《Witch's pet》CHAP 6: Freedom

The priest and his guards were already up when i came back. They packed quickly while nibbling absentmindedly on some jerky. Once they had their bags ready, we headed toward the exit. Nothing worth mentioning appeared, none of the monsters were strong enough to threaten the heavily armored crusaders.
Then we reached the large stone arch that stood between the cold underground temple and the wild north's forests. It's the first time I'm seeing the sun since my reincarnation. What was less than a weak had already felt like an eternity. The sun feel like a new experience to me, probably because it's the first time I have fur. The way you feel the heat of the gigantic fireball with it is far different.
While i was daydreaming the others brought a carriage that was subtely hidden under heaps of leafs. The priest grabbed me and sat in the back with me on his lap. Three of the guards did the same while the last went on the front.
We departed. I felt suprisingly nostalgic when i looked back at the stone arch. I guess you could say i spent my whole life there. Which was five days.
The carriage is shaking a lot, but it doesn't seems to bother anyone. I guess they already went through that on the way here.
Actually the shaking is kinda making me sleepy, I may have stayed up for too long yesterday.
And i fell asleep. A long restorative rest, without any kind of dream.
When I woke up I could already see the walls of a city. And then :
Hey! It's me Pampil! Your rank up allowed me to send this, though it's a one time thing. We should be able to talk more when you rank up again. Good job on the leveling and thanks for sealing the witch's cave ^^ . Thanks to you i'm way less bored than before. Oh and please next time take the hecatoncheir ability ! I made that spell and can guarantee it's efficiency. Also you should now be slowly getting back your soul, I didn't mention it because I didn't want to scare you but it was shattered when you summoned me. Should be completely healed in a few days. Meaning you will get your emotions back, when you were in the temple you only thought in terms of efficiency and strictly followed my rules. While i do appreciate it, you should be more selfish, or at least original. I mean you are supposed to distract me, and honestly mindless golems aren't really fun to watch. Well the choice is up to you! See ya!
PS: Please don't stay with the priest too much, he is warding off my powers.
. . . I guess I did indeed behave like a golem. Though I find it quite cheeky to complain about me doing what she wanted. I do have now the freedom of being relieved of my anger and already did most of what was expected of me. The problem is that i have no clue as to what i should do. Seek happiness? Become stronger? Search for witches? I have no idea. As far as my memory goes, I have always been either restricted or driven by instinct or hatred. I don't know how to enjoy life.

And when I say it, it feels even worse. I may just need to stop overthinking and do whatever comes to mind. Yeah I'll do just that.
As i reached my conclusion we reached the gate. All the guards bowed.
"Welcome back your holiness!"
The priest waved at them with a calm smile. He had the aura of a saint befitting of the way they treated him. The carriage went inside the city without even being searched. Behind the large stone walls stood the typical northern town. The town's structure is one of the most common, two large roads divide the place into four districts, one go from the south gate to the north one, the other, where we currently are, from the east gate to the river port in the west. The district on my left is filled with commoners, the stone houses with wooden roofs and alleys are filled with kids playing and laborers coming home from work.
On the right I can see larger buildings with more detailed front. A lot of them have signboards and displays of merchandise. It seems I'm between the lower residential and commercial districts. In the middle, where the two roads cross in a large plaza you can see the spire of a large building. A temple of the godess of order. Under the spire a large dome made of grey stone covers enough room for ten houses. Large buildings were added to the sides, probably to accomodate the priests.
We eventually reached one of those, the high priest took me in his arms and droped from the carriage. The crusaders excused themselves and headed toward what seemed like barracks.
The building we are now facing is like a noble's house. It has a garden filled with alchemical herbs, even some used for poisons, which is quite surprising for a church of order. The marble-like stone used to build this mansion was clearly made with magic, probably a mix of earth and holy magic. The building is taller than most house but doesn't tower over them. It seems to have two storeys and a balcony.
The high priest casually walked in, a maid greeted him and took his mantle. Then she saw me.
"My lord is that a new pet for your daughter?"
"Yes, I found this cat while exploring the temple."
"Speaking of which, did you succeed? "
"Yes, we retrieved the relic, though we had to fight a lich for that."
"Oh my, must be the first time you had to face something older than you Divan."
They smiled and laughed. It seems that they have a good relation, even if they are master and servant. Also now i know the name of the high priest. All the other persons we met called him "your holliness" or "sir priest".

