《I shall seek revenge》Chapter 14 - Ten years later

Ten years later…
After being sold downriver by my own father and betrothed to Lyra, things got fairly calm. Night was skeptical at first when Darian approached him however he threw out that silly thought once Darian told him that I would give Solarian his life trace if he didn’t comply. I’m not sure if I should be flattered or pleased when a branch of the Beguiling Flower House opened in Flansbur within a week. Night even personally moved his office to the branch location. Soon his spy agency was implanted in every facet of the Atarian society, from beggars to Dukes, there were our spies everywhere. Darian was off on his own seeing to ‘my interests’, though I had no idea what that was supposed to be but then he had always been a resourceful and loyal follower. I imagine he must have been raging when he first found out that the other Heroes had turned on me, killed me and then blackened my name. Thankfully he decided to lay low instead.
Lady Goodard and Lyra still come over at least two to three times a month for weekends and I can’t say that I am displeased by the idea of marrying Lyra. She’s blossoming into a gorgeous woman and is quite delightful at that. Things have been going nicely, the Emperor was happy with the training of the Moon squad and apart from the random ranting from the Dracos and Restavs who came in last yet again for the last two war games. The mighty do fall harder than most. I tried gathering information on the five so-called Heroes and for the most part generalized information was easy enough to get but anything more specific was nearly impossible.
Tera and Dreal, from what Night could gather, were injured the most in the spectacular blast of my dantian. Sols, Kaban and Kava suffered only some light injuries as they were able to put up mana shields and they were further away. Dreal was the next least injured as he was able to hide behind the Demon Lord’s throne. Tera, on the other hand, was the closest and was still looking at me when I blew. From what Night was able to determine from reports from his agents her face was injured the most in the blast and while Dreal was able to heal her somewhat he was unable to fix the disfigurement on her face because the blast was not an ordinary one – it was a cursed blast. Now she wears a mask wherever she goes, a testament to her treachery if you ask me.

From what Night was able to determine, Sols was somewhere here in Ataria but he was laying low. Kaban was in the Kingdom of Gildan – a mostly human populated kingdom. Kava was back home in the Kingdom of the Elves, Tristera. And Dreal was still in the wind, as a healer it was obvious that he would be circulating between the allied kingdoms going where needed. He was the only one I had reservations about getting revenge on, and that was only because before I died as he healed me he mumbled ‘sorry’, before walking away after he was finished. Night found out that he had given up most of the glory of being a Hero and was now roaming the various Kingdoms helping out in hospitals and orphanages. Simply put, if he doesn’t come looking for me, I doubt that I will ever go looking for him. Tera stayed in Caladan, taking up the role of Head Advisor to the King as well as the leader of the light Paladins.
My revenge was going to have to wait a bit longer, I had started cultivating a few years ago and now I was at the 9th stage of the Ascendant’s realm. Cultivation on this planet was different than the usual wuxia stories that I had read when I was still on earth before the summoning. It was greatly dependant on your frame of mind, the willpower and determination you had. Of course your meridian veins played a role as well but more along the lines of how long it would take you to cultivate rather than what your final destination would be. There were several realms you could cultivate to. The first was the Apprentice realm, followed by the Mortal, the Ascendant, the Emperor, the Saint, the Divine and then the God realm, with each realm having ten stages. Needless to say, I kept my cultivation to myself and even hid it so that I would appear to be at the beginning of the Mortal realm, having a fifteen year old at the 5th stage of the Ascendant’s realm was mind boggling so I toned it down to something that was a bit more believable, albeit only if I was a genius.

In a month my wedding to Lyra was to be held. I had grown to adore her these past few years, aaaannnnddd then there was her mother Lady Goodard and her fearsome smile. I don’t think anyone has ever denied her something when that smile came out, oh she’s not a violent person but somehow, someway she manages to get whatever she wants when she puts her mind to it. Well the bridal party was being held today and Lyra was running around gushing with everyone and glorious in her smiles and jubilance. There were many guests arriving, including the emperor – whom I still have some reservations about by the way. Anyway, I was in the receiving line, meeting and greeting people when then Emperor arrived. The Emperor’s arrival heralded the usual fanfare and bowing and smoozing but after the emperor finally left the receiving line someone came up that almost made me lose my usual calm. It was that bastard Sols.

The Botched Summoning
People know of the Summoning Ritual: it brings the greatest of heroes in a new world to defeat the evil at the horizon! High and mighty adventurers, guardians of light, here to defend the oppressed humanity from their despicable foes. But what if the plea, the 'desperate' call for help, was met with contempt and disdain ? What would happen if the ritual fails? What horrid things could come out of a botched ritual? A man can personify the most feared beast known of man while being the sole hope of the kingdom. Emotions can cloud even gods judgement. Balance of power if a fragile thing, oaths and scorn can disturb it easily. This is the story of Fafnir as he has to survive his new life. But things are not always as they appear." i want to thank mejinzs for his gift of cover art, and both rouge and mejinzs for the proofreading support and rouge for the help with the abstract R15+ for violence... i guess and possible strong language... i guess (doing this as a better safe than sorry sort of deal.) now posting on my blogspot site as well (https://talesoftheforgottenslayer.wordpress.com/)

“Hello! My humble audience! I, the Bard of the North, am going to tell you a tale. Nothing new, nothing old. A story of a hero, some may say, others a poor boy who was hated by the world.” The storyteller paused as he waited, right timing was everything when telling a story. Pacing… Too slow and the audience became bored then left without tossing even the smallest of coins. If he spoke too fast and rushed the story. It would leave the audience confused and having no reason to be impressed. So like any good storyteller, the Bard has to do a balancing act of sorts. Not too slow, not too fast. Just perfectly in the middle. “In a shattered country in the south, a novice princeling has the ambition to mend a torn tapestry that is his birthplace. Struggling to fend off those who would usurp the throne in an unending civil war spanning centuries. A mercenary that left only death in his wake, unable to stave off the monotony and peace of life. He looks back at the path laden with bodies, wondering if it was all worth it. Wandering souls summoned by a madman, travel away from a wasteland in a foreign land, the first alone, the others as companions. A deity, ancient in her years, waiting to be freed from a duty she no longer enjoys. For all these people and their stories, none are the hero of this tale. No, the hero is not grand, not wise, not ready.. he was punished for nothing of his doing, who was an outcast that was unloved by many, including his father.” This was always the big reveal novices use to jump off into their story. He did not start here, instead, like any good fishermen, he set the bait and waited until the fish bit before pulling. As he saw the audience's eyes focus, he then started the backstory. The harness, that stopped the listeners from having metaphorical whiplash. The foreshadowing. “But that is not where the story starts. No, not even the hero's birth. Where the story begins, is the boredom of the deity, a deity many know of. She who hunts for the impossible, the guide for those who have lost the path, the Huntress of Mallon--” A small pause, a short breath. “--All old names for a single powerful being that has roamed the grounds of this continent longer than any line of kings or queens, lords or ladies. A being of worship for many an individual…” One last breath. And he began singing the first verse.

8 143The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
