《Rain Revert》Chapter 45: [ Monitoring ]

In the patch of trees, Rain who was on his way back to the Lair raised his brows. The leaves on the ground were blown around by the wind and a woman suddenly appeared.
“Where are you going?” The woman asked. When the woman stepped over and was illuminated by the light coming from the flames burning in the campsite, Rain saw that it was none other than Celis, no Celia.
“Did her highness send you to monitor me, Miss Celia?” Rain indifferently smiled.
“What are you talking about? I’m not my sister, I’m Celis,” The woman smiled sweetly.
“Don’t pretend, I already memorize the air around you sisters…”
Celia’s smile becomes even wider. “That’s interesting. I thought it was just luck but, you really can tell us apart… I wonder, do you have some kinda trick to it? I’m curious,”
“It’s nothing~” Rain said with a faint smiled. “Celis was a beauty who can steal and soothed a man’s heart with just her voice alone while you, Celia were so beautiful and matured that any men’s heart who heard your voice will go hipidy-dap due to a different charm.”
“… …”
“No matter how you act, each of your personality and character will still leak no matter how good of an actress you are,”
Celia blushed as the more she listens to Rain’s flattery. “I never thought you have the skill to play with women,”
Rain didn’t reply and instead spread his senses in all directions. The moment Celia appeared; Rain felt that the princess would certainly be in the surroundings as well, hiding. He secretly activated his magic, feeling the entire molecules in the air; he senses every kind of motion.
Suddenly, his ears twitched, someone had stepped on a cluster of flowers… Who was it?
2 people, no 3, 4 -four people. If I’m not mistaken, aside from Princess Leticia, Doram, Garas, and Celis should be present.
Rain sighed. It seems like, it was really difficult to escape from them. He then slowly turned his head at his right side and said with a faint smile, “Your Highness, Sir Doram and Sir Garas…” then he turned his gaze in front, to the big tree beside Celia, “…and you too, Celis, did I do something wrong to warrant this kind of strict monitoring?” He asked with a bitter smile.

“… …”
“At least I don’t remember…”
“It’s not that, we’re just a bit interested as to where you are going at this kind of time,” The princess followed by her two bodyguards slowly walked out from behind the tree four to five meters away from Rain’s position.
She looked calm on the surface but in fact, just like the two bodyguards beside her, she was actually startled inwardly. He senses us? And very accurate at that…
He’s not simple…
“And why is that? I don’t think it’s interesting at all,” Rain pretended put on an embarrassed smile.
“Rain, it’s not like we don’t trust you, we’re just worried,” Celis who stood beside her twin sister spoke with her trademark gentle expression and voice. Now that she was standing side by side with Celia, Rain can’t help but think, they really look alike.
“The night inside the forest is very dangerous...” Celis expression was filled with concern. “Walking alone would cost you your life…”
“I’m fine, I can protect myself… Although I admit that all of you are much stronger than me, however, I’m also not a pushover. Protecting myself, I can at least do that much,”
Rain answered as he indifferently stood still at the center of the encirclement made by the princess and her guards and the twin Geminin Sisters.
“Rain,”
“Then, tell me Rain,” Princess Leticia started walking towards Rain. “Why are you so adamant about keeping your family a secret? Is there something you don’t want others to know?”
Rain looked at her and sighed, “Truthfully, if you really want to know, I wouldn’t mind.”
Rain’s sudden words startled the princess as she unconsciously stops on her track. She had actually expected for Rain to be stubborn about it…
However, it’s not really a big deal if you think about it. Probably, in that case, he would be left alone and go back… if there’s no problem. He can just go and negotiate with them to lead them inside the Monster Lair to look for the Excalibur in exchange for freedom.

