Gin’s Notes #6 – a brief history of the 4th millennia
The 3rd millennium was mostly known for its technological breakthroughs. It was also known as the age of science. We could communicate through our pockets, travel in metallic worms and birds, harnessing power from the water, wind and light (although a few mages can do that now) etc. It’s a shame I wasn’t born in that era as, unfortunately, most of the knowledge has disappeared and I have only recovered just mere fragments of the past for my own use.
With the ever increasing numbers of mages and dwindling number of manush in the late 3rd millennium, the plan to unify the world was under way. It was in the early 4th millennium where that was realised under the ‘treaty of the mages’. What was conflict for thousands of years amongst various countries, turned into a period of peace under the notion, ‘we are all mages’. There was no reason to fight at all and so there was no harm in making an official document (although there really wasn’t any valid reason to fight in age of manush anyway).
The unity of mages worldwide allowed for technology to advance at a remarkable rate. However, the field that was growing the most was human genetics. Like me, the people of their time wanted to find out about their origin of how the mages came to be. They also wanted to improve themselves. In other words, have more variety amongst the mages (which they actually achieved).
The mages enjoyed several centuries in peace and in the year 3477, the formation of the MBP was found. There were three main headquarters, in Europe, North America and Australia (some of the old continents of the world). From my knowledge, at first, they would use only volunteers. This changed during the thousand plus year war that still persists to the present day, where it became compulsory for all mages to be born from the MBP.

Gin’s edit: just realised I haven’t put in a date of when I write my notes apart from the first one...Oh well. Keeping track of time is too tedious anyway.
I reckon things went downhill since the formation of the MBP. I believe that there were three major people running it (one in each location). You could tell the continents without one would be quite jealous and so alliances were made between continents without an MBP headquarter and those with one. This is what led to the formation of modern day Eurasia (EA), The Americas (TA) and the Afro-Australian Alliance (AAA).
The first few stages in division in the world were now in place. Eventually a dispute must have happened between the three continents, (I have yet to find out definite proof of this or the cause), and leading to the thousand-year we are currently in.
At the start of this note I was talking about the scientific breakthroughs the mages had managed. So what happened to all of that? To answer that, we have to look at the differences of the three continents of the 4th millennia.
The AAA was heavily focused on mechanical science. This was due to the fact that most of the technological breakthroughs were pioneered by them. On the other hand both EA and TA were more focused on human science. EA were more focused on enhancing the strengths of humans and TA were researching on powers that humans weren’t able to use before which, as you can probably guess, is the origin of Bestial and Elemental types respectively. Utility type is basically the miscellaneous mages that fit neither category.
Gin’s Edit: Wo pointed something out. It might be my integration with mages in Squadron W, but I’ve been referring to them as humans instead of mages. The two are interchangeable for them but I want to keep them distinct as two different species. Or it might not matter, as two separate species of birds can still be grouped as birds. Maybe if I want a distinction, I will make sure to call them mages and my kind as manush.

Then the AAA sent an army against EA. The reasons were unknown, especially after such a long period of peace. However, EA were prepared. It was as if they knew this was going to happen and had a secret counter measure. The Eurasian army at the time consisted of mainly electric elementals (or so I’ve read). They were able to manipulate the electricity within the weaponry and equipment the AAA had. It was a slaughter. The AAA army were annihilated by the very weapons they made.
It was after the battle of Anthrax that everyone decided to divert away from technology and focus on human science. You couldn’t trust anything other than yourselves and several more battles cemented this idea; the effectiveness of using machinery was near to nothing. This only meant the MBPs in each continent grew in power.
Eventually TA had to get involved and so disputes amongst all three continents led to the three-way stalemate that we have today.

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx.
