《Fighting Back The Tide》Chapter Eighteen

"Change of plans, instead of heading out we will form a defensive barricade here. We don't know what is coming so work together in groups of four to five and watch each others backs. We will fight by rotating every five minutes if possible to keep us fresh. Nr Hazel will take thirty people to guard the other entrance in case of being flanked and report any suspicions movements so that we may counter it."
"I don't want to fight so don't make me."
"Same here I'm not a fighter you guys have weapons you protect us."
"Worthless trash the lot of you. Why should we protect those who contribute nothing. We go out and savage and hunt while you do nothing. If you contribute nothing to group survival then we have no use for you. Dead weight needs to be cut off." I roared back. Seriously they expect me to do everything for them and for them to do nothing in return?
"The strong protect the weak and those with weapons protect those without. Basic human decency."
"Trash what are you talking about? In human history the strong dominate the weak and they are either made subservient or eradicated. If you don't pick up weapons to fight then the only thing you will be good for is monster food. Now got off your collective arses and start pulling your weight."
Some moved others did not and just remained cowering and crying. I saw people with chairs as improvised shields and various blunt objects to be swung as clubs. I couldn't use my magic here incase I set things alit of caused friendly fire so my only option was to use my sword. In the tightly packed area my movements would be hampered greatly but it will also serve to bottleneck the monsters so it was a trade off.
Over the sound of rushing feet we heard guttural voices that seemed to be talking and hollering. When the first monster came into view we found that they were wolves mounted by goblins. This was going to be tough.
Normally I would have people shoot them from range and make a killing zone of some kind and get close range troops to finish off the ones that survived but we had no ranged weaponry. This limited our options to engage them in close range and hope that our numbers and bottleneck will make up for it.

At first the monsters tried to charge in and jump over our makeshift barricade of tables and chairs and some of the wolves actually managed to get inside some tripped on the barricade and were swiftly finished off but it messed up the barricade weakening it.. Those that got in wreaked havoc upon the defending and cowering students and teachers alike. Death comes for all of us whether we are ready for it or not only thing we can do is choose how we meet it. I would rather die on my feet fighting then cowering like a worm.
People say heroes are born not made and that proven true when some of those with weapons froze or ran away and did not help injured comrades. Giving a man a weapons doesn't make him a fighter.
People were torn apart by the wolves that managed to get in and slashed my the goblins that rode them. Whilst dealing with them goblins came hurling through the air like acrobats and started carving through the nearest people as they were caught off guard. Some people including me and the girls tried to hold back the tide even as the got behind us as we let the others supporting us deal with them and eventually the doorway started to choke up with the bodies making it hard for anything to get passed.
As I was at the front and at the very edge of the doorway with mountains of corpses making seeing out the doorway impossible I had the girls shield me from view and get the others nearby to assist those behind us in clearing the enemy that got through. While nobody was looking put my hand between the mountains of bodies so it reached the other side and I unleased one of the new spells I gained. I called it Chain Lightning and it hit my enemies and jumped from one to the next. currently I could only hit five enemies at a time with this but I felt it could have tremendous potential and hit dozens of enemies in the future as I improved. I cast that as quick as I could again and again and soon there were lots of shrieks and snarling coming along with the sounds of bodies hitting the floor. Shortly after we heard a voice even louder then the others bellow out and the attackers retreated.

After the fighting ceased I had Virginnia heal with the wounded as with her first aid and looks it would help comfort people and level her skill up. Yuki supervised the removal and separation of human bodies to another room and I had Fran and Annabeth loot the remains of the monsters.
A lot of the students upgraded from improvised objects to the swords the goblins carried but I didn't bother as the ones I had were better. I had the wolves separated so that we could skin them all for their pelts and possibly meat later and the goblins were put into another room to be dealt with later.
I needed to heal the students that were seriously injured to reduce the numbers unable to fight and I could do that by using my healing magic but I didn't really want to expose it yet... I suppose I could make a crappy item up and say it has limited charges and who would know any better? Yeah lets do that I thought but although I could heal physical injuries I couldn't do anything for their state of mind.
"Mrs Price please bring me the most seriously injured students immediately as I have a magic item that can heal people but only has a very limited about of charges It can't be wasted on mere scratches so for anything less then broken wounds or lost limbs see Virginnia and those with her for that."
Well it wasn't strictly speaking a lie as the number of charges equalled the amount of mana I had so from my point of view it was simply bending the truth a little. Saying all that I immediate dove straight into work. After a while of healing the students and no more arriving to be healed I wearily got up and had a drink then headed back to the cafeteria.
"So what is the final count?" I asked the teacher in charge of the butchers bill.
There were only a few hundred students to start with in the cafeteria so they were serious loses. Well any losses were serious when the monsters continually spawned while our numbers dwindled.
"We lost sixty seven students and that would have been a lot worse if you hadn't healed the wounded ones you did as I thought they were beyond saving." Mrs Price responded gloomily. "On the bright side there are over a hundred of the wolves and goblins slain so we killed more then we lost if that even means anything. I can't estimate the damage to morale though after this. Does your healing item have any charges left?"
I hesitated here before replying that it had a few charges left though only a handful or so. This gave me the leeway to heal in the future if necessary. I had gone up a few levels now as well so it that was only of the few good outcomes.

Author Note:Sorry about the crap battle scene as I wanted to do a scene where they were cornered and no real weapons to speak of and have this influence others to grow stronger. In later battles there will be more variety of weapons and tactics plus the MC will not be hiding his magic and he will not be the only one with magic either. It is supposed to be a crap battle as they aren't really skilled enough for anything more then a hack and slash. I will put up his status as soon as I work out how to do the spoiler bits properly.

For to stop is to die, and to die means he failed, failed himself and all those who still desperately need him.***The Author's Note:This is another in the Core series, the first one being The Wardens of Destiny while there is also a side story The Memoires of Eisen that's exclusive on Patreon for those who would like to support me.The Recordings of Raan occurs after the events in The Wardens of Destiny, and it's a separate thread from the main story. Among other things, I separated it into a new book as it has elements of progressive LitRPG and a fantasy-world setting.Since I'll keep on writing The Wardens of Destiny, this will be one of my side-projects. Eventually in the future, I plan to integrate some of the protagonists in this story with the main storyline.
