《The Software Detective》1.29 That Smile

I finished setting up all the cameras outside the home and throughout the hallways. Now I sat her in the security room testing all the software. Only the two screens in front of me were lit, out of the wall of screens that were mounted against the wall.

The only person I’ve been in contact with all day is Bennett. He gave me a new map and calls me now and then if I need anything. But I haven’t heard from him since he called me for lunch. Which is reasonable he must be pretty busy with Ania’s sudden passing.

Why was she smiling?

I looked through the lines of code written for the motion sensors nothing appeared to out of place or written poorly. It’s time to test if the system actually works. I typed in the console to compile and run the program.

The other monitors that hang from the wall to the ceiling came to life. Besides the screens in front of me, the other screens displayed a different part of the house. Great, the video works properly and let’s see if the motion sensor works.

Typing a few instructions in the console, the screens switched to all the outside cameras. That moved with a squirrel that was running in grass and followed it up a tree. Then when the motion stopped, the camera readjusted itself and went back to its normal position.

The next camera captured the motion in the bar. Zofia was sitting at the bar with a bottle of jack just swirling the cup as she sat there alone. It must be really hard for her. I mean she was the first to find her sister so she must take it harder than most.

The next camera I looked at was Rue, walking into the car garage with a bottle of anti-freeze. She walked over to the recycling can and put the empty containers next to it. For a moment, she stood there. Rue ran her hands through her hair. Then walked out the room. We all grieve normally so I guess this is how she grieves.

Why was she smiling?

Sitting back in my chair I put my hands on my head and stared at the ceiling. Ania seemed mostly fine. I know her father said that she was hyperventilating. But besides her having all the other symptoms of her being drunk, well except because she was drooling all over the place and having some nausea. Although I found it strange that Rue was using two different ice budgets when making drinks.

I couldn’t help myself, but I couldn’t shake this feeling I had. The feeling that there was potentially foul play involved. Because I could not understand Why she was smiling.

Maybe I am just being paranoid. I mean that’s her older sister for crying out loud.

To clear Rue from suspicion, I looked at the old camera footage. August said that the outside cameras were already operational and had been recording for the last week. There must be evidence that can free her from all suspicion and Ania’s death can truly be just from natural causes.

I spent hours reviewing the footage. Everything seemed to be normal. Just some cars coming and leaving a squirrel running and grabbing nuts every so often. But then I got to the camera that was trained on the window of the bar. I couldn’t quite make out what was happening in the room. So, I zoomed in. now it was clear. Unfortunately, I know how she did it, but I still can’t figure out why she did it.

One of the motion cameras picked up the flashing lights of cop cars, driving through the main driveway of the castle.

The next moment my phone buzzed; it was Bennett. “Tom, the police and a detective have arrived. Please come to the lobby and so they can take your statement. Since you probably didn’t intend to be interrogated by the police, you will receive another $20,000 for the inconvenience.”