“My family is unusual, you see…” Rain started as he tussled his black hair. “They are –”
“Gyaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!!” But before he could continue his words, a scream tore through the night sky. The sharpness of the sound sounded like an awl piercing through the night.
The sound was a little familiar to Rain and he unconsciously turned his head in the direction of the scream. It was unnerving and hateful for those who heard it, making them feel frustrated and irritated.
“That’s, that’s a flock of monsters!! Oh god, A dozen Werebats!!” A fearful cry sounded out from the camp as they saw the Werebats flapping their wings while making ear-piercing noise.
There were at least over a dozen flying Werebats flying across the sky.
Rain’s eyes widened. Did they chase him till here?!
Similarly, Princess Leticia also thought the same and frowned. These monsters!
“Doram, Garas, prepare to fight –!?”
Suddenly, out from the woods, a shadow shot out and went towards Rain. Since Rain wasn’t using his magic anymore, he only noticed a bit late.
“Rain!!” The twin sisters were startled and they immediately tried to protect him. Celis chanted her magic while Celia draws out her sword and rushed towards him.
Doram and Garas also started to move but it was clear that they would not make it in time.
When the moonlight illuminated the shadow, they saw that it was a Werebat. And for some reason, the Werebats face was extremely distressed as if she was crying. She crashed into Rain.
“Human! Human! Help!!” The Werebats cries almost causing Celia and the others who were rushing anxiously towards Rain almost tripped to the ground. Even Princess Leticia’s eyes widened and Celis unconsciously stop her chanting.
There was no attack; instead, the Werebat was clinging to Rain, crying desperately while crying for help!
What is this?
What the heck is going on?
“Human! Human Help! Lamian!!”
The Werebat was anxiously crying to Allen while its wings were hugging his shoulders. Rain who was shocked for a moment finally regained his senses and the moment he had heard the word Lamian –he had already realized why this Werebat was saying.
One after another, the dozen Werebats ignored the camp contrary to the warriors' expectation and descended around Rain, clinging to him – though they were certainly acting overfamiliar.
!! Rain coughed awkwardly and peeled the clinging Werebats from his body. “They’re angry… am I right?” He said while smiling bitterly.
Originally, Rain was scared of the Werebats, however, seeing them like this really soothed one’s heart – more like a desire to tease surge through him as she watched them desperately crying for help.
“Human help! Tribe killed! Lamian so scary!” The Werebats begged as they tried to cling to him again – though since they are almost naked, only wearing a small piece of cloth to cover their chest, it’s quite stimulating. Rain even felt a damp region touching his waist when a Werebat clung to him so tightly.
!! Coughed sounded out from the side. The Werebats as well as Rain turned their heads and saw the princess looking at him, confused and a bit surprised.
“What’s the meaning of this?” She stared at Rain with eyes as sharp as knives.
“Ah! The bad human! The bad human!” One of the Werebats cried out the moment they saw the princess and the others. “Steal human! Bad human! Shiii!!” The Werebats growled dangerously as if they were about to attack them.

Bitter
The story of a girl who finds her life is not what she wanted. So she gets another one. Schedule: Story has been completed. Book One is available free on Amazon and EPUB. Books Two to Five are out now. Final Book out soon. Chapters will be around 500-1000 words. This will not change so if you don't like reading very short chapters wait till the end of the week or even end of the month. This many chapters a week isn't easy to pull off so please bear that in mind. This is a VRMMORPG story, but the ones I've read tend to use VR as an excuse to get into a fantasy world and then don't really play up the game aspect other than pulling up a status screen every now and then. To me, MMOs are about more than the fantasy setting. Bugs, exploits, devs who don't understand their own game, OP classes, over the top nerfs, p2w, ridiculous RNG, cash shop fiasco, lockboxes, raging players, broken mechanics, limited bag space, tedious crafting and above all that, a company trying to squeeze money out if its playerbase while pretending they're just in the business of having fun. Of course, then there's the orcs and elves. This story is about finding yourself in a completely immersive fantasy game, but it's also about what a game like that would really be like.

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.

A Mildly Odd Reality Breaker
Omar receives an unexpected visitor who comes baring a gift—a "registration ticket"—in the form of a small metal card. The ticket is itself an offer to participate in the game, "Reality Break." Accepting this offer means that Omar will be able to perceive the true nature of reality where there is not one, but two dimensions of time, and in this second dimension history changes (and somewhat "frequently"). Along with this, he will also gain access to the "chronopause"; another reality that is not so much parallel to our own as it is perpendicular, which acts as both a place and the natural boundary between non-sequential points on the timeline. Using the chronopause, Omar will become a chrononaut with the ability to travel through time, and as a player, he will be given a cybernetic interface and his own portable extradimensional storage space. It's a strange conversation, but due to Omar's dismally short attention span, he only consciously hears that last bit about the portable pocket space, and that's only after the physics-defying void is opened in his living room and literally waved in front of his face. Reality is certainly stranger than most people realize, but then again, so is Omar. Thankfully, he responds well to shiny things, and for better or for worse, his chronic inattentiveness is the least of his psychological issues. Omar also has a mild form of "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" which presents itself as an occasional, arbitrary need to disobey others (especially authority figures). However, his oddest psychological issue by far is his "abnormally hyperactive" subconscious mind. Outwardly and consciously, Omar is a lazy, apathetic man-child prone to mildly asinine behavior. Subconsciously, he's some sort of genius capable of extraordinary feats of cognition. Most of the time, Omar is a (technically) functioning adult, but in order to live as such, he must rely entirely upon unusual abilities he's completely unaware of, despite the fact that he uses them regularly. Up until now, his life had merely been ridiculous, but now it was also a game. Note: The narrative style is that of a reliable narrator with a "3rd-person sarcastic" POV. This story takes place in the Reality Breakers/Chronopause universe.