"Do you know where Lein is? I want to know what she think of this cat that managed to survive in a place filled with undeads."
"Isn't it normal for an amethyst cat?"
"An amethyst cat?"
He stared at the amethyst on my forehead.
Seems like priest don't gain a lot of perception with levels.
"It evolved into an amethyst cat? Isn't that a wise beast worth more than twenty gold coins?"
"It is indeed sir. I believe your daughter will love it."
And, as if she felt someone was talking about her, said Lein ran down the stairs and tackle-hugged Divan. She is about 16, a slender girl, pretty tall for her age. Her eyes are a vibrant green. The dark brown hairs that cover her ears and part of her face give her a creepy appearance. Her nose is aquiline, her eyebrows thin and her mouth thin-lipped. She's wearing a brown tunic and leather boots. A satchel filled with books is hagging on her hip, she was probably about to go to the library. Overall she is pretty attractive despite her strange looks, and she feels familiar, i don't know why.
"Granpa! You're back! Did you kill a lot of undeads? Did you find interesting monsters? Tell me, tell me!"
"Calm down Lein. I brought with me someone you might want to greet."
He held me up at eye level so she could see me. I think i'm getting into the "spectacular beast" thing because I meowed loudly. The girl's eyes lit up as she saw me, her face gradually turning into an expression of extatic joy.
"Awww is it an amethyst cat? Is it for me? Can I pet it? Where did you find it? Is it a male?"
The endless flow of question came to a halt when the old man suddenly put me in her arms.
"It is an amethyst cat i found in the ruins. I have no clue what it was doing here but it helped us fight a lich. And yes, it is now yours, but you have to take care of it."
Her smile widened so much you could think it would reach her ears. She is already uncousciously petting my head. Not that I mind, it seems I've come to adapt to my feline condition.
"I'm calling him Mr.Meow"
I know it's a bad idea to attack someone you just met. I know it's normal for peoples to give their pet silly names. But there is no way I'm letting that name appear on my status.
I clawed her hand, barely grazing it.
"Ow I think he doesn't like this name."
The maid instantly reacted: "Are you alright Lein?"
"Yes, I'm fine, but I need a name for him. One that doesn't get me clawed."
"You should give him a more repectful name Lein, wise beast are as smart as humans, they are not to be treated like pets or cattle."
Divan told the maid to prepare the meal with extras for me, she departed for what looked like the kitchen, while giving the graze on Lein's hand a concerned stare.
"Maybe a simple name from the church would do the trick."
"It's a black cat! They have affinity to curse, I don't think he would like a name from the church of order. Maybe from the church of chaos."
"Do you know of any name they have?"
"Not really. I could just steal one from one of the forgottens"
She took out a book from her sachel. The cover was covered in well-written, dark red letters: "Tales of the forgottens: a time before man and god.".
"You do know these names have a lot of implications. The forgottens aren't normal beings"
"I don't care, it's just a name, it'll be fine. No wich one do whe choose? The black phoenix? Or the mist leviathan? Maybe the keeper of knowledge."
I have no idea of what she's talking about so I'll go with the best sounding one.
While she skimmed her book, I climbed on her shoulder. She reached a page that described a long forgotten beast. The sun eater, a being that wanted to pull the entire world into darkness. The story wasn't really endeaving but i liked the name. Plus the beast was described as a large ball of black fur and hatred, with claws and fangs sturdier than diamonds. The similitudes were enough for me so I meowed to let Lein know that I wanted this one.
"The sun eater huh? I don't think you have what it takes to eat the sun, but if you like it."
And that day, without knowing, I started one of history's greatest misunderstanding. Because years later peoples found out that the sun eater was in fact, a wolf. But everyone already believed it was a cat. Because that day, one of the rare amethyst cat was named "Fenrir".
