《Philippine Lore》BK1; Chapter 10: [ Clash of the Titans ]

The sudden arrival of the Big Bad Wolf didn’t go unnoticed by the big spider. Because of this, Rain was really in quite a tight spot.
Rain looked back and forth between the two monsters, and let out a sigh. So this is what it means to be stuck between a rock and a hard place.
He offered a carefree thought, even in this situation.
“Good grief, this is the worst.”
At this moment, Rain let out an unexpected sigh as held his two hands towards the upcoming monsters.
“WAIT!” He cried out.
“I know you want to eat me but I only have one body. And so, who will be the one to eat me?”
Well, this seemed to be a really stupid action. But, as they say ‘Where there is a will, there is a way.’
More like, Rain bet a gamble. He gambled whether these monsters could understand him or not. Although it is still a foolish act but he had no choice.
Looking at the monsters, each of them exudes a strong presence. It means that these monsters were certainly stronger than him. And now there are two, his survival chance was less than zero.
And because he doesn’t have a chance of survival anyway, let’s just play a gamble … as dangerous as this. He planned to choose which was the lesser of the two evils in front of him and side with it.
“Who would get the Lion’s share?” Rain taunts the two monsters.
What Rain wanted to do was like what the donkey in the fable ‘The donkey and a foolish Wolf’ did.
Rain liked that story since he was a child. A donkey who managed to trick a starving foolish wolf and won. A very good story.
When faced with danger, one should try to remain calm and act wisely. Not letting the fear rushed into your head.
This was what Rain learned from that story. And now, he needed to use this in practice. Although it was still a foolish act in others point of view.
As expected, the wolf didn’t pause for a moment and slowly advances while letting a threatening growl towards Rain.
Baring its bloodied sharp fangs, he looked at Rain as if he was already a dead man walking.
However, contrary to the Big Bad Wolf, the big spider unexpectedly paused for a moment.
Seeing this, Rain’s eyes couldn’t help but lit up in joy. A chance!
“Mister Spider … ah no, Miss beautiful spider! Look at him; he wants to eat me alone!” Like a spoiled child, Rain immediately went to action. “What a selfish bastard!”
He ran towards the spider with open arms but at this moment seeing him move, the Big Bad Wolf finally acted. He jumped towards Rain and brandished its blade-like claws.
Ding!
[ You have been attacked! ]
[ Flame Grey Wolf ( Mutant ) Lv6 ]
Damn! As expected, this bastard is really strong! Why are the monsters inside this forest so strong?! Is this what bullying a noob means?
He managed to parry the claws with his dagger in a timely fashion. However, he was lacking in strength. And thus, he was sent flying towards a tree like a cannon ball.
“Screeee!!”
Seeing the Big Bad Wolf’s attack, the spider was angered. It then rushed towards the Big Bad Wolf and shot a thread like thing and binds the beast.
The Big Bad Wolf wasn’t a pushover either. It opened its jaws and launches a flamethrower, burning the thread binding its body. It then cast a hateful glare towards the spider.
How dare this bug interfere with his meal!?
The spider let out a threatening screech while crawling slowly towards the Big Bad Wolf. Its eyes saying ‘You’re a bully, I hate you!’
… And then the two entered a battle.
--- ---
Just as Rain anticipated, some monsters really do possess amazing intellect. This was what he bet for.
Rain realized this point after meeting that abominable little rabbit. Although the spider wasn’t as smart as that animal, however it was still intelligence enough compared to the Big Bad Wolf.
However, this was still a problem. More like nothing changes.
Rain was still a prey … no, I guess it did change something.
Rain wasn’t a mere prey anymore but a prize. A very special prize!
Seeing the raging battle in front of him, Rain slowly and quietly back a few steps and sat on the ground while leaning on a huge tree.
Rain didn’t think of escaping because he knows that he wouldn’t be able to. Besides, if he did and was noticed by these two monsters, he believes he was done for. Might as well, rest and regained his lost mana.
Just what else could be done so that he would survive? Rain couldn’t make anything out of it.
No matter if it’s the Big Bad Wolf or the Spider; he believed that these two monsters will be able to catch up with him no matter how fast he was. So it’s naturally futile to run at this moment, might as well watched the ‘Clash of the Titans’ for free. This wasn’t something that could be seen every day.
If someone was there and asked him why was he so calm even though he knows that he would not survive?
Rain would certainly answer without hesitation.
‘It’s not that I’m calm. It’s just that even if I get nervous, I can’t do anything. So I’m just doing what I can while eating popcorn.’
He wanted to enjoy the battle, unfortunately there’s no popcorn if there was; it would have been a good show.
The two monsters in front of him were both carnivorous beasts, and in this world, they were both life forms classified as [ Magic Beast ].
If a normal human were to run into them, then that person would definitely be forced to resign himself to death. Even the weakest of Magic Beasts were able to devour dozens of humans individually, much less the two monsters in front of him.
Meeting one of them was the same as meeting the death god on his current level. Now it’s both of them, what kind of luck was this?
