Short summary of the last chapter:

The demon’s army made it to River’s Cross at the same time that Voice made it to the mountain. The demon spent several days watching the city, to find out how to best get the info he needed. Voice adopted a kid named Lily. She plans to try to kill him at some point. He trained her to be able to kill wolves without crying so much.

The demon sent the man that failed away. He gave the man strict orders to get another set of weapons and armor. He was to find out where the army had moved to, and catch up to them.

After hearing the tale his man had told, the demon sent in the group of necromancers to mop up the undead. There were a total of three necromancers in the group. The necromancers followed one woman.

She was a specialized type of necromancer. She could raise undead like any necromancer, but her specialty was taking control of another’s summoned creature.

She was a human. She wore long black robes, with purple embroidery. She carried a staff of enhancement. It increased the potency of all of her necromantic powers.

She had sworn to serve the demon, after he saved her life. Her parents worshipped Undine, and were persecuted by the followers of Salamander the fire goddess. Salamander’s followers started a fire to burn her house down. The demon found her days later, covered in burns and starving.

He fed her, and healed her burns. Not because he was benevolent, but because he needed loyal followers. Even though she knew she was only a pawn to him, she still chose to stay with her savior.

The woman didn’t sense any undead as she traversed through the forest where the man had fought them. It was almost as if the man had made the entire story up, except she knew how he loved his gear.

The woman summoned a few lesser skeletons to help with the search. She summoned ten animal skeletons, six squirrels and four birds. They spread out in all directions. The squirrels scampered up and around trees, and the birds flew over them.

She could see all of the information her undead minions could. Her ability to analyze the information her minions saw was phenomenal. She could perfectly control and manipulate ten undead based on the information she got from them. Anymore and her ability to understand their situations, and control them accordingly dropped.

Ten was the perfect number to control. Of course she would instantly exchange them if she found one of the enemy’s undead. That way the mana consumption would remain with the summoner. Her ‘Necro Thief’ spell was a one of a kind spell that made her the best necromancer ever.

She sat in a clearing, waiting to find, or be found by, the undead. She found the hunting party that the other man was supposed to take out, but she didn’t see any undead besides her own. She could sense undead at up to 100 yards in any direction; that included sensing them from her undead minions.

She ordered the other two necromancers to make a boundary to weaken any incoming undead. If any undead did manage to sneak up they would be deflected by the barrier that surrounded a twenty foot circle around her. The barrier extended ten feet above and below. It formed a sphere around the area.

She made sure not to allow her undead to go close to the camp. If they were somehow spotted she would not be the one to bring ruin to her leader.

After several fruitless hours she took another approach. Instead of using undead to search, she expanded her death aura as far as possible. It was a bit risky for her, since she could b e overwhelmed by a powerful rival necromancer while doing this.

This would definitely attract undead though. She continued to expand her aura until she was sure no undead were coming. She had several methods to find other necromancers, and undead. After all, she had to have SOME way to find her free weapons.

The three searched all day, and far into the night. They didn’t manage to find anything. They returned to camp. The woman’s mouth gaped open when the camp was insight.

The entire section of the forest they hid in was on fire! She quickly made many undead to help put the fire.

Kretchof’s POV.

I released my zombies. I raised twenty ‘rotting corpses’ in the place of all four zombies. Rotting corpses were a minor version of zombies. They could not regenerate, nor put themselves back together after decapitated. I added a little spice to them. Master had given me a few of something he called ‘flaming fun orbs’. They exploded when the encountered too much pressure. I opened up the corpses and gently inserted the orbs into each one. As long as they didn’t get hit in the spot where the orbs were, they could fight until decapitated. I had hid the orbs in different locations for each corpse. There wasn’t much of a visible difference between rotting corpses and zombies, so I was going to use the confusion they caused to get them close to the leader of the army. If I took him out master would be pleased. The army would slowly tear itself to pieces after that.

The three necromancers in the army were sent out. Anyone with a necromantic aura can sense another aura of the same type. As a lich, my sensing ability was tens of times better than living necromancers. After they were sent out I sent in half of my corpses. The corpses surrounded the camp before they attacked. The leader sensed something amiss before the attack even started. I’d like to have said good job, but he put my plan off by several seconds. By extension he stalled my master’s plan. No one interrupts my master without his permission!

