《Philippine Lore》BK1; Chapter 34: [ I'll give you war! ]

The man protecting the young woman gruffly cried out, “I never thought that we would meet such a monster this early! What should we do?”
The young woman’s face was already pale, and blood oozed from her mouth. There was despair in her eyes but also determination.
Turning to the two people protecting her, she said, “Don’t worry about me and leave while you can!”
The two people looked nervous. They were about to say something when the young woman glared, indicating that they shouldn’t speak.
“I can only stall this dumb*ss for a couple of minutes, use that time to escape!” She was squatting on the ground and breathing heavily, her pretty face was as white as the snow.
Hearing the young woman’s orders, the two player’s body trembled. They seemed to be hesitating whether they would stay or run away.
Standing on a tree branch, Rain was watching them with full interest. He wanted to know if the other two would really abandon the young woman or stay and to the bitter end. This is not something you would see every day in the real world~
“I’ll bet 100 pesos that they will certainly run away leaving that woman…”
Just as Rain finished his sentence, he suddenly frowned and felt something coming from behind him. He jumped aside unconsciously and escaped an attack from behind.
Phew!
What attacked him was a cane branch, which looked like tree branches, but thicker. It was glossy red and covered with barbs; it truly was a ferocious weapon.
And then not long after, Rain once again heard a short scream while he managed to escape. The man beside the woman who seemed to have made up his mind and turned around was pulled up by a branch on his ankle. He was then hung upside down and soon disappeared in the fog.
“Michael!!” Witnessing the man being towed away, the other girl could only scream the man’s name.
However, unlike the other girl who was screaming her lungs out, the woman wearing a bronze armor raised her head in Rain’s direction and saw him and was stunned immediately.

“W-who, who are you?!”
“Just a passerby~” Rain shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly as he gracefully landed to the ground like a cat.
Looking at his appearance; a creepy looking skeleton armor while wearing an animal skull mask… the young woman didn’t know how to react.
What kind of get up is that? Can that still be called as armor?
But it really looks like a high level armor… who was this guy?
“A-are you here to help us?” The other girl beside the beautiful woman asked anxiously.
“Hm…” Rain paused for a moment and then said: “Nope, I’m just buying soy sauce~”
““Eh?””
--- ---
Rain stood there silently for a moment before turning to leave. He had no desire to participate in what was happening. Considering they were neither kith nor kin, it would not be worthwhile for him to take any action.
Besides, he wasn’t completely confident in being able to take on that horrifying monster. That was especially so considering that this tree monster gave him the same sense of danger that the Big Bad Wolf and Sister spider had.
This tree monster shouldn’t be that simple.
Although he certainly came here to save someone if he could, however, the monster is just too much for him to handle. His own life was still more important compared to some people he didn’t know.
As for the two girls, their shock expression was beyond incredible. After all, although they don’t know who Rain was but most girls have a little hero worship plot, and they were not the exception.
They also longed for a hero they don’t know but still saved them in the midst of danger even a little bit. But who would have known that the man in front of them would say such thing without hesitation.
“W-what did you say?!” The other girl seemed to have received a fatal blow, and she flailed her limbs in indignation.
The beautiful woman was much calmer than her. It seemed like she had somewhat expected Rain’s response and could only bit her lower lip in frustration.

