《Chains》Chapter 23 - The Truth Behind the Church

"Mom!" shouted Vicky, running to her mother and embracing the woman that the pope had led them too. It was a room not disimilar to Vicky's, with no expense left out in it's design and maintanence. Eric watched as Vicky reunited with her mother, but the older woman showed no expression to such an emotional moment. The pope watched with a gentle smile, a seeingly old man who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life.

"What did you do to her?" Eric asked, his voice hard but not forceful.

"Personally, I've done nothing," the pope answered like a politician. "Queen Senovia of Lorain has recieved nothing but the teaching of the church and every expense that we could offer."

Eric eyed the pope, who simply smiled with teeth as white his robes. He watched Vicky smother herself into her mother's church garb, but the queen was not making any motion to embrace her child.

"Dear queen, will you not share this moment with your child?" the pope suggested.

That's when the queen started to break down, her eyes tearing up as she got on one knee. Vicky and her mother hugged each other with all the fervor that they could muster, but there was something off. It was nagging at Eric that something wasn't right, but he just couldn't put a finger on any one specific reason.

That's when it happened, Vicky grabbed the top button on the back of the queen's robes and pulled as hard as she could. The buttons came off like shots from a gun as the robes were opened. The white cloth fell to the floor revealing the voluptious contours(milf) of the queen of Lorain. Vicky pushed away from her mother, pulling the robes with her to fully bare the woman to the eyes of everyone present.

The queen was left sniveling on her knees, her arms stretched out to her daughter, and the mark of a slave displayed on her sizeable chest.

Eric smirked at the pope, whose gentle smile was now a frown of disapproval.

"Well," he said, glancing up at the goliath next to him, "didn't expect that."

Eric put a massive hand on the pope's shoulder saying, "Neither did I."

"I didn't want this to get ugly," sighed the pope, then he tapped his scepter on the ground. There was a bright flash of light that blinded Eric, and once he could see again, the pope had disappeared.

"Shite," Eric exclaimed, looking down the hall to see if the old man made a run for it.

"We need to get out of here," Vicky said, tugging on her mother's hand. "He'll be back any minute with reinforcements."

"Alright," Eric said, approaching the crying mother who clung desperately to her daughter. With a quick chop to the back of the neck, the woman was knocked out and laying on her daughter. Eric picked the queen up and set her across his shoulders, then grabbed Vicky and lifted her onto his shoulders as well.

"Woah," Vicky exclaimed, unprepared for the sudden movement.

"Hold on tight," Eric told the princess, "this is going to get bumpy."

Eric sprinted through the hallways, breaking every land-speed record ever set on this technologically poor continent. The princess flopped and flew a few times, but she held on desperately while her mother was tossed around like a sack of potatoes. They burst through the courtyard and into the open area where bodies still littered the ground. Eric stopped to look around, trying to judge where to go when a high pitch screech started to annoy his ears. Looking around, the noise only got louder as Eric suddenly felt hotter and hotter.

Without warning, Eric tossed the queen and the princess to either side, right before an unholy energy came down from above and obliterated everything within a five foot radius of Eric.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!" Eric roared as he was bathed in light that superheated the air and everything around him. Vicky felt the heat like a furnace right next to her, searing her clothes and tanning her skin. The queen didn't register the pain, but she would have a one-sided tan on her back for a few months. But Eric, he was scorched by the energy as it poured down on his body.

The light stopped, and Eric was left in a ten foot wide crater, his entire body scorched black by the heat. He was in a kneeling position, as though even the weight of a killer ray from the sky couldn't floor the goliath man. The residual heat was enough to flambe a salmon, leaving trails of smoke from the crater that almost masked Eric at the center.

Unbelievably, Eric started to move, every miniscule cell in his body screaming out for sweet release. He took a step forward then inhaled sharply as the pain registered. He took another step, inhaled, then turned his head to see Vicky. The princess was staring at Eric as though his survival was more cruel than his death. He struggled over to Vicky, each step a flare of searing pain throughout his body. His eyes were open as wide as they could and his lips were stretched to their limits, giving him the appearance of a buff, black skeleton.

When he managed to reach Vicky, he grabbed the princess and lifted her off the ground, then turned towards the queen. Whether he could think or not, it seemed the singular thought in his mind was to get the royals to safety.

That's when he heard it, another high pitched scream in his ear.

"NOOO," he screamed, his voice cracking as he ignored his disabilities. He dashed to the queen, grabbed her, then started to chant.

"Chainmail, chainmail, chainmail, chainmail, chainmail," over and over again, creating layer upon layer of thick chains on both the queen and her daughter. The pitch rose as Eric encased the two royals in repeated layers chains. When it reached a certain point, Eric shouted, "Hammer toss!" A line of chains linked the two balls of chains that encased Vicky and her mother, then Eric grabbed it and ran as far as he could before running out.

"FIND MY FRIENDS!" he shouted, then pulled with all of his might on the two balls. They gained immediate air, flying straight over Eric's head and beyond the walls of the cathedral within moments. Eric wanted to break down from the pain, to lose his mind as the high pitched noise reached it's crescendo.

Right before everything went white, a small message appeared in front of him.

Vicky didn't quite understand what Eric had done, but she was suddenly miles away from the cathedral encased entirely in chains. She couldn't move, could barely breathe, but she could see the cathedral a great distance away. Everything that had happened was slowly being processed in her mind, then she saw it.

A beam of light descended from the heavens, illuminating the world for miles around. It hit somewhere inside of the cathedral, but Vicky could feel the ground shake even from where she was.

The chains around her disappeared, letting her drop onto the ground. Her mind slowly caught up to the situation, tears filling her eyes as she started to realize what had happened.

"No," she mouthed, "no, no, no! Eric!" The princess lay there, feeling a sinking feeling as she pictured the blackened corpse that must have been left after that second blast. The princess cried, it was the only thing she could think to do. Despair reached her heart, and she cried to the world, swearing at the church and the pope specifically.

The last thing that Eric said came to mind. Find my friends. Vicky looked at her mother, feeling the tears almost ready to burst. She clenched her eyes shut, demanding that her sadness be saved for later. Right now, she had something she had to do.

Standing at the edge of a crater, the pope, two deacons, and a host of holy soldiers were all staring at the deep hole that had been made by the devestating beam.

"That was quite effective," one of the deacons remarked.

"All that power for just one person?" the other deacon clarified angrily. "We nearly had to drain the Celestial Clock to fire it a second time."

"Now, now," the pope calmed his arguing delegates, "the Celestial Clock holds ten thousand years of natural magic. Firing such a simple cannon would hardly drain the clock in it's entirety."

The three men all stopped talking as a flare of heat surged from the pit. The soldiers all sorrounded the scorched abyss, drawing their swords as if preparing for a monster to emerge.

"There's no way," remarked both of the deacons, staring in awe at the edge of the pit.

Time seemed to slow as the group waited for some sort of movement, but the only ones who moved were the soldiers who repositioned themselves for comfort. Everyone's heart beat heavily agaisnt their chests, but even after several minutes passed there were no signs of life from inside of the crater.

The pope breathed a sigh of relief, and the two aides laughed at their foolishness. Nobody could have survived the kind of power that the church had invested in the beam. The pope stepped forward fearlessly, going over to the crater and leaning over it to look for himself. The pure darkness that enveloped the deep hole was impenetrable, making the entire hole appear bottomless.

"This is what happens when you go against god!" the pope yelled into the pit, a thin smile appearing on his lips.

The smile disappeared when a tiny flash of light appeared and disappeared inside of the hole.