I sent the group that was ready in. The other half were using some of the stockpiles of bows and arrows my master had granted to me. The attack started by drawing all of their attention to one side of the camp using nine archers, and three melee units. The other seven melee units, and one archer, waited until the time was perfect to attack. When I signaled them they ran to the camp. The battle was beautiful. The fools that dared to oppose my master began attacking the melee zombies that came from the direction the arrows were raining down in. The archers in the demon’s army took out one of the melee units before the demon’s fighters even made it to them. They didn’t decapitate it, but rather shot arrows right through its brain. The corpse fell forward, so its orb did not explode. The other two were luckier. They managed to avoid the fatal arrows, and get to the fighters.

The two fighters quickly took out the two melee units, but not without loss. They killed both undead at the same time. When the fighters decapitated them, they made sure to fall in a way to land on their orbs. The explosion was loud, loud and deadly. It blew the arm off one of the attackers. His screams would have pleased master, so I smiled in his place. The archers dropped their bows at that point, and ran into the battle holding spears. Many of them met similar ends as the one that had its brain burrowed through. They intentionally landed so they would explode though.

I had set a guideline for them earlier. The first one to fall when not close to enemies, would not let the orb explode, the rest would make them exploded. The forest floor was littered with small craters after the corpses were dealt with. The group I sent in the back made it through. They looted whatever they could, and ran away before the sentinels found out they were being stolen from. I had them focus on anything that looked valuable, but made it clear to take anything they could hold. I had them run into the forest, and bury the items in a certain location. I did not follow them.

I had relented my raven for a mole. I ordered the mole to dig a hole big enough to hold at least a dozen sets of armor, and enough provisions to fuel the army for a week. The hole didn’t reach the top of the ground. The undead had to dig for about three or four feet to put the items in it. When all of the items dropped, the undead moved to a new location. They stood vigilant watch over the area about fifty yards to the south of the hole, after upturning a bit of soil.

The mole brilliantly succeeded in its next job. It was to fill in the top of the hole, and bring the items to a base established by my master. The base had a hidden entrance. To get inside one had to move through vines and bushes to find the trunk of a tree. The tree had an opening carved out of its trunk. The opening was facing a small cliff my master made. The opening had just enough room for someone to squeeze in if they had armor on. The opening had a stone ladder melded to the wall of the tree, and led straight down. At the bottom was a small hallway, which led under the cliff. My master had made a semi-defensible base under the cliff. The excess earth was made into the cliff to hide it. My master was a genius if I do say so myself. Which I do.

The hole was then filled with earth so the enemies could not find the base my master so painstakingly created. A few orbs were set at the entrance so I could destroy the base if I deemed it necessary. Of course my master left a secret escape route in the room he made for me. The fact that he made me something so nice nearly brought tears to my undead eyes. Now I had to catalogue the items I stole, and figure out where to store them. After that I would need to find a way to get them to my master. I hoped he would be pleased by the efforts I showed.

Voice’s POV

We waited for several minutes until we heard a rumbling. I got the fire mana ready. We were all crammed into the small cube, the only light coming from Sol. I activated the earth mana when i felt the tremors get close, and stop.

The walls crushed another one. I sent an explosive amount of fire mana in the cube, and set it off. The cube exploded into the nearby area with a deafening roar. The burnt-worm stew strewn across the floor.

I sent out another blast of fire after my exp didn’t go up. My exp bar dinged. I reached level 35. I put my points into int, just like I had when I reached level 34 two days ago. My group was safe thanks to the four feet of thick wall separating us from the hallway. The remains quickly de-rezed and I opened a doorway to collect the loot.

“45” I counted to EDI. This was the 45th worm we had killed so far. The drops had been identical, except for the green vial Heather drank. We would get a small slab of worm meat that didn’t create more worms. It was a ‘worm heart’. Eating the heart improved health regeneration by 50% for an hour. It was nothing compared to the vial’s 200% permanent boost, but I had to make due.

Time reversal:

I had to logout soon after the first encounter with the worms. I was furious at Heather for drinking the vial. I didn’t want to do anything that could harm my reputation with EDI, and if I stayed I might have ended up killing Heather. I had decided to slowly make EDI want me romantically. When I had thought of that in the forest, a giant lightbulb had gone off. I may not have romantic feelings towards her but it was always nice to have someone fawning over me.

