I manage to finish up Haibara side story and guess what! It is 3 chapter long, thus I decided to split it up on 3 parts.

Chapter 18.5 – Haibara side story Part 1

Haibara pov – When they are on their way to the Capital of Hiiro

My name is Haibara, I am supposedly under orders from my lord Marimoto from the Hana clan, to protect his daughter from danger though looking at the current condition I am currently just a guide for Ryo and this muscle-head.

Previously, I am a commoner living in Greeto village. Life was normal, helping my mom to do chores such as washing clothes, catch fish using nets near the lake and even sometimes help out with my dad’s work. My dad is one of the farmers in the village, he was very kind and even taught me a lot of stuffs. I was satisfied and even dream about marrying one of the man in the village in the near future except god had another path for me. On the night of my birthday, I heard a carriage stop in front of my house. After my dad glance out from the window, he open the door. He called me to follow him, at that moment my mom started crying.

I was confused, everything was happening too fast, I tried to go back to my mom to ask what was happening but my dad forcefully pull me out from the house. It was the first time I saw that kind of emotions from dad, he had a mix of anger and sadness. He stop pulling me when he reached in front of the carriage. Looking up, I saw a fat man licking his lips while looking down on me.

It was terrifying, my legs started to shake, the feeling I got from this man, it’s as if it is a monster disguise under a human skin. The man suddenly put his right hand in front of me, it seems that he wants me to follow him but who would, I don’t even want to go near him but at that moment I felt a push from my back, turning my head around to see my dad having an indifferent look on his face.

‘Why dad why!’ tears started pouring out as I tried to beg my dad to differ but it was no use. He even turn around and walked back to my house. I wanted to scream and run away but looking back at how my mom was crying, everything come into place, I was sold by my own parents and while I was crying the fat man dragged me inside the carriage. There were a few children in the same carriage as me, they all have a helplessness look on them as if they had given up on life. There were also a few men dress like a mercenary looking at me at me as if I’m a meat on a platter. Before the carriage got out from the village, I saw an 8 year old girl on her courtyard, she was training and were swinging her sword. It was Reena, it’s that girl that always had an opportunity to go to another village as her father is a friend of one of the nobles in Kitaro village.

‘I don’t understand that girl, why does she want to even get out from this peaceful village to serve under some noble, is she satisfied on being looked down that much? I hate her! Why does she have everything but still doesn’t want to continue living here while I, who wanted to live here is being sold by my own parents that I trusted. I hope she and her family suffers‘

That night in the carriage, I cried till I fall asleep. It was only a few hours before I was force to awake when I heard the sound of people screaming outside the big carriage. When I was fully awake, I realizes that all of the mercenary supposedly inside the carriage was absent. ‘My chance to escape’ I thought, but where would I go? My parents had betrayed me thus I got no other place to go to. ‘No!’ I can’t give up like this, I don’t want to be looked down. Turning my head towards other children that was in the same carriage as me, I called them out to escape together with me, unexpectedly all of them just give one look at me and back on staring at the floor. ‘What’s wrong with them….Oh...... They are probably just like me, thinking that they had nowhere to go even after they escape.’ The fight outside had some rejoice as some men were already starting to celebrate. ‘No time to make them follow me, they will just drag me down…..eh…. am I this cruel… What’s happening to me, why am I thinking this way… No…No.. Stop wasting time!’

Slowly dropping out from the carriage, without the mercenary noticing I run for my life.

“Oi that girl is running away! Shit!!” (Mercenary guy)

“The carriage is more important than that girl! Don’t let these monster ever have the chance to attack it.” (Fatman)

Hearing the words from the fatman, I was relieved. I ran for about fifteen minutes before I stop to take a rest, sat down while leaning on one of the tree as I breathe heavily. It was the first time I ran that far in my life, I was also too tired to even move. My heart were beating too fast, I was still scared of being chase even after hearing those sentence from the fatman. For a few minutes I waited for any footsteps near me, but after knowing that nobody is coming back for me. I was relieved, too relieved in fact that I fall back to sleep.

“Grrrrr……” (???)

The angry sound that woke me up…

Rubbing my eyes while I try to push myself up to lean back on the tree.

I saw three wolves a few distance away from me, the biggest wolf were probably the parent. I question myself why didn’t they just kill me off while I was asleep, looking at two small wolf. I finally realize, the parent wolf were trying to teach its cub to kill a living being but these cub were either too conscious or nervous that they kept growling till it made me awake. ‘Chance! God is this the chance that you have given me?’ Without hesitation, I quickly bring myself up, turning around and ran for my life. The sound of growling were getting louder, probably the parent decided to take over and kill me as I scream for help while running.

‘Stupid of me, stepping on a small little pebble. I sprained my ankle and immediately fall down. Turning my head around the big wolf were starting to slow down after seeing me stop running, its cub finally manage to catch up. This time though they didn’t take their time, both of them continues to dash towards me.’

‘Oh god no…. Is this the end of me?’

I shut my eyes tightly trying to escape from reality, but the attack didn’t came even after awaiting for a few seconds. I slowly open my eyes to see a man in front of me, holding a bloodied one handed sword on his right hand. Glancing down, I saw the two cub, dead. Both of them were beheaded, within moments the man had already killed these two cubs and probably the parent too seeing that its parent were already bleeding on its stomach.

