《Envy》Chapter 7: Appraisal

Because Ember wasn’t coming back for a long time after I finished the meal I decided to leave the kitchen to check if nothing has happened. When I opened the door I heard a muffled conversation. I was still too far to be able to understand what they were talking about, but I had a hunch that it was related to me, so stepped out of the kitchen and followed the voices.
“We can’t keep her here. You’ve seen her eyes and hair, she is certainly a demon. We’ve assumed that she is a human with demon bloodline, because she didn’t have any horns, but it turns out she is from a primordial demon race and because she is too young she has not grown one yet.” Said Ivor.
“It’s true that primordial demons start growing their horns after the age of eighty, but they are also proud and aloof. Even ordinary demons are lower beings in their eyes! Even though she looks like one, she certainly does not act like one. What makes you think she is one of them?” Asked Ember.
“Do you remember that flash of light that happened in the forest? It was certainly some sort of high tier magic and you know that mere sixteen years old human would not be capable of that kind of magic, even The Hero couldn’t cast single high tier spell before turning twenty...”
Sixteen years old?! I know I look young, but certainly that young!
“Language learning 48% complete.” Hal informed me.
“...It is known fact that demons age much slower than humans so despite her looks she is certainly at least 50 years old. It wouldn’t be surprising if she could use high tier magic.” He explained.
Hey! Hey! How the hell sixteen has became fifty?
“Ok, ok, I get your point, but even…”
It turns out I’m a burden for them. I guess I’ll just leave, but first I have to somehow ask about that demon part.
I decided to go back to the kitchen and wait for Ember. It didn’t have to wait for a long time, at most it took her 5 minutes, probably because when I decided to go back, they were already reaching the conclusion of their argument.
“I’m sorry, but you’ll have to leave within three days. I couldn’t persuade my husband to let you stay any longer, he is afraid that, because of you being a demon we might get into a trouble.” She said while entering the kitchen.
Ahh screw it. Maybe she will be able to understand me.
“I leave on my own. Don’t want to be a burden. Why you call me demon?” I stood up and asked.
“ Ehhh… Why we call you a demon? Aren’t you one?” She replied.
“I’m human.” I answered.
At least in 50%.
“Language learning 49% complete.” Said Hal.
“Really?” She asked.
“Yes!” I exclaimed.
“Ok, ok. I’ll believe you for now, but If you truly are a human, you should get some sort of identification card, so you won’t get into a trouble with local authorities. Although it probably won’t prevent normal citizens from ostracizing you.” Said Ember.
“Identification card? How can I get one?” I asked.
“Where were you living before? Since invention of Crystal Conductors almost every country requires for citizen with higher status to have a one. Strange... to not know about ID cards...”

I don’t get it is this world technologically advanced or not?
“...Ahh… Nevermind. We should get you and Adventurer’s ID Card from the local branch of The Adventurers Guild. The downside of such card is that it will expire after 1 month, but worry not, the period is refreshed each time you visit The Adventurers Guild. Ahh… almost forgot to tell you that you also have to pass the test which tests your abilities, but don’t worry even though you are missing one hand with my recommendation you will be able to skip the test.” She explained.
“You know much about Adventurers Guild.”
“I'm speaking from my experience, back in the day I and my husband were C rank adventurers.”
“Language learning 50% complete.” Hal informed me.
“Were?” I said confused.
“Ahh… It’s a long story, but basically after we got married, we settled down here to live our life leisurely. Although we still work as adventurers we’ve been demoted, because we’ve stopped taking C rank quests.” She explained.
“What is this C rank?” I unintentionally voiced my thoughts.
“You don’t know about ranks? Ehh.. nevermind, I’ll just take you to The Adventurers Guild later. They will explain everything to you and you will also be able to get your card.”
After she said that we’ve continued our talk for around half an hour during which my language skills rose at astonishing rate. I learned that this world was called Aqua, there were at least 2 continents, bigger one was simply called The Continent and the smaller one was called The Origin.
It turns out that The Keeper transported me to Greenwood village located somewhere at the border of Lecy Kingdom of The Origin.
I also learned that this world had more races than only humans, but I didn’t get any informations about what kind of races except for demons.
I didn’t want to look like someone suspicious, so I wasn’t asking any direct questions and I only guided the conversation to appropriate direction. I knew that earlier I did indeed ask some questions about things that were part of common knowledge and because of that I didn’t want to look even more suspicious.
After the conversation we’ve decided to set off to The Adventurers Guild. Just as we were about to exit the house, something unexpected happened.
“Mum! Is it true that this lady is a demon? Dad told me that I shouldn’t talk to her, because she is a demon!” Shouted Ivor’s and Ember’s daughter while running towards us through the hall.
“No, it isn’t. Your father is just playing a prank on you.”
“Ehhh...What a pity.” The girl whispered to herself
“By the way, mum where are you going with the lady?” She then added.
“Language learning 79% complete.” Said Hal.
Hah. I didn’t know that in this short amount of time I’d already be capable of speaking this language more or less casually.
“We are going to The Adventurers Guild. I’m going to help Invidia register herself as an adventurer” Ember explained.
Gah. It sounds so bad, I’ll have to think of another name later.
“Can I go with you?” Girl’s eyes glittered as she said that.
“Not this time Mira.” Ember answered.
So her name is Mira huh?
“Pleeeease.” said the girl.
“Alright, but don’t tell your father about it.” Said Ember.

