. After all, the genetic constraint's activation was directly tied to the danger he was in; he was an instinctual type. An unseen, hypothetical threat was bad enough, but a threat appearing directly in front of him was an entirely different matter.
He wasn't sure how long he would be able to remain in the unlocked mode before his genes started breaking down and his enhancement began to kill him. Maybe around 5 minutes; 10 if he was lucky. As the fight began he would have to do everything it took to bring down any and all possible threats to him once he exited out of the unlocked mode. He couldn't let himself die here, even more so when the mission was so close to its end.
Even if he didn't check his watch, the internal clock of an enhanced human who unlocked the genetic constraint was nothing to laugh at, and according to it he was unconscious for at least two hours. That meant there was only around four hours till the mission was over. Four hours until the first step of his plan, the plan he had almost given up hope of ever accomplishing, was finally getting started. If he let himself die now, wouldn't that be a mockery to not just his life but to the lives of all those he promised to avenge? Something as sad and as pathetic as that could not be allowed to happen.

From his side came a loud thud; it was probably Lucky bringing over the weapons. Judge wasn't able to turn his head or give the kid any more instructions because he couldn't afford any distractions. On the surface his eyes were bloodshot from the concentration, his muscles were as tense as they could be, sweat was pouring off him endlessly, and the aura of a mad beast was radiating off of him. Nobody would even think of approaching him in that state, doing so would be the same as kicking a sleeping tiger, jumping off a cliff, or some other equally suicidal action.
The roar faded away but the aura did not, if anything it only seemed to grow stronger. Now that the roar was gone Judge could hear two new sounds. The first was the same familiar screeching wail of the wendigos. The second, despite also being a scream, sounded much more....human.
It was only a few moments later that Judge saw who the two screams belonged to. A screaming human figure ran out from the tunnel. The figure sported a mohawk and appeared to be crying as he ran from whatever was chasing him. Right behind the human, several white blurs flashed out from the tunnel landing in front of the human. The human screamed harder in response and fell backward onto the the ground.
The white blurs were five wendigos, and the horns on their head and sharp sickles growing out of their arms and legs marked them as chiefs. However, these ones were a bit different from the ones that were outside the cabin. They seemed more..tribal. Their horns and sickles were covered in black lines that spread out all over their bony white bodies. Most different was their aura. The cruel and vicious aura they normally emitted was more subdued as if they were intentionally suppressing it.
Judge felt his heart tremble. When the chiefs appeared his genetic constraint had gone wild but not enough to push him over the edge. This meant that the chiefs were not the danger it was reacting to. That was bad. Even in the unlocked mode five chiefs would already be difficult for him to deal with, if there was another creature present that was strong enough to make them submissive, then this next fight was gonna be more dangerous than he thought. There was also another problem.
In the state he was in Judge was leaking bloodlust without end. Creatures as powerful as the chiefs should have been able to feel it and should have reacted to it already. The fact that they didn't show any response showed just how much they feared the mystery monster; they probably didn't even consider him a threat when compared to it. The situation became more tense as the pressure and aura from the mystery monster only continued to grow without it ever showing itself.
Roar!
With a mighty roar the mystery monster came out of the tunnel. But it didn't head for the human or the chiefs but charged directly at Judge!

An intense pain that came directly from his cells surged throughout his body, but with it came energy and power. Judge barely registered it before his body began to move.
He turned to the side, grabbed Lucky and the weapons on the floor, and kicked as hard as he could against the ground at an angle. The force from his kick turned the rock into powder as it catapulted him through the air.
While in mid air Judge watched the white blur crash into the rock formation they were previously on. It didn't even register the impact as it turned its body and charged at him again; aiming to catch him the moment his feet touched the ground.
The moment he landed Judge made no attempt to dodge the creature's charge. Throwing Lucky and the weapons far to the side, he then brought up both his hands and punched at the figure!
Bang!
A sound like a thunderclap exploded out along with a massive windstorm that rose up from the impact between Judge and the creature. The impact had sent him flying into the side of the cave while the creature didn't move an inch.
Now that the creature wasn't moving Judge was able to finally get a good look at it. The creature...looked human and also like a wendigo.
Its humanlike face was twisted in a mask of cruelty and vileness. The perpetual grin on its face revealed a mouth full of razor sharp yellowed teeth and a black serpentine tongue. Its eyes were the same lifeless milky white as the other wendigos but they were streaked with red veins that sprouted from a blood red pupil in the center.
Its torso was large and barrel chested, which made it look much more well built than the other wendigos. Judge thought it might have been around three meters in height if it stood straight but its back was hunched over in a painful looking arch. Its back and torso were lumpy and crooked as what appeared to be multiple spines and ribs woven around each other and threatened to poke out of it’s skin.
The creature creepily swayed to an invisible tune as it's too thin legs fought to keep it upright. Its thick arms were like massive pillars of jagged bone and flesh. At the end of the arms hung tens of long multi-jointed fingers, tipped with green-veined black claws. The fingers dragged on the ground as the creature swayed giving rise to a constant clacking noise as it used its spider leg-like fingers to keep itself steady.
The creature looked completely terrifying, but that wasn't what shocked Judge the most. What shocked him was that the creature was on fire. It wasn't a normal fire, though. The silver colored fire was faint and clung to the creature's body like some kind of extra layer of skin. The ground that came in contact with it began to crackle as ice formed on the surface, and the air began to condense into specks of ice.
Judge emerged from the hole he was sent into. His entire body was covered in a layer of crystal that crackled and broke off as he moved. He appeared to be completely unharmed by the creature's attack.
Both Judge and the creature eyed each other. They could feel the danger each one posed to the other, and were cautiously observing their opponent. For what first appeared to be just another mindless wendigo, the creature was far more intelligent than it let on.
Shockingly it was Judge who made the first move. Not against the wendigo but against himself. He didn't hesitate in the slightest as he formed a crystalline knife with his hand and ruthlessly thrust it into his own chest.
The moment he did so the Apocalypse Virus and Void Genome inside of him awoke to its full potential. The virus rapidly began to emerge from its sleep within his genes and began covering his body in layer after layer of sharp jagged crystal. A bright light emerged from his chest as he reached in to pull out his Void.
The crystals grew most rapidly along the arm he had plunged into himself. They had grown to such a level that his arms was now three times as large as before and appeared to be completely made out of crystal.
Judge gritted his teeth as he pulled on his Void and with a final fierce yank he ripped it free. The moment he drew it the pressure he let out more than doubled in intensity. Even the creature took a step back when faced with the pressure.
The Void took the form of a massive crystal lance that radiated out a savage energy. The lance was composed of thousands of jagged irregularly shaped crystals that were in constant motion. They spun, twisted, and made their way around the lance like they were its teeth, threatening to tear shreds whatever they came in contact with.
The crystals on Judge's body grew in such a way that the lance was fused to his crystal arm, and moved like an extension of himself as he charged forward to combat the creature.

