Around 60 Years ago
(Markus Ikovich's POV)
Journal Log, number 1902
Today one of my excavation sites had found something strange, a fossil of some sorts. So, today, i am going to the USA to see what was found there.
Journal Log, number 1903
Well, that was unexpected, we found some kind of skeleton in the middle of the Mojave desert. It's big, bigger than most of the fossils. Being a genetic engineer i don't care if it is a rare or never seen before dinosaur, the only thing that thrills me here is its DNA. I can't wait to do some tests with it, as i am the greatest name in genetics in the whole world, maybe in all mankind.
The curious thing is it's format, it doesn't seem like a reptile, because it's legs are under the body and it's spine follows the same format as the mammals. But things only get more strange, i thought that i found some kind of ancestor of the mammals, because we were able to retrieve it's torso and legs. But then we found it's head, on the tip of an absurd long neck.
Also, we found a tail, but the real deal were it's wings. When i saw it's skeleton fully assembled, it looked like those legends of european dragons. Another characteristic was its color, it was fully black. Very strange indeed... i will take it to my personal base in Siberia to run some tests.
Journal Log, number 1904
I can't believe I was able to get a sample out of these bones, they were so hard that i almost gave up. But now, I only have one sample, and i have to decide what to do with it. After some time analyzing it, I discovered that it didn't match with anything on earth that we found before, and it's even older than the dinosaurs.

It's just amazing! I need to find a test subject to use this sample on! But using it requires a very specific genetic combination, that is very, very rare and I probably won't find it in my lifetime, so i will request help from Russia's government, if we succeed in finding something with this combination and fuse it with the "dragon" sample, we will be able to create something unique and valuable.
Journal Log, number 1924
Well, after five years we finally found my perfect test subject. It's a newborn child, a boy. We "silenced" his family, erased all kinds of information about him and his family, and then we took the boy. After some tests, he was compatible with the DNA from the fossil, then we fused it with him.
The results were incredible! First, his regeneration rate raised dramatically, being able to heal from small cuts in less than one second to big wounds in some seconds. Also, his physical strength improved, even as a newborn, he is strong as a human adult. But we have a problem, his body is not completely fused with the DNA, so his capabilities are limited.
After some tests, we noticed that strong emotions, like happiness, fear, pain, anger, hunger, etc. makes the fusion advance to bigger levels. That means that making him experience extreme emotions will make the DNA be absorbed by his body faster.I then chose someone that is willing to raise the boy for some time to try to make him happy.
Journal Log, number 1932
Well, three years have gone by, and the boy showed some incredible results. His brain developed at an unbelievable rate, and he is now intelligent enough to talk with two months. Also, his body developed faster, even as a three year old, he seems like at least nine. He is also smart enough to understand us and have solid emotions. He also understands his surroundings, so we decided to leave him without any kind of information for what he is, what we are doing with him, etc.

