《The Greatest Gene》The Beginning

Cain exhaled as he fell back on his bed, exhausted. He had failed so many times he forgot how many times he tried in the first place. He was currently a student taking the path of genetic evolution as all people dream to do. His parents died when he was young but left behind a small fortune, enough for him to last until now and enrol into school.
Unfortunately it seemed he had no talent whatsoever, he had always wanted to be a Genetic Warrior, but everyone in this world has the same dream so he was just one among the masses. The path of the Genetic Warrior was one of power, in this world, where the strong rule supreme, without power you can only sit back and be another one of the billions stuck in mediocrity.
Earth had long ago gone through a scientific explosion, space travel, teleportation, a whole universe to explore. The world was in a new golden age where heroes were being born everyday, but among the discovers the path of the genetic warrior was the greatest one. Human’s figured out how to dig deep into their own DNA and unravel the infinite power hidden in the human body.
Becoming a Genetic Warrior required talent but it was like a fish leaping across the dragon's gate. Once you become one, the treatment you receive is incomparable, wealth, women, power, anything you could ever want, you will get. Cain’s only hope left was to become a Genetic Warrior, his money was running out and if he fails to awaken his dormant genes, he will have to drop out of school and take whatever work was offered to him.
He refused to fail however, his will had already become unbreakable due to all the failures he had gone through. He constantly cultivated and searched his body, in hopes of finding a dormant gene to awaken, even among Genetic Warriors there were grades.

Some awaken weak genes, some awaken stronger ones, however just awakening a gene is enough, even if one’s gene is weak, they can strengthen and evolve it through hard work, and if they manage to awaken another gene and fuse it with their original gene, then they can create a higher level one. Though cases of people with weak genes overcoming the talented figures are rare, Cain just wanted hope, whether his gene was weak or not he didn't care, he just wanted to find the light at the end of the tunnel.
However after a full day of trying, he gave up. His body was completely out of fuel. He quickly checked his stats, this was a common gene given to people called the inner vision gene, that put the bodies strength into numerical value. The school gave one to every student as it was part of the enrollment fee.
This was why the rich got stronger, they didn't need to worry about awakening dormant genes, another way of gaining genes is by purchasing them and fusing them into their bodies. However for Cain who was already broke, this was naturally not a possibility, without the talent the only thing poor people can do is give up.
Cain used his inner look gene that he had long ago fused with and saw his stats pop up.
Strength: 1.5
Speed: 0.8
Defense: 1.5
Genes: Inner Vision : Level - 1
1 was the regular stat for a grown man, so Cain was a bit stronger than a regular person, but compared to Genetic Warriors he would get crushed with a single finger. All his years of training and he only had these stats to show for it, other people in his class had already awoken their genes and were just wondering which college they should head to, he however was worrying about what he was going to do in the future.

He was at the back of his class, his grades were good but in this world ruled with strength people didn’t really care what your grades were as long as you had the talent. Schools now focused completely on training youth to become Genetic Warriors, as long as you could become one of your grades were irrelevant.
On top of that the powerful were naturally smart, speed also raised a person's mind power, allowing them to process things faster. Even if they wanted to be stupid it was difficult. Tomorrow was the day of the final test, unless someone's overall stat average reached 2, they wouldn’t even be allowed to take the test.
Unless Cain managed to awaken a gene by some miracle, his path ended here. Cain quickly sat back up and refused to give up, his body was already strained to the limit and he was covered with sweat but his determination was stronger than ever. He proceeded to cultivate and entered his inner world, he saw the myriad of genes within him, however the vast majority of them were under lock and key and couldn't be awoken.
He had to find one that was open and then awaken it completely, gaining access to its genetic powers. Talented people had plenty of genes that were open for them to awaken, so their worries did not lay in finding a gene to awaken, but instead finding the best one. Cain had already looked through his body for years, since his first day of school when he started the process he hasn’t stopped, it had been four years since then and graduation was soon, but he had not even searched 1% of his body yet.
The body was akin to a universe, and each gene was a star. One would think that you would have no problem finding a gene to awaken in such a massive world, they would be wrong. Had they been so simple to find everyone would be a Genetic Warrior. Suddenly as Cain was searching for what seemed to be his last time, he saw something, a small star that was completely black, had he not be focusing hard enough he would have missed it completely. Comparing this star to the others was like comparing an ant to an elephant, Cain didn’t care and his heart pounded with excitement as he dove right towards this small insignificant star.

