《The Abyss Gazer》Chapter 6:I can hear the marching feet

If the Inquisition is the dagger and the Clergy is the bandage, then the Order of Templars is the shield and sword of the Church. Born with the church itself, this brotherhood of warriors has always stood between the faithful and the evil, be it heretics, demons or monsters. Even if they may fail their attack they shall not fail in their defense,f or to protect the just, the Templars shall die the earth in their blood. May those that taint themselves with the dark arts know the true meaning of justice when standing in their way"
History of Holy Light, The Templars, prologue
"My lord,t hat was amazing! Not only the adventurers, you freed us from those Gorwyn bastards!"
"That... wasn't part of the plan..."
Andrew and Golind were discussing about the "excessive" success of the poison in the goblin's house.
"Who cares!.... Sorry, i mean, it doesn't matter, now we're free, we don't have to worry about no-"
"Actually, this is bad, like real bad"
"Why is that?"
"Golind, an entire city was turned into a den of zombies, do you think no one will do anything about that?"
"Eeeehm, yes...?"
"Well, you're wrong, now they will probably send an entire army to investigate the reason"
".....Shit"
"Don't panic, we can deal with this ,even if i don't know how"
As Andrew was thinking of what to do, one of the young goblins scouts barged in.
"LEADER, LEADER!"
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!? ME AND THE LORD ARE TALKING ABOUT IMPORTANT THINGS!"
"I know, but, *heavy breathing* there's a lot of humans around the city"
Golind almost fell off his chair and Andrew's mouth widened.
"Wait, so fucking soon?!? Are you serious?!?"(Andrew)
"How many are there?"(Golind)
"I'm not too sure, but i think at least..... a thousand"
This time Golind did fall off his chair.
"What?!? That's like double the people in Gorwyn before my lord's punishment!"(Golind")
"Do you know who they are?"(Andrew)
"No, i don't. The majority of them are wearing white armor with a cross surrounded by some kind of sun drawing and the others look like high-ranking adventurers"
"Could they be the servants of Lux? Murgin told me they have a pretty active Inquisition"(Andrew)
"THE LUX INQUISITION?!? WE'RE DOOMED!"(Golind)
"Why do you say that?"(Andrew)
"Every monster knows about them, even if i never saw one of them. They seem to be brutal against anyone who disobeys the rules of their church and they specialize in hunting demons and black mages. Some of them are so ruthless that they use black magic themselves"(Golind)

"Uhm, they seem to be a problem, i'm gonna ask Murgin for advice"(Andrew)
"As you wish my lord"(Golind)
Andrew got up from his chair and began to walk towards the Altar
"I hope my lord is ok...."(Golind)
"I hope so too"
"Wait, you're still here? GET TO WORK!"
"Y-YES, LEADER!"
At the Altar of the Abyss, some minutes later
Andrew entered the ruins, that somehow looked better, with more columns and rebuilt walls. And when he looked at the Altar
it looked bigger and with more decorations.
"MUUUUUURGIIIIIIIIIIN"
"Dammit, kid, you don't have to scream so much, i hear you.So, what do you think of my new arrangement? Looks ominous enough, no?"
"It does, it does, but how did you do it?"
"You know for divine beings faith equals power, and this reflects on the Altars and temples, so, more faith, more power, better temples"
"Interesting. But that's not what i want to talk about with you"
"You want to talk about the thousand templars you brought to my door, along with some unlucky adventurers who have to deal with them?"
"....Yes. Anyway, templars? I though they were Inquisitors"
"Oh, the Inquisition wouldn't move its forces for something like this, they only deal with secretive stuff or emergencies"
"The destruction of an entire city isn't an emergency for them?"
"A small, unimportant border city, which doesn't even have a church, just a small plaza with a statue of Lux. Still it's not like they would just leave the matter alone, i mean, you made an undead infestation, if it was bandits or goblins they would have sent the army of Kieris, and it would be just a small scout regiment"
"I see... but what do the templars do?"
"Well, they're like the Church's personal army, they deal with any outright assault of dark forces and protect religious locations"
"Ok, but how do i beat them?"
"Why do you ask me, i gave you power, knowledge and a badass sword you didn't even bother to use, shame on you. About that, where did you put my dear Perditor?"
"I put it in [Shadow Pocket]. It's really handy, it's basically like a portable warehouse"
"Yes, treat a complex infinite pocket dimension that would cost the sacrifice of 10 people to create like a warehouse, after all it's not that special"
"Oh, i didn't mean to offend you"
"Uuuuuuugh, just go do your job. Also, soon you'll have to leave the village, after all you can't only help those guys, you already did enough for them ,deal with the templars and let them be"

