《Liberty in the Overlord Universe》19. The World we live in

Chapter 19
We dumped the remaining Guild Levels into creating maids and smaller scale NPCs. Even thought we thought of cloning for the sake of saving time, in the end we decided against it. They were going to become alive, we wanted to give each of them a real distinction and life; cloning them would not achieve that.
While each of the 50 maids looked different, just like Nazarick’s, we tried to make them as beautiful was possible. This was one time we did ask our employees for their preference and help. 50 might seem like a small number in the grand scheme of things but creating 50 handmade lives are…a bit too much as we go.
We gave them a temple priest like clothing but with the traditional black&white typical Maid clothing mixed into it. In addition, we made the clothing ‘fine’ as in delicate and more fitting the body than typical maid uniforms (as in make them look slender). Just to have superiority over Nazarick, we gave each maid 3 Levels. One in race as a homunculus, and the other in Job Class as maid, and one unique job. Finding these jobs was quite harder than we thought it would be, still, I’m sure that they’ll come in handy one day.
As a joke, we made Sengoku into the head butler of Society. He would be the counterpart of Sebas, and honestly, it fits him. We gave him back his kind expression and his seemingly 3 meter tall figure. We recreated him into the Sengoku we know and love…but while he would still complain and all, we made sure his loyalty is to us alone and no one else.
It was 8 years since the game was released. I was 13 years old, still short but huggable like always. Sis was 18, a legal adult. She still acted like a child though…wait, didn’t we always?
The game died down in popularity as Soba Games released its next big game “Gaia”. A game like Yggdrasil but based on Greek Mythology. Thanks to our cyber defense team, the other big companies still failed to compete against us. Since our company offered binding contracts to the more important employees, such as the people who coded to foundations of the game, they were not allowed to go to rival companies…so we were safe for now.
The World definitely got crazier. I’ve tried hard to ignore my surroundings but looking out for the first time with my eyes open…it was gruesome. Human lives was treated like those of cattle. The 8 Mega Corporations that rule the world (one of which is Soba Games) was no different from that of a dictatorship.

Other than the boundaries of our city was a dead earth. Outside the first barrier that separates the rich and poor were dead bodies, people who have lost their will to live. Drug abuse was at an all time high as some brokers managed to sneak in drugs from outside. Many people simply chose to overdose themselves than to continue.

Truth be told, our city was better than most out there…judging that it was run by one of the 8 Mega Corporation, which means it can financially support people to a degree…but circumstances was only numbers and words in the end. People still died, people still starved, people, who were not us, were in despair.
This time, as a normal 13 year old and sis, a normal 18 year old felt so…powerless. Useless. In our previous lives, we shaped the very world to our liking. With our moral of “Ethical Justice” and “Justice Delayed is Justice Denied”, we changed the course of the world for the better in a matter of years and kept it there until the Immortals arrived. But now…it was horrible. All we could do was watch the news and remind ourselves that this world will not last.
We learned what it meant to be a powerless bystander. How those without power cannot act upon their justice or will.
Me: Sis…
Diana: Don’t worry Kara, we’ll never let the New World fall like this…not again. I’m not going to just be a bystander again.
With our allowance and sis’s earning from her first job at Dad’s company, we could’ve helped thousands and thousands of people…yet we actively chose to ignore them. Since even if we do help them, what next? The following day they will return for more. The education level they have received (none ~ elementary) would not allow them to think beyond of what is possible. No organizations, let alone our company finds worth in hiring them. In the end, we agreed that it was for the best to let this world die. After all, we were powerless as of now. We had no power like before where we can dissipate the pollution into nothing.
Diana: We know it’s hopeless. Scientifically, it’s impossible to revive this world. We have to let it die and let a new one take its place. We won’t interfere…but we won’t forget. Kara, take this as a learning experience of what our world could’ve been, and now what it would be if we let it continue.
Me: Human lives are so short…they can’t see a hundred years ahead of them. The generations live by the decade and push their problems to the next…we can’t allow that.
Diana: No. We cannot let that happen.
As if making fun of our words, the news suddenly changed to another emergency news that showed another city destroyed by a rebellion.
Diana: With the city destroyed, now all of them will die.
Me: Perhaps for the poor, that is preferable than a life without freedom. A life under a demanding corporation of this world is equivalent to that of slavery.
Diana: Only difference would be that the owners are smarter than they were before. They know how to make the best use of their slaves and exactly when to throw them away.
Me: Dystopia.

