《Chronicler’s Tale》Chapter 27

New World Day 10
Normally when I woke up from the more and more common bouts of unconsciousness, it was because my body was hungry, thirsty, or I needed to use the restroom. Every once in awhile it was because of noise from outside. This time though it was the exact opposite. It was quiet. Not a bird chirping, a goblin screeching, or a coyote howling. Just silence. At first I feared that I had somehow screwed up my hearing along with my vision, but when I slapped my thigh with my hand a loud smack reverberated through the room. Nothing wrong with my ears though I probably had a bruise for my regen skill to fix after my eyes. That thought distracted me from the eerie silence pervading the area. How were my eyes now? I hadn’t tried to open them for at least a day’s time if not longer. Fear wracked my body as I psyched myself up to open my eyes. On one hand, I wanted to know if my sight had a chance of being restored, but on the other hand, I was terrified of finding out that I was well and truly blind. If I really was blind then what would I do? There was no way that I could survive the New World without my eyesight. Death or worse was the unstoppable outcome of bearing such a crippling injury. If that was the case then might it not be better to just …. SLAP!
NO! I was not going to go down that road. Never down that road. Even if I was blind that didn’t mean it was the end of the road. Magic and more existed in this universe now. I just needed to find a way to make up for the loss of my physical sight with something else. Spiritual sight? The Mind’s Eye? Mana Vision? Three possible paths popped into my head right away. See? What was there to be so down about. If I was consigned to darkness then I would just break the darkness. Besides, it’s not like it was confirmed that I was blind now. I felt much better now after working through those feelings. So much better that my ache from the slap faded away as if it never existed. I took a deep breath and cracked open my eyes.
Shadows filled my vision, but tears fell from my eyes like they were waterfalls. I saw shapes in the shadows. I wasn’t blind! My vision was still a mess and blurrier than it should be even accounting for the tears, but I saw the light, kind of. My body cracked and creaked as I stretched myself out. I made a point of being careful when I stretched my left arm. I moved it up and down and side to side. Then I started whirling it in a circle. I was cautious at first, but I quickly picked up steam. Before I knew it, I was going all out. Hahahhahahahahahhahahaha! Uncontrollable laughter leaked out from me, and a joy spread through my body setting it alight with happiness. I had been in a bad spot there for awhile. Between the python and my own recklessness, I nearly died a dozen times and very nearly succeeded in crippling myself. Now though, now I felt like an eagle flying through the sky without a care in the world. No, not an eagle. That’s not enough to describe the unbridled joy I felt in this moment. Like a dragon soaring through the sky. The unchallenged lord of the azure sky. That was what I felt like.

Minutes ticked by as I stood there in front of the love seat basking in the joy of the moment. It was a moment that I would remember forever. One that would sustain me in the abyss of the night when all the demons of my mind crawled out of the depths. But such moments were fleeting, and there were pressing concerns. The only noise this entire time was the two slaps. The thick wooden doors insulated the bedroom, but not to this degree. Something was up, and I needed to find out what was going on. I turned on the second still charged lantern to light up the bedroom before I went to the garage to check out what was going on. In the unnatural silence of the day, the creak of the door opening was like a bomb going off in the garage. My steps faltered as I worried over whether whatever was out there had heard me, but now wasn’t the time for cowardice. Besides, I couldn’t help but be curious about what was dangerous enough to intimidate the entire world into silence. Heh, maybe it was a real dragon.
Blurs of light shot through the garage door windows and bounced off the massive pool of dried blood and the shiny red ATVs to give the garage an ominous red tint. One that even my messed up eyes saw. I crept forward and snuck past the Ranger and ATVs. I stayed along the wall, ducked down, and snuck below the center garage door window. I poked my head up just enough to get a good look outside. Huh, the gray and white gravel of the driveway and the trunks, branches, and leaves of the trees all seemed to be dyed a deep crimson. I ducked back down and with exquisite care rubbed my eyes to see if blood had contaminated my vision. No, no blood in my eyes. The red color staining the garage wasn’t from the pools of blood or the ATVs. It was pouring in from the outside. I popped back up to take another look and through the haze of my broken vision I saw red tide broken only by some large clumps littering the forest floor. Some clumps were a pale green like the color itself had caught a cold or the flu. At first I thought they resembled giant clumps of moss, but as I stared at them, I felt they looked more and more familiar. Was that fur? Clumps of green fur scattered across the forest floor. Ah! There poking out from behind a clump of fur was a skeleton. The skeleton looked as if it had been bleached by the sun for weeks if not months. It was hard to see exactly what creature the skeleton belonged to with my damaged eyes. I thought it was a goblin skeleton judging by the size. Was I seeing the remains of the fight from that night?

After examining the driveway and forest again, I started to pick out additional details that I missed at first glance. Other clumps littered the ground. These clumps were smaller and brown, but there were a respectable amount of gray clumps as well. I continued to stare out the window and began to see more skeletons all over the ground. There were chipmunk, squirrel, and robin skeletons dotting the crimson landscape. What the hell was going on out there? Even with my blurry vision I could tell that it was like a scene from hell out there. It's no wonder that it was so quiet. Everything in the area was dead! The pressing question was what killed them and why? If it was strong enough to slaughter everything around I wouldn’t think that it would want to mess around with creatures as small as chipmunks and squirrels.
Nothing had been spared its wrath. Nothing. What kind of creature would do that, and why was everything red? Was it all blood, was it some trick of the sun, or was there some other explanation? As I stared out the window, I noticed that my vision was getting blurrier by the moment. It took a moment before my mind kicked into gear and I saw that my breath had begun to steam up the window bit by bit. I needed to change windows to continue my investigation, but when I took a step towards the window to my left, my shin brushed against the handle used to raise the garage door. The impact caused the door to rumble and shake for the slightest of moments, but that was all it took. I froze in fear as I hoped that the small movement and noise didn’t alert whatever monster lurked outside. My fears proved all too real. The crimson that dominated the new landscape outside rose up into the air and came crashing towards the garage door like a tidal wave of blood. Whatever that red crap was it was alive and it was coming for me!

Sengoku Demon Chronicles
Sengoku-era Japan was already batshit crazy. Now it’s got demons. ~~~ Japan 1541-2. Miho, a young village guy [with a female name], is on the trail of his mysterious lost love when he unwittingly saves the life of Akira, a cynical ashigaru [low-level samurai]. By doing so, he incurs the wrath of a box demon who is way too petty to just let it go. After that, it’s mostly downhill. ~~~ Includes: purple mist demons, portals, Yuki Onna, other demons, warlords, ashigaru, a try-hard mage, an eight-tailed fox and an endless litany of pathological liars. Historically, it’s about as accurate as most Hollywood productions. Hopefully, a little better. ~~~ Note: due to having fewer followers than a no-touch, no-look sex cult, I'm taking a break from this for August/September. Will be back in October to finish off Volume 1 and start off Volume 2.