He's very innocent, so it will be easy to fool him. Also, i decided to make some alternative tests with him, because raising him as a happy kid doesn't work anymore, his fusion with the dragon DNA stoped, but it could go even further. My guess is that his body absorbs the DNA by the necessity of survival, if the body isn't in danger, the absorption of the DNA stops. So, i will torture him to make it go faster.
Also, it seems that the woman that i choose to be his mother named him Fafnir. What a ridiculous thing, guinea pigs don't need names.
Journal Log, number 1956
More two years have passed, and the subject is progressing well. He has developed new abilities, like night vision. Also, during one of the sessions, he breathed fire! We opened him(without anesthesia) to see what was happening inside his body. It wasn't the first time we did this, with his regenerative abilities, he stay barely alive. We couldn't find anything though. What a shame.
His brain has developed greatly too, now he is as smart as a human adult. This is a problem, when he begins to question why he is here there will be a real problem... but we can stop him with ease, he is strong and fast, but not invincible. Also, the woman that we chose as his mother has begun to give us some problems, looks like she really cares for him. Well, she was a problem so i executed her.
Journal Log, number 2001
The subject finally discovered about his "mother's" death. And that was me that killed her. well, he got angry and sad, two strong emotions so the fusion of the DNA was finally complete! I can't wait to train him as a war weapon!
Journal Log, last entry found
Well, six years of research, so, today is the last day here in Siberia, i will take the subject with me to my base in Germany to train him and... "educate"... him. Well, there is als-
(A high collision sound is heard)
What the fuck?!
>
(Markus stays silent for some time, only with the alarms and the sound of the security of the base running)
*sight* Well, looks like our little rat was able to escape. Let's see how we can deal with him. Let's see if i can access the cameras from here.... yep, I can.
(sounds of screams, bones breaking, and gunfire for some time.)
Holy shit, i didn't expected for him to become this strong... he's fast! Where the hell he is going? Wait, that door... it's from my room!
(sound of something hitting metal for three times, than a crashing noise and Markus screamed in panic.)
(Fafnir): "Hello, Markus."
(Markus): "H-how the hell do you know my name?!"
(Fafnir): "How? I heard all of the other scientists talking about you. I can hear better than any animal on earth, you know?"
(Sound of steps and struggling)
(Fafnir): "You deserve a slower death, but i will make it fast, i don't have much time. I will take the vehicle out of here and go away, after i kill everyone in this base and erase all the archives here, including your logs."
(Sound of snapping and silence for some time. The audio recorder breaks)

BODY&SHADOW
AN ILLUSTRATED NOVEL • UPDATES TUESDAY AND FRIDAY In a time before living memory, the King Dragon of the Void watched the world and realized there was a crack. He realized that humanity was destroying the rock upon which they lived; they leaked life’s code into the churning chaos. At first the change was imperceptible: nanites overtook microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, amoebas. Insects became increasingly inorganic; birds and lizards followed soon after. Even humans were infected by their own advances, cell by cell, till there was not a person left on earth who wasn’t at least part synthetic, the product of a prior generation’s carelessness. The world’s population was ravaged by mechanical viruses with no vaccines; they were mercilessly overtaken by bacteria that knew no death. Soon, most of the planet was empty and only a handful remained who remembered the hedonist realm they came from; only a few were left who remembered what the world looked like when their buildings touched the sky. The King Dragon of the Void watched the rock turn. He watched humans cower as the Old World fell down around them; watched their great monuments crumble into dusty ruins; watched their codes become precious, ancient gem memories forged under the crushing pressure of so many fallen stones. The world has spun many times around the sun since chaos swallowed man whole. It is a simpler time than the one that died out, but the people now are not immune to the folly of the people before. There is old code everywhere: in the water, in the air, in the trees. The heart of man has been replaced by power cores, many of which are hard-coded with preternatural abilities—when they die, an esoteric mountain sect collects their cores and stores them in their hollow mountain home to preserve the sanctity and dignity of human death. They’ve learned to harness artifacts of the old world, gemstones full of codes their nanite infused bodies can parse as spells imbuing their users with great power; they inlay them into their bodies, into their skins, connected to their cores by copper conduit and gold tracers; they dress themselves in tattoos to advertise their prowess; they battle for relics in arenas, fight for them in the open world wherever they are found. The King Dragon of the Void watches the rock turn and wonders: when will this hunger finally make the rock stop spinning? WELCOME TO FANXING CITY … Twenty-five years ago, Fanxing City and the surrounding lands were commanded by the mad King Zao Beiguan. For many years, the King hoarded wealth, artifacts, food; he demanded tribute from a people already taxed to the edges of their existence and expected they be happy with their circumstances. Noncompliance was often punished harshly, bodies displayed proudly on Fanxing’s streets as a warning, from the city gates to the Zao palace’s golden doors. The youths of several prominent clans came together to overthrow the tyrant and made names for themselves as legendary heroes across the land: Tian, Ren, Feng, Gui, Ma, and Zhenxi. Even wanderers from the Luanshi sect descended from Yunji mountain to aid the rebellion. When the dust settled after three years, Tian Yunyong ascended the throne of Fanxing and swore to honour his slain father’s memory, and has maintained Fanxing’s peace with generosity and mercy where fear and cruelty once reigned.