The Big Bad Wolf, [ Flame Grey Wolf ( Mutant ) ] was a mutated version of the Flame Grey Wolf. Of course, because of this they were far stronger than the normal [ Flame Grey Wolf ].
According to what Rain knows, a mutated monster’s strength almost doubled that of a normal monster.
As an example, this [ Flame Grey Wolf ( Mutant ) ] was a Lv 6 monster, but it was a mutated monster and so its current power should be equal to that of a lv 10 – 11 [ Flame Grey Wolf ].
Freaking scary isn’t it?
This beast was most likely a BOSS monster.
In addition, this monster has a special organ within its body; it could give birth to high-heated flames. Yeah, like a natural born flamethrower. Its defining trait was its fire attack.
From said trait, its skin and innards developed fearsome resistance to heat, and it might even be able to swim leisurely even through a bubbling magma. Scary.
As a current Fire mage, this monster is Rain’s greatest arch nemesis. That’s why he wanted this beast to die and get killed by the huge spider. If not, he would surely and without a doubt … die.
And thus in this fight, Rain was betting all his money on the spider.
According to the appearance, the spider should be the [ Red Back Arachne ] an [ Arachne ] type monster.
Yes, it was the monster version of the Red Back spider, a very venomous spider which is allegedly the only poisonous or venomous spider in the Philippines.
In real life, this kind of spider was indigenous to Australia, it has now found its home in other countries like Japan and the Philippines.
This black spider has a bright red mark on its back with an hourglass coloring on its stomach. And for additional information, this spider was a very close relative of the black widow spider.
According to the information Rain had read, [ Red Back Arachne ] has a max body-span of 5 meters. As a spider, it could use the adhesive threads produced within its body to capture targets or could personally run after them itself. Its bite held a paralyzing poison, so after being caught once, be relieved you will be saying goodbye to your lonesome life~
--- ---
Suddenly, when Rain was closely observing the fight, he noticed something on the spider’s giant back. Although it certainly has a bright red mark but inside the bright red mark was a large cross-shaped mark.
[ Red Back Arachne ] doesn’t have such thing. Even in the images Rain saw while reading various information about the game, [ Red Back Arachne ] doesn’t have one.
So what’s happening here?
As Rain was quietly observing the monster’s characteristics and their battle, the two monsters fight had reached the climax.
To Rain’s displeasure, the Big Bad Wolf was the one holding the advantage.
It spewed fire after fire like a crazy arsonist. With its nimble body, the spider couldn’t keep a hold of his position clearly.
Worse is, the thread the spider let out was easily burned and it seems like the spider itself was afraid of fire as it couldn’t approach the Big Bad Wolf easily.
This is bad! Seeing this, Rain cursed the hundred gods he could think of.
Level wise, most likely the spider was higher level compared to the Big Bad Wolf. Even if it was certainly in disadvantage because of meeting its arch nemesis, which was fire, it was still holding itself quite well.
It was stubbornly spewing sturdy thread after another while brandishing its scythe-like feet.
“Screee!!”
“Groooaar!!”
The two monsters, each with frames surpassing two meters, glared at one another. They kicked the ground and
collided once again, entering a more heated battle…
Clash of the Titans!
It certainly was one. Even Rain that should have been filled with anxiety and fear was…
“That! That hit! Oh, so good! Go beautiful spider!!”
“Ah no, not there! Dodge, oh so close! Damn it, try it again!”
“Woah, a side slash! What a good hit!”
… Was feeling it for a different reason
"Oh my god, miss beautiful spider keep this up, that wolf has no chance of winning this, unless maybe a safe falls on your head!"
"Look at the redness around the wolf’s ribcage; it looks like he's been barbecued."
Rain for some reason forgot that he was still in a very dangerous situation as he commented as if he was a boxing commentator.
“Oh, that’s a nice hit! A perffeeeeect hitttttt!”
Feeling worried if the spider was hit.
Feeling happy when the spider got a hit.
Rain cheered like a girl watching her crush scored a three pointer.
Unexpectedly, the spider seemed to understand that Rain was cheering for it. It sometimes follows Rain’s advice and sometimes it would even wave its sharp foot towards him. In addition, the louder the cheer, the spider seemed to be even more enthusiastic to attack.
“Screee!!!”
However, contrary to the spider’s feelings, the Big Bad Wolf was certainly annoyed by Rain’s voice. It would shot numerous fireballs towards him just to shut him up.
“You damn beast! Where do you think you’re aiming at? You s*ck at aiming, damn it, I was nearly barbecued! Aim properly idiot!”
If the wolf can talk it would definitely cursed at Rain and say; ‘I’m aiming at you, you big idiot!’
Rain seemed to forget that he was also the Big Bad Wolf’s enemy and its real target.
“Awoooooo!!”
At this moment, the Big Bad Wolf couldn’t endure it anymore. Rain’s annoying voice and the spider’s stubborn attack, it howled angrily at the sky and flames appeared from the ground.
“Screee!!!”

2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