"Wait, i'm supposed to help monsters"
"So you'll stay there forever, protecting it from the infinite attacks that the news of your slaughters will cause?"
"I guess you're right, but i'll find a way to solve their problems definitely, it's my duty"
"As you wish ,now go out there and break the legs of those templars"
"Ehm, i think you mean break a leg"
"Nope,i meant what i said"
"Oh.... ok, bye"
So Andrew began walking back to the village, but Murgin seemed to be mumbling to himself.
"Shit, that was embarrassing, how could i mistake such a simple saying? Thank Dark i saved it. Good job Murgin"
He patted himself on the back, while Nox was sighing behind him, regretting the fact that his master was so prideful about the stupidest things.
Gorwyn,at the same time
A young man was sitting in the ruin of what was once the mayor's house, which was now his personal office. The man wasn't particularly tall, but he had an incredibly handsome face, ing, blond, blond hair and green eyes, he also wore a white silver armor with a blue cape decorated with a cross surrounded by a sun, the symbol of Lux, that made him look like a fairy tail prince, the kind of looks that would make women faint. He was staring at the window of the office, thinking on how to please his goddess. He knew Gorwyn was destroyed by an undead outbreak that was spread by rats and that the cause were the cursed leaves, but he still didn't know how they were cursed. It could have been a powerful black mage, a leak of Miasma or
they were always like this and that was just natural defense. Whatever the reason he would have definitely eliminated it with haste. That was the resolve of Lorn Whitesteel, fourth son of the Whitesteel family, one of the most faithful and strong families of the Church.
"Commander Lorn, we have finished scouting the forest"
"Very well, what did you find?"
"The only notable things we found were a village of goblins and some ruins beyond it"
"The goblins couldn't have been the cause of the poisoning, anything about the temple?"
"Well, it had a powerful barrier ,so we couldn't get near it, but it seems to be a Devil's temple"
"That would explain the sudden curse of the leaves. Make preparations to send two hundred men to the village, it may seem like too much for a bunch of goblins, but you never know what beasts serving Devils are capable of"
"As you wish, commander!"
"Before you go, how is the cohabitation with the adventurers going?"
"Heeeee.... There have been quite a few fights, captain. Mostly because our brothers keep offending them due to their mercenary style of living"
"How can they be so immature? They may be not loyal servants of the Goddess, but they're precious allies against the darkness we're going to face. Warn them to calm down and punish all the ones that cause trouble"
"Yes, commander!"
And so the man got out of the mansion, leaving Lorn with a great feeling of fear for what's to come
"The power to curse almost an entire forest... No normal black mage would be capable of such a feat, unless he used an enormous amount of sacrifices. And the ruins... I fear that we're dealing with a powerful demon"
He looked out of the window, as he was watching his own Goddess
"Please, protect us and bask us in your glory"
Saying so, after dealing with some documents, he went out the mansion, towards the scout squad ,which was still being organized, and headed towards the one who would guide them, Senior Priest Drum, an old and trusted veteran.
"Oh, kiddo, what brings you to this humble old man?"
"I came to see how are you doing. Are you ready?"
"Of course i'm ready kiddo, i've done this thousands of times, with all the experience i got, i should be Pope"
"Yes, yes, just take care"
"Of course, kiddo. Even if you're my superior, i'm still stronger than you, ya know? Oh, it seems we're ready. Well, see ya later"
"Yes,see you"
Drum turned himself to watch his men, and after analyzing them for a minute he began shouting.
"BROTHERS, WE'RE GOING ON A HOLY MISSION TO PURIFY THE EVIL FROM THIS LAND,BE READY!"
"FOR THE GODDESS!"(Soldiers)
"THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO HEAR! LET'S GO!"
The two hundred men began marching into the forest, following the wide road that was built by the adventurers, till they were nowhere to be seen.
But Lorn was still uneasy.
"I have a bad feeling about this"
He held on tight to the sword he had in his waist"
"Goddess, please protect them"

Demons Don't Lie
Algier, average human and recent convict, has committed the gravest sin of all: demon slaying. His fate? To participate in the Culling, a battle-royale style tournament that’s televised live to the world, where all the worst criminals go to die. As with all tournaments, a prize is on the line. If Algier survives, he can have any wish granted by the Marquises, the new rulers of Earth following the demons’ invasion. However, there’s little hope for survival in a tournament designed to have demons do the work of the executioner, especially for a human. Demons are stronger, faster, wiser, and more talented than the average human, and, despite his crime, Algier is no demon hunter. Mentally defeated before the tournament even begins, Algier is torn between becoming another demon’s points and fighting on in his dead mother’s legacy. But should he choose to fight, there is one advantage that Algier has that can tip the odds in his favour: Demons don’t lie, but humans can. How to read this story Demons Don't Lie is written from the perspective of an unreliable (lying) narrator. There are many inconsistencies within the story which are placed there intentionally. It's up to the reader to decide what is the truth and what is the lie. Promotion Full quality cover image