That’s the reason for most of my relationships after all. I wasn’t feeling lonely or anything, I just wanted to feel control over someone else for a bit. Having someone romantically attracted to you would make them putty if you played it right.

I made an excuse of using the break time. I beat my bed in frustration for several minutes. The pain Heather caused me did not relent. I gave up on trying to vent my frustration out in thirty minutes. After that I wanted to see if I could gather any more of the vial. It was a unique item, but even unique items could have their effects replicated partially.

I decided at the time to look up some ideas on how to kill enemies like the worms. There weren’t really any games that had that specific type of enemy, but many games had enemies with quick regen, or that could split into smaller enemies when damaged.

The consensus with killing enemies that split into smaller groups was to kill as many as possible, as fast as possible. The best scenario was killing the enemy before it split. I took several of the ideas on how to do that into consideration while looking at how to deal with enemies that regenerated.

The best way to stop an enemy that regenerated was by applying a detrimental effect. The effect was often bleeding or poison, but some games were advanced enough to allow crippling as a debilitating effect.

I took the ideas from many of the sites I looked up, and tried to formulate my plan. When I got back in the game EDI was already there. It was weird that EDI’s logout time was the same as mine, and that she always seemed to log in at the exact same moment as I did. I had never once seen her log in or out of the game. Remembering what she told me about her dying I decided to let the thought drop.

When I came back into the game, my anger almost flared again. Seeing Heather made me remember what had happened a half hour ago. I clicked the notice button that was blinking in the corner of my eye.

An update has occurred.

Upon death, skill levels will potentially drop. Exp and items will still drop as normal.

Players can now set 1 ‘Save Point’.

The ‘SP’ must be set to a recognized city, village, campsite, or similar location.

The player can now teleport to that ‘SP’ once per day. This ability cannot be used while in combat, or under adverse status effects. This ability cannot be used while falling, drowning, or in any potentially dangerous situation. The player must remain stationary while activating ‘SP’.

Death will no longer give the one day forced logout ban.

Dying will force the player to spawn at their last ‘Save Point’.

If the player does not have a ‘SP’ they will be teleported to their starter town.

New Races have been discovered!

Players can now view how many PCs have their race.

I was glad to see that no one else had the idea to fuse the three elven races in the same way I did.

The subtraction of the forced logout was, in my opinion, the single best update the game had done so far. It was weird how the people didn’t need to logout for this one, but it was cool that the system could make an update function without ruining the business for an entire day.

I went to where EDI and Heather were sitting. I sat down with them, interrupting their conversation. “I’m thinking of a plan to kill the worms.” They both turned towards me.

“What kind of plan?” EDI asked with a curious look.

“Well, I thought to create some sort of barrier. The barrier would be made of stone. I would get the area around the barrier ready to explode. I would probably impale the worm while it was close to the barrier, then set off the explosion. The only problems would be how to be close enough to know the worm was there and set it off, while making sure we didn’t get hurt.”

As I pondered the dilemma, EDI came up with a solution. “How about you create a box of earth near the explosion sight? I know you can make stone houses and such, so it shouldn’t be a problem. Then we could be safe, and still attack the worms.”

I nodded at the idea, then shook my head. “If we were close enough to set it off, then it would be like we were in an oven. I need to make a really big explosion to kill the worms.” EDI looked downcast. “BUT! But it’s a good idea. Maybe if we added in a layer of water to absorb some of the impact of the flames.” I thought about how to make it perfect for a few minutes.

I actually started drawing on the dusty floor, making different plans, and trying to iron out the flaws in each. Eventually EDI and I decided on the best one.

I slowly created an empty cube of earth in the wall of the tunnel. The mana I took away was used to create two things. One was a relatively thick wall, while the other was a super dense earth mana concentration.

I closed the room off with a bit of natural earth mana, and started on the next part. The room was about 6ftx6ftx6ft. It was a little cramped with two people, two fairies, and a rabid rabbit, but we made it work.

I created two long tunnels about an inch in diameter each. The holes led outside of the area I intended to nuke. They were to provide us with fresh air. About six inches from the entrance I had sealed up, I created a secondary wall. The wall wasn’t thick, but that wasn’t the purpose. I had Tear fill the resulting space with water. The water was to act as a shield against most of the heat.

