《Ambassadors to another world》Chapter 42: Man of science meets woman of magic

Burning Rose was having a relatively normal day today and by normal, it meant spending the entire day holed up inside a chamber practicing spells non-stop. While her skills and talent are leagues above her age group, she knows that she has a lot to learn. She will keep practicing one spell over and over again until she gets the perfect result.
To her Magic was life and nothing else mattered.
“Hmm I see” Burning Rose said as she read from a thick magic book.
“It seems I’m doing something wrong with gathering and focusing Mana for this spell, hence why it always comes out wrong”
She then stretched out her hand and prepared to chant but she was interrupted by Silver Eye suddenly entering the chamber. He looked like he was in a hurry from the way he carried himself.
“Ah there you are my pupil!” Silver Eye said as he quickly approached Burning Rose.
Although he was smiling, Burning Rose could feel that something was off. She didn’t know why but she felt like she was walking into some sort of eternal trap.
Still being the ““respectful”” pupil that she is, she ignored all these alarms ringing in her head and approached the old man.
“What is it teacher?” Burning Rose politely asked the old man
“Come with me my dear pupil.” He said as he put his hand on top of Burning Rose’s head giving her a head pat.
“I have someone I’d like you to meet.” Silver eye said with a smile.
Burning Rose instantly knew who it was.
“So, the Outsider has arrived huh?” She said with a little hint of frustration yet she didn’t voice any kind of objection this time.
“Yes, he’s waiting for us in my study. Come now we mustn’t make him wait too long” Silver Eye said in an uncharacteristic joyful and enthusiastic tone.

The alarms in Burning Rose’s head were now blaring even louder.
They then reached the Grand Scholar’s private study in a few moments. Silver Eye opened the door and she followed him inside, then she saw a man sitting in front of the Grand Scholar’s desk.
A tall man with weird looking clothes, blonde hair, and blue eyes. It was him, the man from the banquet.
Burning Rose and the Blonde man’s eyes met for a second but it felt like an eternity, and suddenly all hell broke loose.
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH IT’S YOU! I KNEW IT!” Both of them screamed at the same time.
“WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS GRAND SCHOLAR?”
“WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS TEACHER?”
The two of them looked at the old man, but quickly directed their attentions to one another immediately.
“YOU, I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU DID!”
“YOU, I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU DID!”
Then the two of them were taken a back for a bit but continued on anyway.
“STOP THAT!”
“STOP THAT!”
………..
“STOP WHAT?”
“STOP WHAT?”
?????????
“THIS! STOP IT!”
“THIS! STOP IT!”
?????????????
“STOP COPYING WHAT I SAY!”
“STOP COPYING WHAT I SAY!”
????????????????????
“I SAID STOP IT!”
“I SAID STOP IT!”
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Silver Eye then interrupted their very lively exchange, he was obviously enjoying the show but he already had his fill and decided to calm the situation down before it escalates any further.
“Ahem, that’s enough Prof. Karl and Scholar Burning Rose.” Silver Eye exclaimed immediately stopping the bickering pair.
“You’re both adults so please act like it.” Silver Eye said in a stern voice.
Upon hearing this Karl realized that he was acting inappropriately for someone who was learned. He took a deep breath and calmed himself down regaining his composure. He straightened himself and assumed his usual professional posture.

Burning Rose on the other hand was still fuming with anger. Her petty and childish side completely overwhelming her logical side, but her teacher’s words held her off. Unlike Karl she wasn’t able to immediately regain her composure. She was pouting angrily like a child while glaring at Karl.
Karl however just looked her straight in the eye and the two were locked in a staring contest.
“Now that at least one of you has calmed down, let me do your introductions for you.” Silver Eye said in a rather happy tone.
“Professor Karl, This is my Pupil Scholar Burning Rose.” Silver Eye said as he placed his hand on Burning Rose’s head.
With this action Burning Rose finally regained her composure, although her mood was still sour.
“And this man right here is Professor Karl Hoffman, a very learned man from another world.”. Silver Eye continued.
“You two will be partners from today onwards on your quest to unlock the secrets of Magic!” Silver Eye declared as he removed his hand from Burning Rose’s head.
Karl once again took a deep breath and walked closer to Burning Rose, his professionalism now kicking in. While he was on Earth he had worked closely with people he didn’t like, yet for the sake a shared goal he would cast aside his personal feelings and willingly join hands with them. He put on a straight face and stretched out his hand towards Burning Rose gesturing for a handshake.
“Good day to you Scholar. I am Professor Karl Hoffman of the Berlin science institute sent here to study magic” Karl introduced himself again.
Burning Rose was quite perplexed by Karl’s sudden turn, but at the same time she felt like she didn’t want to lose. Her pride now kicked and compelling her to return this gesture towards the Outsider.
“Good day to you too professor. I am Scholar Burning Rose of the Dawnward Magic Institute” She then grabbed Karl’s hand, but she gave it a rather strong grip.
Karl however returned the gesture.
The two were then locked in a silent confrontation with no one willing to back down, but despite this Silver Eye was happy with what he was witnessing.
It might be messy for now but he knows these two will bring forth a golden age for Magic, despite them obviously not getting along at this time thanks to Burning Rose’s banquet antics. Yet he knows that these two would not stay like this for very long.
He doesn’t have any sort of proof but he believed it regardless, Why? Because it was what his intuition was telling him.
And so far when it came to magic, it never failed him.

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx.