Tears started pouring unconsciously after I felt saved from danger, glancing at the person that save me hoping for a friendly one. Ever since I got betrayed by my own parents or even if they didn’t I promise myself to not ever trust anyone that I just met.

I tried to stand up but the pain from the sprain kept me down “Urgh…”. The person turn to me after hearing my voice.

“Are you alright?” (???)

“…” (Haibara) I look at him, preparing to scream if he is a bad person even though it’s probably no use as there won’t be any random passer-by that would help me out.

“What’s wrong?” (???)

‘He seems genuinely worried about me…’ (Haibara)

“Father!” (???)

“Nanami! What are you doing here!? I told you to stay in the carriage didn’t I?” (???)

“B-But you told me you be back within 5 minutes!” (Nanami)

‘It’s that noble girl that always come by to our village to play with Reena…That’s her father then… Marimoto-san…’ (Haibara)

“Can’t you trust your own father Nanami?” (Marimoto)

“Hmph! Arhh you’re bleeding! Father! Don’t die!!” (Nanami)

“Hahaha… Aww worry about your father now is it!? Don’t worry Nanami, I’m fine this is just a scratch” (Marimoto)

“Really?” (Nanami)

“Yes daughter” (Marimoto)

“O-Okay…. Eh? Who’s that father?” (Nanami)

“Ah! I forgot about her!! She is the girl that I just saved” (Marimoto)

“Are you okay? Here come take my hand” (Nanami)

Nanami approached Haibara without showing a disgusted looked, she even smile while waiting for Haibara to take her hand. Haibara unconsciously grab her hand, the very first noble that had this genuine smile. All this while Haibara had always been given a disgusting look by the nobles or even some wealthy merchant that pass by the village. Haibara was in a daze seeing the beautiful smile, it’s as if all of her worries has been washed away.

“My name is Marimoto Nanami from the Hana Clan, nice to meet you” (Nanami)

“Eh? ……..” (Haibara) She finally just woke up from her daze thus didn’t get to hear what Nanami was saying.

“Your name, what’s your name?” (Nanami)

“H-Hai…….Haibara” (Haibara)

“May I ask what happen to you?” (Marimoto)

“S-Sold …….No..Uh got lost” (Haibara) ‘Why are you telling them the truth Haibara’

As if Marimoto had known about it all along, he smile and pat Haibara head while saying. “Come on let’s get you somewhere safe”. Nanami were also nodding her head while showing a wide smile. Without her knowing, Haibara got dragged by these noble pace, board the carriage and had a short conversation of where they were going, before she realize, she had reached Kitaro village. As it was the first time being in a different village, Haibara was speechless. Everything looks different, there were so many people in this village, there are even guards patrolling around. They even had to queue to get inside which was the most surprising. Not before long, they reached the house of Marimoto. It is a humongous house, Nanami blurted out saying that it’s her mansion, so this is a mansion. A gate that is 10 meter tall, fence that is made up of stones there’s even a lot of guards that wore a totally different clothing.

“That is father knights, they are father personal army” (Nanami)

“Eh… Knights?” (Haibara) ‘So these are the ones that Reena wanted to become…’ My hand suddenly got pulled by Nanami.

“Come on, before we tour around my house, let’s get you a new clothes.” (Nanami)

“Okay…” (Haibara)

After bathing in a gigantic man-made lake, Nanami guide me along while showing off her house. It’s too big, after knowing from Nanami saying that I will be living here from now on made me scared that I will get lost in this maze. She showed me so many things that I never seen before, there was even a place called the library where they kept all of the books, Nanami told me that Reena love this place a lot as there are a lot of books that give her motivation to achieve her goal. Nanami pass me one of the book title ‘Princess Knight’, it’s literally about a princess that escape from her household as she didn’t want to become a sacrifice to her family by being forced to marry someone she doesn’t love, thus she began her journey out to another kingdom, knowing that she won’t survive as a woman she cross-dress and by her luck she manage to get recruited by the army of the kingdom.

Long story short, she become the princess knight, there were some part where I don’t understand, when Nanami said that the princess started to have feelings with her knight, but isn’t that knight a women? How could she not realize it even when you are living together in the same house? I stop Nanami before she continues the story because it was starting to creep me out, Nanami was a bit disappointed knowing that I don’t really like the story. It seems Reena love the story so much that she wanted to become a knight.

I didn’t know that Reena loves women, I was lucky to be able to get out from the village. No wait, Reena wanted to become a knight of course she be coming here.

‘So this is why Reena wanted to become a knight’

Looking at the sky ‘God please don’t ever let Reena be able to achieve her goals, I don’t even want to see two girls kissing each other.’ It struck me, why I was creep out when I heard a woman love another woman, to this day I still doesn’t know why I got creep out.

The next day I was awaken by Nanami, she was practising her sword fighting. I was wondering why she tries so hard, don’t tell me she is also trying become that person in the story? One of the day I got so curious and ask her why she wanted to practise sword fighting, her answer was unexpected.

“It’s always been my dream to journey out and experience everything in this world.” (Nanami)