I would push any fire mana that made it in there back past the water, to increase the heat of the explosion. The lump of earth mana had a pivotal role in the scheme.

When the worm, or worms, made it past the mana lump, I would raise it. I would essentially create a cube to box the worms in. I would then force one of the walls to move forward, while making the explosion. The walls would meet, and crush the worms. At the same time the fire would start melting the worms, and stop smaller worms from materializing because of the blood and gore the bigger worms caused.

Five minutes after I created the room two worms came. I closed off the area behind them after they entered. I started crushing them, after a moment I added in the fiery explosion. The mana drain on me was not negligible. I had to sustain the entire process, so the cost was high. OF course it was infinitely less than if I used my own mana to do all of this.

I had Sol light the room up. If I didn’t we would be in a small dark room, almost like a torture chamber. While it would have been fun to see Heather and EDI’s reactions, I didn’t have time to mess around.

The plan was a rousing success. The two worms were crushed easily by the earth walls. The walls I used as nets to catch the fire mana in the air. It was much easier to concentrate on moving multiple things if they all occupied the same area. I almost mixed the mana once though. Something like magma was cool, but not what I needed right then.

When the worms began to pop, I executed the explosion. The fire within the cube roasted any newly formed worms in an instant. I continued to compress the box, while at the same time roasting the inside.

The water barrier I had made before proved its worth instantly. The temperature started rising in our box as soon as I created the explosion. The water was obviously boiling. I say obviously because the wall I created started expanding slightly. A sign that the water in the area had all turned to steam. With nowhere to go, the steam forced the area around itself to expand.

I decided to create some vent holes on the other side after this experiment. After a solid minute of crushing and grilling, I got an exp boost. The ‘battle’ was over. I left the safe room and checked on the outcome. The area looked completely clean, one would never have guessed two giant worms were just massacred. It had cost me a lot of time to think up the plan, and create the trap; but the mana cost was not too high to be useful.

EDI was busy marveling at the efficiency with which I killed the worms, while Heather was upset at the distinct lack of physical combat. I made the safe room a bit bigger, and added the vent holes to the water area. The vent holes went through the ceiling of the tunnel. I created another small room for the steam to go. The depleted earth mana went into the mana lump.

I collected the dropped loot, and looked at my dissection percentage. I had gained 2% more exp for worms. So I guess that means that killing them this way only gives me 1% each? Geez that’s not a lot.

The loot was dropped was two pieces of worm meat. Each one had identical effects. They each increased health regen rate by 50% or an hour.

Since I didn’t want to kill us, I couldn’t make a fire to cook with. Fire plus enclosed space equals death. I instead poured in fire mana into the meat.

I kept the fire mana evenly coated throughout the meat slabs. In only two minutes the meat slabs were a perfect golden brown. I coated them with some of the dried Blood Lotuses I had, and handed sliced them into even parts. EDI and I shared the largest parts, while Heather got the smallest. Heather was mostly sustained by blood.

I also had Heather run outside to get Lily.

She looked apprehensive when she entered our box. I had EDI explain the situation. If this girl was going to try to kill me, I was going to make her watch some gruesome shit.

I made her listen as the next sets of worms came in. At first she acted like it was disgusting, but she soon stopped. After the fifth or sixth group Lily ‘toughened up’. She was very convincing. It honestly looked like she wanted my approval.

Ancestor must have felt I was getting too close to believing the girl. “Voice, there is a 99% chance she is lying.”

I know Ancestor. I know, don’t worry.

I faked a smile, and pet Lily’s head when she made it look like she steeled herself. She nuzzled up to my hand. After a second, in which I almost gagged from the shitty acting of the girl, I released her. She looked at my hand in a way that suggested longing.

I blatantly ignored the look. After the seventh group of enemies were dealt with, I got a notice.

For creating, and successfully implementing, many plans and schemes you have learned the skill: Tactics.

Tactics

Current Level: Novice Level 7 Exp 0.00%

This skill allows for better battle plans to be made. This skill will show faults in any plans made by the user.

Each level in this skill will increase the amount of faults this skill will show with each plan. For every rank, you increase this skill, it will increase the details of the faults.

This skill will only show faults based on information the user knows. This skill will only show faults based on how the user knows the enemy will react. This skill scales in power with Leadership. For every 10 Leadership, this skill gains one level, up to level 100.

