Part 4: I Hope You Enjoy Your Stay
How long has it been since I left my sweet beloved Cinnamon bun on my condo’s floor? Taking my eyes off the rode I looked at the date on my phone, 2 March 2020. It’s been a full year since I saw the murder and was chased by the mafia. Luckily, I work remote so when I bought a new laptop, I could work anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection. But I miss sleeping in my bed, or going to the deli down the street, but most importantly, I want the chance to eat that heavenly cinnamon bun again.
A phone call come in from the dashboard. It was Syd. “Hey Tom! It’s been an entire year since you left on your special work assignment. When are you coming back?” she shouted into the phone.

A phone call come in from the dashboard. It was Syd. “Hey Tom! It’s been a whole year since you left on your special work assignment. When are you coming back?” she shouted into the phone.
“Uh, not sure when I’ll be back. We’re not even close to being done with the project.” I said. I looked at the navigation system in the car. 10 more miles left until I get to my exit.
“Come on, Tom, can you at least tell me what the mission is about? I promise I won’t tell anyone.”

“Syd, I told you before I can’t do that terrorist spies might listen to our conversations.”
“Fine, but when this mission is over, you have to tell me everything, okay?” I said, moving to the middle lane of the three-lane highway.
“Of course, it’s not like they wire tapped my condo.” I said. Not wanting to slip up and tell her the truth, I thought of things to change the subject. “What’s Rob up to now in days I haven’t heard from him lately?”
“He’s been really busy at work at an energy research laboratory. They brought him on as one of their chemical engineers, and now he spends all his time doing boring things like trying to find an alternative fuel source to replace electric with a fuel source you’ll only have to replace once a year.”
“That doesn’t sound boring at all” I laughed, “If were being far, you have the coolest job out of all of use.” I said, moving to the exit on the far right and taking the first exit. Rain tapped on the window. I turned on my wipers to clear them, allowing me to see the window.
“Uh, what are you talking about? I thought I would work at a renowned hospital as one of their lead neuroscientists, but no, I’m working for some game company developing a neuro-link so their stupid game Nightmare Chasers can be the first virtual reality game.”
“If you hate it, why did you take the job?”
“The recruiter showed me the contract of how much my salary and sign-on bonus would be, then I looked at how much I owed in student loans. Let’s just say he made a very compelling argument. But once those loans are paid off, I want to be on the front lines saving live one neuron at a time.”

“Well Syd, if there is one thing I’ve learned to be away from home, it’s that life is more like the tortoise and the hair. Slow and steady wins the race.” I pulled into the parking lot of the hotel of where I was staying for the night.
“I know. The quicker things come, the quicker they fade. But that will not stop a girl from trying to get what she wants ASAP.”
“Of course, alright Syd, I have to get going to talk to you later.” I said, hanging up the phone and getting out of the car.

He slowly backs up until his back is against the wall like my own, "You're..my neighbor?" He points to my door and I nod my head quickly. He hums softly, "You been here a while?" He teased, making a giggle slip past my lips. I look away to the floor again, "I-I like big shirts... a lot." I mumble softly and he nods his head, "Hol' up." He puts his box down before walking over to one of the grey bins. I nosily watch as he pulls out a big grey sweatshirt, "Here." He holds it out for me to take and I stare at him with wide eyes, "F-For me?" I hesitantly grab the soft fabric as he chuckles, "Nah for ya mom." I puff my cheeks a little and give him a small glare, "Hush." He leans back against the wall and shakes his head, "It's cold out. You should put it on." ____________________________She was a shy girl from the city with no spine and a list of problems so long that it could touch the floor and roll off her shoes.
