《A Man and His Greatsword》Chapter 3: Goblin Problem

It was dawn when I had woken up. I sat up and wiped the crust from my eyes before getting up and heading to the bathroom to wash my face. After that was done, I checked around the house to find Jane. After waking her up, I asked for permission to use her kitchen, which she granted reluctantly.
I headed into the kitchen with her to look for ingredients. Proceeding to make an omelet with some light seasoning for myself and Jane, I reminisced about the times I used to cook for my roommate back in college. Surprisingly, I gained a skill from this.
New Skill! Cooking: Makes your dishes tastier as this skill levels up Mastery: Beginner 1 Effect: 2%
I didn't mind as I thought this skill would be a good quality of life skill. In my peripherals, Jane walked over to the table and sat down at the table. I placed a plate in front of her and she nodded.
Her stomach began to rumble and she picked up some utensils proceeding to eat the food. I began digging into my own meal. Casting a glance over to Jane, I saw her expression full of surprise. She turned to me to ask a question.
"Did you make this?"
"Yeah."
"Well, it's great." She gave me a smile which shocked me. I wondered how her attitude towards me made a complete 180 from when we just met yesterday. Remembering my greatsword skill, I checked it out while eating.
Greatsword Mastery Increases damage, efficiency of attacks, and ease of use of a greatsword Mastery: Grandmaster 10 Effect: 100%
Content with the skill, I continued eating in joy. After finishing our meal, I took out the armor from my inventory which surprised Jane for a second. She then continued nonchalantly eating it like it was normal.
Apparently, inventories were normal here? Anyways, Jane helped me get dressed in the armor before dressing in her own. We headed over to the smithy to pick up my new weapon. Abel showed it to me. It was a simple looking greatsword, with a 20-centimeter hilt and a blade that was 13 centimeters wide and 1.7-meters long. It had a broad fuller running down the middle of the flat of the blade to reduce weight.

Overall, it was amazing craftsmanship. I gleefully took the blade and observed it from every angle like a kid getting a toy he desperately wanted. There was a small loop near the crossguard of the blade that allowed the blade to be hung on a hook that I could place on the shoulder section of my leather chest-plate. I promptly hooked it on and left with Jane.
Well Made Steel Greatsword Attack: 90(+198) Durability: 54/54(+18) A well-made greatsword crafted by Abel, an experienced blacksmith
I looked over at Jane and asked her if there was anything to be taken care of.
"Well, there is a goblin camp about 2 kilometers away from here, they only have a population of about 60. We could go there since they pose a risk if left for too long." I nodded and went to buy a few more necessities such as some potions just in case. We then left for the camp.
After traveling for about half an hour, we spotted the camp and scouted around just in case some goblin patrols were around. Luckily, there were none. The camp was surrounded by wooden walls. We both agreed to allow one person to be a decoy while the other snuck in and killed them from the inside. I was the decoy. I scouted the entrance of the camp and saw two goblins lazing around.
Goblin Level: 9 Health: 230
Although they were 3 levels higher than the boar, they weren't much stronger. A perfect target for farming. I charged out from the brush and impaled one of the goblins on the wooden wall. It struggled for a few seconds before dying. I pulled out the sword and lopped off the other goblin's head before it could register what happened to its fellow guard.
I charged straight into the camp and was met by about 6 goblins. Swinging my sword in a wide arc, I cut off 4 heads and severely injured the other two. A few arrows came my way and I managed to make it into cover. One arrow managed to pierce my shoulder though.

"Fuck." I said under my breath, as pangs of pain came from the new wound. I grit my teeth as I pulled out the arrow and threw it aside and downed a Health potion to close up the wound. Some notifications popped up but I pushed them aside before checking for any archers. I found that they were gone. Thanking Jane in my head and smiling wickedly, I continued into the camp.
The subjugation had gone smoothly. I even leveled up a couple of times, and my Pain Resistance skill increased in mastery. I distributed half the total points into Strength and the other half into Vitality and Agility. My leadership got a small boost for whatever reason, and I can't seem to distribute points into luck.

Jane and I met up at the front gate to the camp. Suddenly, I got a large feeling of danger and stepped in front of Jane. Leveraging my greatsword's size, I used it to deflect an arrow before she used a bow to snipe the lone goblin.
"Looks like you didn't check properly, Jane." I teased her and gave a smug smile before she turned red in indignation.
"I wish you were hit by that arrow." She turned away pouting. Wait, pouting? I stared at her confused, is this really how a 23-year-old woman should act? After a few minutes, I suggested that we head back now and she readily agreed. It was about 10 AM when we arrived back at the village, we decided to take a break for now.
"Thanks.", said a quiet voice behind me. I turned around and stared at the flustered fox. She noticed my stare.
"What? I just wanted to thank you for saving me..." She looked away flustered. I gave her a gentle smile.
"No problem, Jane." I noticed that I gained two new skills from the arrow incident.
New Skill! Danger Sense The ability to sense incoming danger instinctively; a higher mastery allows you to sense danger more precisely and quickly Mastery: Beginner 3 Effect: 6% New Skill! Deflect A more advanced version of Parry, allows you to deflect blows from melee and ranged weapons alike; A higher mastery allows for more precise timing on deflects Mastery: Beginner 3 Effect: 6%
These skills excited me as they would be extremely useful in combat for all sorts of reasons. I returned to Jane's house as she had to report the subjugation to the elder. Deciding to take a small nap, I stored my armor and greatsword in my inventory before falling asleep on the bed I was borrowing.

The Gambit
The kingdoms have rarely experienced peace, with kings and rulers warring against each other on any percieved slight. With explorers riding the waves to find new lands and merchants eager to set up trade routes while profiting as much as possible. Would the status quo still hold up? The veil is already weakining as more magic and horrors seep through the gap. How would the world deal with the sudden increase in the limited resource of magic? With the times changing, barren lands become trade hubs and the power shifts. The system holding it all together, is in a fragile balance, would a single death break the balance and cause the most devastating war the people have experienced. The direction of the story : The story will not contain any main protagonist, rather multiple protagonists and antagonists with the protagonists having bad some character traits and the antagonists some good ones. I plan to make a story of flawed humans, so if you are looking for OP MCs you would not enjoy it. But I still hope you give it a try. This is my first time writing and I am doing it to get better, so any suggestion or criticism is welcome. I am a university student, so do not expect a robust upload schedule, I'll try to put out 2 chapters a week, but there might be some delays. I apologize for it in advance. P.s. English is not my native language, so there might be some errors, though I tried to mitigate them as much as possible.