Can be fused to Group Skill: Survival. If fused to Survival will upgrade to Tactical Survival.

I could fuse it to Combat Learning, but decided to try Skill Fusion first. I had never had a group skill evolve because of a skill fusion, so I tried it out.

Tactical Survival

Current Level: Adept Level 50 Exp 00.00%

Not only can you survive in the wilderness, you are so unbelievably adept at it, that you can survive with nothing going in. You know how the way of the wilderness works, and you can bend that way to your will. You can instantly form a plan for survival in any situation, and can easily follow through with that plan.

You can teach basic survival to anyone willing to learn. You can teach advanced survival to those dedicated to learning it.

This skill allows you to use the benefits from: Automatic Skinning, Cooking, Climbing, Skinning, and Fishing. This skill can be toggled on or off.

You are a practiced survivalist. You can survive just about anywhere. For creating the Group Skill: Survival, the skill Fishing has been generated. Fishing has been automatically added to your Survival skill.

The higher the level Survival reaches the easier it will be to survive anywhere.

To level this skill you must do an action that would be encompassed in one of the skills that were consumed to make this skill.

For creating the Group Skill: Survival, and for going long periods without eating, you have gained the Trait: Improved Digestion.

This skill has evolved into Tactical Survival. Your chances of surviving in harsh environments has drastically increased.

Now THAT is a skill I can use! I can freaking teach others the survival skill!? HELL YEAH!

I was a little excited to say the least. Any self-replicating skill was worth it. I let Combat Learning absorb the skill ‘Tactics’.

Tactical Combat Training

Current Level: Adept Level 50 Exp 00.00%

You have studied the art of fighting. You know multiple forms of attack, and at least one to defend. You can easily tell the best ways to defeat an opponent, just by judging from past encounters. Training your body and mind to do combat will greatly benefit you. By seeing move sets and abilities involving weapons, you quickly become able to counter or block them. You can now quickly draw or holster weapons, even while in combat. You can now materialize a dagger for thirty seconds at the cost of ten percent of your maximum stamina.

Fighting now drains stamina and satiety slower. The longer you train in your proficient weapons, the less stamina it takes to wield them, both in and out of combat. You become proficient in weapons much more quickly. You no longer need a teacher to fully grasp a weapon, or type of armor.

While wearing light armor, or no armor, you gain 25% stamina regeneration.

This upgraded skill allows you to use the benefits from: Heavy Armor, Staff Mastery, Knife Master, Critical Hit, Though Skin, Technique Thief, and Tactics.

You have studied the art of fighting. You know multiple forms of attack, and at least one to defend.

The skill Critical Hit is now a passive ability. Combat Learning can activate Critical Hit, at most, once per minute. This does not consume Stamina, Mana, or Health. Combat Learning will activate Critical Hit, whenever you score a critical hit, at most once per minute.

This group skill gives you a competency bonus to all skills it encompasses. For every five levels, rounded up until level 94, you gain 5% bonus damage/defense while using anything this skill encompasses. Each rank of this skill grants the user one Combat related Trait. For every rank this skill grants you a 5% damage resistance.

For learning the art of Tough Skin, this skill has ranked up to at least Apprentice level.

To level this skill you must do an action that would be encompassed in one of the skills that were consumed to make this skill, or study about combat. You can study the skills that that make up Combat Learning, or about combat in general.

This skill has been upgraded to encompass more skills. The exp and level will not be adjusted, but the exp requirement will be.

For creating the Group Skill: Combat Learning, you have gained the Trait: Fighter’s Spirit.

For learning enough about combat to upgrade the Group Skill: Combat Learning, you have gained the Evolution Trait: Resistance.

For raising the Group Skill: Tactical Combat Training to Adept, you have gained the Evolution Trait: Flexibility.

This skill has evolved into Tactical Combat Training. Your use of battle plans makes it possible to survive in even the most dire of combat situations.

Flexibility is the perfect trait for those that love combat. You are able to move in ways most people would never dream. The more you train your flexibility, the more powerful this trait will become. This trait can evolve into better versions.

Seeing that new group skills, I concluded three things.

1) Group Skills could evolve. I don’t know why Skill Mastery hadn’t evolved, but the other two evolved once I got them to level 50. They might have evolved from getting to level 50. It might have been due to Tactics though. They also might have gotten to level fifty since the evolved. I would have to do some experimenting with my skills to find out.

