《Kinda Real Online》31. Brain dead

After his announcement, everyone in the room was silent, waiting for Marcus to enlighten us. All Marcus did was stand there, slightly swaying, until he collapsed. The assistance that had rushed to help him when he first flew across the room immediately rushed to his side.
"He seems stable. It's almost like he just fell asleep."
The doctor pulled out one of his crystal things, like what he used to examine me, and he tossed it to one of the assistants. "Get some readings, we need to be absolutely sure we know what he is going through. Bwyd, Lily, can you do anything to access his condition?"
I just shook my head, but Lily seemed to remember that she was our party healer, "Oh! Let me see." She made her bell noises, and her colored lights showed up, just like normal. "Oh, this is different. They have voices."
She started making bell noises, and the lights seemed to respond with their own bell sounds. They were a high pitch, and almost sounded like a bunch of the really small wind chimes. After a few seconds the lights all went to Marcus, and they seemed to wrap around him. It almost looked like smoeone made a swarm of fireflies into a blanket and draped it over him. The people around him started using their devices to examine the lights, but judging by their expressions, they didn't get what they wanted.
It wasn't too much later that the lights went back to Lily. They had a conversation in bells and chimes, and then she waved her hand and the lights all disappeared.
"So, they said that Marcus is a big dummy, and he shouldn't touch live exposed interdimensional rifts without protection. They also said he was very lucky. He only fractured his mind a couple times. Also, they can't fix stupid. Or mind fractures, but apparently those fix on their own."

The doctor pointed to a few of his assistants, "You get him into a bed. Place a meditation crystal in there with him, that should help with most mental issues. So long as his mind is not completely destroyed. Also, I want everyone to keep away from the, what did you say it was?"
"Live exposed interdimensional rift."
"Right, stay away from the LEIR. I want a ten foot perimeter set up. Also we need some monitoring crystals in case it starts changing, or expanding. Bwyd, Lily, I want you to stay with Marcus until he wakes up. If you could periodically monitor his condition, and inform us if things get worse. The rest of you, start analyzing all the data we have. We need to find answers in case this becomes a threat."
When he finished giving orders, everyone jumped into motion at once. Well, everyone except me and Lily. We just kind of stood there wondering what happened, while everyone was moving around us. Luckily Lily saw them taking Marcus out of the room and took off running to catch up. She was pretty good at dodging past everyone, or under in a few cases. I didn't want to attempt the same things she did, so I just Shadow Stepped straight to the door. No one seemed to notice, or if they did, they didn't care.
We followed the men with Marcus through a couple of hallways, and ended up in a room that looked a lot like a hospital room, except instead of monitors, and earth medical things, there were crystals, and crystal screens. They set marcus in the bed, and all but one of them left.
"Don't mess with anything. Just wait here, and let us know if something happens." He started to leave then seemed to think of something, "You can contact someone by touching this crystal." He pointed to a small crystal that was near the bed, then he left the room.

"So, Lily."
"Yeah?"
"If this is real, should we be worried about Marcus?"
"Nope." She looked like she was doing something magical, her hands were glowing anyway.
"But we should probably be more careful."
"Probably." She closed her eyes.
"Do you think we can actually die here?"
She seemed a little surprised by my question, and gave me a serious look, "Probably. I don't know if that means we really die, but I'm pretty sure this universe is real, our bodies are real, and our magic is real. So I'm pretty sure that dying would be bad, but we also have magic, so that's kinda cool."
"So that would mean that all these people are real too, right?"
"Yeah, they aren't NPCs, and I bet they'd do anything to keep themselves safe. If anything happens we stick together, okay?"
"Of course, I couldn't abandon you, or a brain dead Marcus."
"He's not braindead right now, just fractured, or something. Brain dead is just his normal state of being."
"Then he's the smartest braindead person I've ever met."
We both laughed a little. Kind of like one of those laughs where you want to laugh, but you don't want to disturb anyone, so you supress it. Then we sat there in silence for a while, until one of the assistants came in with a blue crystal pyramid. It was about as big as a bowling ball, but pyramid shaped.
"This is the meditation crystal. It helps to calm the mind, so if your friend has mental stress or damage, this should help. It's also great for sleep problems, so if you feel tired, just get up and walk in the hallway a bit and you should wake right up."
We didn't answer him, but Lily gave him a thumbs up and he set the pyramid on a table and left. It wasn't long after that we both fell asleep.

A Budding Scientist in a Fantasy World
Alice is a girl who loves science and lives on Earth. Then, suddenly, she was punted into another dimension. A dimension where magic and monsters roam the land, swords and sorcery reign supreme, and, for some reason, a System keeps dinging at her and telling her that her stats and levels are increasing. As someone who loves exploring mysteries, Alice is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery. After all, everything has to have a ‘cause,’ including the System, right? What to expect: This story is going to be a LitRPG set in a fantasy world. However, unlike many LitRPG’s, the system has both a definite beginning and definite limits to what it is able to accomplish – rather than a singularly omnipotent, omniscient being that is tied to the laws of the world, the way systems are usually presented in LitRPG’s, the system is close to both, but has definite limits and rules which it operates by. This story is also relatively slow, since that is my writing style. The main character also begins the story as a young, 15-year old girl who has yet to finish high school, and is going to explore more of the world around her as she grows as a person and starts to get her feet under her.
