《Ambassadors to another world》Chapter 11: Laser weapons vs Particle beams

Larien village, while relieved that they were saved from impending doom, was not in the mood to celebrate. Mixed emotions can be felt in the air, joy, awe, disbelief, and fear. While the villagers thanked the thanked the Outsiders with all their heart, the adventurers and the merchants felt a growing pressure in their hearts. They never imagined the Outsiders to be this powerful, and quite frankly, they underestimated their power. In the two years they have stayed in Nelithea they haven’t done anything. Sure they knew about the Outsiders defending the village from a demonic horde but this is the first time they ever saw them in action, and this was beyond their expectations.
Roman and his party felt the same way. The little sorceress Laura who was on the verge of collapse from overuse of magic found the strength to stand and watch the incredible scene that unfolded in the skies above. The battle, if you could even call it that, didn’t even last 5 minutes and it looked like the metal bird was even toying with the three legendary beasts. Nevertheless it was still a spectacle to behold.
“W-what just happened?” Roman asked still recovering from shock.
“I don’t understand it myself, it looked like the Manticores were defeated. Can somebody pinch me?” Ella said with disbelief drawn all over her face. Roman obliged, and with that stinging sensation on her cheek she realized she wasn’t dreaming.
“What incredible power” Draug exclaimed, his words filled with respect and awe.
“What kind of weapon was that?” The little sorceress Laura asked in her confusion. “Weren’t the outsiders incapable of using magic? How can that metal bird fly? Not even the Gryphons of the Royal sky knights are capable of those moves.” She exclaimed
“And that final attack, I don’t understand it at all! How did the Manticore suddenly get a gaping hole through the length of its body? It just happened in an instant and without warning!” She kept mumbling to herself loudly and none of her friends paid any attention to her. They were still in a state of shock after all.

Suddenly a man in weird clothing approached the group of adventurers with a smug smile on his face. He had blonde hair, blue eyes, and was quite tall. If it wasn’t for his weird clothing they would have mistaken him for Royalty, but they knew his origin instantly. He was an outsider.
He then approached Laura, still sporting a smug smile, and asked her “Do you want to know what happened during that last attack, little girl?” The man asked her in a proud tone.
Laura hated being called a little girl, but because of the combination of shock and curiosity, she completely ignored those words and gently nodded her head. The man’s response however made even more confused.
“Well then let me explain!” the man smugly exclaimed.
“What you just witnessed, well not really witnessed but still, is a high powered Laser weapon!” the man declared raising even more confusion among the people listening to him. “Fret not, I will explain just how the weapon works as clearly as I can” The man continued slapping himself in the chest triumphantly
“A laser is a beam of light concentrated to a one point” The man wasn’t making any sense at this point if they didn’t know he was an Outsider they would have dismissed him as some kind of crazy person. Even still the man continued on with his explanation.
“Let me ask you a question little girl, why do you think we can’t see in the dark?” The man asked Laura
“B-because there is no light?” Laura replied
“PRECISELY!” The man enthusiastically replied
“You see, the reason we can even see the world around us is because of light, but there is more to it than that! Light is actually a wave and a particle, but for simplicity’s sake, I will only explain the wave part”

“Wave? Parti-what?”
“You see Light, as a wave, bounces off objects. This wave then enters our eyes and forms an image for our brain. However objects only reflect a specific wavelength of light, oh and by the way a wavelength is a measure of the distance between the crests of a wave, but you don’t need to think too hard about it.”The man said with a smile on his face
Of course no one understood what he said, but continued anyway
“So, given that information what can you infer about the laser weapon?” The man asked the little girl.
“Uh, it concentrates the light to a specific point therefore it doesn’t enter our eyes?” The little girl replied meekly.
“CORRECT! But that’s just half the answer because there is actually light invisible to us, well its radiation to be more exact but for the sake of simplicity again, I will continue to refer to it as light. The Laser weapon uses this Invisible light and concentrates it to a single point. However if “light” is used this way, it becomes a very powerful and lethal weapon capable of untold destruction.” The man declared, yet he it didn’t seem he was going to stop any time soon.
“Truth be told, I prefer Particle beams to this lasers but those are more effective in space since there is no atmosphere to interfere with the stream of particles. Oh if you’re wondering what particles are they are-” suddenly the blonde man was interrupted by another weirdly dressed man with brown hair.
“You seem to be enjoying yourself there Professor, I knew a man of science you just couldn’t stop yourself from spreading knowledge across the land!” He exclaimed
“N-no you’re wrong, I simply wanted to enlighten this little girl who was confused about laser weapons!” the blonde man replied bashfully.
“Well that’s enough of your lecture today Professor Karl” A tall dark skinned man donning a metallic armor approached them. “We should head back to base right now. Things are a bit too chaotic for my liking”
“Oh, okay then. Let’s go” The Blonde man said as he walked away along with the man in armor and the man with brown hair. He didn’t even look back at the people he conversed with.
“Do you believe any of that? Invisible light? What is talking about?” He said in a confused tone. “Man these outsiders are crazy am I right Laura?”
Laura however was unresponsive for a short while, quietly pondering and processing the new information she received.
“Outsiders, what a strange and peculiar people” Laura thought to herself as she finally snapped back to reality and joined her companions.

Old Riding Author Lunatic Asylum
Just off the A19, in the dark, incomprehensible lands known as Yorkshire, there lies a town. A town where shadow-silent alleys glint with the secret hunger of knives. Where blood soaks the chipboard window shutters of forsaken terraces stretching off into the night. Where the smog-choked air rattles with the depraved laughter echoing out from clubs that can only generously be described as post-apocalyptic. Well, that’s Middlesbrough. But down the A19 a bit (an impossibly long way down, actually) there lies another town: Raughnen, in the ancient, forgotten Old Riding. It is an equal match in muggery and thuggery alike. It also has magic spells and pointy wizard hats. And now, across the miles and across all sensibilities, a pretty nasty power (a magic one) calls out for its pretty nasty counterpart (a decidedly unmagic one): a proper sound Boro lad. Nothing good can come of it. This is a collection of one novella and four connected short stories: I. A Yorkshire Summoning II. Old Riding Day Trip (the novella) III. Heaven is a Parmo IV. Death on the 66 V. Death on the 257 In total, this comprises 34 chapters totalling around 35,000 words, so try not to worry. It will be over relatively quickly. There are three more short stories with more tenuous links to the core collection: Rush, Paper Round and Scenario 79: Sausage Fingers, all of which can be found in my collection Short Records of Misadventure. Reading these may allow you to make more sense of certain parts of the story, if any sense is to be made at all. NOTE: There are instances of prejudice and discrimination within these stories, including elements of sexism and ageism, which are purely the thoughts and actions of the characters involved and which certainly do not reflect my own views on these matters. ANOTHER NOTE; A WARNING, PERHAPS: This can get a bit weird. In less than 150 pages, we have four viewpoints, first and third person narratives, and a completely disjointed plot with lots of gaps, dead ends and no real resolution. Also ZERO lunatic asylums. It's all a bit odd. If that sort of thing isn't your cup of tea, which it most likely isn't, it might be best to move on now.