Dear diary. When you read stories about some people missing and returning after years of absence claiming they were living in another world, your first reaction is to scoff and dismiss a story as a tall tale, right? I know I did. All the time. Until it happened to me and I no longer did. That day was today. Some god of thunder smote me. If it were Chris Hemsworth, I wouldn't mind but it was some barbaric Hitite god that abaondned Earth some four millennia ago. Yes, what can I say? I love the seventh art. I have more hours watching movies than any other activity, including sleep. What? Do you think I'm exaggerating? Maybe I am. I'll really miss hollywood the most. And my biggest regret is that I never got to visit the holy city of cinema. I did not come to another world to be a hero even though there was hints that they hoped I'd save it. I did not come with overpowered abilities able to, dunno, leap tall castles in a single bound, faster than a speeding crossbow bolt, be more powerful than a eight-horse carriage, the bounds. No. After the asshole god that murdered me brought me to his world, he gave me some boons from his discount bin and "The Power of my Soul (tm)". Forgive my french, I hope you understand I am rather upset at dying. And he somehow decided that my power is to recycle stuff. How awesome is that? Not much at first, I must admit. At least I got all my camping stuff and equipment with me. There's no lycra in the other world. I'll make it someday, but that day is not today. So here I am. In another world, in the middle of nowhere. I'm no heroine. As the song goes, I'm your basic average girl. And I'm assumed to be here to save the world. But almost everything can stop me, because I'm not named Kim. Wish me luck, diary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This novel is going have the following features: slow-paced slice-of-life No GameLit / LitRPG elements. Movie references. Sandra likes the seventh art. Journal / diary style crafting (includes chemistry, engineering and metallurgy) low magic technological advancement (for Sandra, at least. She is not against sharing though) personal relations clash of perception between the modern and ancient customs. bits of tension, fighting, and plot here and there. I won't repeat myself though. Once she crafts a good batch of soap, for example, she'll just note, "I crafted soap again." Once it is estabilished how she obtains compound X, compound X2 that is obtainable from the same process will also just be mentioned. I'll try to be as realistic as I can with the crafting, chemistry, and technology. Cover: Public Domain Image by StockSnap from Pixabay. No attribution required but we do it anyway.

This is a LitRPG that follows Claire Woodward, A somewhat nerdy high school senior, who finds herself trapped in a video game, The Crimson Castle, she had just booted up for the first time. The Low Magic Fantasy World of The Crimson Castle is unlike any other. The world consists of only two things, the walled city of Dal and the wilderness that surrounds it. Each night, the wilderness outside of the city disappears and for five minutes the world trembles. Once the five minutes are up, the wilderness reappears, but it is always different from any previous' day wilderness. This means each day the city of Dal is surrounded by something new and exciting. Sometimes, the city of Dal finds itself on top of a snowy mountain, the next day in a foggy swamp, the next day after that on a tropical island, and so on. Inhabitants of Dal that go out into the wilderness are called adventurers. The further adventurers get from city of Dal, the rarer the loot they will find, but also the more treacherous their travels will become. Do not worry though, it is impossible to die in the wilderness. If your health reaches zero you will transported back to the city of Dal alive and well. Will Claire be able to figure out why she was transported into this world, and better yet, will she be able to escape it?