Diana: The worst.
On the other side of reality; in the game, life was the opposite. Our employees, who had a full 8 years (with multiple pay raises and insurance benefits. We met a couple of times as well as dad invited them to the house so they know who we are) to develop the guild…it was beautiful.
We finished building all the luxuries but they, in their own right and time, wanted to build more. They asked if they can use maybe a couple levels to make some NPCs for those places…so we made a compromise. They can make it however they want but in the end it will be us that presses the ‘Create NPC. While we did feel a little bad, we wanted the NPCs to know that in the end…we were their creators…all of them. We wanted none of the NPCs to feel left out since our 10 builders would not be here anymore when we go to the New World.
I think our greatest part of all of this was building the Library of Alexandria. We split the library into 2 general parts. Yggdrasil, and non-Yggdrasil. Naturally, all the lore, magic books, and anything generally related to the game was put on one side, and the other was…it was massive.
It would not be an understatement to say we downloaded the internet into forms of books and put them here. From everything to history, education, and all the things we would need. They were stored here. Counting my University life in my first life as well as our our second, we made this the biggest library we have ever seen. We even secretly stored a copied blueprint of Pluton here as well as ancient texts from Poneglyphs. Who knows when they might come useful. We put some books from our previous life as well, along with the ??’s famous Mastery Books. Of course, they were all copies. We weren’t stupid enough to put the real thing there.
Since the area was so ridiculously large, we had to create a couple Psychic NPCs to manage the place easily. Perhaps I should create a few ‘Fluder’ like NPCs and their endless pursuit of knowledge. That would make them love to stay here…but hopefully they would actually do their work instead of starving to death trying to read a word more.
The Grand Haven of Vanir (or Society) was becoming alive as we all poured our hearts and souls into making the place. It wasn’t JUST a defense mechanism or trap, but we added things that seemed usless…but to us, it meant the world.
For example, we added a recreated version of Impel Down on Floor 4 where we replaced the Lake with an actual ocean (with the Level 100 Leviathan and various sea monsters guarding it).
We added a tennis court on the 9th floor as a joke, but we found out that we can actually play the sport in game. This became a past-time break for all of us. Things were coming together, but the game itself was slowing drawing to the end.
We still had a few more stuff to do… I guess it’s time to abuse our rights once again.

The Big Picture The nature of evolution is to move slowly. Until it doesn’t. If humanity approached an evolutionary crisis… Would we know it? Bendik is a once-in-a-millennia genius. He does. He recognizes quantum computing will be the catalyst. More, he knows there are only three potential outcomes for homo-sapiens: evolution, enslavement, or destruction. Bendik's plan: trigger rapid human evolution, make rogue Quantum Intellect catastrophes impossible, and change the nature of human civilization forever. What's happened so far in Book 1 - link to first book Bendik perfected the world's first Quantum-core processor, decades before anyone else. However, his plan to trigger human evolution is complicated and it only now nears completion. At the same time, Ronanld Linkletter, a brutally self-serving competitor closes in on his own Quantum breakthrough. Bendik's catalyst, a globe spanning marvel of engineering nears completion. For his plan to work, he needs to train millions of people without tipping off the powers that be. His son Austin has the solution: an immersive game world indistinguishable from the real world, where playing can heal trauma, activate advanced, dormant DNA, and unwittingly train Bendik's millions. Planet Kuora is born and under the care of Elle, Austin's homo-empathic QI, it flourishes. After creating wholly unique avatars, endowed with Equilibrium powers, Austin's team and a second team led by Oliver Ward, a retired special forces operative, have entered Kuora. They are enthralled by Kuora, discover its history of power and betrayal, are set on quests to discover why the Pergothian Empire fell, and discover a hidden attribute system that grants extraordinary powers but can only be revealed through self-discovery. Book one leaves Austin's team poised on the brink of entering an ancient Breal Bloudran ruin. On Earth, Bendik hits a roadblock and needs help, but he can't risk exposing his project. His solution? Disguise advanced polymeric molecular math as the backdrop for his node tower construction ads. At the site in Medellín, Colombia he hits pay dirt. We meet Gideon Suarez. Gideon welcomes Bendik to the Imagineers. He has lived many lives, and he has been waiting for Bendik. Chapters posted here are the 2nd & 3rd Books in the Ascendant Earth Chronicles.