“Yesss, you’re the best Mum.”
While we were walking to the guild I noticed that the village was pretty small, there were at most 50 buildings, most of them were made of wood and stone, but sometimes you could notice a building completely made of stone or wood.
I had the feeling that everybody was looking at me, but whenever I turned my head towards someone, that person looked away. Mira seemed to not notice people's gazes and even acted a bit playfully, but her mother who was aware of them leaned and whispered to me.
“Don’t worry, they act like this, because it’s pretty rare for someone to visit our village.” She said, but I had the feeling she lied, so I could feel better.
After several minutes we’ve finally managed to reach The Adventurers Guild. It was probably the biggest building in the village. It was made of wood and stone, you could see several big windows, that contrasted with the rest of the buildings which had very small windows.
“So this is The Adventurers Guild branch, but why did they build such big building for the village of this size?” I asked out of curiosity.
“That’s actually very simple, it was built with future in mind. It’s cheaper to build a larger outpost earlier than expand it later when the population of village rises.” Ember explained.
“Let’s enter.” I said and pushed huge arc doors which served as entrance. Surprisingly I was met with 0 resistance, it was as if doors were weighless.
“Huh?” I said in a surprise.
“Haha, almost each person who enters the guild’s building for the first time makes this kind of surprised expression.” Laughed Mira.
“You also made this expression, so you shouldn’t laugh at Invidia.” Said Ember.
Ugh. I hate this codename, but I know that it was given to me because of my name which I currently can’t remember.
“I don’t mind” I said and finally entered the guild
The inside of the building was pretty much empty, there were only a few people sitting around tables arranged in the corner. There was also something that looked like a reception desk in front of the doors.
While I was scanning surroundings I was suddenly pulled towards the reception by Ember.
“Come, let’s register you.” She Said.
A young man was standing behind the counter, he was looking through some papers so at the beginning he didn’t notice us, but after a few seconds he finally looked up.
“Good afternoon Mrs. Ember. How may I help you?” He said.
“We’re here to register this girl.” Ember said and pointed at me.
“Normally I’d charge 500 les, but since it’s Mrs. Ember who brought her here, the registration will be free of charge, but why did you want to make a demon an adventurer in a human country?” Said the man.
Hou, I wonder what kind of position Ember has?
“Firstly, she is a human and secondly according to law any race can become an adventurer.” Explained Ember.
“At least she told me she is a human” She then whispered to the man not knowing that I could hear her with my Inhuman sense of hearing.
“Do you believe her?” He whispered back
“I believe that she believes that she is a human.” She elaborated.
“I understand, I won’t mention it again.” He replied.
Great! Now they think I’m crazy.
After they finished their “secret” talk the man looked towards me.
“I’m sorry for making assumptions and thus being unprofessional.” He said to me
“Ok, now finish your registration. I’ll be waiting fo you over there.” Said Ember and walked towards the tables.
“Language learning 80% complete.” Said Hal.
“Me too.” Said Mira and followed her mother.
“Please follow me. We will now proceed to test your abilities, unfortunately our equipment is only enough to run 1 stage tests, so you won’t be able to gain rank higher than E.” He said.
The man took me to some sort of an orb on a stone pedestal. Strangely I didn’t notice it when when I’ve entered the guild, despite that the pedestal was located in the centre of the building.
“Please put your hand on the appraisal orb.” Said the man.
Appraisal what?
Despite being confused I still did what the man asked me to do without asking any questions. After I put my hand on the orb I felt pleasant warmth spreading through my body.
“.Warning! Foreign energy detected. Attempting absorption… Attempt failed… Attempting absorption… Absorption failed… Attempting absorption… Absorption in progress...” Hal warned me suddenly.
The orb started giving light which intensified along with the feeling of warmth, soon after the small lightnings started crackling around my hand.
“What is happening!? I’ve never seen something like this!” The man shouted in panic.
“I knew I’d see something interesting.” I heard Mira somewhere in the background.
“Quickly! Take your hand off the orb!” Shouted Ember.
I tried to pull my hand off the orb, but it was as if my hand was welded to it, there was no way I could separate my hand from it with my strength. The warmth started slowly turning unpleasant. I was getting scared that if it keeps getting warmer it may slowly cook me alive.
Suddenly the warmth vanished and because the force which was keeping my hand connected to the orb also vanished, I fell on my back..
“Absorption complete. Energy levels at 78%. Initializing high-level systems… Initializing complete.” Said Hal.
Ha! Good work Hal. Now I don’t have to worry about energy at least for some time.
I was still on the ground partially in shock and partially happy. At first I didn’t notice commotion happening around. Only after few minutes I noticed the people that were gathering around, but I wasn’t the center of their attention, instead they were all focused on the orb. When I looked at the orb I saw something like a hologram hovering above it. The hologram showed a table filled with some sort of statistics.
(note: not going to use tables on royalroadl anymore)

No, there will be no levels and experience points.
Sorry for the delay, but Overwatch open beta was out and I wanted to play as long as I could.
I’m wondering do you want to have an access to my notes that contain description of things that have been mentioned, but weren’t explained yet?