Rain ignored the two and began walking but on his third step, he suddenly heard something from the ground.
There are noises in the ground.
No way!
His heart thumped loudly, and he immediately turned around the two girls who was crouching in the ground and yelled: “Scatter, scatter now!”
At first, the two girls was surprised by Rain’s cry, however, it seemed like the beautiful woman noticed something and instantly pushed the other girl to the sides, and the two of them separated from each other.
From their respective positions, two thick vines sprang from the ground.
[ You have been attacked! ]
[ Makopa Monster Treant! Lv 8 ]
The Makopa Tree did not expect the insects in front of it to foresee its attack, and the roots received Rain’s attack without being prepared for it.
Rain held his rusty iron sword and cleaved into the center of the vines that were as thick as a bucket. It bit deeply into them, and crimson flames immediately burst forth, burning them with a crackling sound.
The Makopa Tree trembled in pain from the attack, and the entire valley reverberated with a buzz.
Rain only focused on attacking and didn’t see the two girl’s expression. It was a face of surprise to the extreme.
They really didn’t expect Rain’s prowess. His attack was flawless and all of it exudes enormous power.
Looking at the retreating vines, Rain immediately breathes a sigh of relief and then continued walking away. He really didn’t want to fight that monster so might as well immediately escape.
“Y-you’re really leaving?!” A voice reverberated behind him.
Hearing the question, Rain turned around and faced the two girls: “Of course, I’m no match for that monster. I’ll just be seeking death fighting it~”
“B-But you are so strong!”
Rain shrugged his shoulders. “Even if I am missy, however, that monster’s tentacles are very difficult to deal with. I’m not a princess knight who wanted to get harassed by tentacles, I’m just a normal passerby you can find just about anywhere~”
“W-wait!”
Rain ignored their pleas and took three steps, then suddenly looked back at the beautiful woman.
He saw the despair and complex emotions in her eyes, as well as the pain. The look caused Rain’s mind to suddenly tremble.
Sighing, he once again faced them: “Why can’t you just run away from here anyway. If it’s now, then escaping should be easy.”
The beautiful woman looked at him and then turned towards the dead bodies of her friends. “They died here so their save point would also be here. Once they revive again, they would still get killed by that damn monster! I can’t leave them here!”
“I see, so that how it is…”
Now that she mention, I haven’t seen any kind of monsters around here. Does it mean that this place was the Makopa tree’s territory? Well, if that is the case then I guess reviving here would be pretty bad as you would instantly get attacked by that monster…
“Hoho, interesting…”
Hm? Again?!
Rain instantly jumped away from his position and as expected, two thick roots came out from the ground. “Damn this monster!!”
After the roots, it was then followed by the thick vines but it was useless. As long as Rain could see the vines, he could certainly dodge it by hair’s breath.
Looking at Rain’s movements while watching him dodge the vines gracefully and even countered by slashing onto them, the two girls couldn’t help but get impressed.
However contrary to their expectations, Rain was already reaching his limits. He just can’t dodge forever!
He finally made a decision!
Fine! If you want war then I’ll give you war.

Witchbone: The Goblins Winter
Themes found in these stories include friendship, found family, defying negative expectations, trying to figure out how to be a force for good in your corner of the world, doing heroic things even if you don't look or feel like a hero, and that being different isn't necessarily fatal. Summary: A spell of arctic weather. A mysterious death. The reading of a will. Strange tracks in the snow. Eleven-year-old Danny Hallow accepts his life, such as it is. His father is dead, his mother left years ago. His three Keepers are the only people aware of Danny's erratic and not-very-impressive psychic abilities. He has no friends, he's been suspended from school, and he's responsible for the life of a small brown bat that's ended up in his care. When Danny's estranged Uncle Enoch dies under mysterious circumstances, he and his Keepers are called to the town of Eddystone, New Hampshire for the reading of the man's will. Traveling four hundred miles from his dreaded hometown to attend, Danny is happy to get away, possibly inherit something interesting- and maybe find out more about his family while he's there. Arriving at the crumbling family estate of Gnomewood Home, he finds it to be hauntingly familiar, a bit creepy, oddly comforting, and possibly alive. When his uncle's will reveals that he's inherited Gnomewood and everything in it, he's determined to stay and make a happier life for himself in Eddystone, somehow. But at Gnomewood, he finds more questions than answers to his family's secrets. Disturbing old memories come to him in dreams. His psychic abilities begin to grow stronger, and as a result he becomes aware that a horde of cryptic creatures are plaguing the town of Eddystone, seemingly drawn out by the spell of an unusually frigid February. Toothy little goblins that are sneaky, vicious, and hungry. Goblins that take a particular interest in Danny. Will the emergence of the alien, and potentially dangerous, power he's inherited from his peculiar family tree help Danny survive the goblin infested winter, inadvisable attempts to befriend a terrifying boy with silver eyes, and a new school? Only if he learns to control them before they put him and everyone around him in danger. Before they convince some people that he should never have been allowed to exist at all. Before he becomes just another twisted tale in his family's bizarre history, kept hidden for centuries within the ivy-covered walls of Gnomewood Home.