Eight
His name is Eight. Not really, but that’s what the System decided after a slip of the tongue. One moment, he was stepping out the office door on the way home, and the next waking up on a hillside below a town wall. Oh, and the gate guard drove him off, because he thought Eight was a monster. Life’s tough when you’re trapped in an eight-year old body on another world. The first book focuses on Eight's survival on a dangerous new world. If you're a fan of Gary Paulsen's Hatchet, you'll enjoy it. The story is one of discovery, bushcraft, and finding one's way. Note that, while this is very much LitRPG, progression is slow, and Eight spends much of the first book alone. The second book recounts what happens when Eight and friends head east to the village of Voorhei. Expect a blend of fantasy adventure, ghost story, cozy mystery, and family drama. Books one and two make a complete story, while book 3 has just gotten underway.

Apex Predator
Earth is a fairly small place, but it's all Bath has. It's the only home he's ever known for all of his 500-or-so-million years of life. One day, Bath realized his treasured Earth was being drawn into the next mass extinction ahead of schedule. So, fascinated by the humans and their quick rise to power (after all, setting off a mass extinction is a pretty sizable achievement), what's a nearly all-powerful, somewhat bored, morally ambiguous, savagely violent, shapeshifting alien entity to do other than assume the form of a human and do some front-line investigating? Little did Bath know he would soon stumble upon a mysterious human organization with a gate leading to planets eons away. And that's just the beginning... A story with aliens, intergalactic space travel, mind powers, and an abundance of adventure! Author's note: ON HIATUS! Hello and thank you for reading! Constructive criticism and grammar-policing are both appreciated. Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are complete at 1271 pages! Part 7 is in progress! If you've ever read any other web serials, you might've noticed that authors get better with time (that is, their art or writing improves). Wutosama of Metaworld Chronicles noted that the first 20 chaps are always a mess. This is also the case with Apex Predator. The first two parts (ranging just under 30 chapters, or 161 pages) are absolutely subpar. While I have edited them as of 7-10-18, they require a rewrite, which is currently in the works but not complete. For a sample that gives insight into what the latter ~80% of the story's writing style is like, check out chapter 56. Vote for Apex Predator on Top Web Fiction! The Apex Predator Discord is here. Cover: original work done by me, the author, caerulex.

The World System
James Harbor was on his way home from a night shift when his world and his SUV was turned sideways, literally, by a giant beast. With a dark sense of humor, a fair bit of intelligence, and scorn for his fellow man dont expect our protaginist to be a sefless sacrificing hero out to save the world from itself. Instead join a man driven by his whims and given an unexpected headstart in the race for survival. ------------ This story is going to be refined slowly as I write new chapters, cleaning up grammar, typos, repeats, elements placed wrong, etc, I do my own proof-reading which is far from perfect so expect older chapters to be updated frequently with revisions. Release schedule will probably be at least 1 chapter a week.

Hiraeth | Regulus Black
The Avery family were one of the few truly pureblood wizarding families left in society. They took pride in a long line of thoroughly talented witches and wizards who all bore the proud status as not only pureblood, but also Slytherins. Lucas Avery was perhaps the most prominent Avery. The boy who befriended Tom Riddle and was part of the Slug Club during his time at Hogwarts. One of the first Death Eaters, he showed tremendous loyalty towards his friend and master Lord Voldemort during his first rise to power. Not only was Lucas active in his duties, he also raised two children to carry his respect into the next generation. One of his children did this with great dignity and honour... Whilst the other did not. Esmeralda (Esme) Avery never truly fit in anywhere. No matter how hard she tried. This case of isolation is perhaps what led Esme to rebel so fearlessly against what was expected against her. Then, in her sixth year at Hogwarts, she did something extraordinary. Not only was this one last desperate escape from the traumatic woes facing her at home, it also cemented her future. One fateful evening would lead Esme not only on a path of discovery but also fear and heartache. Are there any other kind of stories during Voldemort's first rise to power?