2) Tactics was an over the top awesome level skill.

3) I now had to decide what to do about armor. I could continue to wear my heavy armor, which didn’t really impede me in any way, or I could use no armor for now. That 25% stamina regen made me VERY excited. I would be able to battle for much longer. With the amount of extra stalling I could do, I would be able to build up a powerful spell to launch.

I thought it over as I ate my portion of worm meat. The regen ability these gave was just nice to have. While the meat itself tasted bland and gross, with a little of the Blood Lotus, the taste was easily overcome.

I decided to keep my heavy armor on for now. I might have tried out no armor, but that piece of shit update made it so I would be teleported back to Rand if I died. I was NOT about to go through all of the work of coming here again.

I continued to kill worms for a while.

After one random worm died I asked, “So, EDI. Would you like to spar? I mean at least that way we could do something instead of just waiting here twiddling out thumbs.”

EDI had been talking to Lily. That was a dangerous thing. If EDI got too close, Lily could use her to get to me. EDI thought about it for a moment. Even Heather seemed to be getting closer to Lily. As for Sol and Tear, well I didn’t really know what they were thinking. They just had a ‘conversation’ by themselves.

“Sure, but why don’t we include Lily as well, she’ll need to learn to protect herself. And you said you would train her.”

I inwardly cringed. Letting Lily practice was a double bladed sword. On one hand I could learn her battle style, but she could fake it. On the other hand, she would be able to see my battle style up close. I didn’t really have a ‘style’, besides aiming for the neck though.

“Sure, we can all three ta-“ Heather made a noise. “All FOUR take turns battling. We can switch partners after the duels are done.”

We would spar while we waited. I lost every time to both EDI and Heather. I was sure I could have used magic to win, but that would defeat the purpose of the spars.

I wanted to learn how to beat EDI if she ever became a problem. I was not one to be betrayed by someone I trusted. That’s why I never trusted anyone.

I also wanted to learn how to properly handle Lily, and while I was at it I decided to learn tactics against Heather too. Although Heather was the one least likely to betray me. Lily made an angry face several times during the matches. It was always when I was losing. She was probably angry she couldn’t get any info off me.

I was horrible, and showed no real signs of improving. I could have easily blamed it on my class. In fact it WAS my class’s fault. I had taken a few lessons in martial arts before, it couldn’t have been my fault.

I quickly learned how to avoid and counter all three of my opponents, but I could only put that into practice with one: Lily. I was sure she was holding back her true combat abilities though. That meant I was the weakest physical combatant in our group.

At least I was the most powerful magical person in the group. Hopefully. I squinted at Lily to see if she had an aura.

She didn’t, but even I could hide my aura if I chose to. Although I didn’t know what kind of aura I gave off. I decided to also check that out at some point.

After the 40th kill, the worms stopped showing up as frequently. It seemed like it was random at that point. I was tired of waiting, but decided the best plan was to relax and let the easy kills come to me.

The 45th worm took five entire hours to get to us. We had spared so long, I was basically a giant bruise. We had spent a total of five in-game days killing the worms. That was far, FAR, too long for my tastes.

“Alright guys, it’s time to move out.” I couldn’t wait that long again. The battles with EDI were too intense. Any time I showed a slight bit of improvement, EDI beat me harder. She had to hold back just to barely beat the shit out of me. What the fuck would have been like if she went all out!?

EDI asked, “I thought we agreed to stay here until we were done killing all one hundred.” EDI would not let anything pass. She was way too into all that democracy bullshit. If you are with me, it’s a mother fucking dictatorship. BITCH!

EDI and Heather would lure the worms into an area. We would prepare the area beforehand. After they led the targets in, I would crush and incinerate them. The worms not EDI and Heather. Well maybe if they get too cheeky.

Lily would be beside me the entire time. Making her go out with EDI and Heather would just strengthen the bonds.

The trap was basically setting up a room much like the one we were in before, and staying in there as I torched the fuckers. EDI and Heather also had a small ‘safe room’ the would get into. The hardest part of the entire ordeal, was the fact that the tunnels seemed to be a maze.

They would branch off and loop back more times then I could count. We had to figure out a way to indicate the path back to the trap.
