《Fighting Back The Tide》Chapter Five
Advertisement
Author Note: Not sure about this chapter as I suck at dialogue. Sorry it is so small but bit busy this evening so back tomorrow with more. As usual comment if you have any ideas to improve the chapter or and grammar mistakes. Also anybody know how to get rid of the [tds[tds from the stats chart as it doesn't show up when I look at it?
Right it is time to pick my feat and distribute my stats out. From the looks of it I can't manually add anything to either luck or leadership so they must be built up by using items and things like achievements. I want to build up a little all round and looks like I get five stat points per level up and maybe one feat every ten levels. I have sixty mana from twelve intelligence so it works out as five mana for every point so lets put twenty eight points into that to raise it to forty. I gain ten points for every point in vitality by the looks of it so add ten into that to raise it to twenty two. Add four in strength and eight into agility. I wish it came with a manual but I guess agility is for moving speed and reflexes to dodge so this is pretty damn vital.
As for my feat I will pick Silent Casting which gives me the ability to use my mind to utilize magic and no need to speak any chants or words which both saves time and is better is I want to be silent or communicate in battle.

Now with this being an apocalypse I will need to gather some supplies to survive. Lets see I will need to raid the infirmary for medical supplies, get some food and find a secure place to make camp. Just because no more monsters can spawn here doesn't mean it is in anyway secure and being the kind of place it is and with all the bodies, blood and gore it is not exactly the most hygienic of places. Also a place I should visit would be the textiles department as they have wood and metal working there and the home economics rooms all in that block. There is only one snag to my brilliant plan and that is that all the afore mentioned place are on the other side of the academy grounds with thousands of students and possibly vast hordes of monsters in-between neatly separating us.
On this site of the academy I have the dojo, gymnasium, all the physical education equipment, science labs and the dorms. Only time I stepped in the dojo I recall the teacher was an old school hardline Japanese and had an authentic katana. If it is still stored there...
I hoisted a dead Kobold on my shoulder and made my way to my classroom to let them know what sort of danger we were in with the body as my proof. Is isn't altruism but there are more people there that I can use as shields for my survival. I will not throw them to the wolves or needlessly sacrifice them but safety in numbers and all that.
As I threw open the door to the classroom the teacher was less then amused at my exuberant entrance. "Robert what kind of entrance was that?" "How long does it take you to go to the toilet as you have been well over ten minutes?"

"Do you have a medical condition that I am unaware of or do you just feel like screwing around?" "Also what the heck is that on your shoulders and any time you feel like answering any of those questions now would be a good time." I blinked as the machine gun fire questions as realise that she was plenty ticked off as I don't think I have seen her like this before. Well her anger is the least of my concerns at this point in time and I decided to be blunt and get my point across.
"Firstly I would answer any of your questions if you either paused for a breath and let me speak or if they had any importance whatsoever." "Secondly why have you guys not moved out anywhere or armed yourselves as I am sure you all heard that announcement?" "Thirdly last but not least this is a critter called a Kobold and it is proof that everything that announcement said is true or at least the world merging and turning into a game is true."
"Do you mean to tell me that the apocalypse is upon us and we are all going to die?" "What complete and utter nonsense." "Robert why are you stealing props from the drama department to play jokes on us."
"No not all of us will die only the unlucky and those unable to adapt to the coming changes and if you get off your high horse and examine the body you will see it is real."" You might have noticed that I am covered with blood, the same blood that is leaking from this here corpse and the swords that I have which I assure you are real."
This classroom starts buzzing with chatter immediately and suddenly the sounds of screams can be heard from down the hall.
"Help me, help me!"
"Ah MONSTERS"
"Please don't eat me!"
"Run for your lives"
"Shit I need a new pair of pants"
The academy public address system rang out suddenly to reinforce my words and the frantic screams.
"The academy is under attack from unknown creatures so all students follow your teachers into the cafeteria as it is the largest place in the school and can be defended easily." "It also has lots of food so we can stand a siege for a while so all we need to do it hole up and wait for the police or army to deal with the problem." "Remember not to panic and proceed in neat orderly file behind your teacher." "Class representatives and members of the student council are to assist."

Flame Beneath The Snowfall
Alto is a world governed by Tones. Magic, as one might call it. Manifested through deep mental and physical conditioning, one can control the Tones in a way that is unique to them. The power to store items in gems, transfer life, affect a person's mind, and even the more primal abilities such as control of the elements. Those who have these supernatural abilities are called 'Vassals.' People that fully manifest their abilities are not as common as one might think, and not all Vassals acquire their ability through practice, given if conditions are met. In fact, those who had received much trauma manifest the Tones more frequently, albeit spontaneously. However, the rare kind of Vassals are those who manifest it from childhood. A gift, but not without its repercussions. Alto is stuck in a transitional era, where the line between modern and dated technology is blurred. One can travel to a city that has a tall skyline, bustling with people in sophisticated clothing, or a mere town governed by a lord, all the while riding on a powered vehicle. Cultures vary: Some turn to the more dated practices such as castes, others are more inclined to set equal footing on their people, led by nobility. Some are dedicated to become scholars, studying Alto's Tones, while others set foot on hunts, protecting lone towns from the creatures of some of the still-untamed lands. And the Vassals? Those willing are took under The Organization, an elusive group, its presence said to permeate all throughout Alto, taking care of Rogue Vassals that abuse their abilities and other businesses related to their side. But what is this story all about, you may ask? Well, set your sights on the upper portions of this huge landmass that is Alto. Yes, the 'whole' world is called Alto, but that is because the majority of the known people live on this large continent. Relieve yourself of the worrying tensions everywhere, and see the white snow. Trace the piercing mountaintops and focus your eyes between the valley. A town sits there. Mido. After realizing that the memories only left in his mind was the night of his town's imminent destruction in flames, a boy finds himself grasping for every fiber of his life as he lays down flat on the ground. Beneath him was soot mixed with the white snow. Fortunately, a group of investigators, who were supposed to answer their call for help, saved him from his sorry state. With a newfound second wind, but hampered by his loss of memory, he must solve his own case: Who had the audacity to set Mido, his town, aflame? Flame Beneath the Snowfall focuses on action, with a sense of adventure, but mostly the discovery of an outside world, and the protagonist's exposure to it. Add in a whisk of soft magical elements, and you get a story that I hope will be interesting to the readers. That is not to say that my work is without the sense of unnerving atmosphere, however. As a forewarning, there are elements of gore, horror, minor elements of mental trauma, etc. so it is not for all audiences. *The book is already completed. Although I have plans to continue the story (it would have to involve much larger scope in terms of world-building), I have yet to decide when to start the next entry.

And how he is destined to rise again.---------------------------------------Before you think wrong of my choice of race for the mc, I want to inform you that although he starts as a Goblin, he will be nothing like Rou from Re:Monster (which is one of the main inspirations for this).---------------------------------------This is my first fiction, so I would love some feedback or your opinions in general. English isn't my main language either, so if you see any mistakes regarding grammar or anything else, please inform me. I don't plan on ending this fiction anytime soon, but due to school and work I may not have time to write chapters on a frequent base. Btw later on there may be Romance included, so I will put these into the categories, but don't expect anything sexual to happen in the first few chapters.
